[Bug 383059] Re: mount -t ecryptfs for extern discovery fails

2009-06-03 Thread syscon-hh
I have a broken Jaunty system with home-directory separately, located on
/dev/sda3. All data in the standard-folder "/var/lib/ecryptfs/laura-bnb"
no more available - only the passphrase has been recorded (to paper).

Starting a Jaunty live-cd, and on desktop using a terminal. First I
mount the brocken system typing:

sudo mount -t auto /dev/sda3 /mnt followed by

sudo mount -t ecryptfs /mnt/home/laura-bnb/.Private /mnt/home/laura-bnb

The next input requieres to insert the "passphrase" followed by the
recommendable values. Resulting allways as read above!

Where the command "ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek" to use??

:-( laura

[Bug 383468] [NEW] xorg segvaulting

2009-06-03 Thread nyarnon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Just upgraded to flavor 30 kernels and guess what? xserver-xorg-video-
intel gives me pain. As soon as I login X seems to segfault and returns
to the login manager. Seen from syslog we have:

Jun 3 17:12:31 roelf-laptop kernel: [ 68.708567] Xorg[4585]: segfault at 0 ip
08135150 sp bfe8c4c4 error 4 in Xorg[8048000+1c3000]
Jun 3 17:12:32 roelf-laptop kernel: [ 68.800889] [drm:i915_get_vblank_counter]

Jun 3 17:12:32 roelf-laptop gdm[4580]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler:
Fatale X-fout - :0 wordt opnieuw gestart

So as soon as I remove xserver-xorg-video-intel version:
2:2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu1

I'm able to run in low graphics mode. As soon as I install the xdriver
again we segfault again.

[Bug 295536] Re: cups-pdf fails bad status reported and no pdf created

2009-06-03 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Indeed, so changing the cups-pdf section in the cupsd AppArmor profile
is the wrong answer. This then points to possible regressions in
AppArmor, on an existing configuration that, until Intrepid, worked out
of the box.

I'm thus reassigning this to apparmor.

Dear Peter,

I'm now running an amd64 kernel with the latest beta from Adobe, and it runs
just fine. I suggest eveyone running the 64bits wrapper to change ASAP to
the new ".so" beta. It was already been discussed "ad nauseaum" in launchpad

[Bug 382045] Re: Intermittent printing problem - device comm. error

2009-06-03 Thread merrifie
This could be related to "Printer (HWModel Name) May Not Be Connected"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal-cups-utils/+bug/348316

I experienced the printing problems described in 348316 (and
hplip/+question/70960 referenced above) while using 2.6.28-11 (the
default boot option for Ubuntu 9.04). I happened to try 2.6.27-11 just
to see what would happen. I no longer have printing problems with
2.6.27-11.

The discussion in 348316 wondered if this was a kernel regression. It
seems like it to me.

The strange thing is that I have the latest version of hal-cups-utils
which is supposed to include changes to resolve 348316...

[Bug 295536] Re: cups-pdf fails bad status reported and no pdf created

2009-06-03 Thread Martin Pitt
"Px" means "protected by a profile", we ship one for cups-pdf. "Ux"
means "unlimited", i. e. there is no AppArmor confinement whatsoever for
cups-pdf. See "man apparmor.d".

Indeed you need world-executable permissions on your home directory
nowadays (just like with apache, etc.). We install home directories as
755 by default, so this is not a problem in a default installation.

[Bug 295536] Re: cups-pdf fails bad status reported and no pdf created

2009-06-03 Thread Martin Pitt
BTW, "sudo chmod 777 /usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" is VERY VERY VERY
VERY wrong! Please don't change permissions on those backends if you
don't know for sure what that does. First you have a world-writable file
in your system now which anyone can tamper with to create a local root
exploit, and second this causes cups-pdf to not run as root any more. It
needs to be root in order to function at all. Please change it back to
700.

[Bug 325565] Re: Firefox cannot open PHP pages

2009-06-03 Thread Micah Gersten
Firefox doesn't know what to do with plain text files with a .php
extension. When you go to a website with a .php extension, the
webserver returns a text/html or similar type file that firefox knows
how to render. If you navigate to the www directory and try to open a
.php file, Firefox will not know what to do with it. This is standard
behavior.

  * Add patch fix-demo-polyheron-3.dpatch.
  * Fix support for nocheck in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS (was broken in 3.4-3).

  * Update boost dependencies to 1.38.
  * Remove watch file (new upstream location uses unpredictable paths).
  * Update Standards-Version to 3.8.1 (add support for nocheck in
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS).
  * Change Suggests: dependency of libcgal-demo from libqglviewer-dev
to libqglviewer-qt4-dev (all demos using libQGLViewer use Qt4).
  * Add workaround for #522659 to README.Debian.

cgal (3.4-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Add "-mieee -mfp-rounding-mode=d" to CGAL_CXX_FLAGS on alpha (got lost
during the transition to cmake).

cgal (3.4-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.
  * Adapt debian/rules to the new cmake-based build system.
  * Downgrade LAPACK- and BLAS-related Build-Depends: to Suggests: for
libcgal-demo, since it is now possible to configure demos and examples
independently of the library.

[Bug 383461] [NEW] gconf-sanity-check-2 exits with code 256 on Xorg start

2009-06-03 Thread Michael Milligan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgconf2-4

This is against Karmic Alpha 1.

After upgrading and rebooting, when Xorg started (via gdm), I got an
error dialog "/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with code
256" to which I clicked the Close button. Display manager failed to
start (compiz), with some wierd error. Running gconf-sanity-check-2
from a terminal complained that the configuration was in use, but I
continued and it gave a error "permission denied:
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system"... ah hah.

$ l -d /etc/gconf/*
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 25  2006 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 25 11:14 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun  3 21:27 /etc/gconf/2
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun  3 21:27 /etc/gconf/schemas
drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Jun  3 23:06 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system

Doing this fixed it.
$ sudo chmod go+rx /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system

Stopping and starting gdm and then logging in, everything seems fine.
So, I'm guessing there is a packaging issue with wrong permissions on
that directory when libgconf2-4 is installed/upgraded.

[Bug 382640] Re: xorg crashes (nvidia 180.51)

2009-06-03 Thread Tom Metro
I saw the same symptoms with 180.44-0ubuntu1 on 9.04:

daemon.log:Jun  1 15:39:18 fringe gdm[3199]: WARNING:

But nothing unusual in Xorg.0.log*.

Perhaps resolved in the 180.60 version, which someone commented in Bug
#355155 resolved a crash problem.

[Bug 375125] Re: New upstream version (2.0.2)

  [ Andrew Starr-Bochicchio ]
  * New upstream release. (LP: #375125)
  * debian/control: Bump Standards-Version
  * debian/rules: Call autoreconf
   - config.status should create po/stamp-it but does not,
 causing an infinite loop in the build, probably due to
 upstream using an older version of intltool. Hopefully
 this can be dropped with next release.

  [ Julien Lavergne ]
  * debian/control :
   - Replace libglitz build-depends by libxrender-dev, libxcomposite-dev,
 libgtkglext1-dev and libxinerama-dev.
   - Add missing ${misc:Depends} for cairo-dock-dev.
  * debian/cairo-dock-cairo.desktop
   - New desktop file to launch the non-OpenGL version.
  * debian/cairo-dock-data.install :
   - Add new directorie usr/share/pixmaps
   - update to install both desktop files.

[Bug 213006] Re: [Hardy] startupmanager-1.9.10-2 hangs at "Performing post-configureation tasks"

2009-06-03 Thread Derek White
It happened again...See the following for detailed description:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/271246/comments/7

Maybe update-grub doesn't like a menu.lst~ or a menu.lst.backup being in
/boot/grub?

After fixing the problems listed in bug 271246 and removing the 2 old
files, running startupmanager from a terminal window brings up the ASCI
window during "Performing pre-configuration tasks" and I selected to
keep the local version (I'm gonna redo it all anyways).

Did my stuff in sum, and during post-config, the ASCI window came up
again...selecting to view a 3-way difference shows the following:

5a
||| Older
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/dereksbox-root ro
splash vga=795
===
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/dereksbox-root ro
vga=795 splash
>>> New
.
4a
<<< Current
.

The only difference seems to be the order of vga= and splash... I
selected to install the package maintainer's version (sum's?) this time.

Complete terminal log:

[Bug 383454] [NEW] Jaunty: Print to file fails due to missing output directory

2009-06-03 Thread daks...@gmail.com
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

After install installing cups-pdf (sudo apt-get install cups-pdf), I get
a new printer called "PDF" in my list of printers. However, when I tried
to print, it kept failing. I realized this was happening because of the
missing output folder in the home directory (also named "PDF"). Once I
manually created "~/PDF", everything worked smoothly.

Two things:
1) Currently, users are not told that output will be found in ~/PDF or the fact
that it needs to be created. The installation of cups-pdf could create the
directory and somehow let the users know where it is.
2) I think a better way would be to have an option inside such pseudo-printers
that allows the user to enter the directory where the outputs should go.

Thanks
Akshay

[Bug 269954] Re: ssh -X breaks Xauthority on NFS mounted home dir

2009-06-03 Thread Joe Kislo
We have been regression testing our production environment on Ubuntu
Hardy, and I believe the root cause of an intermittent nfs failure issue
we are seeing on Hardy (but not previous versions of ubuntu) is sourced
from this kernel bug. It took a long time to track the issue down, as
our use case is significantly more complex than the one described here,
but when you boil it down, I think it's the same thing.

We are testing the 2.6.24-24-generic kernel on Ubuntu hardy. All
patches are applied as of 06/04/09. The test case provided by Ari
Mujunen does not work for me, and I am unable to reproduce it by those
steps. I have been able to reproduce it reliably a different way:

System A: NFS Server
System B: NFS Client

System A:
mkdir tmpdir
touch tmpdir/tmpfile
tar -cvf x.tar tmpdir

System B:
stat tmpdir/tmpfile

System A:
tar -xvf x.tar

System B:
stat tmpdir/tmpfile

There's something about tar and having a subdirectory in the mix that
seems to trigger the issue for me, that Ari's steps don't.

Here are the server export:
xxx client(rw,async,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
and the client mount:
server:/xxx  /x   nfs
soft,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nosuid,noac,tcp,timeo=20

This is a very serious issue for us, and unlike the .XAuthority usecase,
we can't just 'work around it'. Our production environment implements
an Active/Active redundant NFS store at the application level. This
issue will (rightly so) make our nfs layer believe the nfs server has
failed, adding in arbitrary directory listing calls isn't a practical
option, and doesn't reliably work either. The ls trick described above
seems to MOSTLY work for getting the nfs client back alive, but not
always. We have directory structures that may be nested a few levels
deep, and this seems to cause further issues. I've seen our application
get the kernel nfs client into a state where whole directories of files
are returning 'Stale NFS file handle' errors... One time I used the ls
trick to try to get the client working again, and it stopped the 'Stale
NFS file handle' errors, but ls returned completely corrupted garbage
(it listed the files but with alot of ??'s for the attributes).

I have found reference to this bug here:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12557

The but has a candidate patch attached, but I haven't tried it yet.

This seems like a fairly serious regression. The tar usecase I have
provided seems like a very frequent operation over nfs, and this isn't a
client race condition. The client is just toast... it doesn't come back
unless you remount, or you do some trickery by finding out what's
changed and trying to do directory listings of those directories.

[Bug 332056] Re: Compiz update has deteriorated desktop effects

2009-06-03 Thread Robert Ancell
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 271246] Re: debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

2009-06-03 Thread Derek White
After attempting upgrade today I had several errors with mysql, cups, and dpkg
in general.
It all seems to be caused by the following error:

debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by
another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

I also noticed the same error in syslog (or .xsession-errors) earlier, while
using startupmanager.
Upon opening synaptic:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Prior to doing that, the recommended 'fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat'
returned nothing.
Returning to startupmanager...it seems that su-to-root (and other related
programs) was active, running something that gave the following in my
.xsession-errors log:
---
A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version installed
currently has been locally modified.

  1. install the package maintainer's version
  2. keep the local version currently installed
  3. show the differences between the versions
  4. show a side-by-side difference between the versions
  5. show a 3-way difference between available versions
  6. do a 3-way merge between available versions (experimental)
  7. start a new shell to examine the situation

What would you like to do about menu.lst?
---

So, in my case, this was a startupmanager problem - it has no facility
to notify the user that this input is required...and waiting in a non-
existent terminal. I added this as a bug a while ago, but no one is
currently supporting startupmanager and the bug has gone without a fix.
I dunno, maybe it's a problem with 'sudo update-initramfs -u'? To
whomever this problem belongs, in my case initramfs noticed either the
menu.lst~ or the menu.lst.backup and wanted user input to decide whether
or not to update menu.lst - and startupmanager has no such facility to
let the user know.

Upon killing ucf, this showed up in my .xsession-errors:

/usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1036: 11220 Terminated  ucf
--debconf-ok --debconf-template grub/update_grub_changeprompt_threeway
--three-way "$buffer" $ucf_menu_file

So, maybe it's update-grub's fault? =)

Anyways, after killing ucf, 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' still didn't fix
the packages, so I found su-to-root still running and End'd it; but
still, update-grub & 'python /usr/sbin/startupmanager' (after attempting
an End) are in a Zombie state and cannot be End'd or Kill'd. Even 'su
kill -9' or -anything won't end them. ... OK, so 'sudo killall -g
update-grub' finally killed them all.

Then I ran 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' and it told me that mysql-
server-5.0 was in really bad shape and I should re-install it, the other
4-5 packages were configured OK. After a 'sudo apt-get install
--reinstall mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server' everything seems OK and the
'sudo dpkg --configure -a' returns cleanly. And, most importantly, my
LAMP server is functional again!

This may have been, and probably was, over-kill...but at least you know
this error can be over-come (without a logout or restart). It is also
not a bug of any one program, many different circumstances can cause
this "debconf: DbDriver"config":" error to rear its nasty head.

Final Note: The requested 'fuser' command never once showed anything, it
always returned cleanly. It does not appear to be a valid debug tool in
this case.

*** Firefox/Launchpad won't let me delete the attachment, so you guys
get to see my apt-get update terminal logs...how fun!

Re: [Bug 48563] Re: filesystem check fails on boot, but filesystem isn't bad

2009-06-03 Thread Hyperfitz
Wow, this is constructive. For the record, there is nothing wrong with my
file system. There is, however, something wrong with the check that happens
at boot. It is not user error, sorry if you think otherwise--doesn't change
the facts. My suggestion is hardly (in the slightest) like telling people to
drive around without seat belts. You ought to know just a little bit more
about people before you simply start insulting them, Theodore. You know
nothing about me--not one little thing.

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2009-06-03 Thread Scott Ritchie
The issue is that Gnometris is being very stupid about rendering - every
frame it's rendering every single svg brick separately. This is why it
gets slower with more bricks on the screen even when they're the same
color. If it did some sort of caching this likely wouldn't be an issue.
