I experience this behavior with all my 12.04 machines, independent of brand, physical, or virtual. I experience the same behavior on: - my 5 year old Dell Dimension 8300, which has a 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet Controller - my brand new Dell Vostro 420, which has a RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller. When I connect the network cable to my Dell Precision M2300 laptop, which has a NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express card, it *does* connect at 1Gb/s. I'm sorry I didn't follow up on this one. Coincidentally I upgraded from gutsy to hardy yesterday and found that this problem no longer exists, that is, I can normally logon using xdmcp. I ran into the same problem renaming a directory to Ambient 1: Music for Airports on a (nautilus mounted?) smb volume. The name is probably illegal because of the colon. Nautlius changed it to ALL55E~C (?). Public bug reported: Like https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35192, install hung when connecting for additional language packages. Except I did the regular English install. I had no wired connection, and the wireless connection on eth1 was not enabled by the installer (I think). The resolution for me was to ifdown eth0. Then it continued at once. I very much agree. It's one of the first things you do on a computer: look on the network and see what's connected. I remember thinking that anyone looking at ubuntu for the first time and trying this out would be very very disappointed that this does not work out-of-the-box. And I'm also very sure that no one except a linux nerd like myself, would get it to work. [Bug 32067] Need Access Options on Samba Share Folder Dialog

We need an interface when sharing a folder that somehow points the user to adding a samba user. [Bug 32067] Gnome Samba Share Folder does not work out-of-the-box (was: the security parameter must be set to share, not user, in smb.conf)
Hi, Is there any progress on this subject? Samba folder sharing still does not work out-of-the-box. The first time I ran into this, it took me over two hours to find out that I had to add a user with smbpasswd -a, and I'm not exactly a linux newbie either. Maybe it would be good to have smbpasswd -a being executed automatically the first time you share a folder from Gnome, perhaps using a little dialog window. Or maybe setup automatic linux-samba user synchronization?
