I have spent some time trying to reproduce your issue - however the only way I could replicate this in any way was to remove the postfix configuration directory (/etc/postfix) prior to trying to purge postfix and mail-stack-delivery. Re-running 'sudo apt-get purge mail-stack-delivery' successfully completed the purge operation in my test case as 'postconf' was no longer installed so mail-stack-delivery won't try to backout its changes to postfix. Please could you check whether this was the case in your installation. Couple of comments: 1) By default the init script for the puppet agent does not start the agent; this is set in /etc/default/puppet - the upstart configuration needs to exhibit the same behaviour. 2) The puppet package also has two other init scripts; we should switch the package over wholesale to upstart - no just one agent IMHO. Although I would love to see the puppet packages using upstart I think its a bit late in the precise development cycle to accept this change. I suggest that we land an appropriate change once Ubuntu Q development opens. William, thanks that is great news. James, to call this a limitation is IMHO a major understatement. Since all services, units, etc are removed after a destroy-environment, the local environment is nothing more than for testing or demonstration purposes. Note that first the ubuntu-cloud template needs to be fixed to not always use precise :) I'm going to fix that in the next upload. The other problem is that the -root images apparently are only created for precise. I'm assigning this to smoser to get his input on whether that will change. If you're touching this, please fix use of 'daily' in the ubuntu- cloudimg-query string. you really should default that to 'released'. The daily images have little or no validation done to them. use 'released'. Optionally allow a '--stream=daily' flag. also, you should not assume that the password on the image is 'ubuntu', but rather set it with 'chpasswd'. Bogged down with other things ATM, but spent some time looking at this last night. nova.compute.manager._shutdown_instance() raises an exception if the instance is already in POWEROFF state. It looks like this conditional has existed forever: if current_power_state == power_state.SHUTOFF: self.db.instance_destroy(context, instance_id) _msg = _('trying to destroy already destroyed instance: %s') raise exception.Invalid(_msg % instance_uuid) It currently does nothing to cleanup bdms and inform nova-volume that the volume is free. We can certainly do that from the compute manager when the condition is met, volumes are freed up to be used elsewhere. The problem there is the iSCSI sessions are never cleaned up from the compute host. Reattaching the volume to another instance on the same compute node works okay since https://review.openstack.org/#change,4611, but having dangling iSCSI sessions hanging around seems dirty. Looking at the libvirt compute driver, it appears the l_shutdown_instance()'s later call to driver.destroy() handles terminating an already SHUTOFF'd instance just fine, and also properly cleans up its iscsi connections, among other things. It would appear that, in teh case of libvirt, the condition raised above is obsolete. Hm. I take it back about the problem not existing in Oneiric - I wiped the machine and reloaded clean with Oneiric Server, and am encountering the same bluescreen during installation at the same place. This may be related to the hardware platform - I *JUST* did several of these installs onto Intel i7 and AMD Opteron machines this week, but this particular host is an Athlon X3-based machine. Maybe there's a bug related to the hardware? I don't think it's actual *faulty* hardware; the problem is too consistent and only occurs during guest installation - also, I've switched from a ripped ISO image (which worked fine for previous installs) to reading /dev/sr0 directly (from a different disc, yet) and got the exact same bluescreen. Yep, same bluescreen with Server 2008 R2, non-SP1. That's three different discs and a ripped ISO image, all of which are known good, which bluescreen in the same place with the same error. For reference - current motherboard is Asus m5a88-M, current CPU is Athlon X3-450. I will be replacing these with an ASROCK motherboard and Intel i7-2600 ASAP and retesting. Chris- I'm a little uncomfortable wrapping self.driver.destroy in a try/except block until there is a common exception language virt drivers can use to raise specific, fatal exceptions. I'm thinking of a scenario where libvirt/xs cannot shutdown instance, raises, and compute continues on with volume disassociation. For what it is worth, I tested this with unity, gnome and XFCE and the bug exists with both unity and gnome. Unfortunately no. I tried submitting the package upstream to Debian a while ago, however it couldn't be included due to licensing concerns. I'm not sure where things are at currently, I no longer play this game, nor use a Debian or Ubuntu derived distro. If someone else wants to take over, feel free. I downloaded the file. Let's review, so that I get you what you want. I am going to image the PC as it is. Wipe it and install Ubuntu using your file on a OEM Windows 7 system. This may take awhile, maybe several days. First, I have to say that I was attempting to install 11.04 and installing the files to a back partition in my case H directly from the Ubuntu site not with a CD/DVD. Now, this is the process I used initially and I will repeat it using your new file. I opened a network connection from a Windows 7 Home Premium OS, downloaded wubi from the Ubuntu site and ran it on my desktop and it appeared that wubi went onto the internet and downloaded the files from Ubuntu for the 11.04 version and installed them to the H drive. The Windows boot menu appeared, I selected Ubuntu and next a grub2? boot menu appeared and I selected Ubuntu and it failed. I got an email from bcbc and followed his email to collect the information he needed and passed on to Ilya. Since that time I did three things. I investigated the issue from the windows side. First I discovered that the Windows system was setup on a dynamic drive. Then second I discovered that I had to shift the drive to a static drive to install another OS and did that. I then discovered (as is common on most OEM computers like Dell) that they fill up the drive with primary partitions so that you can't install another type of operating system. It seems Windows systems only allow four primary partitions, so third I turned two of the partitions to extended partition, which gave me the ability to install another OS. One point, mostly for Windows users, the windows operating system will only trigger the (you must change some of your partitions to extended partitions to add another primary partition [you need to do this to add another operating system]) warning ONCE, so if you miss this warning you can chase your tail all day and not be able to add Linux and not know why. In preparation for doing a more conservative install of an older version of Linux I did this. I decided to backstep to 10.43 and changed the partitioning as described above and then installed the Ubuntu files using a downloaded Ubuntu image ISO on a DVD and used the wubi.exe in the image and directed the installer to put the files on the C or primary partition (sda0?) instead of a back partition and it worked like a charm. This tells us that there isn't anything in the hardware creating the problem and nothing intrinsic with Windows 7 and all its patches to cause the problem. So to recap, I am going to install the OEM Windows 7 image. THIS TIME I am going to go through all the hard drive changes, FIRST, (this may have triggered the UUID detection process) with the target for the installed Linux files being loaded and installed to the back partition DIRECTLY from the web image of the latest version of Ubuntu (I am assuming here that the wubi installer and Ubuntu version are set to install the latest stable version of Ubuntu directly from the Ubuntu site). Letting the wubi installer go onto the Ubuntu site and download the Ubuntu files from the site and install them to the back drive as I tried to do initially. This way we can learn if it is with the whole download and install directly from the internet process (files pulled from the wrong place on the site? or corruption in transit). If this works using your NEW file then problem solved. If it fails I will run the same commands shown in the previous emails to gather information and then run the latest 64 bit version from an ISO that I will download and use your new wubi file to see if I can make it pick up the disk and install it (bypassing the wubi file in the image) (directions on how to do this may be needed) and see if this works after I wipe the machine and install the clean OEM windows 7 image.
