[Bug 305842] [NEW] problem missing install file libgcj.so.81

2008-12-06 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

not really sure where the problem is, but there's no libgcj.so.81 after
installing this package.
Then gij-4.2.4 (and several other gcj-related packages) won't install (and in
the end I can't install eclipse-gcj):

(from apt-get install)
  ...
  Setting up gij-4.2 (4.2.4-3ubuntu3) ...
gcj-dbtool-4.2: error while loading shared libraries: libgcj.so.81:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
  ...

I tried making a soft link to libgcj.so.81.0.0, but then gij-4.2
installation gets a segmentation fault.

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-16 Thread Andrew Kay
I haven't tried ocelot yet, but on Natty it is only a problem with Unity
-- ie going back to gnome removes the problem.

When you look at the output from xinput it seems (and I'm not
experienced here) that the driver is generating the right combination of
ups and downs.

So it seems to be some interaction between unity and some strange
assumption that gimp is making (because I haven't seen any complaints
about similar applications)

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-12-27 Thread Andrew Kay
I tried to do some more work this time using Gimp 2.7.3 (compiled myself on
Xubuntu 11.10 from some instructions)
And using my Wacom intuos 3.

I can confirm that both bugs are still there:

- sometimes you make a stroke , but you might have just as well stayed
in bed, because gimp won't move the tool

- sometimes you get a stray point (x = 0 or y = 0) added to your stroke,
resulting in long horizontal or diagonal splodges where you don't want
'em (some kind of race condition I expect)

I'm using vanilla Xubuntu, so there's just xfce4 its desktop - no
unity/metacity/...

[Bug 882817] Re: shutdown screen stuck after upgrade to Ubuntu 11.10

2011-12-20 Thread Andrew Kay
MORE DATA!

I'm also having the won't power down problem -- FAIL message in red
on the console. Xubuntu 64 bit, Oneiric 11.10

I use an edimax USB wireless dongle.

However, when I switched to a TP-LINK TL-WN321G (stolen from my other
near-identical machine, which doesn't have the problem) the problem went
away.

I don't have any network drives. Just starting up ubuntu with the edimax
plugged in (and connecting automatically to my WPA network) is enough to
cause the shutdown problem.

Works: (TP-LINK)
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 148f:2070 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2070 Wireless
Adapter

Doesn't Work: (EDIMAX)
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573
Wireless Adapter

Is this helpful?

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-24 Thread Andrew Kay
upgraded to oneiric ocelot 11.10 (what ARE the Ubuntu people of power
thinking about these days?)

with Unity2D the gimp problem is different (but equally crippling) --
Wacom Intuos 3: when I touch the pad to introduce a stroke (eg brush or
eraser), the gimp appears often to get a signal to draw in the top left
hand corner, or sometimes on the left edge, so I end up with a long
diagonal line or horizontal line, terminating at the real pen position.

Naturally this makes gimp unusable.

Maybe it is relevant that I have the windows set so that focus follows
the cursor, something that makes gimp MUCH nicer to use than it is on a
windows-style click-to-focus. I don't think the Unity team really
understand this mode.

I haven't yet tried with the gnome shell.

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-24 Thread Andrew Kay
thanks Chris -- though the reason I think it's the same bug is that the
solution is the same, ie go back to gnome desktop. I've now tested it
and it works pretty well on gnome.

(Actually, I still saw the sudden leap to x=0 or y=0 once or twice in
hundreds of test strokes -- it must be some kind of race condition)

(I just get the impression that Unity is nowhere near ready to use for
the mainstream. I don't think any of the features are particularly
helpful, and there are so many things that seem harder to do. As you
say, eventually things will be sorted out. Meanwhile, I just want to get
on with using the computer to create stuff...!)

cheers
Andrew

[Bug 786317] Re: wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-10-25 Thread Andrew Kay
I'll have to get back to you on these. I'm still using gimp 2.6, mainly
out of cowardice.

meanwhile, I don't know the difference between gnome gnome shell ubuntu
classic unity compiz metacity
-- some of them are window managers, some are something else. It's confusing
and I haven't seen anything that clearly explains what is what or the official
way to choose between them in ubuntu. I followed some instructions, but I
don't know now whether I have gnome or gnome shell...

Andrew

I have same problem.

Effect starts eg viewing a youtube video, then the video bleeds through

Killing firefox doesn't clear the buffer. Reboot does.

[Bug 786317] [NEW] wacom intuous3 often fails to draw stroke (release click not recognised?)

2011-05-21 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gimp

It appears that sometimes when the pen is lifted a button up command is
somehow not sent to gimp.
This is new in Natty (it all worked beautifully in Maverick)

gimp 2.6.11,
ubuntu natty
Wacom intuous3 6x8

To reproduce:
make sure you have selected wacom as extended input device. Press P to paint.
Make a stroke. Very often (but not always) at the end of the stroke when the
pen is lifted the paint cursor remains at the end of the stroke and does not
follow the pointer. It's necessary to click again (anywhere, or with any
button) to get the cursor following the pointer again before you can draw
another stroke. This makes gimp unusable.

[Bug 678183] Re: audio-only playback always stops after 1.5 minutes on any file types

2010-11-22 Thread Andrew Kay
thaks Rémi. Here's some more data.

Failure occurs on both mp3 and ogg, and today I found it is the same on
a commercial DVD -- sound stops 1:29 into episode (but video continues
perfectly). I've had this setup working perfectly in all Ubuntu
releases since Intrepid Ibex, but it stopped recently, perhaps after I
installed Maverick (not sure when it stopped, though)

1) also today, discovered a work around: change default audio output
settings in preferences from Alsa to OSS, and now it appears to be fine.
Maybe I broke it myself earlier? but why would it stop so repeatably at
1:29?

2) issued pulseaudio -kill and checked it was gone with ps -aef, set
VLS back to ALSA, but the problem returns.

3) tried to get a log file (this doesn't seem to work), and turned up the
verbosity. The timing error messages main audio output warning started at
about the time the sound stopped, and would have continued except that I
stopped it.
How do I get a debug log?

[Bug 678183] Re: audio-only playback always stops after 1.5 minutes on any file types

2010-11-22 Thread Andrew Kay
thanks again -- now tried Pulsaudio output setting, and it works on my
test file too. Maybe the problem is that I changed the settings at one
point (I was fooling around with the Jack demon at the time) and didn't
know what was the correct default.

summary: works with Pulsaudio and with OSS. doesn't work with straight
ALSA.

[Bug 674720] [NEW] pulsaudio module not loading alsa card, playback stops after a time

2010-11-12 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

noticed in vlc, after opening and playing audio file, playback stops
after a minute or two. Happens on each file. Can be restarted by
pressing play again, or by seeking.

I'm reporting this under pulseaudio because of the large number of messages in

2010-05-20 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

installed Lucid. system up-to-date at 2010-5-20
previously (ie karmic) fully working external USB DVD.

now, if DVD is not connected at boot time but connected later, drive is
not available to mount, even though lsusb can see the drive.

if DVD _is_ connected at boot time, everything appears to work

thanks

sometimes it's possible to enter Note mode while there's still a rectangular
selection box active, especially if the box is in the bar after the last real
note. If you try to insert a note by clicking, the program disappears in a
 puff of logic.

You can even do this on an empty stave.

(and would it be possible to add a feature to autosave work to a new file
when the thing is in the process of crashing?)

[Bug 1008933] [NEW] gphoto2 brings down network card on camera file deletion

2012-06-05 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

this has happened for the last few versions of (x)ubuntu, still exists
in 12.04.

gphoto2 talks to canon 40D over USB in PTP mode. Most things work, but
delete file (-d) or any command leading to a delete (eg --capture-
image-and-upload) will fail catastrophically:

* the operation does not wok
* gphoto2 will not work again
* weirdly my wifi USB card stops working and won't be coaxed back into life
without a reboot.

I get the same problem deleting a file on the camera using gphotofs

Today I found a fix -- fetched libgphoto2-2.4.14 and gphoto2-2.4.14 from
sources and compiled (against libusb-1.0.0)
and I can cheerfully delete files without destroying my network.

I don't understand the procedures involved, but can we please get this version
of libgphoto2 into (x)ubuntu?
thanks

[Bug 1336214] [NEW] pygame.surfarray.make_surface(numpyarray) gives IndexError

2014-07-01 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Feeding a numpy array to make_surface gives an error:

to reproduce:
$ python
 import numpy

 import pygame

 a = numpy.zeros((10,20,3), numpy.uint8)

 pygame.SurfaceArray.make_surface(a)

output:

IndexError: bytes to write exceed buffer size
expected:
Surface(10x20x32) SW)

Stepping through inside, it seems that the buffer has the right size,
and the data is the right length at the point the buffer write occurs.
But the buffer write fails (and I can't step that)

I'm 99% certain that this worked before I upgraded from Kubuntu 13.10 to
14.04

This problem doesn't occur if I build pygame myself.

So is there some problem with the packaging?

please?

[Bug 1338959] [NEW] guvcview exported jpeg file incorrect

2014-07-08 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

I have a logitech C920 webcam, and Kubuntu 14.04LTS, arch x86_64

png files are saved correctly.

When I try to save a snapshot image with guvcview in jpeg format, the
file is malformed

(specifically, gwenview says

gwenview(29407) Gwenview::JPEGErrorManager::errorExitCallBack: Quantization
table 0x00 was not defined
gwenview(29407): libjpeg error in src

but I can't open the file in irfanview either, so I think it is the file
that is at fault.)

steps to reproduce:
start guvcview
go to menu photofile, and choose jpg file output
in main panel click cap. image
quit guvcview and attempt to open image file.

expect: to see image
actual: image will not load (incorrect format)

[Bug 1552230] [NEW] gdb man page doesn't mention option "--args"

2016-03-02 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

gdb manpage doesn't list --args as a possible command line argument.

This very important option allows one to pass an executable name with
/its/ command line, and is possibly one of the most generally useful of
gdb's arguments. It is documented in the info file, but unaccountably
missing from the man page.

[Bug 1823346] [NEW] SD card stays locked even when unlocked

2019-04-05 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
Release:18.04

After card reader device is used with write-protected SD card, write-
protection incorrectly persists to future SD cards, even non-protected
ones.

To reproduce:
1) Insert non-protected SD card in card reader (confirm system normal):
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
 /dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  0 (off)
[result is correct]

2) Eject card, set physical lock on side of card, reinsert:
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
/dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  1 (on)
[result is correct - card read-only]

3) Eject card again, unlock card, reinsert
$ sudo hdparm -r /dev/sdd
/dev/sdd:
  readonly  =  1 (on)
[result is **incorrect** (card still locked)]

Because the lock is still set, the device always appears read-only.
(For example, I cannot "dd" to /dev/sdd)

Workaround:
after removing the locked card, issue "sudo hdparm -r0" to turn off the lock.
Then insert the unlocked card and the device will appear read/write.

(I don't know if this is the right package to report against.)

after locking the screen with ctl-alt-l the keyboard state changes to
something strange.

I usually leave the keypad in the non-num-lock mode, so that eg "2" maps
to up-arrow (otherwise my keyboard has no dedicated arrow keys, so this
is important.)

During lock (eg at the password screen) the num-lock seems to be engaged
automatically, and I think 2 maps to 2 again (which isn't a problem.)

However, after unlock "2" maps to something odd, neither "2" nor "up".
I have to press num-lock TWICE to get back to my preferred no-num-lock
state. This is wrong.

The problem is similar with all the keypad keys, "2" is just an example.

The arrow mode is something built-in to my Quick-fire cooler master cm-storm
keyboard, it's not something I hacked myself.
This behaviour appeared after I performed LTS upgrade from Xubuntu 16.04 to
Xubuntu 18.04

I'm guessing this is the right package to report, as xscreensaver is not
installed, and flock tries first xscreensaver-command and then "light-
locker-command --lock"

[Bug 1815730] Re: keyboard state scrambled after unlock

2019-02-15 Thread Andrew Kay
Yes, exactly it. Remove the file, reboot, problem goes away. Replace
the file, reboot, problem comes back.

Thanks (and that's my workaround for now.)

[Bug 1823346] Re: SD card stays locked even when unlocked

I'm sorry, I don't know. I don't use the card lock often at all.

[Bug 1824169] [NEW] krdc asks for unspecified password when reconnecting

2019-04-10 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

If I quit krdc without disconnecting sessions (eg by logging out of
xubuntu), then when I restart krdc it tries to restart the session (I
don't think it should, but that's not the bug), and correctly asks me
for a password.

However, it doesn't specify the host when asking for the password.
Since I connect to different hosts and I don't always remember which one
I used last, I may type the wrong password (ie from a different host.)
This seems like a security problem, as well as an inconvenience.

I would expect the password dialogue to include the identity of the host
system.

[Bug 1823346] Re: SD card stays locked even when unlocked

2019-04-09 Thread Andrew Kay
Sorry, trying to follow your instructions, but some competency problems
here:

I did install and test with v5.1-rc4 kernel. Behaviour is exactly the same.
(oddly, this was the easy bit.)

Finally worked out how to add a tag.

But now:
1) my dmesg appears to be broken with this kernel. Just hundreds of lines all
saying the same, eg:

[ 693.835558] cma: cma_alloc: alloc failed, req-size: 1 pages, ret: -12

and 3) bug already says "confirmed"

I'm confused.

[Bug 1862451] [NEW] Dolphin (file manager) renaming other files when copying a file

2020-02-08 Thread Andrew Kay
Public bug reported:

I opened Dolphin in a directory with a lot of large (video) files. I
then created another Dolphin window of another directory (on the same
file system.) I proceeded to move files from one to the other. Because
the pop-up menu gets old quickly I held down Shift to make sure I got
move behaviour without the pop-up.

Expected Result: The file "old/A.mp4" is moved to "new/".
Actual Result: The file "old/A.mp4" is correctly moved to "new/A.mp4"
But in addition, some random "old/B.mp4" has been silently renamed
"old/A.mp4"

This happened twice. I've "refreshed" dolphin and it seems the change
is real in the filesystem, not just an error in the display.

I believe this is a serious bug, as it has result in data loss (ie the
file B has lost its name)

Workaround: just use the pop-up menu
