OpenSSH sets the IPv4 ToS (Type of Service) byte to low delay or max
throughput depending on the situation, but does not set the equivalent
IPv6 Traffic Class byte.  As far as I understand, these two bytes are

In an environment with a number of Ubuntu servers, it is common (here,
anyway) for a user to only run byobu on one of them, from which ssh
connections to the other servers are maintained -- ssh from one server
to another will take up another two lines of the terminal and provide
confusing nested windows.  Whilst I agree that it would be good to make
this feature more discoverable, I do not think that enabling byobu by
default is a good idea, for this reason and those presented in comment
#1.

 access to the root user as well because when they log
 in as me, byobu-launcher will attach them to the existing
 session which is currently sitting in a root shell.

Good point in that byobu does effectively subvert the per-tty tickets of
sudo: a byobu session will contain a persistent tty and thus sudo
tickets will be shared amongst separate ssh connections.

However I have never quite been convinced by sudo's security model in
this regard (and this is equivalent to the scenario you present where a
root shell is left open inside byobu): if someone gains access to a
sysadmin's personal account, it is a simple matter for the attacker to
surreptitiously install hooks such that the next time the sysadmin
elevates to root (via sudo, or su, or anything else) the attacker
elevates to root too.

So in my opinion byobu bypasses a bogus security feature... maybe this
makes things slightly easier for the attacker but not considerably so.

 The other concern I have has to do w/ automation. I
 could imagine some organization has written a set of
 expect scripts (why!?)

I echo the (why!?) -- running expect on a shell is pretty bizaare and
not something I would worry about.  Shell scripts are a much saner
approach and if invoked sensibly, e.g.

  ssh u...@host some-remote-script.sh

or even like

  ssh u...@host  some-local-script.sh

byobu will not be invoked as bash will not be running interactively and
so .bash_profile will not be sourced.

(NB: these opinions are entirely mine and I certainly don't speak for
the byobu maintainers or Ubuntu.)

There's a race in chvt (see my comment at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kbd/+bug/1351564/comments/4)
which may be to blame.  I suspect something on my system (Nvidia
driver?) is almost always winning this race, so chvt almost always
blocks and I can't suspend.

Perhaps pm-utils should use another more-reliable way of blanking the
screen?

I too see this bug, on upgrading to hardy on my rather minimal (non-
GNOME) system on which I still run gnome-settings-daemon in order that
my settings will be applied to GTK apps.

If I visit a HTTPS site and click the favicon by the URL bar, the pop-up
balloon containing information about the SSL certificate appears to
always display exactly the last two levels of the domain name only.
This results in misleading/useless information in some cases, especially
for domains in countries where the TLD is subdivided (co.uk/org.uk
etc.).  E.g.:

https://www.bethere.co.uk/ has CN=www.bethere.co.uk, and is displayed as You 
are connected to co.uk
https://csg.trinhall.cam.ac.uk/ has CN=csg.trinhall.cam.ac.uk, and is displayed 
as You are connected to ac.uk
https://control.retrosnub.co.uk/ has CN=*.retrosnub.co.uk, and is displayed as 
You are connected to co.uk
https://www.zipzap.co.nz/ has CN=www.zipzap.co.nz and is displayed as You are 
connected to co.nz

I would argue that it's dangerous to strip any parts of the domain name
in this information, as it's a generalisation which won't necessarily be
always valid, even if it's done more intelligently than it currently is.

I'm using firefox-3.0 version 3.0~b3+nobinonly-0ubuntu4 in hardy amd64.

[Bug 184719] vim uses ./$TMPDIR (literally, not expanded) as temporary directory

If the TMPDIR environment variable is *not* set, vim will attempt to
create temporary files in ./$TMPDIR (a literal directory name containing
a dollar sign, not an environment variable expansion).  It should
instead try /tmp if TMPDIR is not set.

Implications:
1. If ./$TMPDIR exists, vim may issue an error message on startup (see below);
2. If vim is started in a directory such as an autofs mountpoint in which any 
requested directory will exist, vim hangs forever trying to create temporary 
directories waiting until it finds one that does not exist.

This latter case, although quite rare, is the one which alerted me to
the problem; I observed the following strace excerpt:

I have reproduced the problem in a more conventional directory:

From a brief look through the source, I believe that this is due to a
fault in the expand_env_esc function in src/misc1.c: as far as I can
tell, when expanding a string containing $FOO when environment
variable FOO is unset or empty, $FOO will remain in the string.  (The
call to vim_getenv on line 3609 will return NULL if the variable
requested is unset/empty, and NULL in *var will cause the conditional
starting on line 3739 to fail and hence $FOO will not be replaced in the
string.)

expand_env_esc is called via expand_env from src/fileio.c:6762, which
iterates through the tempdirs array until it finds one which exists;
tempdirs is initialised from the macro TEMPDIRNAMES, which is defined
(on UNIX) to be $TMPDIR, /tmp, ., $HOME.

I'm running vim 1:7.1-056+2ubuntu2 from gutsy.

This corroborates uwe's comment that something is going wrong in the
session handling code.

The problem occurs due to 204-start-session-cookies.patch: the change at line

These are standard debs from the gutsy-security repository.

A variety of different scripts are crashing, including phpMyAdmin,
Gallery, MediaWiki, etc.

There are several pertinent crash reports in /var/crash but
unfortunately they're likely to contain user data (MySQL passwords etc.)

contain such data, bear with me...

I'll try rebuilding those two modules and let you know what happens.

My configuration is essentially the same as yours (I removed the Alias
line from /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf and used a symlink instead, but I
doubt that affects the bug).  What arch are you using -- perhaps the bug
only manifests itself on amd64?

I did also find that certain things would cause the bug to disappear
temporarily, e.g. I could not reproduce the bug running php5-cgi under
gdb.

I agree: when I adjust the backlight brightness using the hotkeys (on my
HP 2510p) the setting is completely forgotten as soon as the system goes
idle, which is somewhat irritating.

A simple(?) fix could perhaps be to have the backlight hotkeys also
update gnome-power-manager's default backlight level for AC or battery
as appropriate.

Same on a HP 2510p (intermittently, possibly timing-dependent).

Matthew Garrett tells me that you can work around it by adding a script
to /etc/acpi/suspend.d that saves the value in
/sys/class/backlight/whatever/brightness and one in resume.d that writes
it back (do this after the video reinit stuff but before
65-console.sh).  Presumably it would be harmless to add such a script
to the package to catch the various cases where this doesn't happen
automatically.

This causes my wireless PCMCIA card not to work.

Using the p54pci driver, I get:

/etc/init.d/apache2 does a grep ^PidFile /etc/apache2/* -r.  It is not
uncommon for there to exist a symlink from /etc/apache2/logs to
/var/log/apache2: this causes that invocation of grep to scan through
all of Apache's log files.  On my web server there are several gigabytes
of these, causing /etc/init.d/apache2 stop during shutdown to take a
very long time.

I suggest not following symlinks, for starters, using something like
this instead perhaps:

find /etc/apache2/ -type f -print0 | xargs -0 grep ^PidFile

Or ideally being more intelligent about which files to look at, e.g.
*.conf...

[Bug 364094] [NEW] glibc does not understand DNAME (RFC 2672) DNS records

When attempting to resolve a DNS name abstracted via a DNAME record (see
RFC 2672), glibc's stub resolver:

(1) logs, via syslog, a debug message:

(2) ignores the DNAME record;

(3) falls back to the synthesised CNAME record inserted by my BIND 9
recursive resolver.

RFC 2672 states that a DNS server SHOULD synthesise CNAME records where
a DNAME exists in response to DNS clients sending Extended DNS [EDNS0]
queries with Version 0 or non-extended queries, which are presumed not
to understand the semantics of the DNAME record, so step (3) above is
valid in the interim until full DNAME support is implemented in glibc.
However in this case the debug message is irrelevant, and as DNAME
records become more widespread will result in needless log spam (e.g.
Cambridge University is soon to roll out DNAME records for reverse DNS).

Suggestion: only log a debug message if the answer contains a DNAME
record but no CNAME record (i.e. the DNS server has not synthesised a
CNAME record).  Alternatively, skip the debug message entirely for DNAME
records.

glibc-2.9/resolv/nss_dns/dns-host.c (2.9-4ubuntu6).

On my system (a Xen virtual machine running karmic and acting as an NFS
client), I see the following during boot:

init: statd pre-start process (831) terminated with status 1
mountall: Event failed

Enabling console output in /etc/init/statd.conf shows that the error is
caused by statd's pre-start script attempting to start portmap when it
is already started.  The pre-start script tries to avoid this by
checking portmap's status:

status portmap | grep -q start/running || start portmap

However adding debug statements showed that portmap's status at this
point was start/spawned rather than start/running.  I.e. portmap was
already in the process of being started but was not yet running.

Simply changing that line to

status portmap | grep -q start/ || start portmap

solved the problem for me.

I suspect the problem to be lines 116-119 of maildrop/configure.in:

This check was added since the version of courier in hardy and appears
to disable authlib support if maildrop is being built as part of the
courier package (as it is here, before being split out into separate
packages).  I'm not sure why it does this!

In current karmic I'm getting these warnings pop up every minute or so,
for a few read-only NFS filesystems.  As Steve said, it is useless to
provide warnings for filesystems to which the user cannot write (nor
indeed can anyone else on the system, in this case).  And I'm not sure
why they're popping up unreasonably frequently... if you need more info
to debug this, let me know.

When shutting down my feisty system, networking is brought down too
early: specifically, before NFS mounts are umounted.

This causes quotaoff (called by /etc/rc0.d/K85quota) to hang for a long
while as it tries to investigate NFS mounts which are no longer
reachable.

I use network-manager, in case this is relevant.

This turned out to be a XenServer bug related to the interaction between
blkback and barriers; my contact at Citrix has produced a dom0 kernel
patch which fixes the issue.  I'm told the fix will be incorporated in
the next point release of XenServer.

This bug is more serious than I thought.  It appears that because of the
aforementioned apt bug (it sometimes never exits when invoked from one
of the cron.daily scripts), anacron has not run any jobs on my system
for the past month.

This is not a good failure mode.  It would be much more safe for anacron
to be allowed to start on subsequent days (perhaps killing it if it is
still going 24 hours later) to minimise the number of jobs missed.  For
example, this seems to be an improvement:

Of course, the underlying apt bug should be fixed too, but this will
allow anacron to recover from this and other bugs.

Firefox has an optional feature whereby the URL in the clipboard will be
loaded on middle-click.  Although I accept the reasoning behind this
being turned off by default (bug 353318), I prefer it turned on.  It
used to be the case that one could turn it on by visiting about:config
and setting middlemouse.contentLoadURL to true.  However, the Ubuntu
Firefox Modifications addon which is installed in Firefox by default
disables this setting persistently (at least on restart, probably more
often than that).  I can only enable this feature permanently if I
remove or disable the Ubuntu Firefox Modifications addon.

This behaviour happens in at least Ubuntu 11.04, in Firefox 5 and 6.  It
may have been ongoing for longer;

has been happening since Ubuntu 10.10 and/or Firefox 4.

Could this addon please not interfere with this setting if it has been
changed by the user?

amongst this data since the root fs journal had already been aborted by
this point (apport-collect only worked after mounting a tmpfs over
/root!).

[Bug 877453] [NEW] rlinetd's update-inetd fails if invoked from a maint script using debconf

When upgrading to oneiric with sane-utils and rlinetd installed:


Setting up sane-utils (1.0.22-2ubuntu2) ...
*** WARNING: ucf was run from a maintainer script that uses debconf, but
 the script did not pass --debconf-ok to ucf. The maintainer
 script should be fixed to not stop debconf before calling ucf,
 and pass it this parameter. For now, ucf will revert to using
 old-style, non-debconf prompting. Ugh!
 
 Please inform the package maintainer about this problem.

dpkg: error processing sane-utils (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2


The problem is that sane-utils.postinst activates debconf and then calls 
update-inetd, which in turn calls ucf in an unsupported way.  As it is, I 
cannot upgrade to oneiric with rlinetd and any package with a similar postinst 
script to that of sane-utils installed.

For the record I've just tested linux-
image-3.2.0-030200rc2-generic_3.2.0-030200rc2.20151435 and the bug
is still present.  This is still on XenServer 5.6 SP2; I'll try to test
on a XS 6 install later.  (Lucid does work on both versions; the problem
is only with Oneiric.)

Stefan: I hadn't spotted the capacity change discrepancy, but on my
latest test with the above kernel I do get capacity change messages for
all three disks:

[0.496794] blkfront: xvdb: barrier: enabled
[0.498990]  xvdb: unknown partition table
[0.499217] Setting capacity to 524288

[0.501937]  xvdc: unknown partition table
[0.502127] Setting capacity to 12582912
[0.502136] xvdb: detected capacity change from 0 to 6442450944
[0.507102] Setting capacity to 1024000
[0.507117] xvdc: detected capacity change from 0 to 524288000

These disks are all XenServer's NFS-backed virtual disks.  The bug does
NOT occur if the root filesystem is on local storage.

Correction -- the bug DOES *sometimes* occur if the root filesystem is
on local storage.  On local storage, the bug has so far occurred on
three out of six boot attempts.  I have yet to see a successful boot on
NFS storage.

This is a serious regression.

My testing suggests that this issue affects any guest which is assigned
more than 578MB of RAM.  (A guest configured in XenCenter with 579MB of
RAM exhibits the fault, whereas the same guest reconfigured with 578MB
boots fine.)

Victor, can you check whether reducing its RAM allocation allows your
guest to boot?

The failure mode is that the guest spins on 100% CPU on the first core,
before any kernel messages are printed (even without the quiet
option).

linux-image-server (64-bit) or linux-image-generic-pae (32-bit) in lucid
work just fine paravirtualised in Xen domU.

Admittedly the existence of a -virtual kernel is somewhat misleading in
this case, but the paravirtualised kernels do exist.
