[Bug 1359439] Re: [ 7.287663] systemd-logind[1057]: Failed to start unit user@126.service: Unknown unit: user@126.service

2014-10-27 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Same here while running Ubuntu 14.10 server in a VirtualBox VM:

[ 62.851445] systemd-logind[1191]: Failed to start unit user@1000.service:
Unknown unit: user@1000.service
[ 62.854044] systemd-logind[1191]: failed to start user service: Unknown
unit: user@1000.service

This happens after a clean standard install; selected packages is the
minimum base install plus openssh-server.

Any idea how to fix this?

[Bug 1187483] Re: wireless wpa2/enterprise authentication issues

2013-12-18 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Confirm this bug in Xubuntu 13.10 (no surprise, as Ubuntu 13.10 is
affected), and the workaround in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1187483/comments/3 is working
for me as well.

thanks for your understanding. Nevertheless, our BDFL is completely

I don't believe you. I have high end machines too... They all
 work.
(About 25) Some took some effort, but only a few systems with
 old and
cheap stuff. This is being typed on a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
 motherboard
with a Inetl Corei7 Quad core, and nVidia GTS250 graphics with 24
 gig of
ram. (Work system, so that is why the low end graphics) Worked
 out of
the box with Lucid. I believe there is a lot more to your
 story. Like
perhaps your "high end" stuff is the cheapest Chinese components
 you can
source... And they don't have drivers? Those can take
 a bit
more effort. Or perhaps the well known Intel i855 graphics
 chipset bug?
(Fixed in Maverik, by the way)

Only being willing to put an hour into learning a new system is
 not a
 bug we can easily patch.

But if you want help, go ahead and e-mail me. I bet I can find
 drivers
 for much of your stuff.

 1. Visit a local PC store.

 What happens:
 2. Observe that a majority of PCs for sale have non-free software
 pre-installed.

[Bug 153996] Re: libdb4.4 in gutsy breaks postgrey and subversion

2008-01-11 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
To clarify things a bit:

The problem with subversion and libdb4.4 still persists, as you can see
from the following:

$ svnadmin create --fs-type bdb /home/mneisen/tmp/test-repo
$ svn checkout file:///home/mneisen/tmp/test-repo/ working-copy
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

$ sudo dpkg -l | grep ^ii | grep libdb4.4
ii libdb4.4 4.4.20-8.1ubuntu3.1

$ sudo dpkg -l | grep ^ii | grep subversion
ii subversion 1.4.4dfsg1-1ubuntu3
Advanced version control system
ii subversion-helper-scripts 0.5-2
various tools to help with the use and maint
ii subversion-tools 1.4.4dfsg1-1ubuntu3

So, it would be nice if libdb4.4 would be fixed so that subversion can
be used with BDB repositories. Thanks!

[Bug 145267] Re: Add rubygems bin to PATH

2008-01-09 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
I would like to leave a "me too" note here. Ruby is becoming
increasingly important for web applications (Rails, merb, ramaze; you
name it!) and administrative tasks (say: glue language), and lots of
gems add really useful functionality. It is a *real* PITA that
/var/lib/gems/1.8/bin is not in the default $PATH.

Please, fix this as soon as possible.

[Bug 178015] Kernel upgrade changes root= boot parameter to non-existing UUID

My root partition's vol_id is 926efc98-7e18-4599-9e26-71cbbdd853c7, and this
value was in menu.lst before the upgrade.

After the upgrade, the value in menu.lst (for both the "normal" boot
entry and the recovery mode) had changed to
52bb200c-f962-40a9-9200-bc1ce963210b. None of the partitions on this
laptop has this vol_id; i can only guess, but maybe some partition on
the test/packaging system for the kernel upgrade has a partition with
this vol_id.

I simply booted up using the Live CD, determined the correct(!) vol_id
for my root partition, manually mounted the boot partition and changed
/boot/grub/menu.lst accordingly.

Now, everything is back to normal.

I consider classifying this as a serious bug since it makes systems
unbootable.

[Bug 154104] Re: glxinfo: 'Direct rendering: no' on 915GM video chipset on Gutsy

2007-11-21 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
This problem still exists for me. I have a Samsung X20 with a mobile
915G integrated graphics controller.

Until about last week, compiz-fusion worked fine using the normal
xserver-xorg. After some updates (the "normal" ones coming out of the
standard repositories!), compiz-fusion stopped working and complains in
the following way:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ compiz --replace

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0

If I install XGL, compiz will work, but it is unbearingly slow - and it
wasn't that slow until last week. Plus, I have noticed that my GFX card
has no direct rendering any more:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

I would appreciate if someone could sort this out. If you need any
additional information, please do not hesitate to ask.

[Bug 18645] Re: apt does not handle HTTP redirects

2007-11-01 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Hi,
I think the "mirror" method Michael Vogt described above is useful in many
situation. In other situations, it would be highly preferable to simply have
apt honor 3xx status codes and follow redirects. I can see no reason why this
should be either hard or insecure. Speaking of security, as long as the
packages are signed, the signatures are valid and the keys used for the
signatures can be trusted: What are the implications here?

I would like the maintainers of apt/aptitude to reconsider implementing
redirection in apt/aptitude.

Thanks!

[Bug 124868] Abort after agreeing to continue.

2007-07-09 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

When I wanted to update my box today, I came across the following
somewhat strange behavior of apt-get:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Calculating upgrade... Done

Need to get 15.0MB of archives.
After unpacking 442kB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
Abort.

A further "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" proceeded without failure, so this
problem is non-deterministic. Since a repeat of the command leads to the
desired outcome, I would not rate this problem as important or even
critical; still, it is a nuisance if it happens and might confuse
especially new converts.

[Bug 122563] Re: The alternate install CD creates a /boot partition with only 32 inodes

2007-06-27 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
I just checked the one machine on which the kernel upgrade went
smoothly. The partition table there is

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 16 128488+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 17 138 979965 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3 139972977039707+ fd Linux raid autodetect

Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 16 128488+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdb2 17 138 979965 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb3 139972977039707+ fd Linux raid autodetect

The RAID setup is the same: md0 (sda1 and sdb1 mirrored) and md1 (sda3
and sdb3 striped).

The interesting part is the number of inodes on the ext2 file system on
md0:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo e2fsck /dev/md0
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
boot: clean, 36/128 files, 6514/32096 blocks

So, in this case, partman decided to create 128 inodes, on the same
hardware, using the same partition scheme. Odd. :-D

[Bug 122563] The alternate install CD creates a /boot partition with only 32 inodes

2007-06-27 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu 7.04 »Feisty Fawn« using the Alternate Install CD
since I needed the RAID capabilities provided by it. The machine I
installed has two 80GiB SATA drives. Since I use XFS for /, I needed a
separate /boot-partition because GRUB cannot read XFS file systems.

The partition tables are as follows:

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 16 128488+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 17 138 979965 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3 139972977039707+ fd Linux raid autodetect

Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 16 128488+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sdb2 17 138 979965 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb3 139972977039707+ fd Linux raid autodetect

I created two RAID devices: md0 (/dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 mirrored) and
md1 (/dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 mirrored). md1 is for / and md0 is for
/boot. I choose ext2 for /boot and XFS for /. Installation of Kubuntu
went fine.

Two days ago I tried to update the kernel to the newest version offered
by the repository. I persistently got the following error:

dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20-16.29_i386.deb
(--unpack):
unable to create `./boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-16-generic': No space left on device

This is very odd because there is *lots* of free space on the
partitions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md1 147G 2.0G 145G 2% /
varrun506M 104K 506M 1% /var/run
varlock 506M 0 506M 0% /var/lock
procbususb506M 108K 506M 1% /proc/bus/usb
udev 506M 108K 506M 1% /dev
devshm506M 0 506M 0% /dev/shm
lrm 506M 33M 473M 7%
/lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/volatile
/dev/md0 126M 16M 109M 13% /boot

The solution is quite simple: partman created the ext2 file system on
/dev/md0 with only 32 inodes:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/$ sudo e2fsck /dev/md0
e2fsck 1.40-WIP (14-Nov-2006)
boot: clean, 32/32 files, 4109/32096 blocks

This means that this partition can only hold 32 files (directories,
links, ...) which is obviously not enough to have grub and more than one
kernel on this partition.

I think this behavior of partman is quite odd and should be corrected.

To add some more oddness, this error(?) occurred on two machines with an
identical hardware-setup and partition scheme, while a third machine
with the same hardware and identical partition scheme had no problems
upgrading to the new kernel; on this machine, the /boot partition was
created with more inodes.

Please have a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=484030
where I originally posted the problem and its solution. Please do not
hesitate to contact me if you need any more information.

[Bug 53162] Please consider including the VDA patch

2006-07-16 Thread Martin Eisenhardt
Public bug reported:

Hello,

please consider including the VDA patch (http://web.onda.com.br/nadal/)
in the standard Ubuntu postfix package. It enables setting per-user
mailbox quotas, and I cannot see a reason that prevents it from being
included in the standard package. If there is such a reason, I would be
eager to learn it.

Thanks in advance!

Regards
Martin Eisenhardt
