[Bug 461020] Re: Karmic: Cups + usblp + segfault in libc-2.10.1.so

2009-10-28 Thread phaidros
OK, the hint with parallel:/dev/usb/lp0 and *not* blacklisting usblp helped.
printer is not detected, but prints :D

anways, everytime I plug it in the segfault in libc-2.10.1.so is logged. so,
printer is running, but still this is a bug.

[Bug 368843] Re: recordmydesktop save saving a previous filename

2009-10-28 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gtk-recordmydesktop
+ The gtk-recordmydesktop save dialogue breaks conventions, misleading
+ users. It needs a bit of a redesign.

- When attempting to save a recorded video recordmydesktop uses the last
- typed in path and filename instead of the one entered.
-
- Release 9.04
+ The way it looks now it makes users believe that:
+ "When attempting to save a recorded video recordmydesktop uses the last typed
in path and filename instead of the one entered."(quote from the original bug
report)

[Bug 347711] Re: Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Unstable on Jaunty

2009-10-28 Thread William King
I have the bug too with a Gigabyte P55-UD4P motherboard. I almost RMA'd
the board because I thought it was a bad board.

My symptoms: I have freeswitch(open source voip software) calling into a
16khz conference call, so about 90Kbps constant for the whole afternoon,
with an ssh session open with screen(the dark profile so I can see the
clock in the bottom right). I'm using Jaunty 9.04 server, with an Intel
i7 860 processor with 8GB of RAM. I've called this machine 'therabbit'.

Basically, all audio in and out from the voip call, and all data in the
ssh connection stop. This happens every 30 minutes or so. Then after 4-5
minutes all the connections continue. None of the connections have
dropped, but no audio or ssh data is passed in the 'blackout period'.

I will upgrade to Karmic when it comes out on Saturday.

[Bug 462434] [NEW] Evolution sent links not clickable

2009-10-28 Thread David Oxland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I am sending a link in Evolution it is not clickable unless I do something
immediately after the link; add a space or enter.
People receiving these are complaining as they are not use to cut and pasting
the links into a browser

What I expect to happen : the links as soon as they appear, to be highlighted
or coloured and functionally clickable.
What happens: the links are in plain black text and are not clickable by the
sender or receiver.

[Bug 462436] [NEW] Desktop background becomes black when desktop effects are enabled on GNOME and KDE

2009-10-28 Thread Linux User
Public bug reported:

I have a computer with 1 GB RAM, 200 GB hard drive and an ATI Radeon
9200 Pro video card.

Desktop effects worked on previous versions of Ubuntu and also on Mandriva
Linux on this computer
when my video card is using the open source 'ati' driver.

I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu 9.10 RC desktop livecd ISO to a CD.

I booted my computer from the CD.

When it got to the desktop, the desktop background was black.

However, although the background was stayed black, the desktop effects were
working (for eg, when I switched virtual desktops the
virtual desktop switching effect worked).

I changed the wallpaper but the background still remained black.

When I disabled desktop effects, the background became normal and showed
the proper background.

I went to System>Administration and clicked the Hardware Drivers tool.

The Hardware Drivers tool said that no proprietary drivers were being
used.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 RC to my hard disk.

After installing it and rebooting from the hard disk, the problem was
still there.

I installed kubuntu-desktop, logged out of GNOME and logged into KDE.

When I logged into KDE KDE's desktop effects were not enabled.

I went to KDE's system settings tool and clicked display and clicked
enable desktop effects.

The background became black.

I disabled KDE's desktop effects and the background became normal.

I installed all the available updates for my system and rebooted, but
after rebooting the problem was still there on both GNOME and KDE.

Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

[Bug 448337] Re: .bashrc is not executed when terminal is opened through nautilus-open-terminal

2009-10-28 Thread Christian Neumair
>* nautilus-open-terminal_0.17-1ubuntu1.diff (2.1 KiB, text/plain)
(changing sh -l to sh -i)

I am somewhat angry as the nautilus-open-terminal upstream maintainer. I
exhaustively said that we need to discuss this in a competent fashion
with competent individuals. Why are you silently changing a package
"just" because you want this to work differently in your setup?

If you do know what you are doing, please share your rationale with the
ubuntu package changelog and with us, so that we can at least follow
your rationale. I am especially interested when to invoke a shell with
-i, -l, both of them or none of them.

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-10-28 Thread Nathaniel Smith
It's claimed here that the bug is in evince, but I don't actually see
the evidence. The "bad" PDFs produced by evince display render perfectly
in evince, xpdf, and gs; the output of pstopdf on those files also
renders perfectly in evince and gs. It's just the printer that is
complaining.

It seems to me that *if* the PDF/PS files evince is generating are
legal, and just happen to trigger a printer bug, then it's really cups'
job to work around that printer bug, not evince's to somehow intuit what
sort of printer the file will eventually be sent to after being passed
through some set of filters they have no control over.

Of course, it maybe be that evince/xpdf/gs are in just lenient when
displaying stuff, and evince is actually generating buggy PDF/PS, in
which case it should be fixed. But to make that argument surely we need
someone to actually look at the postscript spec and figure things out.

[Bug 368843] Re: recordmydesktop save saving a previous filename

2009-10-28 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Yes, it definitely is a usability bug.I have set the status to confirmed.
Should have done so when I originally commented.
I have also updated the bug description.

As to how exactly a better design should look:
*A "Save As" pop up could quickly get annoying.
*The program currently _does_ things right, it just _looks_ wrong. Currently
the user can set a name and then record take after take to that name and it
automatically numbers the takes. That is convenient. Especially since it does
not have a pause function. Btw, maybe it should have a pause function?

[Bug 462454] [NEW] Should not have a notification icon, or it should be optional

2009-10-28 Thread Koterpillar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: beagle

Beagle inserts an icon into the notification area. The icon does not
notify of anything; when clicked, opens Beagle search window, which
could be opened by a launcher all the same. Given that I already have
"Tracker" applet in the panel, the icon is useless. There at least
should be an option to disable it, ideally, on by default (a launcher on
the panel, and Tracker applet give the same functionality and do not
clutter notification area).

[Bug 462453] [NEW] libdc-1394-22 gives "libdc1394 error: Failed to initialize libdc1394" when loaded.

2009-10-28 Thread hendeby
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libdc1394-22

Since installing Ubuntu 9.10 the libdc1394-22 package has stopped to
work. As soon as I try to load the library I get "libdc1394 error:

Recompiling from the latest sources available on the libdc1394 homepage
yields a library that doesn't have this problem.

the script was test to exclude python-apt as a source of error.

[Bug 160002] Re: apparmor should have a 'usr' tunable

2009-10-28 Thread JanCeuleers
The recent change of description of this bug suggests a particular
solution to the problem, which I think is incomplete.

The problem occurs on my machine because, although /usr is located on
the root filesystem, several of the directories under /usr are soft
links to targets on a different filesystem. I need to do this because
the root filesystem is a smallish flash disk that does not have enough
space to hold some of the files that are needed only late in the boot
process (such as X etc).

I have fixed this by changing all of the apparmor configuration files
that contain impacted paths to include the target path. Laborious,
although such an update could probably be automated.

Perhaps a dpkg-reconfigure hook could be added to enable the admin to
update the apparmor config files when particular files or directories
have been moved.

[Bug 458352] Re: Karmic - Corrupted Recovery Menu

2009-10-28 Thread FormerSlacker
I subscribed to a launchpad account simply to add that I'm also
affected. Latest mountall did not change a thing. Recovery console is
completely unusable after pressing the down arrow a couple of times.
Corrupted cli etc...

Exact same situation as emarkay.

I've also noticed that if I switch to tty1 from X (ALT+CTRL+F1), login,
load up nano with a file, scroll up/down with PAGE UP/DOWN repeatedly,
I'm eventually greeted to the same situation. I seem to be dropped to a
maintenance mode with the output that "mountall has failed" and a root
prompt, as well as the cli being corrupted and unsuable.

This only happens on tty1, all other tty's are fine. These two issues
seem very much related, and there definitely still is an issue IMO.

[Bug 429607] Re: cssh messes up copy-paste, inserts wrong characters

2009-10-28 Thread SteffenOschatz
At least solved for me in latest release 3.27 on SourceForge.
Fixed in source probably since 2009-04-16.
Please perform upgrade, because currently version is complete useless if most
of the users can not paste in it.
(For example: typing 50 character random ids for lookup purpose isn't that
funny)

The workaround I found is to disable "Beagle search tool" in "Startup

settings.

[Bug 458904] Re: When installing a node, euca_find_cluster fails to locate the cluster controller if instances are running

Given that avahi-daemon ships with publish-addresses=yes, that may be
difficult to fix in a SRU.

[Bug 458904] Re: When installing a node, euca_find_cluster fails to locate the cluster controller if instances are running

2009-10-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
I tested the proposed update-based solution and it does *not* seem to
work:

* Added the avahi-publish upstart job
* Restart cluster
* Cluster has:
$ ip addr show eth0
2: eth0: mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP
qlen 1000
link/ether 00:13:20:f8:4d:11 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 169.254.169.254/32 scope link eth0:metadata
inet 192.168.0.127/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global eth0
inet6 fe80::213:20ff:fef8:4d11/64 scope link
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
* Launch UEC node install : euca_find_cluster says 192.168.0.127:8774
* On Cluster, add an IP address: sudo ip addr add 192.168.0.230 dev eth0 label
eth0:pub
* Cluster now has:
$ ip addr show eth0
2: eth0: mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP
qlen 1000
link/ether 00:13:20:f8:4d:11 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 169.254.169.254/32 scope link eth0:metadata
inet 192.168.0.127/24 brd 192.168.0.255 scope global eth0
inet 192.168.0.230/32 scope global eth0:pub
inet6 fe80::213:20ff:fef8:4d11/64 scope link
   valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
* Launch UEC node install: euca_find_cluster now says 192.168.0.230:8774

You still have to explicitly disable IP address publication for it to work:
Add "publish-addresses=no" to [publish] section in avahi-daemon.conf
Then new addresses won't be published and resolution will always work.

[Bug 448854] Re: SIGSEGV from i915_dri.so

2009-10-28 Thread Sami Pietila
I tested this with other hardware/software combinations too:

1)

Ubuntu 9.04 + Radeon 2400HD (proprietary driver): works

2)

Ubuntu 9.10 + Radeon Xpress 200M: does not work and complains
"org.lwjgl.opengl.OpenGLException: Invalid enum (1280)". Jmonkey engine
wiki says that this error is usually caused by too old driver. The
driver is radeon driver version 1:6.12.99+git20090929.7968e1fb-0ubuntu1.

3)

Ubuntu 9.10 + Intel GMA 950: Crashes as reported

4)

Windows XP + Intel GMA 950 (test #3 is run using the same machine):
works well

-

Please take a look and fix this crash-problem.

[Bug 462195] Re: Problem with internetbanking ib.mpu.cz

2009-10-28 Thread Micah Gersten
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. You are seeing this error because your
bank is using a self-signed certificate that Firefox cannot verify the
authenticity of. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this. You
can suggest to your bank that they purchase an SSL certificate from a known
certificate authority and that will make the message go away. The warning is
there to keep you from trusting sites who might appear to be a legitimate
institution, but might not be.
Please report any other issues you may find.

[Bug 461366] Re: empathy not open in Karmic: segmentation fault

2009-10-28 Thread mu3en
"translate: segmentation fault.

there are no /var/crash file, and no entry in log.
empathy not open.. thats all"

that IS all, no /var/crash, no message at all, because it isn't a crash,
it just doesn't work.

click empathy -> loading empathy -> back to desktop.

from terminal run empathy-> segmentation fault -> back to prompt

seems like a valid issue, without apport support? so where to go from
there?

[Bug 325312] Re: No proprietary drivers shown for my ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10

2009-10-28 Thread crep4ever
Same with Karmic 9.10.
HW: laptop packard Bell EasyNote with an ati mobility radeon 9600 M10

I tried a fresh install with all defaults options: crash when loading the first
step because of the driver.
Tried an installation with failsafe mode: ok.

Problem is, impossible to find proprietary drivers with
system/administration/hardware drivers tool.
Seems that the driver we should use is either radeon (already included) or
catalyst 9.3.
Using radeon (editing xorg.conf and set "radeon" instead of "vesa" in driver
section) causes the system to freeze.
I also tried "ati" and "fglrx" although it's not recommended but same result
(freeze).

[Bug 462464] [NEW] Apport prompt to report the same bug over and over

2009-10-28 Thread Dario Bertini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I am affected by this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/417842

it triggers on every login and every time the computer wakes from
sleep... apport prompts to report the bug, but upon closing (or
reporting the bug), apport comes back up with the same bug over and
over...

in this case i counted 6 (six) istances of the apport dialog about the
same bug... before it kept quiet at last

avoiding to offer reporting the same bug over multiple sessions may be
nice (this of course, only if the user already got through the hurdle to
send the bug to launchpad by opening the bug-report page in the browser
); but even recognizing the same bug and avoid prompting about it
several times in rapid succession could be a welcome improvement

A strange tapping, clicking sound emitted from the speakers at irregular
intervals. if a dash represents one click/tap then the sound proceeds in the
following way:

the sound is difficult to describe- somewhat like the sound made when an output
cable to external speakers is pulled out of the audio out jack. but much
shorter. it begins at start up.

[Bug 462467] [NEW] No text in libnotify pop-ups

2009-10-28 Thread Steve McGrath
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: notify-osd

Not sure if this is actually a bug in notify-osd, Xorg, Gnome, the
kernel, .

Libnotify popups have no text or icon. Just a few scattered pixels.

They also don't blur/fade when the mouse pointer gets near them, they
simply disappear.

This didn't happen with Jaunty on this laptop, and does not happen with
Karmic installed from the Beta ISO on my other machine. Only on this
laptop installed with the Karmic RC iso.

I'm attaching a screenshot showing the problem.

[Bug 456274] Re: mountall 0.2.5 and cryptsetup fail to boot when using usplash

2009-10-28 Thread Luka Renko
There is some improvement with latest updates (1.0 release):
- I enter my passphrase
- I get Recovery Console prompt (press Esc)
- I wait a bit, but my passphrase does not seem to be accepted
- I get new cryptsetup prompt
- I enter passphrase and boot continues

So the only problem seems to be that first entering of passphrase is not
accepted and I have to retry each time. But at least I can boot now
without getting into recovery console and without seeing repeating
recovery console messages.
