[Bug 573367] [NEW] Screen corruption on ATI RV370 with multiple monitors

2010-05-01 Thread Baard Johansen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When attaching a second monitor to my laptop using VGA and launching
'gnome-display-manager' both screens shows a corrupted image. Restarting
GDM switches to a mirrored, non-corrupted image. The default resolution
on the laptop-screen in 1400x1050 with no xorg.conf

I've also noticed that switching from X to VT1 back to X when adding
"Virtual 2424 1050" to xorg.conf freezes the laptop. Not sure if it is
related.

If I understood Geir Ove Myhr correctly, re-enabling DRI solved the
problem for most users. The fact that they have not re-spun another
release candidate does not imply that this will be broken in the final
release.

[Bug 155301] Re: FSC Amilo pro v3205 - touchpad is not recognized by the kernel after suspend to RAM

2009-10-11 Thread Baard Johansen
Downgrading the BIOS to 1.10 seems to solve the problem. Upgrading the
BIOS was really simple (didn't require Windows). Just download the file
labelled "BIOS Flash (ISO CD-Image)" and burn it to a CD. Boot the CD
with your laptop and type 'flash' at the command prompt.

[Bug 395932] [NEW] No Xv support for 82852/855GM in Karmic

2009-07-05 Thread Baard Johansen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading to Karmic (alpha) my graphics driver is unable to
provide Xv. The following line is printed in Xorg.0.log:

(WW) intel(0): Disabling Xv because no adaptors could be initialized.

I've tried various settings in xorg.conf, with no luck.
(XvPreferOverlay, Tiling).

Tried installing Karmic alpha 2 today. Unfortunately I was not able to
reproduce the problem, since the intel driver failed to provide Xv. I
will file a separate bug for this.

[Bug 309493] Re: Thinkpad T60 high pitch noise Ubuntu 8.10 under no load

2009-02-11 Thread Baard Johansen
"Another point against using a high default HZ value is laptops whose
power electronics make noise when the CPU transitions from halt to
running. Power management has to be completely disabled on these
machines in order to run with a high HZ value and no noise." from
http://kerneltrap.org/node/5430

You will have to recompile the kernel to change the default frequency.
It would be nice if this had been a kernel parameter that we could
tweak.

[Bug 309493] Re: Thinkpad T60 high pitch noise Ubuntu 8.10 under no load

2009-02-11 Thread Baard Johansen
Yes, it's a Centrino (Pentium M), and you're probably right about there
being different settings for different CPUs. Even though the workaround
eliminates the noise, the battery life is dramatically reduced as well.

I remember the noise was introduced a while back, I believe it was
around the time the "default hertz" for the kernel was changed.

http://kerneltrap.org/node/5411

BTW: I read somewhere that the noise is caused by some low-quality
components in the computer.

Just add the parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Find the section for your
kernel and add processor.max_cstate=2:

This also affects my Dell Latitude D610. A workaround for my laptop is
to add:

processor.max_cstate=2

as a kernel parameter. This prevents the CPU from entering the power-
saving-states that generates the noises (c3 and c4).

[Bug 301299] [NEW] Video playback problem with 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV and compiz after upgrade to Intrepid

2008-11-23 Thread Baard Johansen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading to Interpid, video playback no longer works with compiz
enabled on my TravelMate 660 with Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV.
Whenever I move a window the video goes black, and the same happens when
entering fullscreen. The problem occurs with any videoplayer when
X11/Xshm/Xv is enabled. This used to work on Hardy.

A workaround would be to replace the Gnome hard coding with XIM by
following the how-to under https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ComposeKey
and then add the following to lines to your .XCompose file:

   : "Å" Aring # LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A
WITH RING ABOVE
