I think winamp and windows media player have facility to retrieve details from servers. Look for something called CDDB in preferences. But it has been really long time since I used windows so can't tell for sure. > i have a cd Cafe De Flore and Sound Juicer shows all the track details > nicely - how come ?? AFAIK, every album cd has a unique identifier. The data is tored in database against this identifier. So sound juicer just uses this id to retrieve details. As far as I remember, the bug is specific to some hard disk and not all. IIRC, the problem is that Ubuntu keeps waking up the hard disk every few seconds (or milli seconds perhaps) which causes more wear and tear than usual. I have also heard that a workaround is available to fix the problem. Sound Juicer retrieves track details from online databases such as Musicbrainz, provided the details are available for your CD. You will need to be online for retrieval to work. Musicbrainz is community managed database, anyone can register and add details for the CD. There is some menu item in sound juicer which will let you add details yourself. [ubuntu-in] Some problems on Ubuntu 7.04 /7.10and some questions
Hi Have been struggling with some niggling problems (well maybe more than niggling) The original ubuntu is 7.04 with some partial upgrades / updates from 7.10. I also installed some additional packages to try and improve access to other file systems and some auto mount tools and what has happened is that vfat partitions on external USB devices like FAT32 an FAT16 file systems don't get mounted. the programs installed are automount, cdfs-src , fuseutils. There is an VFAT partition on my laptop hard disk which mounts normally. The error i get while trying to mount these external systems is "Cannot Mount Volume Unable to Mount the volume "S_disc' mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program or other error. In some cases useful infor is found in syslog - try dmesg|tail or so" then ram-laptop:~$ dmesg |tail [ 1037.76] sdb: Mode Sense: 27 00 00 00 [ 1037.76] sdb: assuming drive cache: write through [ 1037.76] sdb: sdb1 sdb2 [ 1037.78] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi disk sdb [ 1037.78] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0 [ 1038.236000] FAT: Unrecognized mount option "usefree" or missing value [ 1038.292000] kjournald starting. [ 1837.152000] FAT: Unrecognized mount option "usefree" or missing value which i don't understand ?? so whats this problem and how can it be resolved. *** I have not done a full upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 because the first time i did it crashed the x-org and i had to reinstall 7.04 and then do only selective upgrades (of some packages) from 7.10. Also unable to install 7.10 because i have only the repository DVD's and not a boot cd / dvd. thanks ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

[ubuntu-in] Login problem
Dear Ubuntu folks, I just procured a copy of Hardy Heron and tried the live CD option on my windows XP PC. Well everything went fine but the system asks for a login password. The default username is "ubuntu". The system does not accept any password for this username. I have tried all permutations and combinations. Actually it should not ask for any pwd, but this CD does. I have tried with other copies too. Also I used the "install inside windows" option and installed the OS on my windows XP PC. I had given a username and pwd. Again it does not accept the password I typed in originally while installing. Has anyone any idea about this? Please help. thanks & regards, SANJEEV KAMAT.
