[Bug 1756261] [NEW] reseed landscape in 18.04
Public bug reported: After Wily landscape was taken out of the default installs for dragging in too much of python2 dependencies. But recently landscape is now on python3 and back then the plan was to bring it back in when that happens. It was discussed by the product stakeholders and decided to do so. I wanted to document some details in the bug to refer to them from the seed entry. In the past (pre Xenial) there were more components than today: * landscape-client - was in the cloud-image (and pulled in landscape-common by dependencies) * landscape-common - was in the default server install * landscape-client - was on the Server ISO to install along landscape-common off the disk * landscape-client-ui-install - was on the Desktop These days there only are (both in main already) * landscape-client * landscape-common We do not want to touch the Desktop case, but now that it is py3 it should be back on the server. I discussed the details and we want: * landscape-common - installed in cloud-image and default server install * landscape-client - available from the ISO But while py3 means it will not pull in "all of py2" it still hase py3 dependencies that would not be needed without any dependencies. It will drag in some python packages still. The following analysis was done with landscape-common 18.01-0ubuntu2 as it is in bionic today and a fresh clean cloud-image as well as lxd container. In both it will additionally bring in: The following NEW packages will be installed: bc landscape-common python3-attr python3-automat python3-click python3-colorama python3-constantly python3-hyperlink python3-incremental python3-openssl python3-pam python3-pyasn1 python3-pyasn1-modules python3-service-identity python3-twisted python3-twisted-bin python3-zope.interface That will be 15.6 MB of additional disk space (after install). This will be ~the amount the cloud image qcow grows, but will be less in the compressed form of the lxd image. I can prep the seed changes, but need two acks to be sure: 1. a confirm that this really is exactly the change we want 2. that the extra dependencies that will be installed were considered when the decision to bring it back was made ** Affects: landscape-client (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1756261 Title: reseed landscape in 18.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/landscape-client/+bug/1756261/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've done all the above previously and have done all the above just now. Still no audio on this PC for mp3 files using vlc, but audio Ok on other very similar (both barebones Intel with same memory) PC with same software (i.e. Ubuntu 16.04, vlc). Other (new) PC had recent install from 16.04.3 and uses ppa for get_iplayer resulting in libav packages (as discussed previously) being from that ppa. [Bug 1756261] Re: reseed landscape in 18.04
@Andreas - thanks for the mail clarification on landscape package history. The needed seed change will be: - server - add landscape common - (cloud-image implicitly pulls in the ubuntu-server meta package) - (landscape-client is already in server-ship so both are on the ISO) So the change itself is minimal and consists of: === modified file 'server' --- server 2018-03-07 17:32:29 + +++ server 2018-03-16 07:00:35 + @@ -64,3 +64,4 @@ * s390-tools [s390x] # needed for z block devices, bootloader, encryption features, etc. * gnupg * dirmngr + * landscape-common # LP: #1756261 And a follow on update on ubuntu-meta to update the "ubuntu-server" package. [Bug 1605861] Re: apt-key output should not be parsed (stdout is not a terminal)
apt-key was changed in Debian Stretch to warn when you attempt to do something like apt-key add /dev/null or the equivalent pipeline. The manual page says COMMANDS add filename (...) Note: Instead of using this command a keyring should be placed directly in the /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ directory with a descriptive name and either "gpg" or "asc" as file extension. So, the right thing to do is to copy the file to the right path instead of calling apt-key add with it. ^ I got the above snippet from the very tangentially related https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=851774 ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #851774 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=851774 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1605861 Title: apt-key output should not be parsed (stdout is not a terminal) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-properties/+bug/1605861/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Later I realized there was something wrong with the alt-tab switcher: There were two alt-tab overlays, so I installed compizconfig-settings-manager and found 'Application Switcher' plugin was also enabled. I disabled that and everything is fine now. I have attached a screenshot. OK, next idea: You seem to have config files from the old version of pulse still installed: ii libpulse0:amd64 1:8.0-0ubuntu3.8 amd64PulseAudio client libraries rc libpulse0:i3861:8.0-0ubuntu3.7 i386 PulseAudio client libraries It's also from the wrong architecture (i386). So this means your current version might not work properly and/or your testing of the previous version might have been flawed since the wrong architecture was installed at some point... Please: 1. Purge the old config files: sudo dpkg -P libpulse0:i386 2. Reboot and retest. [Bug 1756298] [NEW] missing xubuntu session
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm running a 18.04 alpha/beta from the daily builds to test some things, thus started with the default new ubuntu (gnome) desktop. When I install lubuntu-desktop, I get new session types like LXDE and Lubuntu, which I can choose at login time from the gdm session chooser (gear- wheel symbol). But when I install xubuntu-desktop, I don't get new session types. [Bug 1753430] Re: virtualbox-guest-utils.service not starting
I have now done clean installs of 16.04, installed the virtualbox-guest packages then upgraded to 18.04. In all cases the 16.04 install worked. When adding the guest packages I received the messages similar to: vboxguest: Running module version sanity check. Error! Module version 5.0.40_Ubuntu for vboxguest.ko is not newer than what is already found in kernel 4.13.0-36-generic (5.1.28_Ubuntu). You may override by specifying --force. However everything worked fine at 16.04. I then ran the upgrade to 18.04. In each case the guest packages were removed during the upgrade so I then reinstalled them. The reinstalls had various results. Kubuntu, Ubuntu - All OK. Lubuntu - reinstall failed as follows: Setting up virtualbox-guest-dkms (5.2.8-dfsg-2) ... The logs really have no info about what happened on upgrade. But if that is reproducible you should be able to run e.g. $ sudo apt install --reinstall samba That should trigger the error again and after that the logs should hold some info why they failed to start. TL;DR: 1. $ sudo apt install --reinstall samba 2. [Bug 1688018] Re: DNS server from vpn connection is not being used after network-manager upgrade to 1.2.6
Almost year old bug still there. This is core functionality of any OS (secure VPNs, DNS) which just does not work on Ubuntu. I don't know how about other distros but I doubt that Ubuntu can claim to be the desktop system with such a bug. I can confirm that the simplest workaround is comment out dnsmasq in NetworkManager config (ubuntu 16.04). But there are drawbacks of course so this makes the system less secure/reliable in some situations. And of course it took me about 5 hours to figure out what is going on. Those hours could be spend more productive.
