[Bug 243020] [NEW] plucker-build accepts too-long database name w/o complaint

2008-06-25 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plucker

This command creates a Plucker document that is too long to actually use
with the Palm Plucker reader.

$ plucker-build -f "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" -H
http://virtualschool.edu/mon/Quality/PirsigZen/

On the Palm, Plucker will ignore the document entirely, not showing it
in the document list. FileZ, a popular Palm file manager, will error
trying to move the database to internal storage.

Per http://www.axios.de/palm/palm_dev_pdb.html maximum database name
size is 31 characters (32 bytes, null-terminated string.)

[Bug 267733] Re: update-manager layout does not leave adequate room for package short descriptions

2008-10-05 Thread Matt Behrens
Happened again today.

- Opened update-manager, one update was available (splix). Vertical spacing
was OK.
- Ran 'Check' to see if there was anything else. 8 more packages showed, all
linux 2.6.27-5 stuff, but they were compressed vertically in the list.
  - When they were compressed, all nine could fit without scrolling.
  - One of the descriptions overran the right side of the update box.
- Closed and reopened update-manager. The update list once again had correct
vertical spacing.

Don't know if the screenshot is useful or not, but here it is anyway.

[Bug 271753] [NEW] please install VBoxHeadless

2008-09-18 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Thank you for the 2.0.2 virtualbox packages in intrepid.

I'd like to see the VBoxHeadless front-end installed as well for use
with headless VMs. In http://bugs.debian.org/486544, this was added to
the Debian 1.6.2 packages. I don't remember if it was in the 1.6.2
packages I had prior to the latest update in intrepid, but I do have a
desire for it now.

This is apparently in the OSE; it just has the non-free RDP support
stripped out.

[Bug 275798] [NEW] finch complains if dbus not installed

2008-09-29 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: finch

I installed finch on jeos
. When
trying to run it, the following message corrupts its display:

process 30393: D-Bus library appears to be incorrectly set up; failed to read
machine uuid: Failed to open "/var/lib/dbus/machine-id": No such file or
directory
See the manual page for dbus-uuidgen to correct this issue.

The following message then appears every few seconds:

libnm_glib_dbus_init: error, org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound raised:
Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or
directory

All of the above messages appear on stderr so they can be silenced with
finch 2>/dev/null

Installing the dbus package reduces the problem to single message on
startup that does not corrupt its display:

libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error.
  (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name
org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

[Bug 263651] [NEW] Thunderbird renders fonts too small w/o dpi pref set

2008-09-01 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

With a fresh install of intrepid circa alpha-4, I changed the GNOME DPI
to 72 dpi (since I have a 1024x768 LCD panel and can't abide the wasted
screen space), font rendering to subpixel, and left hinting at slight.

Thunderbird renders all its fonts much smaller than any other
application, including Firefox. They're nearly unreadable.

I found adding user_pref("layout.css.dpi", 0); to thunderbird's prefs.js
is a viable workaround for this issue, thanks to a discussion at
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-437727.html

Updates as of today have not corrected this issue. If I remove the pref
the font rendering returns to tiny.

Shouldn't the -71 and -96 legacy drivers be made incompatible on a

Something like Requires a version before whatever version the ABI change

[Bug 267733] [NEW] update-manager layout does not leave adequate room for package short descriptions

2008-09-08 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

See attached screenshot. The problem seems to be that not enough
vertical space is given for each update, so the short description gets
cut off.

I think this started with the 1:0.93.7 update, but I can't say for sure.
I have fonts rendering at 72 dpi (set in Appearance -> Fonts -> Details)
because I have a lowly 1024x768 screen, this might impact this.

When I first updated, the layout looked similar to what you see no
matter what I did. To troubleshoot, I set my dpi back to 96, which
expanded the window and corrected the problem. Switching back to 72 dpi
seemed to correct the layout problem.

Now, when I first fire up Update Manager, the layout is correct.
However, after I ran "Check" today, the layout switched to what you see
in the attached screenshot.

[Bug 1058303] Re: linux-image-3.2.0-31-generic-pae radeon regression

2012-10-19 Thread Matt Behrens
I believe I have this issue with my AO722 on quantal, though my symptoms
are a little different as I have a cryptsetup root, so I never get to
the passphrase prompt. I do typically get a black screen on first boot,
but can ctrl-alt-del, and boot proceeds normally the second time
through.

My question is this: the test kernels henrix posted are 3.2 series.
quantal's on 3.5. Can I use these safely? Or should I expect quantal
to have this fix integrated?

Thanks. I did try it and it didn't do anything for my symptoms,

The comments in this bug did prompt me, however, to try blindly typing

with that, once X starts, the display works...

[Bug 421673] Re: modem-manager tries to probe, crashes PalmOS handhelds

2009-10-13 Thread Matt Behrens
Man, it's been ages since I've used minicom. :)

I cleared the init and reset strings from the config first, left all
other settings at default. In turn, I tested both ttyUSB0 (which is the
HotSync port) and ttyUSB1. I believe the latter is used for serial
applications... it might possibly not be open unless an app on the Palm
opens it? I am not really sure.

ttyUSB0: nothing happened. I typed each of the commands you listed
above. Nothing echoed, the LifeDrive didn't blink.

ttyUSB1: opening minicom did nothing, but the first stroke of "A"
crashed the Palm.

[Bug 148560] Re: installer hangs with encryption and random password

2007-10-19 Thread Matt Behrens
I can confirm this using the 7.10 release as well.

If you hop over to a terminal and do a ps -ef it looks like the hanging
process is

/bin/sh -e /lib/partman/init.d/35dump

It looks like a viable workaround is to leave space for encrypted swap
and set it up after the installation--though I have not actually
finished this yet.

Yeah, I don't know which devices do and don't work offhand, but I do

amd64-specific bug; I'm seeing it on my Atom netbook.

[Bug 715401] [NEW] manual partitioner runs offscreen on 1024×600 netbook

2011-02-08 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Using the natty alpha2 ISO, was trying to install onto an Asus Eee PC
1000HE.

Seemed to be working OK but I went into the manual partitioner to set up
btrfs and the bottom of the window is cut off—right below the dropdown
to select where to install GRUB to—and there was no way to relocate the
window so I could see the bottom.

Based on how many times I could Tab before the highlight cycled around
to the top of the window there were many controls cut off.

A possible fix might be the ability to set the system dpi to 72 (or to
do this automatically if screen height is 600 or less.) I typically run
this system that way with maverick and this allows many dialogs to
display their full contents in a more screen-size-appropriate manner.

[Bug 421673] Re: modem-manager tries to probe, crashes PalmOS handhelds and makes other serial devices unusable

2010-11-21 Thread Matt Behrens
@PascalCavy: unfortunately, libusb (a.k.a. PILOTPORT=usb:) is not an
option for all devices. I did just try it again, and was not able to
start a sync. LifeDrive in particular was unsupported in libusb mode by
pilot-link a few years ago, and I believe other Palms had similar
issues:

http://lists.pilot-link.org/pipermail/pilot-link-
general/2008-May/003364.html

Given your experience, and the fact that modemmanager is no longer
crashing my LifeDrive on maverick, maybe libusb devices may still
present an issue if the visor module is inserted?

[Bug 573140] [NEW] invoking gvim from shell results in invisible cursor, blank document areas

2010-05-01 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim

Just discovered this one in the past few weeks.

My typical usage pattern with vim is to have a gnome-terminal window
open and issue 'gvim filename' at the shell. (I'm using vim-gnome.)

Now, when I do this, I get a gvim window with an invisible cursor, and
if I scroll down in the document, blank space.

A workaround is to press Ctrl-Z, which minimizes gvim, then Alt-Tab back
over to it. The cursor then appears and all text is drawn correctly for
the rest of the session.

If I use Alt-F2 to launch gvim from Run Application, or if I select it
from the GNOME menu, there is no problem.

I do not need to use a filename argument to reproduce the problem.
Simply issuing 'gvim' at the shell is sufficient.

In case my .vimrc is useful, it contains:

filetype plugin indent on
set modeline
set gfn=Liberation\ Mono\ 10
au GUIEnter * set lines=50 columns=80

however, it has not changed since January 10—probably even before that;
that's just its mod time.

[Bug 769650] [NEW] dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME)

2011-04-23 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

On my Asus 1000HE netbook, adding a second monitor using the Monitors
panel makes Unity run unusably slowly. I speculate this is because it
seems to be running entirely in software.

[Bug 769690] [NEW] panel, logo button on different heads in dual-head setup

2011-04-23 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity-2d

Switched to Unity 2D from Unity 3D to try to solve the problem of slow
performance in dual-head mode. Was using 3D on a monitor connected to
my Asus 1000HE's VGA port. Once 2D was running, added back the
netbook's LCD panel.

The Unity panel is now on the LCD panel (my leftmost display), but the
Ubuntu logo button is on the external monitor (rightmost display). The
panel is in the proper place, but the button should be directly above it
on the leftmost display.

[Bug 769866] [NEW] tab completion no longer escapes filenames

2011-04-24 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

In maverick, lucid, and other even way older releases, I could use tab
completion on a filename with characters with special meaning to the
shell (e.g. spaces):

matt@lemmankinan:/tmp/complete-test$ ls
File with spaces.txt
matt@lemmankinan:/tmp/complete-test$ mv File\ with\ spaces.txt ..
(on second line, type "mv F .."

However, in natty, this is broken for many (though strangely not all)
commands:

matt@sampo:/tmp/complete-test$ ls
File with spaces.txt
matt@sampo:/tmp/complete-test$ mv File with spaces.txt ..
mv: cannot stat `File': No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat `with': No such file or directory
mv: cannot stat `spaces.txt': No such file or directory
(again, typing "mv F .."

If I start with a quote, e.g. "mv 'F .." that will work.

There's also an additional problem with directory names. If I e.g.
mkdir -p abc/def/ghi and try to move the above file, if I tab-complete
the "abc" directory, it will end with a space instead of a slash, so I
cannot complete further directories. Again, this works just fine in
older releases.

Despite bug 769866 looking inexplicably fixed today, this is still not

[Bug 769650] Re: dual monitor runs unusably slow (Asus 1000HE, Intel 945GME)

2011-04-26 Thread Matt Behrens
Disclaimer: incomplete understanding follows :-)

I seem to recall that, in past versions (lucid and maverick at least),
if you expanded your desktop, desktop effects would be switched off for
that session, probably by replacing compiz with metacity? Shadows and
desktop effects did go away.

This seems to me to be fallout from the compiz requirement for unity (is
it possible to switch to unity-2d on the fly like this?) The Ubuntu
Classic behavior reported in comment 3 sounds like a potential
regression to me, though.

[Bug 573140] Re: invoking gvim from shell results in invisible cursor, blank document areas

2010-05-05 Thread Matt Behrens
Removing the last line,

au GUIEnter * set lines=50 columns=80

works around this problem.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that a 50-line gvim window won't
necessarily fit on my netbook screen; the window is necessarily
downsized to 40 lines.

[Bug 427092] Re: hotsyncing lots of data from PalmOS device hangs system

2010-03-14 Thread Matt Behrens
This *appears* to be fixed in lucid (2.6.32-16).

I was shocked to find it completed when I tried it today, so I tried it
four more times (using pilot-xfer -b each time to pull a complete new
backup), and had no system problems.

No longer seeing "visor ttyUSB0: visor_unthrottle - failed submitting
read urb, error -22" in the dmesg either.

[Bug 560376] Re: [i945gm] Random X hang

2010-05-13 Thread Matt Behrens
This seems very similar to the bug I'm experiencing, on an Asus Eee PC
1000HE, with 945GME.

I can get out of it with magic SysRq R-E.

If it is, in fact, the same, we can at least drop the amd64 tag.

[Bug 263651] Re: Thunderbird renders fonts too small w/o dpi pref set

2009-05-10 Thread Matt Behrens
Hi timor,

The user_pref still works for me. I just added it to my prefs.js on a

Are you adding it to the prefs.js in $HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird? That's
where it's supposed to go.

Ah, OK, must have been a blip. You don't need to test it without the
pref, I wouldn't think; I saw the problem on this new system here, which
is why I added the pref.

[Bug 503579] [NEW] [lucid] software-center warns of untrusted packages, offers no "Cancel"

2010-01-05 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I was using software-center to install GnuCash on my lucid installation.
With 18-hour-old package lists, I was greeted 3% in (past "loading
software list", IIRC) with a dialog informing me a number of untrusted
packages would need to be installed. The only choice was "OK". Once
clicking "OK" I could then cancel the installation.

There were no options to update the software ilst, nor any hints that
updating the software list was the right thing to do. This seems like
it would be a *very* scary dialog.

I used update-manager to update the package lists (and installed some
updates while I was at it), and GnuCash now installs successfully.

[Bug 481489] Re: karmic doesn't consistently respond to USB devices connected

2010-01-01 Thread Matt Behrens
dcam,

I am wondering if this is similar to problems I have had in karmic.
Often, I could get them to work by doing a modprobe of the relevant
module.

i.e. if my USB mouse wasn't working, I could press Alt-F2 and type
gksudo modprobe usbhid

or if a USB Flash drive, Alt-F2 gksudo modprobe usb-storage

Do either of the above work for you in their respective situations?

[Bug 502146] [NEW] duplicate private messages from IRC users

2010-01-01 Thread Matt Behrens
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: telepathy-idle

This might be related to the fact that I have two IRC accounts set up in
empathy, but I have been getting duplicate and out-of-order messages
from NickServ (NickServ exists on both servers) and other users of IRC
servers (who do not exist on both servers) since I started testing
lucid.

Not sure if this is telepathy-idle's fault specifically, but my AIM
contacts seem not to exhibit this behavior, nor do the IRC chat rooms
themselves.

Example from NickServ when signing on to two servers:

- Friday January 01 2010, 14:38 -
NickServ: This nickname is owned by someone else
NickServ: If this is your nickname, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY
NickServ: This nickname is owned by someone else
NickServ: If this is your nickname, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY
NickServ: This nickname is owned by someone else
NickServ: If this is your nickname, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY
NickServ: This nickname is owned by someone else

and in another tab:

- Friday January 01 2010, 14:38 -
NickServ: This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your
NickServ: nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
NickServ: please choose a different nick.
NickServ: If you do not change within one minute, I will change your nick.
NickServ: Password accepted - you are now recognized.
NickServ: Password accepted - you are now recognized.
NickServ: If you do not change within one minute, I will change your nick.
NickServ: please choose a different nick.
NickServ: nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
NickServ: This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your

Of particular note on the second tab: the "If you do not change within
one minute" messages are only present on one of the two servers I use.

This might be related to bug #388504, possibly. However, I have not
seen anyone mislabelled.

[Bug 492392] Re: [lucid, intel] After suspend, flickering screen and then blank screen.

2010-01-03 Thread Matt Behrens
I'm not sure if this is productive or not, but I've been trying to
recompile the i915 drm module with changes from the kernel bug, using
Martin Pitt's procedure at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild#line-10, plus an update-
initramfs because I was under the impression that was necessary these
days...

It hasn't been working; still getting the flickering on my Eee PC
1000HEB. I will try the powersave workaround next.

If someone with knowledge of this area would be willing to guide me, I'm
willing to try a number of things to get this one fixed. It's pretty
much all that's wrong with lucid for me right now.

[Bug 296814] Re: Presario R3000 hang during boot with device connected to USB 2.0 port

2009-01-11 Thread Matt Behrens
Here is a newer dmesg with the hang point noted.

It should also be noted that I have found that pulling the mouse
receiver does not always unstick the boot; lately I have found that in a
majority of (but not all) cases, simply waiting it out will cause the
system to resume booting, though the timestamps in the dmesg do not
indicate any sort of delay has happened.

I wonder, would it be productive to actually time this interval with a
stopwatch or similar? Perhaps to identify if there's a timeout
somewhere that eventually gets the boot moving again?

[Bug 226242] Re: hardy pidgin crashes with "corrupted double-linked list", "double free or corruption (fasttop)"

2008-05-03 Thread Matt Behrens
I just discovered that I've had hardy-proposed in my sources since I was
testing other fixes last week. Will hardy-proposed auto-update? If so,
there might be some blame here.

[Bug 226242] Re: hardy pidgin crashes with "corrupted double-linked list", "double free or corruption (fasttop)"

2008-05-03 Thread Matt Behrens
This crash occurred when I inadvertently upgraded to 2.6.24-17 via
hardy-proposed. If I go back to 2.6.24-16 I do not have this crash.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: pidgin => linux

[Bug 226242] Re: hardy pidgin crashes with "corrupted double-linked list", "double free or corruption (fasttop)"

2008-05-03 Thread Matt Behrens
Sorry, this is occurring under 2.6.24-16 as well. I didn't test
thoroughly enough. Sorry about the noise.

[Bug 226242] Re: hardy pidgin crashes when using SOCKS proxy

2008-05-06 Thread Matt Behrens
Ah! I had been experimenting with SOCKS support. If I switch 'Network
Proxy' back to 'Direct' then I no longer have the crash.

I'd say this is confirmed.

** Summary changed:

- hardy pidgin crashes with "corrupted double-linked list", "double free or
corruption (fasttop)"
+ hardy pidgin crashes when using SOCKS proxy

** Changed in: pidgin (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

[Bug 208666] Re: audacious crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2008-04-24 Thread Matt Behrens
Debian had this problem as well. It looks like a binary rebuild can fix
the problem.

[Bug 208666] Re: audacious crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2008-04-25 Thread Matt Behrens
@StefanPotyra, I have not confirmed that this indeed works. Just
passing on the info. I am sort of short on time to get the build
environment up and running etc.

[Bug 153521] Re: fonts are blurred with subpixel rendering

2008-04-25 Thread Matt Behrens
"- why would the current settings be a source of eye strain?"

On a new gutsy install (now hardy), they definitely made my eyes/head
hurt before I tried 'best shapes'. Eventually I xmag'd and found the
fringing was a problem.

I've had similar trouble with ClearType on Windows, which fringes
characters in much the same way. You can tune it down but it never
really fully goes away.

It seems pretty clear to me why it's painful: it's effectively blurring
parts of characters that should be sharp.

I am currently using Johan's workaround with success.
