[Bug 382379] Re: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems
Is this fixed? Less than a month ago I installed 10.04 on a compaq laptop, printing to a network laser printer (can't recall the model). Everything fully up to date at the time, but it's printing PDF's at glacial speed and holding up everyone else's print jobs. Windows users in the same office have no problems (except when an ubuntu printjob is blocking them) It's been a problem for a while, I was hoping a fresh install of 10.04 would fix it, previous laptop was still running 9.10 and also had the same problem. If I just update 10.04 will the problem fix itself now? Or should I try the poppler workaround mentioned earlier? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382379 Title: pdftops CUPS filter has several problems -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver
Back when I first started running Ubuntu the screensavers _WERE_ configurable. So was the login window. I could choose what application ran when I inserted a DVD, eg have it run dvd:rip rather than the small number of programs that Ubuntu has deemed an acceptable 'player' for DVDs. I could configure dial-up networking, and it worked on all the ISP's I ever needed to use it with. It's not just this bug, but this bug is one glaring example of the whole problem. This obsession with "removing" all of the configurability is driving people away from Ubuntu. You're perpetuating the myth (by making it not a myth at all) that either Linux is greatly inferior to Windows because it has so fewer options, or that nothing useful can be done in Linux without resorting to a terminal. Please. Fix this BUG. -- no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/22007 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"
http://blog.internetnews.com/apatrizio/do-not-want-dog.jpg I've read through most of the comments and justification but I still think this change is MAJOR FAIL. Please revert. I've been working very, very hard to fix Bug #1 and this sort of change is probably the most destructive thing you could possibly have done. Nobody I've spoken to likes this change, no matter how you may justify it. You may as well have changed the default keyboard layout to dvorak! -- [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 307363] Re: USB issues with MP4 player (anyka pmp2501 4GB)
As mentioned earlier, I decided it was working about as well in Linux as it did in any other OS so any issues were simply due to very poor design of the mp3 player. It died a short while later so I am unable to provide any further information. > Looking at the changes between v2.6.21 and v2.6.27 I see this. It may > explain why v2.6.21 works and Intrepid (v2.6.27) doesn't: Just to clarify; My mpx player is still working 'acceptably' in Hardy, Intrepid and the Jaunty beta. That is to say it appears on the desktop and opens automatically and I can transfer files in both directions. Vast numbers of IO errors and retries show up in the logs, occasionally it disconnects itself, and file transfers are much slower than for other players and USB devices. However the player performs just as poorly under Windows, so I've concluded that this is a result of bad design in the player and it's probably not possible to make it work any better than it currently does. [Bug 209794] Re: "Clear Private Data" does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list
OK, I've cleared history and agree that only bookmarks remain. It does seem that they're arranged in 'most visited' order which some people would argue is still history that should have been erased. I can also see the point that if I have some dodgy pornsite buried three folders deep in my bookmarks, I do NOT want that appearing on the screen simply because I started to type some other similar URL. Perhaps we need an option 'don't show bookmarks in awesomebar' - that's a wishlist item though. Other than that, I'm happy enough that 'erase history' is doing what it should. Anybody wanting more privacy probably needs to set up a different profile for doing dodgy stuff where no history is ever saved in the first place. -- "Clear Private Data" does not clear private data from the Awesome Bar's Rich Results list https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/209794 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 307363] [NEW] USB issues with MP4 player (anyka pmp2501 4GB)
Public bug reported: In hardy, the player doesn't mount automatically, 'mount -t auto' fails, 'mount -t vfat' works. Weird filesystem, I think? In Intrepid (kernel 2.6.27-9-generic) the player mounts automatically, but still has problems. Once mounted, any attempt to access the player (read or write) generates vast numbers of errors. Behaviour is identical on two brand new players and they do not appear to have any issues operating in Windows XP, so this is 'normal behaviour' for the device, not a faulty unit. [Bug 152885] Re: USB unknown partition table
Time for me to eat some humble pie; my mp3 player does work in Intrepid, it just doesn't work in whatever passes for a recent kernel in Hardy. I guess it's time to upgrade... Also the problem _was_ much worse than just not mounting. I later noticed that the kernel was spewing all kinds of USB errors and the filesystem on the mp3 player ended up horribly corrupted.. I have yet to test this thoroughly in intrepid. -- USB unknown partition table https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152885 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 152885] Re: USB unknown partition table
The kernel developers attitude on this bugs me. A brief summary; 1) The device works perfectly in Windows and OSX, but not in Linux 2) The reason seems to be very simple. The device return 'garbage' data on the first read, and the real data on subsequent reads. Linux uses the first read. Windows and OSX ignore it and read again to get the 'real' data. 3) The fix seems painfully obvious; do what Windows does. 4) The kernel developers apparently won't fix this because the USB standard says devices shouldn't behave this way. They want to follow the standard 'to the letter' even though this differs from the actual implementation used in the the two major OSes and apparently as implemented a non-trivial number of devices. SO: Can someone who doesn't have a stick up their ass please provide a patch against a recent kernel that performs a 'garbage' read or two from USB mass-storage devices before probing for the real data, so that I can actually use my new MP3 player without having to open a root shell every time, please? -- USB unknown partition table https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152885 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 298522] [NEW] gimp-svg freezes desktop (when inkscape is also running?)
Public bug reported: When importing an SVG file (two different fairly simple svg files so far, importing to 'reasonable' resolutions eg 330x310 or 800x1200), GIMP will cause everything else on the desktop to stop working. I can still move the mouse and drag windows about but window contents and clock don't update, I can't open menus or alt-F2 to launch a new program, close windows via gui or alt-F4. I can ctrl-alt-F1 to a terminal and log in there. In text mode everything is still totally responsive, top shows normal CUP and memory usage, pstree shows a process named 'svg'. If I kill svg and return to the desktop everything works again. Originally I thought this was 'random' but after playing around a little it might depend on Inkscape also being open. The freeze is not completely random, usually if it's happened once it will continue to happen for the next three or four attempts and then not happen again for a while. And consistent with Murphy's law, it will of course happen when attempting to demonstrate the ease of use and stability of the Ubuntu desktop in front of a roomful of people... ** Affects: gimp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gimp-svg freezes desktop (when inkscape is also running?) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 191475] Re: [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications
I'm not sure how different packages identify themselves as being a media player; perhaps this bug should be filed against the VLC package for not registering itself somwhere? I still want an option at the bottom of the list "Run this command" so I can have some completely different program start, such as k9copy.. And I still want the menu to be duplicated under System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media" where it used to be. I still strongly believe that's the most 'intuitive' place people will look for it. And even if it wasn't, I also think that it's not a good idea for Ubuntu to make such confusing changes to the interface just when we're starting to get 'non-geeks' learning to use the OS. 2008/7/8 Philippe Piquer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > I also had to dig deep into Google to find a correct answer (at least one > that work) for VLC. > So resolving this important for Mr Everybody. > > > http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy#How_to_make_VLC_open_when_you_insert_a_DVD > > -- > [hardy] media tab in file management preferences missing applications > https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191475 > You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber > of the bug. > -- This email is for the intended recipient only. What's on the disk (DVD or VCD video files) should probably be in Nautilus. The dialog should absolutely still be easy to find; the properties dialog when you right-click the disk on the desktop would be a logical place (and it should allow you to set actions for all recognisable disk types, not just whatever happens to be in the drive right now) The dialog also needs to go back on the "removable drives and media" tab. That's absolutely a logical place for people to go looking for it. I made my comments known on the relevant nautilus bug list, but the > developers know best and blame my viewpoint on an inability to change > rather than their bad design decision. > > The gnome developers need to rethink what they're doing. You don't make gnome more user friendly by removing or hiding all the options, you make it userfriendly by putting the options in the place that users would most naturally expect to find them! [Bug 221331] [NEW] [hardy] cannot change screensaver options
Public bug reported: Many versions of Ubuntu ago, it was possible to set a number of individual options on each screensaver. At some point along the way, somebody decided those options were too confusing or something and removed them, so now if I want to change the default options I have to go looking for some textfile config. [Bug 159868] Re: nvidia-glx makes links to incompatable modules
OK, I've tracked down the REAL problem, finally, I hope At some point I tried to use the nvidia-glx-new drivers, and found that they didn't work with my card. I also once tried nvidia's binary driver installer, which is quite likely the most frustrating mistake I've ever made since it seems to be at the root of every problem I've suffered with drivers in the six months since. And along the way I somehow ended up with /usr/lib/libGL*.100.14.19 libraries which should have been removed when the matching nvidia driver binary was uninstalled. When I install nvidia-glx (or probably any number of other packages) they run ldconfig, which moves those links to the most recent libraries. SO. There is no bug. BTW; why the change from nice friendly gnome-cups-manager to the hideously awful system-config-printer ?!!! It's like something out of Slackware FFS!! Somebody please change this back, or give me a really good reason why I shouldn't use the old system! -- [Gutsy Tribe4] Can not found Canon printers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131521 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The card I have in this computer is one of those. . It works with nvidia-glx-legacy, but is quite unstable with that driver . It works much better with a manually installed 1.0.9639 driver. Could this driver be separately packaged as nvidia-glx-older or something? Because it's a real pain to manually fix it after each kernel patch. . Restricted manager is offering me the choice of a driver (nvidia-gxl) that will NOT work with this card, it might as well be offering me the use of the ATI driver. If I install nvidia-glx rather than nvidia-glx-legacy, I will end up with a system than can't be started. Whatever logic in the software decides that ATI drivers are not an appropriate choice for an nVidia TNT2 should aldo decide that that _only_ nvidia-glx-legacy should be offered in this dialog. nvm, I'll check the latest ISO and find more bugs for you all to fix :) -- [gutsy] restricted driver manager claims 2 nvidia drivers in use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 17881] Re: usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB
I'm not sure if I have the same problem, but it's quite similar and has happened on two different machines (both running Feisty), multiple USB ports, different logins, and with two completely different MP3 players. I start to copy a significant amount of files, and after a short time I get all the symptoms of the device having been unplugged. This happens about one time in ten, perhaps more often if I start copying several folders in parallel. I glanced in dmesg the first time it happened and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, it looked as if I had just unplugged the drive (at the time I assumed I had just bumped the cable). -- usb flash memory hangs after copying few MB https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/17881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
