[Bug 1582958] Re: reboot-required.pkgs dose not clear after rebooting
I have the same problem. I will "fix" my system now by "making /var/run a symlink to /run." as Steve suggested. Unfortunately "Ubuntu" has not been doing that for me in my case. The two paths are separate directories. Only /run is a tmpfs. /var/run is on the root filesystem. [Bug 841116] Re: no color change when new messages arrive
Ok. I realize, this is not really a bug. Let me nevertheless (ab)use this platform to (1.) bring up one spontaneous idea about how the problem could be solved and (2.) state the reason why I perceive it as problem. 1. Why not use 2 or even more colors? blue for mails, green for irc, yellow for im's, etc... 1b. Another solution would probably be to NOT share the menu with real- time messaging clients. Let them have their own (removable) menu. I don't use any of them and I'm not very pleased that they seem to be getting in the way here. 1c. Alternatively, could you make that "if (..." line you quoted user- configurable, for example through another one or more thunderbird "about:config"-variables? (And could you document the variables ;-) ?) This would already fully address my issues. 2. The reason why, after recently upgrading from natty to oneiric, I have been a bit disappointed when the mail icon didn't "turn blue" on arrival of new messages, was that I (had to) "manually" (a)) set this up to work in natty and was hoping that it would work out of the box in oneiric. So my first impression upon upgrade was actually: "I can't believe that after so many years of free software being available on the desktop it seems still not possible to be notified about new mail." I consider this one of the most basic tasks that an operating system should do for me! a) With the help of a receipt build of xul-thunderbird-notify-something, deployed to my ppa. It worked great, and I should say "thanks a lot! great work!" to the launchpad architects, but it is still a bit a lot of work involved for a mere end-user like me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/841116 Title: no color change when new messages arrive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/messagingmenu-extension/+bug/841116/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 550054] Re: External Monitor not Sleeping with Laptop Lid Closed
In Ubuntu Natty (11.04), you can try this https://launchpad.net/~patrick2000/+archive/pathos/+sourcepub/1946736/+listing-archive-extra ppa https://launchpad.net/~patrick2000/+archive/pathos/+packages package, which fixes it for me. The problem, as I picked up somewhere, is that "xset dpms force on" / "xset dpms force off", which is ~ how gpm unblanks/blanks the screen, affects all attached screens. If the laptops built-in display is not turned off by the *hardware* (without help of gpm), gpm (I think :-)) turns it off via dpms when it is closed. Now if you blank the displays during idle time using dpms, they have to be unblanked at some time again. At that time, the internal display could now unintentionally be turned on as well (if it is not completeley turned of by the hardware anyway). I don't know how/if this is solved in oneiric. The opposite is the case: as a positive side-effect I can now resize firefox windows with the compiz resize plugin configured to "Normal" (show window content during resize) without the borders constantly flickering - which used to be a minor issue: lp 454218 additional info: installed video driver: Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeon Source: xserver-xorg-video-ati Version: 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu5 kernel: Package: linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic Architecture: amd64 Source: linux Version: 2.6.32-24.41 -- OpenGL graphic errors in google earth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570879 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 588551] Re: "Automatic" font color is now grey instead of black
Well: I'm using Ubuntu lucid - fresh install The default font color for documents in openoffice.org writer seems to depend on the system->preferences->appearance->["custom theme" selected]->customize...->colors>input boxes setting. I reset that to the default value now though because /input boxes/ (well... imho, on first thought at leaset) are defenetly something different than the openoffice.org writer's document area (where, ok, text is /input/, but it's not really a /box/). To set the font to black in openoffice.org, i went, in openoffice.org writer, to tools->options->openoffice.org->appearance->font color and changed "automatic" into "black". But I think this should either be the default or "automatic" should not pick "input box" but something that is by default black and relates better. -- "Automatic" font color is now grey instead of black https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588551 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 605551] Re: lvm2 hangs when creating snapshot, requires reboot to resolve
Well, i would have really liked to test some more kernels but i'm hopelessly distracted by learning make-kpkg, git, fiddling with make- kpkg --append-to-version, wondering why somehow there is still a "+" added when i compile a patched vanilla 2.6.35 which causes make-dpkg to fail. (It's because the tree is not in a clean state, there is no annotated (! - "git tag -a") git tag for the non-existant commit and therefore scripts/setlocalversion spits out the "+".) Anyway ... by now I figured out (1% of) how to use make-kpkg as well as git and managed to "git clone --reference linus git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git". $ cd linux-next $ git describe next-20100803 $ git diff v2.6.35 -- fs/ext4/super.c | grep FREEZE - vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_TRANS); - vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_TRANS); At the end of the day this (imho) means 2.6.25 as well as 2.6.32.17 are non-functional with respect to live ext4 lvm snapshots but there is a good chance that future 2.6.36 and 2.6.32.18 will be working again. cheers PS: for the reference, i did "git clone --reference linus git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.32.y.git" as well and $ cd linux-2.6.32.y $ git describe v2.6.32.17 $ git diff v2.6.32.16 -- fs/ext4/super.c | grep FREEZE + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); ... this means v2.6.32.16 should be ok as well PPS: $ cd linus (git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git) $ git diff v2.6.34 v2.6.35-rc1 -- fs/ext4/super.c | grep FREEZE + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); + vfs_check_frozen(sb, SB_FREEZE_WRITE); it looks like the change spoiling the current ubuntu 2.6.32-24-generic kernel came from change published by linus to an -rc tree only (despite it now having diffused to released 2.6.35 and 2.6.32.17 as well, sadly) ... why was that backported to the lucid kernel so early ? -- lvm2 hangs when creating snapshot, requires reboot to resolve https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605551 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 458116] [NEW] cups printer instances not usable from gtk applications
Public bug reported: This (http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2009-02/msg05856.html) bug on suse summarizes the problem. I have once filed a bug upstream (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=582747) which never got any attention. My suggested workaround in the upstream bug would at least prevent one bad effect the bug is having if you define cups "instances" in your /etc/cups/lpoptions or ~/.cups/lpoptions - either using old kde 3.5 print configuration dialog or "lpoptions" command line. Read the loptions man page to learn about cups "instances". They are really useful. If anybody knows an alternative I'd be happy to learn about it as well. Multiple "queues" (printers) for the same "device URL" are not an alternative, as at least /usr/share/system-config-printer /system-config-printer.py (System->Administration->Printing) doesn't seem to allow setting up multiple printers with the same device file due to a cups error (client-error-not-possible) occurring if you try (at least for the cnij_usb: backend I'm using). If the cups instances are here to stay and somebody gave me some tips on how to get my code accepted by upstream I'd maybe take some effort to implement instances in the gtk libprintbackend-cups library. But there is some other printing dialog efforts going on. E.g. "Common Printing Dialog" (https://wiki.edubuntu.org/CommonPrintingDialog) On this (https://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/OpenPrinting_Summit_San_Francisco_2009) page you find some nice slides (https://www.linuxfoundation.org/images/4/4d/CommonPrintingDialogLF09.pdf) about it. Does anybody know if there are any useable results from this project yet ?
