[Bug 1654778] Re: growisofs: INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT error with DVD-Rs

2017-01-09 Thread Polly
Thanks for the explanation.

It appears that I can change the bug's status to invalid, so I will do
that now.

** Changed in: dvd+rw-tools (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Invalid

[Bug 1654778] Re: growisofs: INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT error with DVD-Rs

2017-01-09 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

yes, DVD-R and DVD+RW are treated quite differently by the drives.
The former is a sequential multi-session medium, the latter is a
random-access read-write medium. Firmware procedures inside the drive
differ. The laser used is the same, afaik. But the dye on the media is
quite surely not the same. So physical interaction of laser and medium
is supposed to differ.

You have to expect that the problems with those DVD-R media are only
the beginning of drive deterioration.

As for closing the bug: I assume we need a person who holds a rank
at Ubuntu for that.

Have a nice day :)

[Bug 1654778] Re: growisofs: INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT error with DVD-Rs

2017-01-08 Thread Polly
Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your response. You were right, the problem was with my
hardware.

I plugged in the Sony to a Mac, and tried burning to the same media
there. It didn't work. I found an old Plextor PX 712SA and plugged it
into my Linux Mint box and retried the burn with the previously-failing
media, and it worked.

Before I ran these tests, I was thinking this couldn't be a problem with
my hardware, because the DVD+RW burn worked. Was it working only by
chance? Or is there something different about the OPC phase and DVD+RW
media?

Thanks for looking at this bug. Please do mark it closed.

Best,
Polly

[Bug 1654778] Re: growisofs: INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT error with DVD-Rs

2017-01-08 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

this looks like a bad relationship between drive and medium.

OPC (Optimum Power Calibration) is preparation stage of burning were the
drive makes experiments about the laser settings. The media have an
especially reserved data area for that.

Those experiments did not yield a satisfying result. So the drive told
growisofs (two times) that it cannot deal with this particular medium.
There is few hope that a different burn program would bring better
results, except by mere luck.

You could try other DVD-R media. Sometimes even a different spindle from
the same brand can yield better results.
But it might well be that the drive has reached the end of its life time.
Google finds the drive model "DRX-710UL" discussed already in 2008.
How old is yours ?

Another (rather remote) possibility is that udisks2 is still groping the
drive while growisofs already began to burn. CD-R[W] and DVD-R[W] are more
vulnerable to external interference during burns than are DVD+RW or DVD-RAM.
To exclude this possibility either disable usdisks2 for your drive
or wait after medium insertion until the drive surely has ended blinking
(and does not start blinking again after a few seconds of steady light).

Have a nice day :)
