Actually, until they make a module for hardy,
you can change the sources.list file to point to "etch" instead of "hardy" that
fixes it - apparently the same kernel rev.

[Bug 222925] [NEW] Dell Inspiron Fn key on Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 [KDE 3.5.9]

2008-04-27 Thread TWO

#Dell Inspiron 1300

The Fn (function) key works for all but two short cuts:

Fn + F10 = eject CD
Fn + F2 = enable/ disable wireless

To reproduce, simply attempt the following on a Dell Inspiron laptop.
This one is a 1300, but I assume that others have the same keyboard
layout more or less.

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE hard drives not visible

2008-04-27 Thread Don Malcolm
** Summary changed:

- IDE addressing screwed in Hardy
+ IDE hard drives not visible

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: file-roller
+ Binary package hint: linux kernel

- The addressing of IDE devices is screwed. Rather than address as hda hdb
- hdc hdd they are being addressed in Hardy as sda sdb. This works if you
- only have one IDE drive on hda. It gets misinterpreted as sda, but is
- functional.
+ Not all IDE hard drives being detected and reported in fdisk -l.

- The problem becomes clearly apparent when you start putting hard drives
- on the secondary IDE controller. For example when you have one drive as
- master on hda and another as master on the secondary controller on hdc.
- Only hda is picked up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not
- visible. Doing 'fdisk -l' only reports on drives on the primary
- controller.
+ In earlier kernels IDE devices were accessed as hda hdb hdc hdd. It
+ would seem that these are now being mapped to sda sdb etc.
+
+ One of my IDE hard drives is not being detected.
+
+ The problem seems to relate to putting hard drives on the secondary IDE
+ controller. For example when you have one drive as master on hda and
+ another as master on the secondary controller on hdc. Only hda is picked
+ up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not visible. Doing 'fdisk
+ -l' only reports on drives on the primary controller.

Furthermore, in other configurations, I have had only drives on the
secondary controller being picked up, with drives on the primary
  controller invisible.

My hardware is under two years old.

Gutsy works fine. Gutsy correctly addresses my IDE devices.

I have for much of yesterday and today been attempting to install Hardy.
But without success. I tried a fresh install of Dapper, and upgrade to
Hardy, but that failed with unresolvable dependencies, that did not
resolve when instructions to -f install were followed.

So I did a fresh install of Gutsy and upgrade to Hardy. This correctly
- addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but were screwed after the upgrade
+ addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but failed after the upgrade
  (otherwise successful) to Hardy.

Being totally disillusioned with Hardy, I installed Fedora Core 8 (just
- released). Interestingly, the same screwup in IDE addressing occurred
- there also. So this leads me to believe the source of this show stopper
- bug, is somewhere upstream.
+ released). Interestingly, the same fault occurred there also. So this
+ leads me to believe the source of this show stopper bug, is somewhere
+ upstream.

I am forced to abandon Hardy, and will make do with Gutsy, until a
resolution to this bug is made available.

Maybe related to this. On another machine that has no IDE devices
connected, the grub bootloader in Hardy failed, and gave the option of
LILO during the install. It now is fully functional using the LILO
  bootloader.

[Bug 222246] Re: lost screen real estate with ubuntu 8.04 upgrade

2008-04-27 Thread johnmuir
Solved!

It was due to the Lightning extension. I had the version 0.7 of
Lightning installed and the Ubuntu installation updated Thunderbird but
not the Lightning extension. Funnily Thunderbird did not complain about
the incompatible Lightning extension. Anyway after uninstalling
Lightning and installing the current 0.8 version the problem was
resolved.

deathrow, Synaptics allows you to force a specific version for each package

don't you force the compiz version and prevent synaptics from continuing to
update your compiz, until the problem is fixed? I did it and it works for me.

[Bug 68224] Re: OpenOffice artifacts when using fglrx

2008-04-27 Thread Rami Autiomäki
I just tried this with fglrx without 3D-accelaration and it seems to work
better. It won't leave artifacts, but guide line is still continous.
With open source Ati driver guide line leaves artefacts even with
3D-acceleration disabled.
With fglrx 3D-accelaration enabled and xorg.conf option " Option
"XaaNoMono8x8PatternFillRect" "true" " guide line won't leave artifacts, but
is still continous. When I added option " Option "XaaNoPixmapCache" "true" "
guide line was dotted and worked as it worked with Vesa driver. Maybe some
xserver developer can say what is happening here.
This same issue is reported in openoffice bug tracker in past, but this bug is
closed.

Almost the same procedure - using 2.4.0 on Hardy:

1. Put data in a cell.
2. Merge it will the next cell.
3. Copy it ctrl-c
4. Paste it somewhere else ctrl-v
5. Edit it F2.
6. On hitting return, oocalc hangs.

Oh yeah, me too. Namely updating Ubuntu Studio 7.10 to 8.04. I had to

[Bug 201813] Re: Ubuntu hangs at shutdown

2008-04-27 Thread Matt Austin
I believe that this is the same issue which prevents the EeePC from
turning off when shutting down - caused by snd-hda-intel.

This is a widely documented problem with the EeePC, and a workaround is
described in the Ubuntu Community Documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EeePC#head-59652af56e26236e0c4076af54096c7f0cc52d02

Although this problem is written about widely, it is strange that this
bug has not been reported more widely on Launchpad.

We really need a proper fix to be distributed to encourage the use of
Ubuntu on the EeePC.

** Summary changed:

- Gutsy hangs at shutdown
+ Ubuntu hangs at shutdown

** Description changed:

  PROBLEM:

- Gutsy Gibbon hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off.
+ Ubuntu hangs at shutdown and doesn't power off.

  REMARKS:

  - At shutdown, the following message appears:
NetworkManager: nm_hal_deinit(): libhal shutdown failed - connection
is closed

  - Some suspicious messages from dmesg:
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
hda_codec: Cannot set up configuration from BIOS. Using 3-stack mode...
apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe.

  - To use the command "sudo rmmod -w snd_hda_intel" solves the problem
and the computer power off. Furthermore, the network warning does not
appear. To use the switch "-f" does not unload the module.

  - The system does not hibernate when using pidgin and, sometimes,
  firefox and it never suspends.

  CONCLUSION

There is no conclusion since the source of the problem is not clear. It
could be the sound driver, the network driver, the energy management or
whatever else. This bug has been largely reported and confirmed (since
6.06), but never solved, I don't know why.

[Bug 200500] Re: WLAN loosing connection: No ProbeResp

I'm having the same issue. Here's uname -a:
Linux laptop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 02:46:46 UTC 2008 x86_64

Attached is the output from lspci -vvnn. Also I'll post the output of dmesg
after the problem has occurred (and I have reloaded the kernel module). This
problem happens all the time on my laptop (anywhere from 2-3 times/hour), and
it is always fixed by doing this:
sudo killall NetworkManager
sudo modprobe -r iwl4965

I'll attach my dmesg from just after startup if necessary. Thanks for

[Bug 222931] [NEW] Gparted can't resize NTFS

2008-04-27 Thread shanen (Shannon Jacobs)
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

Not sure how to best install this, but confirmed it with several recent
versions of gparted, including the one inside the live Hardy CD, two
bootable gparted CDs, and a Mandriva live CD. The gparted program runs
normally, but the NTFS partition cannot be resized. There is a yellow
triangle with an exclamation point, and the information says that
BadClust could not be decompressed, that the contents are unreadable,
and that some operations are not available, obviously including the
resizing operation. The partition can be mounted, and I can wander
around inside the data files, but of course that locks the partition in
gparted, and it still can't be resized. Unmounting it also works, but
then it goes back to the yellow triangle state...

Not sure how much background of what kind is needed, but here goes: The
machine in question is a Sharp PC-WA70-L. I've been running Ubuntu in
the other partition for about a year. The machine ships with the main
NTFS partition (about 80 GB), a smaller partition that I converted for
Ubuntu (about 11 GB), and a recovery partition (about 6 GB), so I didn't
need to use gparted before this. However, now I want to split off a
fresh partition and try Hardy from scratch there. Ubuntu has never run
that well on the machine, actually, and based on the live CD tests, it
already seems pretty certain that at least one of the problems remains
unsolved.

As usual, I'll be glad to do a certain amount of diagnostic work, but I
don't want to make a career out of it...

[Bug 222935] [NEW] sudo stops working after filling a domain name in manual network configuration

2008-04-27 Thread gary_inNYC
Public bug reported:

In Hardy (x86 final release clean install), I found that manually typing
in a domain name in Network Settings (general section) stops the sudo
command from working. Subsequently, an "unresolved host" message comes
up when issuing a sudo command in the terminal, crippling much
functionality of the system.

To fix the issue, I had to remove the domain name I entered, and sudo
worked correctly again.

[Bug 214683] Re: [Hardy] Mathematica fonts look bad

2008-04-27 Thread Art
I have the same problem as jeromek in an upgrade from ubuntu 7.10 to
8.04, x86_64 with nvidia card. My font path was the same as jeromek and
I don't think it changed from 7.10 to 8.04.

I can also confirm Bartek on a 32bit laptop in similar upgrade. My
experience with Wolfram support is that they don't have the resources to
help debug distribution related bugs.

I have nothing to add. Mathematica can find the ttf fonts. Maybe the
switch to Xorg 1.4 from 1.3 did it and some broken interaction with
Mathematica's private java jre.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-04-27 Thread Chris Cheney
I see this problem on the hard drive in my laptop as well.

Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 (Travelstar 5K160)

Under Ubuntu it increments the load_cycle_count at least every 9s or so.

I booted into Vista to attempt to see if it had the problem under it as
well but I couldn't come up with anything conclusive since Vista would
NEVER stop reading/writing my drive even though I was doing nothing on
the machine. It was still reading/writing at 0.5-1MB/s according to
resource monitor an hour after it had booted. I never actually use Vista
(other than for firmware updates) so I may try doing a clean install
using the information from
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228/ , and then see
if I can get it to stop constantly writing to my drive with none of the
vendor supplied bloatware installed.

[Bug 221979] Re: Inconsistent snprintf format specification parsing

2008-04-27 Thread dremon
Looks like this problem is fixed in the mingw-runtime 3.14. Is it
possible to update Ubuntu package with the latest upstream version?

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: mingw32
+ Binary package hint: mingw32-runtime

  OS: Ubuntu 8.04/AMD64.
- Package: 4.2.1.dfsg-1ubuntu1
+ Package: 3.13-1

  Description:
The snprintf library function incorrectly parses the "%lu" format specifier
as "unsigned long long" instead of "unsigned long" resulting in incorrect value
formatting.

  Example:
  #include
  int main() {
  char buf[256];
  snprintf(buf, 256, "%lu", (size_t)12345678);
  printf(buf);
  return 0;
  }

  Prints:
  9151369040453460302

  Instead of:
  12345678

Other functions like printf and sprintf do work fine.
Native Linux GCC compiler version 4.2.3 produces correct code in both 32 and
64 mode.
When replacing (size_t) with (unsigned long long) the above code works fine
also in mingw32.

[Bug 68224] Re: OpenOffice artifacts when using GL

2008-04-27 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks for the upstream bug link. It do seems like this is specific to
ATI cards. Maybe I'll go back on my previous statement. It can be an
issue with those cards, and some functionality in the opensource driver
might have been closely based on reverse engineering of fglrx and have
copied some bugs as well.

** Summary changed:

- OpenOffice artifacts when using GL

[Bug 222937] [NEW] gnome terminal scrollback buffer changed unexpectedly

2008-04-27 Thread Chase Phillips
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

(I checked for bugs filed on gnome-terminal in Launchpad that might
match this but couldn't find any. Sorry if it's a dupe.)

While using gnome-terminal today I was surprised when what was once in
my terminal buffer was replaced with the contents of another terminal
(which based on my hazy recollection had already been closed). The end
result looked like this:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage$ cd app
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage/app$ fgrep -r valid_order_number * | grep

502 man -k uid

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Note that the following commands at the top of the paste aren't in the
output of 'history|tail':

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage$ cd app
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage/app$ fgrep -r * | grep -v
svn | less

For the combination of history output and terminal buffer output to make
sense, command 501 should have been 'fgrep -r * | grep
-v svn | less' and command 500 should have been 'cd app'.

Before the change in the buffer, the line:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ man -k uid

originally was preceded by the line:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ man geteuid

On the remote system, this command normally leaves the following output
in my buffer:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ man geteuid
  Reformatting geteuid(2), please wait...
  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

The version of man on the remote system uses less as its pager by
default, I think. If it's important to verify that, I will. (Just let
me know how to verify it.) When in the pager, hitting 'q' causes the
TTY to redraw. I suspect the redraw event itself brought about the
problem. Running man or less on the remote host over and over doesn't
reproduce the problem.

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 Friday morning (California time) and this is the
second time this has happened. I didn't believe my eyes the first time
it happened, but the second time around I wasn't able to dismiss it as a
glitch in the Matrix.

Local system info:

The local system running gnome-terminal is a Thinkpad X60s with Ubuntu 8.04.
Was originally Gutsy Gibbon. I used the update manager's dist upgrade
feature to migrate to 8.04.

[Bug 222936] [NEW] upgrading to Hardy fails

2008-04-27 Thread Malek Ghantous
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Tried to update my Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu 6.06 laptop (I've all three
desktops installed, and I can't remember which one was first) and
followed the instructions on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades#head-
e7f287c730b93116f89de7ea7e05efbe95fa6dd1 for performing a "Network
upgrade for Kubuntu desktops". After running "do-release-upgrade -d -m

Could not calculate the upgrade

A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

[Bug 188660] Re: Hardy alpha 4 live CD loops between login and desktop

2008-04-27 Thread Tormod Volden
Could this be a compiz problem, causing the X server to crash? Your card should
have been blacklisted for compiz though. Can you please try to get some log
files, like Xorg.0.log? One way would be to boot with "safe graphics mode",
then switch to a console:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop# to stop gdm from restarting
sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf # and change to "ati" driver
startx # to try starting Xorg, which might die
 cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/Desktop/ati.log
sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf # and change back to "vesa" driver
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start# login in again and send the log to us

(I vaguely remember an issue with the gdm init script failing to stop
gdm on the live CD. Maybe you have to just kill it.)

[Bug 222939] [NEW] Driver nVidia GeForce 8400M GS (rev a1) Fails in Hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Félim Whiteley
Public bug reported:

I've upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. After reboot from upgrade the system
started X but it was interlaced lines of distortion. Mainly a white
screen with garbled black lines. I switched to console and enabled
"vesa" and restarted X, it was fine. When I logged in I received the
pop-up from restricted drivers, I enabled it again in case there was an
issue on first boot. No joy the same issue takes place.

I will attach the xorg log and xorg.conf in case it is of use.

[Bug 222938] [NEW] Virt-Manager is unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon

2008-04-27 Thread Ilari Mäkelä
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

There is already discussion about this bug in bug number #198957 but
it's a bit off the line and it's stated as "Fix released". So when I try
to connect remotely to my Xen dom0 host I get this error:

Unable to open a connection to the libvirt management daemon.

Verify that:
 - The 'libvirt-bin' package is installed
 - The 'libvirtd' daemon has been started

I've heard that people also have this error when connecting to local xen
host but I'm only using virt-manager to manage remote host so haven't
tested local domains. I have libvirt-bin installed and running on both
hosts. My server is running 64bit Ubuntu 8.04 (Linux inno-xen
2.6.24-16-xen) and xen version 3.2 and my desktop, where I'm using virt-
manager, is running 32bit Ubuntu 8.04 (Linux isokisu 2.6.24-16-generic)
with virt-manager 0.5.3. Xm list gives me this one on my server:

NameID Mem VCPUs State Time(s)
Domain-0 0 3888 2 r- 3338.2

And libvirtd is also running:

root 9336 0.0 0.0 81632 2668 ?SApr26 0:00
/usr/sbin/libvirtd -d

Here is some more details about the error:

[Bug 221304] Re: EnvyNG installs Ubuntu's lrm but it should install its own packages

I think I will have to rename the source code to linux-restricted-
modules-envy so that it doesn't conflict with linux-restricted-modules

[Bug 219868] Re: Boot fails with "initrd extends beyond end of memory" after upgrade to Hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Chris Samuel
Having built myself a mainline 2.6.25 kernel with netconsole support and
the necessary drivers for SCSI and XFS I can confirm that this happens
upstream too.

This is an extract from dmesg from the working Gutsy kernel:

[0.00] Linux version 2.6.22-14-server ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version
4.1.3 20070929 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.2-16ubuntu2)) #1 SMP Tue Feb 12
08:27:05 UTC 2008 (Ubuntu 2.6.22-14.52-server)
[0.00] BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
[0.00] BIOS-e801: - 0009f000 (usable)
[0.00] BIOS-e801: 0010 - 1000 (usable)
[0.00] 0MB HIGHMEM available.
[0.00] 256MB LOWMEM available.

this is the same section of dmesg from the non-functional 2.6.25 kernel:

[0.00] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset
[0.00] Linux version 2.6.25-cs1 ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.2.3
(Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #1 SMP Sun Apr 27 01:31:12 EST 2008
[0.00] BIOS-provided physical RAM map:
[0.00] BIOS-e801: - 0009f000 (usable)
[0.00] BIOS-e801: 0010 - 0100 (usable)
[0.00] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset
[0.00] 16MB LOWMEM available.

So it is indeed getting the amount of LOWMEM wrong. :-(

[Bug 222937] Re: gnome terminal scrollback buffer changed unexpectedly

2008-04-27 Thread Chase Phillips
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

(I checked for bugs filed on gnome-terminal in Launchpad that might
match this but couldn't find any. Sorry if it's a dupe.)

While using gnome-terminal today I was surprised when what was once in
my terminal buffer was replaced with the contents of another terminal
(which based on my hazy recollection had already been closed). The end
  result looked like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage$ cd app

  output of 'history|tail':

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage$ cd app
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/dev/manage/app$ fgrep -r * | grep

[Bug 222940] [NEW] HP laserjet only prints the top of the page from Ecinve/Firefox, 8.04

2008-04-27 Thread kex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

when printing from Evince or directly from Firefox, HP laserjet 1160 only
prints the top of the page. Then a couple of strange marks and the rest of the
page is empty. Disabling AppArmor seems to help (the audit message in the end)

The task is left to the printer queue after that.

[Bug 222939] Re: Driver nVidia GeForce 8400M GS (rev a1) Fails in Hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Félim Whiteley
Ok having restarted to switch back to Nvidia driver, grab the logfile
and restart X again, when back in vesa mode the top of the screen is
corrupted with a black bar approx 2cm in thickness with flecks of
Magenta through it, then also the screen is shifted approx 1/3 to the
right, with the rightmost portion of the screen appearing on the left
side now. On a full restart of the machine the issue is resolved,
restarting X does not solve it.

Attaching 3 files, my Xorg.conf then 2 logfiles, the one with
"Switch_Back_To_Vesa" is where it was booted up with Nvidia enabled then
edited the xorg.conf and switched to Vesa and got the corruption above.

[Bug 177518] Re: opengl total freeze using DRI with intel 945 graphics chip

2008-04-27 Thread aaronetz
I've just upgraded to Hardy, and the bug occurs there, although it seems that
the fix for this bug has been released.
Is this fix already included in Hardy?

[Bug 222803] Re: Java broken in openoffice hardy

2008-04-27 Thread Youssef
well i have openoffice.org-java-common installed, it has been since i
was on gutsy. But it seems the upgrade just let it sit there without any
update, you are right to fix the problem we need to figure out why it's
not upgrading the file.

btw i think you didn't have the problem because it happens only on

[Bug 220722] Re: [hardy] OOo Base will not connect to MySQL using JDBC

2008-04-27 Thread MichaelE
Perfect, I can confirm that this solves the problem for my
installations:

1.) Delete user-config for java by deleting the file following for each
user

 $ rm ~/.openoffice.org2/user/config/javasettings*

2.) Each user has to start OpenOffice and set the JRE in
Tools-->Options-->Java

Then everything works as it should.

Problem has been confirmed by multiple users upgrading from 7.10 to
8.04. Work-around is available, but root-cause is unknown.

[Bug 214984] Re: keyboard layout broken if restart without usb keyboard

2008-04-27 Thread Dieter P
I just did a full reinstall. I installed hardy from the alternate CD
(amd64) on LVM volumes on an encrypted partition.

I still have the same problem : the keyboard of the macbook works fine when
entering the password for the encrypted volume and when logging in, but shows
the same weird characters while in X.
When i switch to a virtual console with ctrl+alt+Fx it works fine again
So it's apparently only in X, although I don't see anything wrong with the
xorg.conf:

-xorg.conf snippet--

No. Ip-filter update works fine on Hardy. No problems at all.

[Bug 222914] Re: Nvidia (new) driver not loaded

2008-04-27 Thread Alberto Milone
The module is loaded however the driver says that:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

This means that it's not EnvyNG's fault. Your card is supported by that driver
therefore I think you should ask here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s&forumid=14

NVIDIA will help you there
