have implemented this now, CUPS printers are now assumed to always support collation, and for PDF based printers we call cupsAddOption("collate", ...) while PS based legacy printers still get their weird PPD stuff. this has been tested on 1 HP printer so far, but that one probably worked before already so it's not very interesting :) oddly we have a "Create single print jobs for collated output" checkbox buried in the print dialog that can still enable the objectionable behaviour, which no doubt some user has cried loudly for many years ago... i wonder when support for PS CUPS printing could be removed, currently we build for a RHEL5-era Linux baseline... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025839 Title: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1025839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1025839]
Normally an app does not need to care of Collate supported by the printer or not. It should simply send one copy of the job and the IPP attributes for the number of copies and for collate on/off. Then there is only one CUPS job and CUPS handles hopw it gets printed, especially whether the printer does hardware copies/collate and if not sending data repeatedly within this one job. An app should never send more than one job to CUPS when the user has clicked "Print" once. This is a bug. Page management (copies, collate, even/odd pages, selected pages, mirrored print, N-up, ...) is handled by CUPS, so please let the desktop apps send one copy of the full document along with the appropriate IPP attributes to control page management. CUPS does the rest then, in the same way as for the other apps. Only exception couls be selected pages here, to not send 100 pages to CUPS if the user only wants 1 page. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025839 Title: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1025839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

> if the PPD for the printer contains "Collate=True" and if it doesn't then > Collate is handled > as fall-back by LO itself so you get multiple jobs. Just to clarify: The reason this is not a good idea is that CUPS already handles this case wotj a better & smarter solution. The whole thing appears as a single job in the print queue which can be canceled, etc. rather than as many independent jobs. For example, the CUPS foomatic Postscript driver implements the '#' lpr option by replicating the document's page descriptions and sending a *single* Postscript file to the printer containing all the pages. So if the document has 3 pages, and you ask for 10 copies, then a single job is sent to the printer containing 30 pages, and the job can be paused or canceled in CUPS or cancelled by pressing a button on the printer. CUPS+gutenprint for HP printers does a similar thing but sends a PCL file instead of Postscript. (This is on Ubuntu linux. If the print server on Windows can't handle this sort of thing then LO should do something similar (*not* queuing multiple jobs) on Windows. But on Linux it doesn't need to do anything at all, just pass the '#https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025839 Title: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1025839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This issue is still present with Ubuntu 13.10 and LibreOffice 4.1.5.3. >From reading the comments above, some are saying this is a feature. I don't think so, and the collate should not be an issue. Single page dosuments have the same thing happen. For 10 copies of a single page the printer gets 10 print jobs of 1 page each and not 1 print job of 10 copies. This has happened on my two office printers here in the last week when I'm in a hurry and forget to make a pdf before printing so I can print the documents as PDF files. [Bug 1025839] Re: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job)
In LO 4.1.2.3 on Linux: 1. There *is no* "Collate" option in the print dialog. 2. There is a "Create single print jobs for collated output" on the "Options" tab, but it has no effect. Multiple jobs are queued (when copies > 1) regardless of whether it is checked or not. 3. Either the label on the above-mentioned checkbox or its hover-popup text is wrong, because they give opposite descriptions (the hover help says "Check to NOT rely on the printer to create collated copies, but create a print job for each copy instead"). The PPD file (attached) does not contain the keyword "Collate" And again, why is LO attempting to handle collation in the first place, rather than leaving it to the print server (CUPS here)? The print server knows how to implement its -# option, and it is closer to the hardware than an application like LO. On Linux, at least, I don't think LO should be trying to be a low-level hardware driver. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1025839 Title: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/df-libreoffice/+bug/1025839/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

this is apparently a feature (as already mentinoed by Bjoern comment #9) that was introduced in OOo 3.3, CWS "pdfprint". relevant code in PspSalInfoPrinter::GetCapabilities: const PPDKey* pKey = aData.m_pParser ? aData.m_pParser->getKey( OUString("Collate") ) : NULL; const PPDValue* pVal = pKey ? pKey->getValue(OUString("True")) : NULL; so we check if the PPD for the printer contains "Collate=True" and if it doesn't then Collate is handled as fall-back by LO itself so you get multiple jobs. can people affected by this please check if the CUPS PPD file for their printer contains a "Collate" line? not knowing much about PPDs i'm wondering if "True" is the only value we need to check for, and whether assuming the printer can't do it is an appropriate default if "Collate" is missing.
[Bug 1025839] Re: Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job)
Why does LibreOffice need to know if the printer hardware supports Collate? Isn't it the job of the print server (i.e. CUPS) to know this and decide how to do multiple copies when requested? ( For example, single-page jobs can always be multi-copied in Postscript printers by simply repeating the 'showpage' operator, even if the printer can't print multiple collated copies of multi-page jobs) If LibreOffice just invokes "lpr -# ..." or equivalent, then the spooler should do the right thing.

I had no idea that LibreOffice would be sending 75 individual print jobs to the printer instead of 1 print job with 75 copies. It crashed the printer, and also the driver after several copies. Then there was the horrendous mess of getting all of the unprinted jobs deleted. I was able to use my inkjet (HP OfficeJet Pro 8000) to finish the printing after the laser crashed. Once again individual print jobs were sent for each copy, but the printer did not crash. Once everything was printed, I had about 10 minutes of icons coming on the screen saying printing started and printing completed when the printing was all done. The icons were playing catchup with all of the print jobs. I've tried to research this. The only way I've found that you can print a large number of copies is to export the page to pdf, and then print the pdf. [Bug 1025839] [NEW] Printing multiple copies submits multiple separate jobs (should submit one job)
Public bug reported: In the print dialog, if "Number of Copies" is set to 50 then 50 separate, independent print jobs are spooled. It should submit a single print job, specifying 50 copies. This will allow the printer to do the replication if it can (all Postscript printers can). This is important because: 1) Submitting a separate jobs for each copy causes the page(s) to be rendered again and again, with a drastic reduction in through-put. This is CRUCIAL if the pages contain complex graphics or images which take a long time to render or transmit to the printer: A one-minute delay for the first of 50 copies is okay, but 1 minute for *each* of 50 copies is intolerable. 2) If the print job was a mistake, it is virtually impossible to stop the printer. Pressing the cancel button on the printer cancels just one copy, but after a little while the next one starts printing... 3) It is very inconvenient to cancel the job in CUPS, with 50 separate jobs, without affecting other unrelated jobs in the queue (you can cancel all jobs in the queue at once, or one at a time). Note that CUPS has always supported a "number of copies" option at the command-line level. For example lpr '-#50' file.pdf prints 50 copies of the file, rendering it once only.
