remnant of a previous by-source install.

Hm, but I don't have "Hide from taskbar", so it may not be a duplicate
of the other bug.

I don't mean that the window doesn't appear in the window list or
whatever.

I mean that there is no launcher for the app. I have to do Alt-F2 and
type terminator, to run the command manually.

[Bug 1726817] [NEW] No launcher appearing in gnome shell menu

2017-10-24 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Public bug reported:

Since upgrade to Ubuntu 17.10 with the default gnome shell desktop:

1. terminator doesn't appear in the menu (hit windows key, type terminator,
nothing);
2. if you manage to launch it from another terminal, and add it to favourites
in the Dock, still when activating the Dock launcher terminator doesn't launch.

I even tried to purge the package and re-install, to no avail.

[Bug 772445] Re: Dragging image from firefox/chrome to dock causes lagg/freeze

[Bug 784502] [NEW] ubuntu-desktop should depend on "linux-image"

2011-05-18 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, but the linux kernel 2.6.35 was
kept, 2.6.38 was not installed. I discovered in synaptic that the meta-
package 'linux-image" is not installed even though "ubuntu-desktop" is
installed. Wasn't "ubuntu-desktop" supposed to pull the whole base
system? I'm confused...

[Bug 58430] Re: Command-line recovery required when fsck reports an unexpectedy inconsistency

2009-11-18 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
This happened to a friend of mine today. She had to phone me, and I had
to explain to her about the 'fsck -y'. It wasn't even clear to me what
was wrong, she just said "it says it can't mount a filesystem", on the
phone.

So, yes, making this process easier for non-expert people, a simple
yes/no question with a menu, is the way to go. Ubuntu is being more
difficult to use than it needs to be...

[Bug 441156] Re: totem-gstreamer does not play sound

2009-11-12 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
I confirm the problem; totem does not seem to work without pulseaudio.

This is what makes people mad about PA; the whole system is increasingly
being built around PA in a way that sooner or later it won't work
without PA. In karmik, the volume control applet no longer works
without PA, and now I am seeing that neither does the movie player.
Given the fragmentation in the audio community, I think choice should be
given to at least some end users to be able to uninstall PA and just use
plain ALSA. That choice is being gradually removed from us, release by
release.  That is not nice.

[Bug 368500] Re: pairing mouse don't work on 9.04

2009-07-24 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
I have Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000 and had that problem. Making
automatic pairing work is a pain. I got mine working again through the
GUI, luck, and reboots. Also had to turn the mouse off and on many
times, and press the reset button. It was _hard_ to get it to work.

You can get hidd by installing the package bluez-compat.

I have the same problem since recently. Pairing used to work, but
yesterday I lost pairing with the mouse and could not ever pair again no
matter how much I tried (inc. reboots). It says pairing successful, but
in fact the mouse does not control the X pointer.

The solution by Przemysław worked perfectly just now. Thanks
Przemysław!

[Bug 321176] Re: [Jaunty] alarm-clock causes screen to freeze

2009-05-02 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
About your test case:

 1. It uses threads with incorrect locking, see attached patch to fix
it;

 2. In my system, X is not frozen, just becomes very slow. But the
program is asking for trouble by continually updating the status icon in
a while True: loop without even a pause for breath between each loop;

3. I am actually able to kill the program with a simple Ctrl-C,
evidencing that X is not completely frozen.

So perhaps this is just a performance issue wrt gtk status icons. I see
no bug here, just a denial of service. Or we could consider a gtk bug
for momentarily freezing an entire X session while a status icon is
being updated.

[Bug 351524] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in rb_python_module_load_with_gil()

2009-04-30 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Oops, never mind! Beginner's mistake, I feel stupid :P

 libpython2.6.so.1.0 => /usr/local/lib/libpython2.6.so.1.0

Removing the rogue python lib from /usr/local takes care of the problem.

[Bug 351524] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in rb_python_module_load_with_gil()

2009-04-30 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
OK, apparently the rhythmbox shell is linking to libpython:

g...@dark-tower:ns-3-dev$ ldd /usr/bin/rhythmbox|grep python
libpython2.6.so.1.0 => /usr/local/lib/libpython2.6.so.1.0
(0x7f43a477b000)

But there is something wrong:

g...@dark-tower:ns-3-dev$ objdump --dynamic-syms /usr/bin/rhythmbox|grep Py_Init
  DF *UND*    Py_InitModule4_64
  DF *UND*    Py_Initialize

The program binary does not seem to be re-exporting the symbols acquired
from dynamically linked libraries. My libtool-fu is not good enough to
understand why this is so. Apparently this is not enough:

rhythmbox_LDFLAGS = -export-dynamic -no-undefined

2009-04-30 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
I have encountered this problem too just now, with an up-to-date jaunty

Rhythmbox-ERROR **: Failed to initialize pygobject

Aborted (core dumped)

Someone should be linking to libpython...
 1. Either the pygobject module could link to libpython;
 2. Or, rhythmbox should link to libpython.

Apparently, neither one is linking to libpython, and so python modules
fail to load due to missing symbols.

Attaching patch to make the error more evident (init_pygobject should be
considered deprecated in favor of pygobject_init!).

[Bug 321176] Re: [Jaunty] alarm-clock causes screen to freeze

2009-04-16 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
It seems to be a python issue, but only when dealing with
legacy/deprecated classes. It would not be hard to fix the
applications; where you see:

class Foo:
...

Change it to:

class Foo(object):
   ...

And the problem should go away.

not there in kernel 2.6.22 (gutsy), so I suspect the new kernel is to
blame for the latency problems. But the low speed has always been there
in all the kernels I tried. Well, at least it works, so I shouldn't
complain so much... :P

[Bug 178544] Re: e-d-s should use gnome-keyring again

2008-02-05 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Definitely! Keyring now can easily become transparent, no unlock
keyring password annoyance anymore. And I _really_ hate to store
passwords in a plain text file (well, it's base64 encoded IIRC, but that
is trivial to crack), so I end up not saving some of my more sensitive
passwords, which is double annoying :(

[Bug 183839] USB file transfers extremely slow and eventually cause kernel freezes

2008-01-17 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

Every time I transfer a large file from my USB driver, the transfer
starts extremely slow, then the kernel eventually freezes. This
happened to me with all 2.6.24-[24] kernels so far, but the old gutsy
2.6.22-14 kernel that I luckily still have lying around works
flawlessly.

[Bug 181320] Re: [hardy] Restricted Driver Manager does not install rt73usb firmware

2008-01-11 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Amazing, you are right!

I had just noticed that with kernel 2.6.24-3 the rt73usb driver finally
started working. It turns out that I saw this bug report and noticed
that I had installed /lib/firmware/rt73.bin, when I tried the ralink
driver (which does not even compile with recent kernel headers, BTW).
Moving the firmware file away made the driver stop working. Moving it
back made it work again.

=> Confirmed!

Some of these intallations rename the pl executable. SWI-Prolog however
loads a system init file called .rc in the Prolog home dir
(typically /usr/lib/pl-). After renaming pl this file needs to
be renamed accordingly. And, of course, you need to be running X11 ...

This problem is still present in gutsy and hardy. The proposed solution

So, all I can see is that the crash is related to the eDonkey protocol.
Any idea how to debug this further? I already recompiled the package to
keep debugging symbols, but apparently that's not enough...

Oh, never mind my last comment. The lock file is created on demand,
only on first DAV access. It works now.

Hm.. maybe the ownership of the directory is not the main problem. DAV
lock file is still not being created after fixing the lock directory :(

[Bug 150640] /var/lock/apache2 created with root:root ownership (apache2 can't create lock files in it)

2007-10-08 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

/etc/init.d/apache2 does:

case $1 in
start)
[ -f /etc/apache2/httpd.conf ] || touch /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
[ -d /var/run/apache2 ] || mkdir -p /var/run/apache2
[ -d /var/lock/apache2 ] || mkdir -p /var/lock/apache2
#ssl_scache shouldn't be here if we're just starting up.
[ -f /var/run/apache2/ssl_scache ] && rm -f
/var/run/apache2/*ssl_scache*
log_begin_msg "Starting web server (apache2)..."
if $APACHE2CTL start; then
log_end_msg 0
else
log_end_msg 1
fi
;;

Since /etc/init.d/apache2 is start by root, mkdir -p will end up
creating a directory that is owned by root. The file /etc/apache2/mods-
available/dav_fs.conf contains:

DAVLockDB /var/lock/apache2/DAVLock

Since the directory /var/lock/apache2/ is owned by root, the module is
unable create the lock file, and webdav does not work correctly (only
allows reading).

To fix the problem for real libgtkspell should be using a weak reference
to the GtkTextView object, so that when the GtkTextView is destroyed
GtkSpell is notified and removes the reference.

[Bug 138145] Re: missing ia32 libXcomposite

2007-09-09 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Exactly, it's a rather important bug for 64-bit users... :-/

For those interested, I managed to solve the problem in a hackish way by
simply downloading the i386 package from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/libs/libxcomposite1, opening with
archive manager (file-roller, needs to open once, then open again the
'data' archive), and extrat the files to /usr/lib32. Now vmware runs
for me.  SecondLife as well.

[Bug 126520] Re: smoothScroll forgotten / not shutting down cleanly

2007-08-06 Thread Gustavo Carneiro
Yes, it works correctly.

But there's something simply not right about epiphany. I close all the
windows / tabs and the epiphany process keeps running in the background.
Morever, I remember once playing a music in a flash applet, and when I
closed the tab the music kept playing in the background. There, I can
still reproduce the bug as I type this. I went to last.fm in a tab,
started playing some music from the flash player, then I close the tab
and it keeps playing... :(

I should probably file this upstream, I guess...
