Hi,

Just a quick note to say if you haven't already collared a co-worker
and ordered a ticket for the Ubuntu in Business event then you'd
better hurry. There's currently only 32 tickets left for the event on
13th July in London.

See the site for more details!

Hope to see you and your co-workers/customers/boss there!

[ubuntu-uk] [OT] Learn Linux with CompTIA and LPI

2010-06-08 Thread Bill Quinn
Normally I wouldn't post this to the Ubuntu List - however as LPI /
Linux+ certification was mentioned recently on this list and this is a
free competition I thought some people may be interested.

CompTIA recently announced the revamp of the Linux certification in
partnership with the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) to become
CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI. Under this innovative program, candidates
who undertake and pass the CompTIA Linux+, Powered by LPI certification,
also become certified in LPIC-1 as well, enabling further participation
in the LPI programme if the candidate chooses.

To promote our partnership, we are delighted to announce another
competition where one lucky individual will win a free Sybex CompTIA
Linux+ Powered by LPI study guide as well as a free Pearson VUE exam

voucher to get certified!

To enter, simply click here,
http://www.comptia.org/global/en-GB/misc/linuxpluslpi.aspx and fill in
the form as well as answer the following question: What date was the
Linux kernel made open to the public? Remember, you've got to be over 18
years of age, live in the UK and be a member of the CompTIA UK Facebook
Page. You can only enter once and the answer must be correct. CompTIA's
decision is final!

Competition closes at the end of this month so submit you're form today!

the competition is being run by CompTIA. Any questions, queries or

Sounds good. One or two things I'm not clear on though. Does the
e-mail address I enter have to be the one I use on Facebook? (I'm on
Facebook using my personal e-mail address but entered the competition
with my work e-mail address). Also when you say the date the Linux
kernel was made open, does this relate to when Linux first posted about
it or when Linux 0.1 was made available? (which are two different
dates).

Also I guess a technicality, the date listed on Wikipedia is different
to the date listed on Linus' original mailing list post so I'm not sure
if you'd accept either or just the one date?

Ta,

Rob

Comptia's name is known but more for the a+, network+ certs than linux+
Both will be archaic and up-to-date so that it covers everything you

You need to put the question in context.

What is the man command used for?

A) It displays information about the syntax for a command.

B) It is the replacement for the boy command.

C) It is a standard alias to ls -la | more.

D) It is used to display formatted HTML pages.

With all IT Certification Exams I have seen or taken (Microsoft, Cisco,
ITIL, Novell), there is usually one answer which you can discount. I
would interpret this sample question as demonstrating that point, albeit
in a very obvious manner.

Some of the other questions at
http://www.lpi.org/eng/certification/the_lpic_program/lpic_1/exam_101_sa
mple_questions are less obvious. For example:

What command sends the output of cmd1 to the input of cmd2?

A) cmd1 | cmd2

B) cmd1 || cmd2

C) cmd1 cmd2

D) cmd1 ; cmd2

E) cmd1 cmd2

To answer the question, I agree that LPI is the certification most

I'm interested in getting involved in the install party. Our group is
just starting up a community cloud project and I'm happy to talk about
some Ubuntu/LTSP pilots we're currently running with NGOs.

If the venue is small, I think it might work to do two separate events -
one oriented towards business/NGOs and the other a more informal 'do'
for people in general who might like to experiment with Ubuntu.

Either date is fine for me, but I think it's best not to clash with
other events that people will want to go to?

I dunno about £25 - I think it might discourage quite a few people.
Surely there must be some sponsorship to be got? Anyone got any ideas
about who to approach? I'll give it some thought . . .

Now we could run the same material Saturday/Sunday so that more people can

If it gets too large, I may be able to source another venue for free but

Personally, I would prefer if we could do it on a Friday. The

something we would be happy to be involved with and would
 probably want
to invite some businesses to come along and see it in action.

I do agree that Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud would be interesting to many

that topic on a weekday, i.e. Friday.

I would also need help with Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud to do that topic
an justice. I don't have enough practical experience to do the topic
justice by in detail. I was going to do some work on UEC this
weekend, but have been a little busy planning.

I'm working with cloud stuff at the moment, some of them involving
Ubuntu so I'm happy to help on that topic. Between us, we should be able
to come up with something that makes sense. If we want to demo it, we
will need a couple of servers though.

I have just noticed this expo. Unfortunately I will not be able to
attend these dates.

However, I *had* been intending to try to arrange a community
(village) stand for the INFOPOINT display - some here might know that
I run an infopoint display regularly at bracknell computer fairs. I
believe an 'infopoint' display would be successful at the expo as part
of the Community Village. Infopoint covers all FOSS but tends to be
relativey heavy on live Linux CDs including Ubuntu.
http://infopointproject.org/wordpress/materials/infopoint-guide/

Question:
Does anyone here feel motivated and able (or know anyone?) to commit
to take my intended place and arrange attend and represent Infopoint?

I have not yet made any arrangements although I will be very happy to
assist in preliminary arrangements under the lead of any volunteer. I
have a lot of materials such as leaflets I use at the computer fairs
and these will be also available for whoever can take it on.

Anyone please?

Note
Infopoint is distinct from a straight 'Ubuntu' stand. Expo organisers
tend to view Ubuntu as commercial on the grounds that it is sponsored.
Unless this changes, this means that Ubuntu may not get a stand in the
'community' village.

Looking at the Olympia website: Olympia National Hall has an event from
2nd of October, Olympia Two has events on both the 30th and 2nd. Neither
of them are Linux related.

The Linux Expo, as was, typically was at Earls Court in October. This
show changed to CLOUD Expo Europe, at the Barbican (May 2009).

The link which Alan gives links to IDG World Expo who typically run
Linux World Expo in the US, although this was rebranded to OpenSource
World.

So unfortunately I would presume no show in Olympia in October.

Hi Gord,

Good Find!

Interesting, i contacted the creator of the show during Series 2 with
the intention of getting a Ubuntu poster in the background. They said
it wasn't out of the question, but Series 3 was not yet in the planning
stage. I would imagine that the 'Highway' poster would be less than
ideal, but one stating Ubuntu, Linux for Human Beings only would be a
really good idea.

We would need to speak to Canonical to get clearing for the logo, i
can't imagine them saying No. So the next thing is getting a suitable
sized poster. If it's just a plain poster, would should probably
consider getting a run of at least 10 - as i know i'd certainly consider

some.

I've added this idea to the IdealsPool of the Wiki [0]. We should
probably try and construct a suitable email to Ben. If we start this on

the Wiki[1], we could all try and chime in with suggestions.
