[Bug 1969577] Re: Small icons in app grid of Activities Overview

2022-05-29 Thread Duke
With regard to the difference between the app grid when using the default
Ubuntu Dock extension and the Dash to Dock for COSMIC extension, it looks like:
* in the case of the default Ubuntu Dock extension, the elements of the app
grid are centered horizontally relative to the app grid, not including the dock
(and their size is calculated based on the available width); this is why the
app icons are smaller, but the elements in the app grid are centered correctly
relative to the app grid (the left and right margins have the same width)
* in the case of the Dash to Dock for COSMIC extension, the elements of the app
grid are centered horizontally relative to the screen, including the dock (and
their size is calculated based on the available width); this is why the app
icons are bigger, but the elements in the app grid are not centered correctly
relative to the app grid (the left margin is smaller than the right margin)

[Bug 1969577] Re: Small icons in app grid of Activities Overview

2022-04-30 Thread Duke
The icons have the right size when the dock is disabled (as mentioned in
the original bug description), but also when the dock is moved to the
bottom (see the attached screenshot). However I prefer the dock to be on
the left, so for me this is not really a solution either.

[Bug 1969577] Re: Small icon in Activity Overview

2022-04-23 Thread Duke
I tried out Ubuntu 22.04 today, and I came across the same issue. The
app icons in the app grid are very small and the app names very short (I
know the full name is shown when you hover over an app icon, but I don't
think that makes this issue less important). I'm going to attach a
screenshot too. FYI: My screen resolution is 1366 x 768 (16:9).

I don't have this issue in Ubuntu 20.04, but I know the Gnome activities
overview has been redesigned since Gnome 40.

On a side note, the order of the app icons in the app grid seems to be
random. I know the icons can be rearranged manually, but I think it
would be better if the icons were sorted alphabetically by default.
However I suppose it will be better to create a separate bug report for
that issue (if one doesn't exist yet).

The to912 script needs to be re-run after the audio sleeps. I have been running
it manually for two years. Yesterday, I wrote a script that runs automatically
after booting. It is much more convenient now. The script snippet:

LAST=0
while true; do
#pacmd list-sink-inputs  | grep -w state | grep -q RUNNING && CUR=1 || CUR=0
cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/status | grep -q RUNNING && CUR=1 || CUR=0

sleep 1
[ $LAST != $CUR ] && echo "audio state: $LAST -> $CUR @ $(date)"
if [ $LAST == 0 ] && [ $CUR == 1 ]; then
echo "run fix_audio ..."
./to912_fix_audio.sh &> /dev/null

LAST=$CUR
done

[Bug 1913642] [NEW] Background color of certain tooltips is solid black after upgrading yaru-theme-gkt to version 20.04.10.1

2021-01-28 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

1) Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

2) Package version: yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.10.1

For example when hovering over an item in the left panel of Gnome Files,
a tooltip is displayed.

When yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.6 is installed, the background color
of the tooltip is dark grey with some transparency (similar to the color
of the tooltips that are displayed when hovering over an icon in the
Ubuntu Dock for example).

After upgrading yaru-theme-gtk to version 20.04.10.1, the background
color of the tooltip is solid black (and the tooltip box is higher).

See the attached screenshot: on the left the result when yaru-theme-gtk
version 20.04.6 is installed (the expected result), on the right when
yaru-theme-gtk version 20.04.10.1 is installed (the actual result).

3) Expected result: the background color of the tooltips should be dark
grey, with some transparency, like elsewhere.

4) Actual result: the background color of the tooltips is solid black.

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-09-23 Thread Duke Fong
@kasper93

I still have the metallic sound issue, after did 3 steps you list in
#99. (No problem without pulseaudio.)

It must be that a certain detail has not been handled properly. Do you
know what it is?

I have to put this line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, without it, the
sound card driver refuses to install:

options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0

By the way, my laptop's id and model are not in the patch. I added a line to
sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c by myself:

SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x144d, 0xc188, "Samsung Galaxy Flex Book (NT930QCGI-
PS5)", ALC298_FIXUP_SAMSUNG_HEADPHONE_VERY_QUIET),

[Bug 1876468] Re: For video files the preview window reopens after closing

2020-05-25 Thread Duke
The problem I described doesn't seem to occur all the time, but I don't
know what causes it, why it disappears and then reappears.

For example it seems like the problem disappears temporarily after
opening the video by clicking the "Open with Videos" button from the
preview window and then closing it, but it reappears after some time.

Is there anything I can do to help in finding what causes the problem?
Any logs I could take and share for example?

[Bug 1876471] Re: Trash desktop icon is not translated

2020-05-03 Thread Duke
Apparently this isn't only a problem of the desktop icons package after
all. In Files "Trash" is translated as expected, with the exception of
the breadcrumb item (see the attached screenshot).

Should I assign this bug report to another package? If so, what package
should it be assigned to?

[Bug 1876471] [NEW] Trash desktop icon is not translated

2020-05-02 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

1) Release: Ubuntu 20.04

2) Package version: gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons 20.04.0-1

3) Expected behaviour
The name of the trash icon should be in the language of the current user.

4) Actual behaviour
The trash icon on the desktop is always named "Trash". It would be better if
the name of this icon were translated, using the same name as elsewhere (e.g.
inside Gnome Files). For example: "Corbeille" if the current user's language is
French, "Prullenbak" if the language is Dutch...

[Bug 1876468] [NEW] For video files the preview window reopens after closing

2020-05-02 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

1) Release: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

2) Package version: gnome-sushi 3.34.0-2

3) Expected behaviour

* Pressing the spacebar opens the preview window
* Pressing the spacebar once more or clicking the close icon closes the preview

4) Actual behaviour

For most file types Gnome Sushi works as expected, however for video files:
* Pressing the spacebar opens the preview window (as expected)
* Pressing the spacebar once more or clicking the close icon closes the preview
window but immediately reopens the preview window; the only way to exit this
loop seems to be to either open the video normally by clicking the "Open with
Videos" button in the preview window then close the "Videos" window or to close
the main "Files" window while the preview window is still shown.

[Bug 1447809] Re: package clamav-daemon 0.98.6+dfsg-1ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: подпроцесс установлен сценарий post-installation возвратил код ошибки 2

2015-04-24 Thread duke
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1438745 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1438745

This seems to be a fix for the "error
/var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst: 626:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst: cannot create : Directory
nonexistent"

line 626 of clamav-daemon.postinst has a typo:

[ -n "$PidFile" ] && echo "PidFile $PidFile" >> $DEBCONFILE

should actually be

[ -n "$PidFile" ] && echo "PidFile $PidFile" >> $DEBCONFFILE

Source:

I edited the file /var/lib/dpkg/info/clamav-daemon.postinst making the
change, then re-ran apt-get install clamav which then worked.

[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-07-27 Thread Duke
Not a power user here, but I know when my machine is stammering while
silent. System monitor revealed 45% cpu usage idling on the desktop.
Moving cursor pushes it to 100%. Ran 11.4 previously, but support ran
out and things started to fall apart. 14.04 is only OS on drive that ran
11.4 and xp pretty well. Celeron M 1.7ghz. (Old inspiron 600m) 2gb ddr2
333mhz. If my registering this helps escalate the issue I have surpassed
my stature in geekdom.

[Bug 1325186] [NEW] gdebi-gtk crashed with UnicodeDecodeError in __getitem__(): 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xeb in position 10: invalid continuation byte

2014-05-31 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

Hello,

gdebi-gtk crashed with the following error:

gdebi-gtk crashed with UnicodeDecodeError in __getitem__():
'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xeb in position 10: invalid
continuation byte

when installing the following deb package:

http://eid.belgium.be/en/binaries/eid-
mw_4.0.4r1253_amd64_tcm406-178472.deb

I'll attach the crash report.

The same problem has already been reported in a comment for bug #1301857
"gdebi-gtk crashed with UnicodeDecodeError in commit(): 'utf-8' codec
can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 0: unexpected end of data", but this
bug has status "Fix Released" so I'm creating a new bug report for this
specific problem. The previous comment can be found here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdebi/+bug/1301857/comments/5

Thanks a lot in advance.

[Bug 1315328] [NEW] Black icons on dark grey background in right click menu of title bar when using Radiance theme

2014-05-02 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
I am using the default Ubuntu Ambiance theme.
I enabled "menus-have-icons" in dconf-editor under
"org.gnome.desktop.interface" so that menu icons are shown.
When I right click the title bar of a window, the icons (for Minimize, Maximize
and Close) are black on a dark grey background, so they are not very visible. I
suppose they should be light grey instead, as is the menu text.

[Bug 1313129] [NEW] Duplicate results in Home Scope under Files & Folders

2014-04-26 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

Some files appear twice in the Home Scope under Files & Folders. When I
go the the Files & Folders Scope, these files appear under "Recently
used" and under "Downloads". It is logical that in the Files & Folders
Scope the same file appears under "Recently used" as well as under
"Downloads", but in the Home Scope the same file should appear only
once.

For the attached screenshots, I first cleared all my usage data (via
Security & Privacy - Files & Applications - Clear usage data), then
opened 6 documents from the Downloads folder.

Now that all windows are borderless, when I auto-resize a window to the
left part of the screen (by dragging it to the left border of the
screen) I can no longer grab the left, top and bottom border for
resizing afterwards (the resize arrows do not appear). I suppose that,
when the border was 1 pixel wide, there was always the possibility to
grab the border in order to resize the window.

Maybe there should be a small (even 1 pixel could make a difference)
invisible draggable area inside the window too? I suppose there is no
such draggable area inside the window at the moment so as not to
interfere with the interior of the window (the scroll bars for example)?
Or is there another reason?

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2014-01-05 Thread Duke
In the case when some processes are still running for a user even if the user
is no longer logged in (see e.g. comment #10):
- In the session menu the check mark behind the name of the logged out user is
still there
- However on the greeter there is no little triangle before the name of the
logged out user
So apparently the session menu and the greeter are not using the same
information to determine whether a user is logged in or not. Can somebody
confirm this, and if so, any idea why it is so?

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2014-01-02 Thread Duke
In some cases, when a logged out user still has a check mark behind his
name, running the 'loginctl list-users' command seems to trigger the
disappearance of the check mark. It looks like the session menu (session
indicator) is not always notified when a user is no longer logged in.

Scenario:

* User 'administrator' is logged out and user 'duke' is logged in, but
both users have a check mark behind their names in the session menu

* Run 'loginctl list-users' in the console

duke@desktop-pc:~$ loginctl list-users
   UID USER
  1001 duke

1 users listed.

* In the session menu the check mark behind logged out user
'administrator' has now disappeared.

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2013-12-21 Thread Duke
I have the same problem at the moment.
User 'administrator' is logged out but still has a check mark behind his name
in the session menu (I am currently logged in as 'duke').
However on the greeter user 'administrator' has no little triangle on the left

The output of loginctl is similar to the previous one:

duke@desktop-pc:~$ loginctl list-users

  1001 duke

2 users listed.
duke@desktop-pc:~$ loginctl user-status administrator

[Bug 607796] Re: Launcher, Window management - Dragging and holding a selection over an entry in the Launcher should spread out windows belonging to that application

2013-12-12 Thread Duke
Apparently this bug is not fixed yet. As Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will still be
shipping with Unity 7, I hope it will be fixed by then. Unfortunately I
don't have the necessary skills to do it myself. Thanks a lot in advance
to the person who can get it fixed, I think it would really improve the
Unity user experience.

The problem occurs at the moment.
I was logged in as 'duke' but logged out (via the session menu) and then logged

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2013-12-03 Thread Duke
This bug had been marked as a duplicate of bug #1245295 "Greeter indicates
session is logged into after logout"
However a fix has been released for bug #1245295 (that effectively fixes the
bug with the greeter) but the bug described above still occurs from time to
time (but not always), so I removed bug #1245295 as a duplicate of this bug.

[Bug 1184262] Re: [logind] times out too early, stuck in PrepareForSleep, causing network and other services to not resume

2013-11-07 Thread Duke
Here's another D-Bus system bus monitoring log. I followed the
instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingDBus#How_to_monitor_the_system_bus (see
also: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd-
shim/+bug/1184262/comments/116)

After suspending and resuming networking was not working. I had to
execute 'sudo nmcli nm sleep false' in order to get the networking
working again.

The only fix I have applied up to now is the one I found at
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/fix-wireless-or-wired-network-not.html

Aside: It seems that when I run 'nmcli nm sleep false' as a non-sudo
user, the networking starts working again, but afterwards I am unable to
suspend/restart/shutdown from the session menu.

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

About the scenario described above (see comment #6):

When I check the state with loginctl (see comment #5):

$ loginctl list-users

There are no users listed, but those that had logged in before still
have a triangle before their name on the login screen indicating they
are still logged in (even though they have logged out now).

[Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2013-10-22 Thread Duke
Another scenario that appears to cover the same bug (See also:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/237638) :

When I log in and then log out, on the login screen there is a small
triangle before my user name indicating I am still logged in (although I
no longer am). However this triangle stays there until I restart my
computer. Even though the logged-in symbol in the session menu
disappears in certain cases (see comment #4 above), the triangle before
the user name on the login screen always stays there.

It looks like whether the user is still logged in is determined in
another way in the session menu (the logged-in symbol) and on the login
screen (the small triangle). Can somebody confirm that ?

[Bug 1242151] Re: COLOURlovers dash plugin appears twice and unable to go to next dash plugin in the preview window

2013-10-21 Thread Duke
I just did an update (using Software Updater). I got the message "The
software on your computer is up to date." but the problems are still
there (the COLOURlovers plugin still appears twice and I can't go the
next plugin in the preview window).

A second user present on my system has the same problems (I checked the
problem with that user yesterday too).

However when I log in as the third user available on my system, the
COLOURlovers plugin appears only once. I hadn't checked the problem with
this user before, but I don't know if that's the reason why it's working
now for that user.

Is it possible that the fix doesn't work if your checked the Dash
plugins before (as I described above)? If so, is there maybe a manual
fix?

[Bug 1242151] [NEW] COLOURlovers dash plugin appears twice and unable to go to next dash plugin in the preview window

2013-10-19 Thread Duke
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 this morning.

When I open the Dash, go the Application lens, click "Filter results"
and select "Dash plugins", the COLOURlovers plugin appears twice.

When I click on one of the two COLOURlovers plugins the preview window opens.
When I click on the arrow at the left (or press the left arrow key on the
keyboard) the previous Dash plugin is correctly shown in the preview window
(which in my case is Clementine).
But when I click on the arrow at the right (or press the right arrow key on the
keyboard) while in the preview window for the COLOURlovers plugin, I always
stay on the preview for the COLOURlovers plugin instead of going to the next
plugin (which should be Devhelp).

I use 2 different user accounts on my Ubuntu 13.04 machine: an

Playing internet radio streams in Rhythmbox works when I log in with the

[Bug 988290] Re: Resolution change with KVM switch on Precise

2012-05-15 Thread Duke Murden
I believe the behavior is caused by the timed lock of the session. If I
lock the screen before switching the KVM the session retains the screen
settings. But if I leave the screen unlocked, switch the KVM, and let
the session get locked due to inactivity, then the resolution of the
screen gets changed.

[Bug 881724] Re: update manager crashes on opening

2011-11-09 Thread josh duke
To your first query:

Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:11.04
Codename: natty

To the second:

# Default behavior for the release upgrader.

[DEFAULT]
# Default prompting behavior, valid options:
#
# never - Never check for a new release.
# normal - Check to see if a new release is available. If more than one new
# release is found, the release upgrader will attempt to upgrade to
# the release that immediately succeeds the currently-running
# release.
# lts- Check to see if a new LTS release is available. The upgrader
# will attempt to upgrade to the first LTS release available after
# the currently-running one. Note that this option should not be
# used if the currently-running release is not itself an LTS
# release, since in that case the upgrader won't be able to
# determine if a newer release is available.

2011-11-08 Thread josh duke
That spat out a lot of options in the command line terminal. I didn't
change any of them and just closed the terminal after running the line
you gave me.

When I ran the Update Manager and hit "check", I thought we had it at
first. It showed a progress bar and said "loading software list", then
"downloading release". It still never gave the option for upgrading to
11.10, though.

2011-11-08 Thread josh duke
By the way, after 6 months of miserable stumbling around with Unity, I
finally realized that I can select "Ubuntu Classic" on startup and make
everything right again, haha.

I've been wanting 11.10 to see if it made Unity any more tolerable. If
I still don't like it, does the new version have the option of running
the "normal" interface?

You are a genius.  Now we're getting somewhere.  That seemed to fix it;
I installed all of the updates (there were a TON of them).

Now, however, the update manager doesn't offer me the update to Ocelot.
Am I missing something simple? I've checked for updates several times
and restarted the computer; no luck.
