[Bug 486837] [NEW] Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic
Public bug reported: I did a standard dist-upgrade from jaunty to karmic. I have a nvidia graphic card and was using the standard proprietary drivers (proposed by jockey-gtk), and with desktop effects activated. Since the upgrade, I experience freezes that seem to be related to this proprietary driver : - whenever I hibernate the PC, and start it again, the boot seems fine, but the screen stays blank after the resume - the system freezes after a few minutes watching any flash video content (with the proprietary flash) I'm using version 185.18.36-0ubuntu9 of nvidia-glx-185. Both problems are solved if I disable this proprietary driver through jockey-gtk. I ran two tests : - upgrade to version 190.42 of the drivers (by adding the ppa deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main ) - keep version 185.18.36 and disable desktop effects In both cases, the freezes are still there. The only workaround I found to avoid them was to disable the proprietary driver I found this bug : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/474917 but it does not seem to be a duplicate, as my dkms status reports : nvidia, 185.18.36, 2.6.31-14-generic, i686: installed I did not find anything relevant in /var/log about these freezes ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The version of adobe-flashplugin I use is 10.0.32.18-1karmic2, within firefox 3.5.5. The freezes make the computer completely unresponsive : the mouse does not move, ctrl-alt-F1 does nothing. I forgot to mention that everything was fine before upgrading to karmic (at least for flash videos, I did not use the hibernate feature at that time). The flash video does not necessarily have to be in fullscreen mode. And it works for a few minutes before freezing the system. -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 486837] Re: Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic
I was hoping that the recent kernel upgrade (to 2.6.31-15) could help with this issue. It does not : still the same freezes with flash videos. I can reproduce that easily : - activate nvidia proprietary drivers - open a flash video, for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENMKaeCU and watch it in full screen mode - after a few minutes, the freeze happens and all you can do is manually reboot the computer -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Watching the same youtube video from Totem works without freezing. Same thing for another fullscreen streaming video with VLC : no freeze. I reproduced the same problem on a ubuntu 9.10 liveCD : After booting on the liveCD, I installed version 185 of the nvidia proprietary drivers, as proposed a few seconds after the boot. Then, I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package (in order to have the proprietary flash plugin). I launched firefox, and opened the link above (Home movie in youtube) : the computer froze after a few minutes playing the movie. [Bug 435190] Re: Disk wakes up every 30 minutes and produces errors on dmesg
It looks like the patch works for me too. My second hard disk (Western Digital WD2000JD of 200Gb) was constantly spinning up and down since the upgrade to karmic. I had modified /etc/hdparm.conf so that this disk spins down automatically after a few minutes. It worked great with jaunty, with the hard disk spinninp up only when I wanted to access it. After the upgrade, it was periodically spinning up, even if I did not access to the hard disk at all. I found this bug and installed the PPA package. Since then, the hard disk did not spin up periodically : it looks like it solved my problem. Thanks to all of you who worked on it. [Bug 304345] Re: File chooser dialog doesn't provide network access
I also face this issue. I would expect the file chooser dialog to allow me to access network bookmarks (including mounting them if they are not mounted already). It's very annoying when you want to save a file on a network share from Firefox or Thunderbird : you have to save it locally, then transfer it with nautilus. I found the following workarounds : - mount permanently the network locations in /etc/fstab : it works, but is not adapted to all situations. In my case, the server that hosts the network share is a standard PC, not a 24/7 server. So, if this PC is not up at startup time, the share is not mounted - add a bookmark for ~/.gvfs directory, as suggested by smonff : it appears in the file chooser, but is empty if the share is not mounted. So you have to mount it before - add a bookmark for ~/.gvfs AND install/configure the package gigolo : this software can automatically mount network shares. If you declare it as a startup application, it will try to connect every minute. See http://www.borpin.co.uk/2011/03/29/map-network-drive-in-ubuntu-again/ . It's still a workaround but it's the best I found so far. In any case, it would be much much easier to be able to open/save directly in a network bookmark. It is a frequent use case at home or in small organizations (several computers with shares to exchange data, but no central server) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/304345 Title: File chooser dialog doesn't provide network access To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gtk/+bug/304345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: I can not connect to some Wifi on my Asus eee-PC 1015PX netbook. The driver is the open-source one : brcmsmac. I can connect to Wifis on channels =11 with no problem. If I configure my Wifi on channel 13, it is correctly detected on another laptop using iwl3945 driver, and I can connect to it. But it does not appear in the list on the netbook. This bug seems to be fixed on Precise (12.04). I've been able to read the dvd on the alpha 2 version (without the no dvd menu workaround). I could read it correctly with vlc, but not with totem (it does not hang, but nothing appears on the screen : maybe it is another issue, as precise is still alpha). [Bug 923749] Re: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get
It's a bit better with the reveal sensitivity set to high. Anyway, if the push mouse offscreen feature might be a good idea on trackpads, I still don't find it ergonomical with a mouse. At first use, people (including me) don't seem to have the reflex to push on the left, and think the launcher does not reveal, or does not work. Another problem is that this push on the left physically moves the mouse on the left, while the cursor does not move. After a few pushes, the mouse has moved a few centimeters on the left. So you need to lift it and reposition it on the right (else it finally hits the keyboard, if you are right-handed) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/923749 Title: New push mouse offscreen feature really difficult to get To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/923749/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

There is another bug on Launchpad for the same issue on other software : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/304345 I confirm it's a big problem when you often use network shares. One can mount them permanently in fstab, of course, but it only works if this share is always up. In other contexts, like a home network or small organization (with a few standard PCs and no central serve), fstab is not adequate (mouting fails if the network share is not up at startup time) Another workaround I found is to use the software package gigolo : see http://www.borpin.co.uk/2011/03/29/map-network-drive-in-ubuntu-again/ If you put a bookmark on ~/.gvfs (as suggested above), it can help mounting shares automatically when a remote PC is up. [Bug 931168] Re: brcm80211 Wifi driver : cannot connect to channels11
I did some more testing on different versions of Ubuntu. I installed on the same machine Ubuntu Precise and Maverick. On Ubuntu Precise 12.04 alpha 2 (with all current updates), I have the same behavior : channels11 seem unreachable But on Ubuntu Maverick 10.10, it works! It's certainly because Maverick does not use the same driver for Broadcam Wifi network adapters. By default, the wifi does not work, but Maverick suggests to install proprietary drivers : Broadcam STA wireless drivers. After installing this suggested driver, I can connect to my wifi on channel 13, and the reported driver is wl. If I restart on Oneiric or Precise, this same Wifi is not detected. That confirms it's not a hardware problem. It makes me suspect a bug in brcm80211 driver -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931168 Title: brcm80211 Wifi driver : cannot connect to channels11 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/931168/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried to test these latest kernels on Precise alpha 2, but had compile errors with dkms : see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/933519 I still can not connect to the wifi on channel 13, but this test is probably not relevant as the dkms errors are precisely on bcmwl source... [Bug 931168] Re: brcm80211 Wifi driver : cannot connect to channels11
On this page : http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211#Developer_information , at paragraph Regulatory Implementation for brcmsmac is written : This generation of chips contain additional regulatory support independent of the driver. The devices use a single worldwide regulatory domain, with channels 12-14 (2.4 GHz band) and channels 52-64 and 100-140 (5 GHz band) restricted to passive operation. Transmission on those channels is suppressed until appropriate other traffic is observed on those channels. Within the driver, we use the ficticious country code X2 to represent this worldwide regulatory domain. There is currently no interface to configure a different domain. The driver reads the SROM country code from the chip and hands it up to mac80211 as the regulatory hint, however this information is otherwise unused with the driver. If I understand correctly, it would mean that channels 12-14 would be restricted by the hardware itself? Version 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu5 of this package does not work on kernel 3.3 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/912155 : the compile error still happens, even if I already use this patched version) I think it's because of the dkms declaration in dkms.conf : PATCH[3]=0004-Add-support-for-Linux-3.2.patch PATCH_MATCH[3]=^3.2 which means that the patch 0004-Add-support-for-Linux-3.2.patch will only be applied on kernel versions starting with 3.2 (off-topic : I suppose the dot should be escaped?) I suggest to replace it with something like : PATCH_MATCH[3]=^3\.[23] so that the patch would be applied for kernel 3.3, too. Maybe the regex should also be applied on further versions (3.4, 3.5 etc)? I don't what is the policy for that. [Bug 769038] Re: sweethome3d does not start
The same bug existed on Debian and has been closed : http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=626050 The fix seems to be backported in version 3.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1 of this package, that should be shipped with oneiric : see the changelog in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sweethome3d/3.1+dfsg-1ubuntu1 Installing this package on oneiric makes sweethome3d runnable with default jre (openjdk-6), without the need to install sun-java6. It also works if you install this version on natty (but you have to force the installation with a dpkg --force-depends-version). Anyway, I noticed that 3D performance was much better with the Sun JDK (at least with the one bundled in the .tgz downloadable on the official site : http://www.sweethome3d.com/fr/download.jsp) than with openjdk-6. I'm not sure if I tested the package sun-java6 of ubuntu (it should be the same as Sun JDK). I might be wrong, but it seems to me that Sun JDK has some 3D hardware acceleration (and/or optimization) that is not enabled in openjdk-6. I tested openjdk-7 (in a beta version, some time ago), and noticed that the performance was the same as with Sun JDK. [Bug 31471] Re: Firefox file selector should show remote shares
Another workaround that can fit some needs : use the package autofs You can configure it so that it mounts your network shares in a location like /mnt/autofs/servername/share You can then put a bookmark on this directory, and it seems to be always displayed in open/save dialogs (tested on Firefox and Thunderbird) Autofs mounts and unmounts the shares automatically when they are used/unused If you need to use credentials (login/password) to connect to your SMB share, it's less straightforward but seems to work with a bit more config. Public bug reported: SparkAngels is a java application that is runned via JNLP. http://www.spark-angels.com The current jnlp file can be found here : http://dnld0.sparkom.com/sparkangels/sangels/sparkangels.jnlp With OpenJDK 6b20-1.9.10-0ubuntu1~10.04.2, it starts OK, but fails to connect to its servers. To reproduce, you can start the JNLP on command-line (javaws sparkangels.jnlp), open the dropdown Options, choose Utilisation par code then Obtenir un code (this is in French, maybe it would be translated in your language when you run it) At this moment, the application tries to connect to its servers and it fails with the following error message in the log : ---W-A-R-N-I-N-G--- IO-ERROR CONTACTING SERVER cccp1.sparkom.com: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.sun.security.internal.spec) ---W-A-R-N-I-N-G--- IO-ERROR CONTACTING SERVER cccp0.sparkom.com: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.sun.security.internal.spec) sparkangels.xu: No server available at sparkangels.lt.b(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.vq.a(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.vq.a(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.vq.a(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.q.m(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.q.b(Unknown Source) at sparkangels.ih.run(Unknown Source) ---W-A-R-N-I-N-G--- EXCEPTION MESSAGE: No server available If I use sun-java-6 packages instead of openjdk-6, it works correctly. If I try to open the same jnlp with oneiric (with version 6b23~pre11-0ubuntu1.11.10), it works correctly. So it looks like a bug on this version of openjdk, that has been fixed in latest ubuntu version. I found a workaround here : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=471413#c33 You simply have to create a file ~/.java.policy with this content : grant { permission java.security.SecurityPermission putProviderProperty.SunJCE; permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.sun.security.internal.spec; permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.sun.security.rsa; permission java.lang.RuntimePermission accessClassInPackage.sun.security.internal.interfaces; }; This application is very usefull to provide assistance through a remote desktop access. Just for info : a separate bug exists for the speed issue : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/simple-scan/+bug/703322 Regarding the comparison with a snapscan e20, I gave a wrong information : it takes around 1 minute 30 seconds to scan an A4 at 600 dpi with a snapscan e20 (not 20 seconds...) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/587600 Title: unable to scan with a HP ScanJet 3670 using simple-scan -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 703322] Re: simple-scan is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi
I experience the same speed problem, either with xsane or simple-scan, with the same scanner HP Scanjet 3670. I think it is related to sane-backends, not simple-scan I did a few tests : In a Windows XP virtual machine (Virtualbox 4.0.4 with USB2 support), on my computer : - the initialization takes between 12 and 16 seconds - the scan at 300 dpi takes 55 seconds - the scan at 600 dpi takes around 4 minutes - the scan at 1200 dpi takes around 30 minutes On the same computer, on Lucid 64bits, with the latest version of sane-backends (sane-backends - 1.0.22-0ubuntu1~lucid2 , taken from the PPA : https://edge.launchpad.net/~robert-ancell/+archive/sane-backends/+packages ) : - the initialization takes between 16 and 20 seconds. That seems to depend on the dpi settings and/or the fact that a previous scan has been made or not - the scan at 300 dpi takes 55 seconds - the scan at 600 dpi takes around 8 minutes - the scan at 1200 dpi takes around 90 minutes (I stopped it before the end) That would lead to the following assumptions for the linux driver : - the initialization time seems very long to me, but it might be normal on that scanner - the scan time is normal at 300 dpi, but should be improvable at 600 dpi (4 minutes vs 8 minutes) and 1200 dpi (30 minutes vs 90 minutes) ** Summary changed: - simple-scan is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi + HP Scanjet 3670 is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi ** Package changed: simple-scan (Ubuntu) = sane-backends (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: sane-backends (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/703322 Title: HP Scanjet 3670 is very slow when scanning at 600-1200 dpi -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 580333] Re: tomboy notes disappeared
Sandy, Mike, Owen, I just experienced the same loss of tomboy notes as you described. My filesystem is in ext4 format, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with all current updates. The notes disappeared just after a system crash (everything frozen). Usually, if my system crashes or is shut down violently, the notes that where open on my desktop do not re-open automatically... but I can find them in the tomboy drop-down list. This time, I could not find those notes any more in this list. I looked at the content of ~/.local/share/tomboy : the note files are still there, but with a zero byte length. I made a manual e2fsck on the system (from a liveCD) : it did report any error to me, and my /lost+found folder is empty. I seems like I had 4 open notes (based on the number of zero-length note files I have) That's really annoying to have a loss of data of this kind! I could find some external backups of 3 of these files, but I lost everything I did in between, of course. Sandy, if there is a more specific bug on that issue (either on launchpad or elsewhere), maybe you could tell us where. [Bug 486837] Re: Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic
I now think that the freeze issue might come from a hardware problem : I made a test that worked well : - I removed the overclocking of my CPU (so that the CPU uses its normal speed). The overclocking was stable for years, but one never knows. My graphic card is not overclocked - I reduced the screen resolution to 1024x768 (instead of 1600x1200) - I used the DVI output instead of the VGA output (with the same flat screen) This time, the youtube video was stable. The reduced CPU speed made it choppy, but at least the machine did not freeze. That makes me think it could be simply related to the overclocking. Why did the freeze not happen when not using the proprietary nvidia driver? Maybe because the open-source driver does not use some hardware acceleration. Maybe in this case the AGP port draws more current or something similar. Why did the freeze happen only after the upgrade to karmic? Maybe a coincidence (even if I would find it surprising). Maybe the recent versions of the nvidia driver and/or the flash plugin make use of a feature that was not used before, and that leads to the problems with overclocking I only can make assumptions, but at least I have a workaround -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 486837] Re: Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic
It does not seem to be related to the screen resolution (tried both 1024x768 and 1600x1200), or to the VGA/DVI port (tried both). So I assume it was related to the overclocking -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I change the status to invalid, as it seems to come from the overclocking of my CPU ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- Freezes with nvidia-glx-185 or -190 after upgrade from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/486837 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 524522] Re: kernel crash on resume from standby mode
I did not experience this bug for a few days. The kernel is still 2.6.32-21. It might have been fixed when I flashed the BIOS of my motherboard (from version F2 to F7) -- kernel crash on resume from standby mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
