Xubuntu here, wireless has been working fine over multi distros and years on this machine, just ran the 15.04 upgrade last night. [Bug 1373930] [NEW] apt-key fails silently
Public bug reported: The apt-key command just returns to the command prompt with no output. I am sure it's failing or crashing silently. The scenario is that I am getting the pgdg-keyring /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) issue. Following the instructions in a forum posting I moved all the files from /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d and re-ran apt-get update. This reported several unverified keys. I then started adding the keys by running apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys foo and noticed there was no output and it returned to the command prompt too quickly. Also no keys were added. Unfortunately moving all the .gpg files back into /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d has left me with three unverified keys; http://apt.postgresql.org and two for http://ppa.launchpad.net. apt.postgresql seemed to be the key that was causing the original pgdg- keyring, but this could also be because it was the first in the list and all the others would also fail. [Bug 1352886] [NEW] Resume from suspend fails after a long sleep
Public bug reported: I'm on Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 with the standard 13.13.0-32 kernel. The Suspend feature works, if the sleep is for a short time. For longer duration's, shortest I've seen is 90 minutes, the machine will not resume. When I say not resume, I mean the chassis fan LED will flash once and nothing powers up. Due to the time, it is very difficult to debug. From now on I am going to put the machine to sleep with the 'pm_trace' feature. Hopefully it will provide some useful feedback. I have not attempted to hibernate for a length of time, though I presume it to have the same problem. In addition to this problem, after a failed resume, the reset button and holding the power button does not work. I have to physically cut the power. Also, I installed the latest kernel, v3.16-rc7, but after logging on I had no Desktop (only the wallpaper) and the keyboard did nothing. Being new to linux I'm not sure how to do anything in text mode. I don't have the time to step back through each version. If somebody knows which version may work I can give it a try. I also tried installing the 14.10 Desktop, but that version consumed so much CPU it took 60 seconds to open a window and a full 20 minutes to shut down. The Live version also behaved this way but I went ahead and installed it anyway. A few notes about my system: Radeon HD6790 GPU. Problem Exists with both of their available drivers (this includes their beta driver stated as being 14.04 friendly). I cannot use the Ubuntu driver as the GPU fan runs at full speed and slows the system down. ASUS M4A78LT-LE mainboard, with latest 3.01 BIOS. 2 Kingston 4GB DDR3 modules. I'm happy to perform a test and run any utilities, but like I said, I don't have the time to be downloading/installing version after version to find something that might work. The most recent pre-releases have not worked. A bit more digging into it. ./init /dev/serio_raw0 shows the device recognising all input fine for all five fingers. @Mathias I had the touchpad working with psmouse.proto=bare previously. If I add i8042.noloop=1 psmouse.proto=bare then it works as a ps2 mouse while registering as the focaltech device. : dmesg is attached, snipped to the first few occurences of Failed to enable mouse. Traced it down to a hardware problem. There was dirt between the key's rubber padding and the main board. My point still stands however. The point I was raising wasn't that I was using BIOS or EFI but rather the installation progressed through the entire process and then left the system unbootable! Noah, What usually happens is that an ISP sets up a site for a client and loads the default docs. They then tell the client that their site is available. The client goes to their site and sees the apache logo and assumes that ASF has hijacked their site. I was around the last time an irate but technically inept web-user decided Apache had "stolen" his website and it was not pleasant - he spammed the lists for weeks until we had to get his ISP to unplug him... Before proceeding further, I would urge you to do two things: 1) Search in the mailing list archives for the previous (and lengthy) discussions that took place on this very issue a few years ago (get the date when the page was changed to the current terse version from CVS and then search back from then in the archives). Read the thread and then reflect if this is still a good idea. 2) If you still think it's necessary to change it, compose a text that you'd like to see. It will have to avoid the pitfall that inexperienced web users will think that the ASF has "hijacked" their website. BTW, note that said users cannot be assumed to understand, or even read, anything that appears on the page. IN IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced then check "show friendly HTTP error messages". Then go to http://httpd.apache.org/wibble and you will see a client-generated page (ie, not the error_404.html page from apache). This is a well-known feature of IE and I'm a little uneasy that you're not aware of it... Did you do the research I suggested above? The trouble is that it's possible to run a configuration of IE that does not display the 404 sent from the server. That's what Soren is talking about... Public bug reported: Forced to hard reset by a strange system lockup, resulting in corruption of my ext4 root partition. System would crash on boot, any attempt to mount or fix the file system using the recover boot menu option or the 10.04.1 livecd also crashed. Eventually got a SystemRescueCd linux cd to boot and ran fsck which fixed the corruption in a matter of seconds and was able to boot ubuntu again with no problems, no freezing or fs corruption since. Even if I upgrade to the latest upstream kernel I am disinclined to deliberately attempt to corrupt my file system to duplicate this. If you have any suggestions as to how I can test the issue on the new kernel without putting my data at risk I'm happy to do so but the only way I can think of is deliberately hard-resetting until something goes wrong, kind of like russian roulette. This bug actually highlights two issues, first: ext4-fs crashing on mount, and second: shouldn't there be a way to boot and run fsck without the system mounting all the file systems first? I had the same problem on my 10.4 AMD64 install (update from 9.10). I can confirm that removing the DVD before booting from cold fixes the problem for me.I no longer see power manager screen and get quicker boot. Here is what I think is going on. The boot sequence has become increasingly more parallel in the last few releases. When we see the login screen - X is up and running but things are still booting in the background. If you have a few devices that are unusually slow (e.g. DVD or USB) and you log in quickly your computer still has a fair bit more to do before you get to your desktop. Sure, the Power Manager screen shouldn't show up the way it does. That's a bug. But as others have said, it does disappear on its own if you leave it 10 seconds. But the fix may simple be to hide that screen. To add a little support to my case. If I do the following: 1) Boot with DVD 2) Log in appears, don't log in yet 3) After 5 seconds the DVD spins up (for the second time, it has already spun up once in the boot process) 4) After another 10 seconds the DVD stops 5) Now login 6) There is no power manager screen and login to desktop time is very quick. It sounds like others are having problems with slow initialising of USB peripherals. My personal opinion is that these slow inits are longer than expected and the boot sequence hasn't been coded for this eventuality. [Bug 1916852] [NEW] Update bails leaving system in a corrupted state
Public bug reported: I ran a do-release-upgrade and all seemed to run ok until it hit some kind of error at which point it exited saying the system had been returned to its original state. Unfortunately it hadn't. I carried on working, thought nothing more about the error, assuming the system was as it was before, until I rebooted. The system booted, launched X, sddm and the login screen. However, the login screen was a mess, no icons and black text in black boxes. I logged in and the desktop was the same, actually worse. I dropped in to the terminal to discover there were 3,500 package updates. The /etc/apt/ directory had been overwritten with entries for hirsute. Some packages must have already been updated to break the DM so badly. Attempting to run the updates showed there was one new package that conflicted with a new one. The old package uninstalled with no dependencies and no issues. Sorry, can't remember the package, but it was a -data or some such. Public bug reported: My laptop screen needs colour corrections. In Groovy this worked but in Hirsute it doesn't. I calibrated the screen and have a good profile. In Groovy I used the systemsettings5 app to install and use this colour correction. All worked perfectly. In Hirsute this profile is still there and clicking on it applies the corrections, but a few seconds later it reverts. The checkbox remains where it is. Clicking in Default and back on the profile repeats, profile on, profile off after a couple of seconds. I have installed three other profiles and notice that the delay is after the first click. I.e. clicking on profile after profile, the reversion always occurs about 3 seconds after the first click, not the last. To get the profile to stick I had to log out, log in using Ubuntu / Gnome default desktop, apply the corrections there, log out and log in to Plasma-X11. However, this didn't last over a reboot. Sorry it's been a while. I have found that if I log in at a terminal, F2, before logging in to the graphical desktop the colour profile sticks. No need to run any commands, just log in. However, it's pretty fragile. Change the screen layout, or other setting, or plug in a different monitor and the profile resets, but the settings dialog still shows the profile as applied. Hi Lena, Many thanks for you reply. The only explanation for trying to load zip.so.so I can find is that in the PHP config it was trying to load "extension=zip.so". I have removed the .so and it's still loading the module zip. As the error went away when I built the file from scratch I can't tell if this fixed it or not. Hi Athos, Many thanks for your reply. I think my dev machine had got itself in to a bit of a state. I have to support several code bases, some of which that rely on older versions of PHP. This dev machine has been around and updated since 16.04 and had PHP-5.6 and PHP-7.4 installed. Everything is now as it should be, i.e. libzip4 is now from the 22.04 repository, but I don't understand how libzip4_1.7.3-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb, and all other versions since Xenial, would have been considered a downgrade from 1:1.0.1-0+16.04+xenial+build6. This issue should probably now be closed as referring to packages from a really old setup. I had the same symptoms on my Asus m2a-vm hdmi (AMD 690G) board. I tried the i386 and AMD64 iso and neither worked from install from boot or install from live ubuntu. I wouldn't say that the prepare partitions screen hung, rather that the list of partitions/devices was empty. In my particular case, the problem is to do with RAID. My board supports RAID, but I have it set to use IDE controller in the bios. I think the installer on live CD seems to see my (disabled) raid support and lists only raid partitions (I have none). For me the solution was to download the alternative text based installer which provides an additional install screen asking whether to look for raid partitions. If I choose 'yes', I get no devices/partitions. If I choose 'no', I see my partitions and the install can be successfully completed.
