[Bug 1077342] [NEW] Feature of Powering off an external drive is no more!

2012-11-10 Thread hanynowsky
Public bug reported:

in 12.04 the utility (palimpsest / gnome-disk-utility / gnome-disks )
has a useful feature which is :

- Power Off Drive

So basically, if you have a NTFS external drive that you plug through USB, and
want to unplug it, you open the utilitu and
- unmount
- power off

then unplug.

Today, after upgrading to 12.10 (the new palimpsest), the utility got rid of
this feature. All we can do now is unmount the external drive.
Not powering off an external drive before unplugging it may be dangerous.

[Bug 1057186] Re: Modem Huawei E173 works in 12.04 but not in 12.10

2012-10-23 Thread hanynowsky
@Aleksander  the APN aliases (internet1.medital.ma & internet2.meditel.ma)
have nothing to do with connection failure as they are only aliases for the
same server address. Both of them succeed when using modemmanager 0.5 but both
of them fail when using modemmanager 0.6.
I already checked with them both but same results in the end.
So to summarize : my comments #28 #29 #30 #31 contain logs for modem version
0.5 ( The APN used was internet1.meditel.ma)

And what follows are new debug logs for version 0.6.0.0 with the same
APN : internet1.meditel.ma

Here is the output of apt-cache policy

2012-10-22 Thread hanynowsky
@Marius Signal quality is 48 in my place but it's fine. Relatively good
speed. I will try to grad debu ogs for 0.5 again and attach them right
away.

@mrequalizer yes it's working for me with 0.5. You can downgrade with no
problem. There is no 0.5 in quantal repos, so you have to download the 0.5
version packaged for precise (choose the one for your arch, i368 or amd64).
Just uninstall modemmanager (sudo apt-get remove modemmanager) and install the
download version (0.5). Reboot.

Re: [Bug 1057186] Re: Modem Huawei E173 works in 12.04 but not in 12.10

2012-10-08 Thread hanynowsky
Thans for the feedback.

I ve tried again and the problem remains (The machine has been updated 2
hours ago.). The usb_stick is switched to modem mode, broadband profile
appears in Network Manager applet, if I click on the profile in order to
get connected, network-manager starts searching for network but fails to do
so.
While in 12.04, it succeeds instantly.
With sakis3g utility, I also succeed instantly (notice sakis3g has an
embedded older version od usb_modeswitch package).
I still don't know if it's a modemmanager issue or a problem with the
network-manager or even the nm-applet, and there is nothing very useful in
the logs that helps me sport the problem.

I will generate again success logs from 12.04 tomorrow and compare them
with logs from 12.10 and attach them.

Same here! unity-webapps-gmail is installed. Firefox prompted me to install its

But never've heard or seen since then. It seems like a ghost webapp.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure unity-webapps-gmail

does not help.

Is there any way to get firefox prompt for gmail webapp instalation

[Bug 1056142] Re: "Show desktop" icon gone from launcher and from CCSM

2012-09-29 Thread hanynowsky
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 681348 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681348

This should not be a duplicate as it's a regression bug rather.
Bug #681348 was fixed and the Minimize All desktop Icon was added to the
launcher in Ubuntu 12.04 and redesigned in Ubuntu 12.10 (Alpha and BEta 1).

Now it disappeared. If not really a bug, then is it a new decision to take off
this feature for good and do with the emabarrassing:
CTRL+SUPER+D ?

Besides, after this same update Mounted Drives (ext4, NTFS.
partitions...) no more are sticked to the launcher and there is no way
to enable this back.

DEsktop Icon in Launcher is gone and there is no way to enable it back
in compizsettings. Mounted Drives no more are sticked to the launcher
and there is no way to enable this back.

[Bug 1058547] [NEW] Network manager does not fully recognize Broadband internet through sakis3G

2012-09-29 Thread hanynowsky
Public bug reported:

My Broadband usb Modem "Huawei E173s-1" which worked under Precise 12.04, does
not want to connect to internet in 12.10 (bug already reported).
Though, I succeeded in connecting to the internet using the binary: sakis3g:
--
sudo sakis3g --interactive
-
And follow GUI instructions.

Untill now all applications recognize this internet connection except EMPATHY &
Software Center & Gwibber. (Probably others)
When I try to use Software Center, it tells there is no Internet connection and
I am not able to install software from it.
Same thing for Empathy, it does not connect.

Indicators like indicator-weather or indictaor-dropbox connects just
fine.

[Bug 1057186] Re: Modem Huawei E173 works in 12.04 but not in 12.10

2012-09-27 Thread hanynowsky
I downloaded sakis3g and used it and was able to connect the modem :

wget http://www.sakis3g.org/versions/latest/$ARCH/sakis3g.gz # where $ARCH is
either i386 or amd64
gunzip sakis3g.gz
chmod +x sakis3g
./sakis3g --interactive

Then, I generated a success report from sakis3g :

-
Sakis3G version: 0.2.0e
Using embedded Usb-ModeSwitch version:

USBMODEM="12d1:1c05" OTHER="USBMODEM" MODEM="OTHER" DISPLAY=":0"
DESKTOP="Desktop" LOCALAUTHORITY="/tmp/libgksu-8T4iGa/.Xauthority"

Is is it related to the version of usb_modeswitch which is different
(1.1.3 vs 1.2.3) ? or kernel drivers changes (usbserial vs option) ?

I was also able to connect the modem by editing /etc/modules and
rebooting without unpluging the modem.

In a forum, a user (

issue and could issue a successful mode switch with this command:

sudo /usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -I -W -s 10 -c "/12d1:1446" -v
12d1 -p 1446

I did the same :
unzipping configPack in /usr/share/usb_modeswitch and type the command:

sudo /usr/sbin/usb_modeswitch -I -W -s 10 -c
"/usr/share/usb_modeswitch/configPack/12d1:1c0b" -v 12d1 -p 1c05

What do you mean by uid root? sudo -s ?

if I type : sudo modprobe -r usbserial

Then I get an error:

[Bug 1026737] Re: Libreoffice 3.5.3.2 is no more integrated to appmenu (Global menu)

2012-07-20 Thread hanynowsky
Thank you for the feedback
IT appears that lo-menubar package was uninstalled for some reason. I
re-installed it : sudo apt-get install lo-menubar
and integration to Global menu is back. Yet, it triggers another bug which is
Bug #974332 .

[Bug 974332] Re: Libreoffice prompts systematically to recover the last saved document

2012-07-20 Thread hanynowsky
this bug is likely to be caused by the package lo-menubar.

If I uninstall lo-menubar (integration of LO with global menu), the
recovery bug disappears. Once I re-install it, the bug is back.

deleting or emptying the file:
~/.config/libreoffice/3/user/registrymodifications.xcu does not help.

Re: [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread hanynowsky
That is what I did, long last month. I thought at first that the upgrade
from Ubuntu kernel 23 to 24 fixed the freezes I used to have (Hard freezes
that requires hard reboot); but I actually I recall I rest Unity before
updating the kernel back then:

unity --reset && compiz --replace && sudo lightdm restart

My system is a Dell XSP 15 L502X AMD 64bits.

[Bug 1009652] [NEW] Firefox 12 & 13 do not support Java applet under Ubuntu 12.04

2012-06-06 Thread hanynowsky
Public bug reported:

Reproduce:

- Open Firefox 12 or 13
- Go to : http://java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
- Normally a java applet should appear informing the user that Java is working.

Instead, the web browser hangs a while and freezes. Obliged then to
force quit.

I already enabled Java for firefox by removing ICEDTEA plugin and adding a
symbolic link to the correct plugin :
/usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
in ~/.mozilla/plugins
And typing about:plugins reveals that indeed Java is installed in Firefox.
I tried with all firefox extensions disabled but in vain.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

2012-05-31 Thread hanynowsky
As a recall:

It's been 6 days since I have not had the total freeze and this since
the moment I upgraded to : Linux 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May
21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel

My machine is a laptop : Sandy Bridge i7 amd64 (4 G of Ram) with
Integrated Graphics Intel HD 3000 (Machine used for heavy development,
so many browsers opened at the same time (Chrome, chromium, opera,
fox, midori), IDEs, office, and other considerable I/O apps and no
problem so far now).

Could someone other than Anthony PERRIN with the same specs confirm that
the problem was solved for him.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently

2012-05-28 Thread hanynowsky
I still did not install any other kernel, yet I encountered no freeze since 3
days ago and this since the moment I updated to (Build 39) :
3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 16:52:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux

What a weird bug.
The fact that Canonical is dead silent about this bug stipulates it's a deadly
bug none wants to get involved with.
I guess WAYLAND's arrival is needed. X is getting bloated and complicated to
handle.

[Bug 950160] Re: Keyboard function key to switch between monitors no more works

2012-05-24 Thread hanynowsky
Retried again.

The debugging command :  kill -9 `pgrep "gnome-settings"`;
gnome-settings-daemon --debug
made the patch work for Unity 3D temporarily. I had a similar output as in
comment #22 (xrandr Identified monitors...etc) and the monitor switch also
worked.
After logout/login, the patch is no more effective for Unity 3D. I also noticed
that there was a second instance of compiz running with a huge memory
consumption (if the debugging command is triggered).

Case 2 : The patch work fine in Unity 2D. (Fn+F1) and (Super + P) do
work fine.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-16 Thread hanynowsky
I noticed that using Chrome/Chromium along simultaneously with Firefox triggers
the bug immediately or only 3 or 4 minutes later.
The Freeze occured frequently when I was interacting with Flash/HTML5 resources
in Chrome/Chromium.
I had this Freeze about 15 times now. COMPLETE FREEZE.

I doubt it's Xorg or Compiz. Sounds like a Kernel/Unity communication issue to
me.
Someone above reported that the issue is also present on Mint Linux and Debian.
True?

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently

2012-05-13 Thread hanynowsky
I suffer the same fatal bug ( yes, Since it's been UDS these last week, the bug
might have passed unseen?).
A fatal bug that prevents even the advanced and experts from using Ubuntu 12.04
LTS as a Production machine and home desktop OS.
In my case, the system freezes completely with no ability to access console
mode. Every few hours.
My machine is a Dell XPS 15 L502X AMD64 (i7 Sandy Bridge - with Intel HD 3000 &
Nvidia GT525m).
Hard shutdown can be fatal for the HDD and the whole system. This can be enough
to mark the bug as being CRITICAL.

Nothing in the log file that indicates a reason for this bug.

[Bug 904476] Re: HDMI wired to Nvidia does not work in a Nvidia Optimus Enabled Laptop

2012-04-30 Thread hanynowsky
Unfortunately, in a hybrid graphics laptop, enabling the HDMI through
Xork, means blacklisting Intel graphics driver, which is not feasable!

The one solution for certification imho is to add Nvidia HDMI support through
Bumblebee 3.1 which might likely become a default official package in Ubuntu.
Isn't it possible?

[Bug 981335] Re: gsetting to enable or disable grid no longer works for users

2012-04-13 Thread hanynowsky
Thanks for opening this Bug @Doug !
Just to confirm that whatever the user, the Grid wouldn't get disabled through
: com/canonical/unity-greeter (uncheck box).

I have three users, me (default user), samba user and guest. Whatever
the user I point to on lightdm greeter, the grid is there!

Can someone give a shortcut on where VLC indicator icon is hard coded in the
source code!? Thanks.
Alternatively, is there any possibility of disabling VLC indicator menu?

[Bug 837401] Re: Dash: No blur option should use an opaque or translucent lens

2012-04-12 Thread hanynowsky
Well for me it looks bad!
I really would like to set the transparency of the unity panel as I can set it
now when Dash is on No Blur. Yet I need to keep the dash look like it is under
Active or Static blur.

2012-04-11 Thread hanynowsky

Seems to me that gksudo nautilus /somepath triggers the bug.
|-|

In the screencast you can see that I open a folder using gksudo, copy a
file and paste it on desktop. The Paste menu item is grayed but not
action-disabled. Same for Resize Icon and Restore Icon's original size.
