[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
It had been so long I forgot about this bug. I no longer have the machine that the bug was observed on. After a few months of not being able to live boot Ubuntu to create a dual-boot environment. I replaced that machine in early 2009 and donated it mid 2009 to someone who could not afford to buy any computer. Since I cannot recreate the test setup, I must defer to others as to its closure. What I do remember was that it would not live boot with its video card in even when using Ubuntu 9.04. After that I don't know because I no longer have the machine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 Title: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/229753/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
sixdrift, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please let us know your results. [Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
A user on the Answers system, ziggy1194, using Ubuntu live cd 8.10 i386 is having the exact same problem and getting the error: init: rc- default main process( 5304) terminated with status 255 Which leaves me to believe that this is not directly related to the video card, however something else. I wish there were more details in the error. Given that it does not contain "SEGV" it leads me to conclusion these are not the same bugs, however they are linked for the time being as they have the same affect -- no installation and full stop /hang-up of the system. But, as I said it does not seem like the video card is causing the issue. We are attempting installation using other methods. We will see what happens. - CH -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
Sorry for the lateness of this response. Confirmed that the removal of the video card got past the reported problem. Switched back to on-board video and was able to get further toward live session. So it now gets to login screen, then screen goes black and spinning wait cursor stays up several minutes, then just stops. However, now the mouse pointer still moves so it is obviously not slammed to a halt. I consider the reported problem solved, so I will probably not pursue this next issue as the machine has moved from primary use to secondary use status. If someone thinks it useful to test something on this platform, let me know. Otherwise it is relegated to Windows only status in our house. -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I would like to report that i was having the exact same problem, with the exact same error codes, and removing my video card prior to booting resolved the issue. thanks for the help! =) -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
Ok, I finally got back to this machine with time for some debugging. I downloaded 8.10 Beta (both DVD and CD versions). The new kernel with Ubuntu 8.10 does not fix the problem. I still cannot boot the live CD. Some updated information regarding the machine itself. 1) Uses Intel 82845 chipset. 2) Trying to use Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 display adapter 3) Uses Intel 82801 chipset for other I/O When debugging this issue, I turn off "quiet" and "splash" and I set "noacpi" and nolacpi". Result of trying to boot with Ubuntu 8.10 live CD results in a segment violation with the following messages are output: init: rcS main process (4281) killed by SEGV signal init: Unable to execute "/bin/sh" for rc-default: Permission denied init: rc-default main process (5650) terminated with status 255 I seem to be left in some sort of command line. I type characters and they are echoed to the screen. Pressing Enter results in a new line to the screen. What is further interesting is that if I press ctrl-alt-del, I get the following: init: Unable to execute "/bin/sd" for control-alt-delete. Permission denied init: control-alt-delete main process (5650) terminated with status 255 Also, I get a one-up number for the PID with each pressing of ctrl-alt- del provided I delay between each. Holding down ctrl-alt-del results in: init: control-alt-delete respawning too fast, stopped So the summary is, the new kernel did NOT fix this bug, such as it is. -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 229753] Re: Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have no PCI express on the board. I will recheck all BIOS settings when I get back to the machine in a few days but when I checked before, I saw nothing that gave me hope as to a BIOS setting problem. -- Live CD init failure - rcs main process killed by SEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/229753 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
