[Bug 320117] [NEW] lack of documentation for abook costum fields

2009-01-22 Thread itai
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: abook

Ubuntu version: 8.10 (intrepid)
Package version: 0.5.6-5

The 'abook' contact manager supports custom fields, but there is no
explanation as to how to use them in the man page (neither in 'abook'
nor 'abookrc'). A little digging and grepping found that one should add
lines such as the following to one's .abook/abookrc:

customfield 1 Birthday

But this should be documented.

(Peculiarly enough, a different method entirely appears at
http://linux.die.net/man/5/abookrc , except that this presumed man page
does not appear to exist elsewhere.)

[Bug 373528] [NEW] USB Headsets do not work with ALSA

2009-05-07 Thread Itai Molenaar
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04 x64
Kernel 2.6.28-12 I believe

When I plug my headset/mic combo in to a usb port, the computer recognizes the
headset, but does not initiate the device with ALSA, I would have to switch to
OSS to use the headset. I have a Genius product, but unfortunately, there are
similar problems with Logitec headsets. The exact option for me in the Sound
Preferences window for my set is:
"Elite Silicon USB Audio Device USB Audio (ALSA)" When I start a test, I get
the following error;

"audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback."

Also, when I try a sound capture test, I get the following error:
"gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat:
Could not open audio device for playback."

Obviously, sound should be working without these errors, and with sound.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04

Hi, when I try to mount a .iso image using the command line, (mount -o

[Bug 369032] [NEW] Need to manually enable sound on HP Pavilions.

2009-04-28 Thread Itai Molenaar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

On any HP Pavilion, no matter what release of Ubuntu (Jaunty, Intrepid,
etc) owners always need to edit alsa-base.conf and manually enable
sound, which is not only intimidating to anyone not used to such
endeavours, it is an irritation to everyone else, assuming they can find
a correct fix, which I know many people cannot without help. If it is
HP's fault, they will need more pressure than just me to fix this, and
if it can be simply changed by the people here, more the better.
Luckily, it is only the Pavilions that have this problem, but many
people use them, which would be a deterrent for many people. Thank you
for taking this into consideration.

OK, the envy thing gets it back to where it was in 8.10, one big desktop across
two screens. I don't know that it will survive a reboot because I can't save
the configuration. Of course, Ubuntu can run for months without rebooting.
There is a button to save it, but it won't let you unless you are root, and to
become root you have to call the thing from a terminal with the gksudo
(whatever it is called) command and I don't know what it is called. "NVIDIA X
Server Settings" is the title bar, but I doubt that is really it. If I try
that I just get this: p...@pete-desktop:~$ gksudo NVIDIA X Server Settings
p...@pete-desktop:~$ It asks for the password in between, but the NVIDIA X
Server Settings doesn't open. The xorg.conf does not reflect what is really
running: Section "Screen" Identifier"Default Screen" DefaultDepth
  24 EndSection Section "Module" Load"glx" Disable"dri2"
EndSection Section "Device" Identifier"Default Device" Driver
"nvidia" EndSection It should have all kinds of stuff in it about the dual
screens, twinview, xinerama and all that.

"Elite Silicon USB Audio Device USB Audio (ALSA)" When I start a test, I get
the following error;

Thank you
for taking this into consideration.

specifically concerning sound. In this bug, one would turn the computer on, and
no sound will come out at all, even though both hardware and driver was
detected. Through the infinite wisdom of the experienced people who saw my
question in the Launchpad Answers section, I have found the correct solution to
to this problem, specifically;

  Opening /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

  and adding these lines

  # Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
  options snd-pcsp index=-2
  alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
  alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
  options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
  options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

Even though I am using Ubuntu 8.10, this is a common bug found in multiple
distros.
Alsa-base version 1.0.17 by the way.
Is there anyway to fix this bug in a patch or update, so people who buy
Pavilions will automatically be able to use sound on Ubuntu without trawling
the internet, looking for a fix like I have? If there is a fix eminent, then I
apologise in advance for wasting your time. Thank you for taking the time to
see this.

[Bug 369030] [NEW] Can't find ext4 filesystem on dev loop0

2009-04-28 Thread Itai Molenaar
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04
Ext4 filesystem

Hi, when I try to mount a .iso image using the command line, (mount -o
loop -t ext4 example.iso /destination) The mount fails and I get the
following error message:

"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so"

The results of dmesg | tail:

"[27349.544574] sdb: sdb1

There is a button to save it, but it won't let you unless you are root, and to
become root you have to call the thing from a terminal with the gksudo

"Elite Silicon USB Audio Device USB Audio (ALSA)" When I start a test, I get
the following error;

[Bug 382610] Re: Conky doesn't display bandwith being used by default as it should, often related to the name of your network device

2009-06-02 Thread Itai Molenaar
What I assume you are using, is an already customized conky
configuration, downloaded from the web. This configuration is not pre-
optimized for your personal use, it is created as a vanilla
configuration to be customized by the people who download it. As it is a
configuration created from a second party which is not the
responsibility of conky maintainers, this is an invalid bug.

[Bug 370141] [NEW] ISO 9660 Extraction Fails

2009-04-30 Thread Itai Molenaar
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.04, ext4 filesystem-
When I try to extract ISO 9660 files (while loading the archive), I get the
following error in a command line output:
"CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format" This is a problem on multiple computers, so
I do not think I messed up any settings.
