Reassigning; not an alsa-lib issue. ** Changed in: alsa-driver (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: alsa-lib => alsa-driver Status: New => Incomplete -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105633] Re: volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty
As a note, I don't believe this is a bug with alsa-lib, but somewhere in gnome. In addition to the newest alsa-driver. I also tried the system with the exact same driver and alsa-lib I used in Edgy, where I never experienced this problem. With the same setup as in edgy the problem still persisted in feisty. -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105633] Re: volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty
Solution found: Tried to compile the newest alsa-driver, lib and plugins (1.0.14rc4). This did not help with the media-key problem, the sound quality did however get significantly better when using headphones. With this alsa- driver the first channel is changed from 'Master' to 'Headphone'. The channel doesn't seem to have any effect however. The same problem still persisted with the 'Headphone' channel even though the channel it's self had no effect on the volume. As now I now control over the volume with the media keys, I ended up going through gconf-editor. By changing the value in desktop > gnome > sound > default_mixer_tracks from 'Headphone' to 'PCM' (without the quotes) makes the media keys control the 'PCM' channel instead of 'Headphone'. The PCM channel does not get muted just by lowering the volume as did the Master (and Headphone) channel, thus the system never ends up in the state described in the original report. I would assume the same fix works even without upgrading the drivers.

Here are screenshots of alsamixer, gnome-volume-control and the volume applet at the cases where the volume is stuck. In both cases the volume is being increased with the media keys when the screenshot was taken. In neither of the cases is the volume actually really muted, but just very low. -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Tried bence's solution. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. The volume still gets stuck at mute, with the media keys being unable to increase it from there. thanks anyway ;) -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105633] Re: volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty
I'VE FOUND A SOLUTION !!! 1. Go to System -> Preferences -> Sound 2. Select the first TAB "Devices" 3. Set "ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture" on all the drop-down lists (I think it's also set by default. Just to make it sure :) ) 4. Set Default Mixer Tracks to "Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer)" (Maybe set by default too.) 5. Choose "Master" from the list 6. Click CLOSE It worked for me ... maybe works for you too :) ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY ;-) Shame on me because it is not a bug. Simply I haven't read the manual :( sorry ...
** Description changed: When the volume on a HP dv2000 laptop is decreased to zero either by the volume applet or especially with the media keys, the system sometimes ends up in a state, where alsamixer states that the master volume level is at zero but not muted, whereas the volume applet thinks the channel is muted. From this state the volume can no longer be controlled with the media keys on the laptop. After increasing the volume from either alsamixer or the volume applet the volume controlling media keys function normally again. Muting with the media keys work and when the volume is at zero and both alsamixer and the volume applet report the channels muted, the volume can be brought back with the media keys, I did not experience this behavior with edgy and a self compiled alsa driver (1.1.14rc3) on the same laptop. The sound card on the laptop is a - hda intel conexant CX200551 (Waikiki) and the OS is Feisty Beta with - packages updated on april 11 (same problem before update). + hda intel (ICH6) conexant CX20551 (Waikiki) and the OS is Feisty Beta + with packages updated on april 11 (same problem before update). I'm not sure whether this is caused by alsa or the applet (or something - completely diiferent). + completely different). -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi ! I can confirm this ... exactly the same bug on a Samsung P40 notebook. The "sound UP" and "sound DOWN" buttons have no effect and when I reach the 0 level I stick there. My configuration is 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller soundcard, Feisty (final), AlsaMixer v1.0.13, latest update on 22th april. -- volume control unable to increase volume from zero with media keys on HP dv2000 with feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
