[Bug 138249] Re: trackerd should be run with ionice -c 3

2008-08-29 Thread Miguel Rodríguez
Well, just FWI. In Intrepid this will no longer be an issue, since
IOPRIO_CLASS_IDLE does no longer need CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability.

See #138846.

tracker already attempts ionice -c 3 and falls back to lower levels if
that returns an error

[Bug 138249] Re: trackerd should be run with ionice -c 3

2007-09-10 Thread Miguel Rodríguez
According to the ioprio_set manpage, a process needs the CAP_SYS_ADMIN
capability to select the IOPRIO_CLASS_IDLE scheduling class.

Quote:
Attempts to set very high priorities (IOPRIO_CLASS_RT) or very low ones
(IOPRIO_CLASS_IDLE) require the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability.

I don't understand why a process should need admin privileges to lower
its resource requirements, but it seems to be the case.

Hope this helps.

2007-09-10 Thread Jamie McCracken
yeah I cant get it to work without root which is a shame as it would
help a lot

unless this requirement is relaxed in the kernel we wont (nor will
anything else) be able to take advantage of it

its basic paranoia to force admin rights to prevent a hypothetical
denial of service

[Bug 138249] Re: trackerd should be run with ionice -c 3

2007-09-10 Thread Miguel Rodríguez
So, the thing is that a user is allowed to kill -KILL it's own
processes, but it is not allowed to lower their disk access priority.
This doesn't make much sense to me...

Anyway, it looks like it is really up to the kernel folks to fix it :(.

0.6.2 now uses ionice's idle class if available - can you confirm which
version you are using?
(0.6.2 is now in gutsy)
