Dimitrios, help me understand something here if you will. I've been using Linux exclusively at home for almost 6 yr now. I've just migrated a US Atate Agency over to a full Linux Backend using Ubuntu with Winblows desktops and that may change yet. My understanding is that X is merely a service or layer that facilitates the GUI. This makes sense. Why would it do anything else since the majority of Linux apps make backend calls through libraries etc for functions IE; Xine or Mplayer etc. Dolphin with copy, paste or any other basic file operations. If I close the GUI and go full CLI, I should be able (and am able to ) access a USB drive for example or remote file system or see through LSUSB or LSPCI a plugged in device. So my confusion to all this is why would X have separate entries to enable Hot-Pluggable devices which should normally be available without it? Is this because of KDE4? Thanks and any clarification would be greatly appreciated. [Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Vincent, the HP Pavilion laptops don't offer an option to disable legacy USB in the BIOS. I'm sure there are others (models, brands etc) that are the same. This would be a problem. My issue has since gone away with the Sunday AM updates to KDE4. Even the tray icons no longer fade away after a few minutes. My question or thoughts are surrounding the nVidia chips or KDE4 now. Nick posted above that his was faulty only under X and since most of us with this issue are running nVidia chipsets. My install was a fresh Kubuntu 8.10 install. Then I ran the updates (no kernel update) with no issues. After a reboot, updated the kernel. USB issue started. Reboot - no mouse, install nVidia driver - reboot, mouse worked but stopped working after a few minutes. Reboot, no change. I left the system alone except to boot into the 2.6.27-4 kernel which provided full functionality. On Sunday I read Dimitrios's request and responded accordingly. Few hours later I installed the updates that were available Sunday morning. I've had no issues since these updates were applied. They were mostly KDE4 updates. I see where Gnome users (assuming here) are also affected which I know makes my pointing to KDE4 void. For some reason, the HP Pavilion laptop model has suffered the most under Linux regardless of distro and version compared to other makes/models. Unsure why but that's not for here. -- 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 281737] Re: 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Here's the text of this output. Could this be tied to the nVidia driver considering the hardware is nVidia? I also noticed that this morning's updates really foobar'd the system. I have yet to update the kernel but my USB quit working after I installed Samba. Updated caused an automated reboot with a crash handler for the video being sent. Reboot, same t-shooting I did before etc and it's really bad like toast. [Bug 281737] [NEW] 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch) Release:8.10 After upgrade to 2.6.27-7 kernel in Kubuntu 8.10, unable to use USB devices or ports. T-shooting steps: Fresh install; Perform System update; no tweaks, boot into 2.6.27-7 kernel = no USB; unplug and replug devices = no-go; reboot to 2.6.27-4 kernel = USB devices work fine, no issues. System - HP Pavilion Dv9000z series laptop. Unable to use any USB device or ports after this kernel upgrade/update. Reboot into the 2.6.27-4 kernel and USB functionality works fine. This appears to be a repeat of the updates for 7.10 and 8.04 during similar stages. As discovered during that time, it appeared that one of the upstream kernel developers was messing with some experimental USB settings in the kernel and forgot to revert his changes before the final compilation and subsequent distribution. This had widespread impact to most name brand laptops (Dell, HP, Acer, Gateway etc). This also created excessive CPU loads at idle creating overheating issues. The excessive CPU loads at this time are not present however. Please advise if you need anything else for me to submit. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- 2.6.27-7 kernel breaks USB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281737 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
