[Bug 1054282] Re: No obvious way to restrict shopping suggestions from displaying adult products
There are lots of explicit band names like Karma Sutra, Naked Aggresion, Rudimentary Peni, Penis Flytrap, Sex Gang Children, Sex Pistols, and The Vibrators that could result in pornographic results on the dash. Potentially, fuzzy matching could also cause this for less explicit artistic names too, like mistaking Dido for dildo. [Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens
I know it's very easy to just "sudo apt-get purge unity-lens-shopping" - and we all should really appreciate that Canonical made it that easy to opt out of this new feature-, but I also believe it should be opt-in and have its own separate lens, both for avoiding adware accusations as for cluttering the home lens. I think it should be made obligatory that all features like this one expose options in the Privacy Manager. Ubuntu was praised by the EFF for advancing its privacy management, so let's handle this move properly instead of rushing it and tainting its reputation. (And hey, if you wanna be heard, just stop the ever-annoying "I'm moving to/recomending whatever distro" threats. Things like that add nothing to the arguments in question and make you look like spoiled adolescents. There are good points in this thread, please don't let them become lost amidst flame baits. This is not a wanted behavior, and it could not be because of the reasons in comment #6. [Bug 931245] Re: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars
Yeah, I think that's the best approach. And it doesn't necessarily need to look like a button, it could look like an indicator. This way we would have even more consistency with the panel. [Bug 931245] Re: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars
Hey, I've been testing LIM with the Unity Team ppa, and I'm sorry, I know it's too early to tell how LIM is going to evolve, but I got a suggestion. In the design list John Lea said that, in order to avoid creating problems with moving windows by dragging their titles, LIM would only show when the left mouse button is released, but that solution makes LIM's behavior inconsistent with the behavior of the rest of panel items and of the global menu. In addition, some people were complaining that LIM could take an extra click (which is a false impression, but anyway...). And I was also wondering if the only change to the decorations will be the addition of the menu icon to the left of the window title, which sounds too subtle, it could be not very clear to newbies. I created a mockup suggesting an app button. It's in attached. With an app button we could access a menu item with a single left click - holding the left mouse button, moving it to the menu item we want and releasing the button. This would make LIM's behavior more consistent with the rest of Unity itens, allow accessing menu itens with a single click, increase discoverability, and zero out any chance of interfering with the movement of windows. ** Attachment added: "LIM button.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/931245/+attachment/2916306/+files/LIM%20button.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931245 Title: Finish the implementation of the locally integrated menubars To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz-core/+bug/931245/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
I'm sorry, but talking about "sheer, childish stubborness" after a member of the design team took the trouble of answering our questions and giving us the reasons for the current state of the launcher is IMO dishonest and just plain offensive and disrespectful both to the design team as to the users who gave resonable arguments in this report for a movable launcher. We should strive for a harmonic relationship between all the members of this community and refrain from making such accusations. [Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken
I'm just an Ubuntu user (been one for 3 and a half years) who believes in the "Debian's arrow" and its philosophy and wants to see free software everywhere, and I would like to add that contrarily to what some people have been saying I am one of those who think that keeping Compiz and going for Unity are the best things that have ever happened to Ubuntu. Unity is the sole reason I upgraded from 9.10 to 11.04 and keep upgrading, and it made my brother get interested in Ubuntu too. It's not just the eye candy, they made me much more productive. I'm really glad we didn't get stuck with Gnome Shell like the other distros did. I love the direction Ubuntu's heading and I'm looking forward to Precise. I would like to comment on this subject because I find it sad that Allison's post #81 is being ignored. Allison has a very important point for this discussion: it's both sides of the community who need to engage in a more healthy way, and we already got people from both sides trying to do that. It's easy to say that the developers should get a tougher skin, but that's not something easy (or desirable) to do. Some unsatisfied users are not trying to get a tougher skin in face of what they perceive as harsh answers from the design team, so why should the developers do that? That's not a realistic request. We need to ask for politeness, not for tougher skins. When we are aggressive to someone, we should expect at least the same level of aggressiveness. We're all humans who have trouble keeping a cool head even when trying really hard to. It's naive to expect otherwise. We should recognize that things are getting better. The UDS decision of focusing on power users and allowing more customizability is a huge step forward to settle this matter. There's increased responsiveness of the design team in some bugs, and even in this bug report we can see progress in the answers. I really don't like the facts that one single person can override at will decisions made by the teams if they don't fit their personal view and that the community isn't included in the making of these decisions, but post #110 really makes sense. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't do everything, specially things outside the blueprints. Sebastian's statistics do show that they do a lot for us. The power user community needs to be more comprehensive about the limitations of the design team and to start looking for answers to their "wontfix" problems on their own because it's not even humanely viable for the teams to do all that extra work. We can't demand that the Unity developers go out of their way to satisfy our requests, which may be a priority to us but not to other people. Maybe the community could go crowdfunding in order to raise those "several thousand dollars" for someone who has the hability to fix those bugs in Unity that affect a great deal of users but Canonical can't/won't/don't want to address at the moment? On the other hand, there really is a great deal of users who are not feeling included in Unity development because decisions are made and reverted without their input and because their suggestions do not get a proper answer, and this must be recognized and engaged. It's the lack of communication that causes bugs like this. We know it's hard to give on every bug answers like John Lea's, but this is something I think that Canonical should do at least in those polemical bugs with a very high number of "affects me too". When a developer has already communicated a position in a bug report but the report keeps growing, an update post explaining more throughly what is the position of the design team, on what it was based, and how they would react to a community patch is too important to ignore. If there still is activity in a bug and there's even people forking Unity to fix it, then the bug's not just someone's pet peeve, it's a real problem for a lot of users. Otherwise, the "affects me too" is just pointless. For someone experienced it may seem trivial but it's not so easy for a user to report bugs, specially for those of us who don't have english as mother language. We have to study the problem, reproduce it, find patterns, investigate the cause, gather info, search among thousands of bug reports if it has not been reported already, put the ideas together, and fill in the forms. I love when I read "Thank you for taking your time to report this bug and make Ubuntu better" because it makes me feel that this work is appreciated. Sometimes a short explanation and a link is all that is necessary to make us understand the reasoning behind something. I know time is short, but if a proper answer isn't going to be given, why bother trying to answer at all? One thing that made Ubuntu feel more human to me was videos like Amber Graner's interviews of the developers in the UDS and the Ubuntu team in the Nokia Lumia event. It's really nice to see and hear the people behind Ubuntu, not just to read them. And lots of you guys and girls are really
[Bug 668415] Re: Movement of Unity launcher
I want to thank you John Lea for your attention and your patience in answering questions. It's really appreciated! People complain about the design team, but more often than not users act almost like bosses to them. Do you think that Unity bashing will make anyone more likely to listen to you if you say you have been using Ubuntu ever since 6.06? If you want to prove your point, the best way to do this is to do usability tests, and not with the Gnome-2 power users, but with the simple people that Ubuntu is aiming for. Get two Ubuntu computers, one with the default left-launcher and another with the bottom-launcher from Unity plugin rotated, and, with a similar approach to the design team, invite users to use them and share their impressions. This way, you will have factual data to share, collected in a more scientific manner, and you will be able to make arguments based on something other than your own personal opinion and workflow. I'm someone who likes the launcher on the left but understands that lots of people don't like it, so I voted for this bug. I know it's frustrating that things now are not the way everyone wants, but John's answers are very reasonable. The previous reason for the lack of movement of the launcher was the BFB, but now that reason is gone, there is a lack of humanpower. That's the bottom line, and it's something totally understandable. I'm sure this issue will become a priority when Unity becomes more stable (after 12.04) and the primary focus shifts to the phone and tablet interfaces, as the transition between the landscape and portrait orientations of the devices will become a challenge for the launcher. Until then, there's a Compiz plugin that anyone can install, and it should really get more technical support from the community, plus an effort to help Pavel Golikov to test and to iron out the plugin would make its possibility of a future acceptance into the Unity main code smoother. Focus should be turned to this. As to left-handed people, this is an important usability issue, and there already exists a (accidental) work in progress for fixing that: bug #654988 is about mirroring the interface. The fix for Unity 2D was released, and a fix for Unity 3D will be released when it is possible. I'm sure this is not useful for RTL locales only, but would be welcomed by the left-handed people who commented on this bug report too, so it would be nice to vote for and comment on that bug and to ask to be able to use this also in LTR locales.a -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668415 Title: Movement of Unity launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/668415/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives
Hadmut, Unity will become more customizable as soon as the developers make it more stable. That's just not possible right now with the huge amount of work to be done. But from what you are saying, clearly what you want is Xubuntu. It's a great spin-off, fully supported by Canonical. Try it out. But please let's stay focused on the issue of this bug. Maybe when an application is maximized, the launcher could show a small tab in the middle of the left side of the screen, and this would be the only area where we can reveal it. In attached there's a (very amateurish) mock-up. ** Attachment added: "Launcher tab.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/765819/+attachment/2654002/+files/Launcher%20tab.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765819 Title: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/765819/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon
@marcobiscaro2112: I noticed that the Ubuntu Unity plugin rotated is basically a fork, right? Well, I agree that's not something that we should strive for, and I was thinking more about the possibility of releasing a Compiz plugin that didn't need forking Unity. Is that possible? @everyone: Something a little similar to what Marco proposed in #58 could be implemented basically with the current Unity structure at least for some cases. Go to CompizConfig Settings Manager > Window Management > Scale plugin > Shortcuts and tick the "click on the desktop to show desktop" option. Now when the scale plugin gets triggered after clicking on the launcher, another click on the application icon will minimize the windows. However, there are two problems with this: this only happens when we have multiple instances of an application, and it will maximize all windows, not just the ones for that application. Nevertheless, if you're minimizing to see the desktop, this could be useful. If you want to use another application instead of seeing the desktop it would require another click on the launcher, but there's a bug related to this: clicking on the application icon on the launcher will maximize all windows instead of the application you want. This is bug #871801 and it already has a fix pending. It's far from ideal, but it's an option that already exists. Maybe it would be easier if changes could be made to the Scale plugin instead of Unity, making it minimize only the scaled windows? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/733349 Title: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking its Launcher Icon To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 682788] Re: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens
"Apple sells iMacs with screen sizes 1920x1080 and 2560x1440, and the Thunderbolt display at 2560x1440. It is not the case that a global menu bar is not ergonomic on large screens." I would love an Unity AppMenu (let's hope for a Compiz plugin!), but Manny's last proposition really is the most reasonable one for this cycle, and it could increase menu discoverability and its persistence. I think this discussion gave us good solutions for two major problems with the global menu: 1- An option to turn global menus on/off for non-maximized windows/always off; 2- A fourth window button to turn menu persistence on/off, which could work both for maximized and non-maximized windows. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/682788 Title: Global menu is not ergonomical on large screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/682788/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
