Re: [Bug 991232] Re: 14e4:432b Regression in wireless performance when on battery power

2012-05-21 Thread Bart Heinsius
@Joseph Salisbury:

I tried but with no success.
I installed the mainline kernel and accompanying headers but the broadcom
driver won't load without the bcmwl-kernel-source (re-)installed but that
doesn't work because:

Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the
kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed.

[Bug 991977] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on shutdown

2012-05-21 Thread Bart Heinsius
I experience this behavior with all my 12.04 machines, independent of brand,
physical, or virtual.
I think the working of halt has just changed. halt now halts the machine, halt
-p halts and powers off.
actually I don't see any documentation indicating that halt should power off
the machine.
can someone from canonical confirm this?

Re: [Bug 991232] Re: 14e4:432b Regression in wireless performance when on battery power

2012-05-21 Thread Bart Heinsius
@Joseph Salisbury:

not sure this is a regression, the original bug report was
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/651008 which expired
because it was reported on maverick for which support had expired. the
problem still existed in 12.04, Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) asked me
to file a new report for 12.04, I copied the subject from that bug report.

[Bug 991232] Re: Regression in wireless performance when on battery power (broadcom)

2012-05-03 Thread Bart Heinsius
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

 1. Steps I took that caused me to encounter the problem:
disconnect the A/C power cable from the laptop, laptop then runs on battery
power

 2. expected behavior:
same network speed as on A/C power

 3. behavior actually encountered:
 very slow network speed

 network speed on A/C power:
 bheinsius@bheinsius-Latitude-E6400:~$ ping 192.168.0.1
 PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=1.62 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=1.29 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=1.29 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=1.42 ms

 network speed on battery power:
 bheinsius@bheinsius-Latitude-E6400:~$ ping 192.168.0.1
 PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=43.4 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=63.9 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=85.6 ms
 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=108 ms

WORKAROUND: Disable the power saving measures implemented by
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless.
 To disable them do:
 sudo touch /etc/pm/power.d/wireless

You now should have an empty file named wireless without the executable bit
set in /etc/pm/power.d.
 Check with:
 ls -lh /etc/pm/power.d/
You should see a file like this:
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2010-12-31 18:53 wireless

 Reference: man pm-powersave

Christopher M. Penalver, what you wrote is unclear to me.

1. what to enter in Summary and Further Information fields?
2. then mark as duplicate of this bug (991232)?

2012-04-29 Thread Bart Heinsius
@penalvch: instructions to update bug with 12.04 debug information do
not work.

apport-collect -p linux 651008

gives:

You are not the reporter of this problem report. It is much easier to mark a
bug as a duplicate of another than to
move your comments and attachments to a new bug.

Subsequently, we recommend that you file a new bug report using apport-bug
and make a comment in this bug
about the one you file.

Do you really want to proceed?

selecting Yes gives:

[Bug 991232] Re: Regression in wireless performance when on battery power (broadcom)

2012-04-29 Thread Bart Heinsius
1. Steps I took that caused me to encounter the problem:
disconnect the A/C power cable from the laptop, laptop then runs on battery
power

2. expected behavior:
same network speed as on A/C power

3. behaviour actually encoutered:
very slow network speed

network speed on A/C power:
bheinsius@bheinsius-Latitude-E6400:~$ ping 192.168.0.1

64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=108 ms

workaround from bug 651008:
-- begin quote
(This will not fix all problems for all: see comment 24.)
Disable the power saving measures implemented by
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/wireless.
To disable them do:
sudo touch /etc/pm/power.d/wireless

You now should have an empty file named wireless without the executable bit set
in /etc/pm/power.d.
Check with:
ls -lh /etc/pm/power.d/
You should see a file like this:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2010-12-31 18:53 wireless

Reference: man pm-powersave
-- end quote

I installed the latest upstream kernel available.
after boot there's no wireless networking.
so could not test if problem is resolved in latest upstream kernel available.

will add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

fixed by removing laptop-mode-tools and rebooting.

[Bug 521888] [NEW] Booting from iSCSI target fails

2010-02-14 Thread Bart Heinsius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Hi,

I have an Intel NIC supporting iSCSI boot.
I successfully installed Karmic Server 64-bit from the install CD to the iSCSI
target.
Upon reboot, grub2 won't boot the OS just installed.

It looks like it can't mount the iSCSI target. On the screen I see:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: ...

and it drops me to a BusyBox shell.

I did get this setup running with CentOS 5.4.

[Bug 489991] [NEW] Dell Laptop - external display goes blank when using docking station

2009-11-29 Thread Bart Heinsius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I insert my Dell M2300 laptop in a Dell docking station, I get the
initial Ubuntu boot screen on the external monitor that is connected to
the docking station but when X starts the external monitor goes blank.

My solution was to add the following line to the Device section in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option UseDisplayDevice DFP-1

Xorg should recognize the docking station and the external monitor
attached through it and add the option above to xorg.conf before
starting.

[Bug 309211] Re: Intel Gibabit Ethernet NIC (82541PI) operating at 100Mbps instead of 1000Mbps after upgrading to Hardy

2008-12-21 Thread Bart Heinsius
Some additional info.

I experience the same behavior on:

- my 5 year old Dell Dimension 8300, which has a 82541PI Gigabit Ethernet
Controller
- my brand new Dell Vostro 420, which has a RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit
Ethernet controller.

When I connect the network cable to my Dell Precision M2300 laptop,
which has a NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express card, it
*does* connect at 1Gb/s.

When I compare the ethtool output from the two, I see that:
- my laptop supports and advertises link mode 1000baseT/Half whereas the
Dimension and Vostro don't.
- my laptop has PHYAD 1 whereas the Dimension and Vostro have PHYAD 0.

2008-07-28 Thread Bart Heinsius
I'm sorry I didn't follow up on this one.

Coincidentally I upgraded from gutsy to hardy yesterday and found that
this problem no longer exists, that is, I can normally logon using
xdmcp.

Must have been fixed somewhre along the way.

thanks, Bart.

[Bug 236349] [NEW] Document does not print and gives unhandled MIME type: application/octet-stream on Print Preview

2008-05-31 Thread Bart Heinsius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I opened issue 13 of full circle magazine
(http://fullcirclemagazine.org/download-manager.php?id=74).
It looks fine.
I want to print it, I go to File-Print, I select my HPLaserJet6MP printer and
click Print.
Nothing comes out of the printer.
I go to File-Print-Print Preview
After 15 seconds of full CPU load, Evince Document Viewer opens with error
message:

[Bug 215424] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in nautilus_file_is_hidden_file()

2008-05-17 Thread Bart Heinsius
I ran into the same problem renaming a directory to Ambient 1: Music
for Airports on a (nautilus mounted?) smb volume. The name is probably
illegal because of the colon. Nautlius changed it to ALL55E~C (?). Then
I renamed it again and it crashed.

[Bug 190968] Re: [hardy] [regression] iwl3945 doesn't associate on kernel 2.6.24-7

2008-05-03 Thread Bart Heinsius
A new kernel (2.6.24-17) was available in the Proposed section, I upgraded to
it and networking wireless isn't working anymore, like before. dpkg tells me
I'm still running the 2.6.24-16 version of linux-backports-modules while apt
tells me that 2.6.24-17 is available. Why isn't it telling me that?
Anyway, I will upgrade linux-backports-modules and see if it gives me my
wireless networking back.

Hi,

I believe that this bug still exists for Gutsy Server.
Anyway, my D-Link DWL-G650+ AirPlusG+ with acx111 would not work
out-of-the-box, with messages in dmesg like above:

[ 51.079461] requesting firmware image 'tiacx111c16'
[ 51.996052] acx: firmware image 'tiacx111c16' was not provided. Check your ho

[ 51.996064] requesting firmware image 'tiacx111'
[ 52.005342] acx: firmware image 'tiacx111' was not provided. Check your hotpl

In my Gutsy Server install, these images got installed in
/lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/acx.
I copied the directory /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/acx to /lib/firmware/

difficult to say since i have since installed feisty on all my machines
without any problems, but then again, none had the same configuration as
the one that this bug is about.

[Bug 105388] Install hangs on 83% on laptop without wired connection

2007-04-11 Thread Bart Heinsius
Public bug reported:

Like https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/35192, install hung when connecting for
additional language packages.
Except I did the regular English install.
I had no wired connection, and the wireless connection on eth1 was not enabled
by the installer (I think).
The resolution for me was to ifdown eth0. Then it continued at once.
Running on a Dell Precision M20 laptop.

cheers Bart.

[Bug 32067] Re: the security parameter must be set to share, not user, in smb.conf

2007-02-22 Thread Bart Heinsius
I very much agree. It's one of the first things you do on a computer: look on
the network and see what's connected.
I remember thinking that anyone looking at ubuntu for the first time and trying
this out would be very very disappointed that this does not work
out-of-the-box. And I'm also very sure that no one except a linux nerd like
myself, would get it to work.

How can we raise priority?

regards Bart.

[Bug 32067] Need Access Options on Samba Share Folder Dialog

2007-02-22 Thread Bart Heinsius
The title of this bug should be changed too I guess. I don't know if
this is the way it should be done, but I will try to change it to Need
Access Options on Samba Share Folder Dialog.

We need an interface when sharing a folder that somehow points the user to
adding a samba user.
I would think:

+---+
Path : /home/myuser/myFolderToShare
Share through: Windows networks (SMB)
Access : [ ] Everyone (read only)
[ ] Linux users and rights
[advanced]
+---+

Button [advanced] goes to a more advanced screen to setup samba users.

regards Bart.

[Bug 32067] Gnome Samba Share Folder does not work out-of-the-box (was: the security parameter must be set to share, not user, in smb.conf)

2007-02-08 Thread Bart Heinsius
Hi,

Is there any progress on this subject? Samba folder sharing still does not work
out-of-the-box. The first time I ran into this, it took me over two hours to
find out that I had to add a user with smbpasswd -a, and I'm not exactly a
linux newbie either.
Maybe it would be good to have smbpasswd -a being executed automatically the
first time you share a folder from Gnome, perhaps using a little dialog window.
Or maybe setup automatic linux-samba user synchronization?

Thanks for your support.
cheers Bart.

[Bug 83234] Re: vmware server 1.01 installation fails on fresh edgy

2007-02-04 Thread Bart Heinsius
Hi Pochu,

Thanks for your answer. In the repositories, I see the vmware player,
but not the vmware server. Anyway, I solved the problem.

For the archive, on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2106156,
lamego says that installing inetd or xinetd solves it. Indeed it does.

regards and thanks for your support,
Bart.
