[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-08-13 Thread DonQuichote
@Teo:

I updated grub, but afterwards, just to be sure, I ran the grub-install
command like I did when I repaired my non-booting system.

My laptop still boots.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-06-26 Thread DonQuichote
Update: the boot repair disk fails to boot, because of the PAE bug.
Adding forcepae to the boot options does not help either. However,
Super Grub2 Disk does boot, recognizes the config and can be used to
boot the system. Now I have the safest laptop ever! Nobody can boot it
but me!

In the previous post I thought that the found filesystems were broken,
bu this is not the case. The /boot directory on the / partition is off
course empty because the /boot partition was mounted there. Reading this
list and different forums on the internet, ot appears that the master
boot record and the grub2 install are no longer in sync when / and /boot
are on different partitions.

I tried a re-install (using synaptic) of the packages grub-pc, grub-
pc-bin, and grub2-common. It did not solve the issue.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-06-26 Thread DonQuichote
I got my machine too boot again:

* I Used the Super Grub Disk to boot into the existing installation on my laptop
* I checked /etc/mtab to see which device was mounted (in my case /dev/sda)
* then I ran sudo grub-install   --boot-directory=/boot   /dev/sda

For people using the Super Grub Disk: selecting the mysterious option
everything will enable you to select the existing boot configuration
on your hard disk. If you booted from an external CD drive, you can
remove it after booting.

The boot repair disk was not an option. It refuses to boot when burned
to CD, adding the repository failed (the command add-apt-repository does
not exist), and downloading the debs only gives a message enresolvable
dependencies, even when extra library debs were downloaded and tried
first.

[Bug 1289977] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found

2014-06-24 Thread DonQuichote
I know a lot has been said already, but I want to add my case just for
the record. It just might contain info on what went unexpectedly right
or wrong when it shouldn't have.

I had a working 13.10 installation on a (pretty ancient but
indestructible) Panasonic CF-18 Toughbook. This is one of the devices
from the time that PAE was enabled but kept secret. I had modified the
grub configuration to show the menu at boot, using the normal way of
editing /etc/default/grub and running sudo update-grub. The menu showed,
so this worked. No error messages. I had 3 partitions on only one hard
drive: /, /boot and swap. I always like to have a separate boot
partition in case things go wrong, but reading the comments this has
bitten me now.

From the grub_rescue prompt, I can barely do anything, but the ls command
works and I see that:
(hd0,msdos3) contains an EMPTY /boot/grub directory,
(hd0,msdos2) contains no files (the swap partition)
(hd0,msdos1) contains the images (like vmlinuz-3.8.0-34-generic) in its root
directory and a /grub directory, but no /boot directory.

Something is definitely broken here! For the record, none of these
partitions were formatted with a FAT filesystem.

After I did sudo do-release-upgrade, I waited with the reboot, and re-
added my third party add-ins. I read that fake-pae was no longer needed,
but a kernel option forcepae was, so I removed the repository that
provided the fake-pae package, added that option to /etc/default/grub
and ran sudo update-grub. No error message there either.

My 2 cents: the release updater and update-grub should be able to tell
what partition is the boot partition, so a misconfiguration on only one
hard drive should be detected. I never manually messed with it, but just
followed the installation wizzard when I installed Xubuntu. If the
system was misconfigured, it gues that must have happened by either a
system upgrade or the update-grub command. In any case, I would
certainly expect update-grub to have warned me.

Well, the rest you can guess: I shut down the machine in full confidence
of an upgrade done well and was left with a system that does not boot
anymore. Don't take this too hard, I am a half-power user, so I am not
afraid to fix things. I just want to add that I was not using UEFI, not
using more than one drive and have not yet (or in the past) repaired the
boot process, though I did do some minor configuration in the proper
way. So, please take this bug seriously. I is a critical one.

By the way: the grub rescue prompt does not know the help command.

[Bug 1319324] [NEW] Problem report keeps the user in the dark

2014-05-14 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

When a crash report exists, I am greeted at system start-up with a
windows that says: There is a system problem. Do you want to report it
now? It does not give any clue about what that problem is.

I expect that window to show what problem it is referring to.

For example, I had an updating issue with a package from an external
repository (MariaDB in my case), which was easily solved by following
the suggestions made by apt-get. So there was no issue. However, at the
next system start I was confronted with this problem that was not a
problem. Only by looking in /var/crash/, I could see that it had to be
this issue.

Also, this window leaves me the choice between filing a report (bad
option in this case) or cancel, which means postponing the report (also
a bad option).

I would like the opportunity to see that the problem presented at start-
up is one I already solved, and NOT report it. Preferably in or from
that same start-up window. I managed to delete the problem report by
deleting the file in /var/crash/, but that is not exactly newbie-
friendly.

[Bug 1307449] Re: package dictionaries-common 1.20.2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 255

2014-04-24 Thread DonQuichote

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1211151

I recognise the bug as a duplicate, but for the record: the bug did leave me
with a complete system. I ran
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get upgrade
and there was only an (unrelated I think) issue with MariaDB from another
repository.

[Bug 1307449] [NEW] package dictionaries-common 1.20.2 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 255

2014-04-14 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

In the middle of a release upgrade, I am suddenly presented with a crash
report. I am in the middle of it, so I do not know wether this will
leave me with an incomplete system (again, after the bug about my
processor that DOES support pae, but is not recognized) or not.

I did not do anything special, other than:

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

I added the -d option because even upgrading from a less-than a year old
Xubuntu version (13.04 to 13.10, current) no longer works normally.
Output of lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 13.10
Release:13.10
But notice that I am in the middle of upgrading to that version.
I would off course expect the release upgrade to succeed, not a crash report.

For the record, I am upgrading the machine over an SSH connection with X
support enabled.

[Bug 1217340] Re: package linux-image-3.5.0-39-generic (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-08-27 Thread DonQuichote
SOLVED.

I thought I had already installed the fake-pae package, but it turned
out that I did not. To make matters worse there is no such thing as apt-
add-repository or add-apt-repository on my system, not even after
installing python-software-properties (and thereby installing
unattended-upgrades, ouch!).

After adding the repository (in synaptic):
URI: http://ppa.launchpad.net/prof7bit/fake-pae/ubuntu/
Distribution: quantal
Section(s): main

and getting the key:
$ sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys E54EEAA4

and:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get --no-install-recommends upgrade

I could bring my machine up-to-date in Xubuntu 12.10 (in a few runs,
because apt-get holds back a number of packages, which I installed
sudo apt-get --no-install-recommends install packagelist).

I did not expect that I could not upgrade while I had a pae kernel already
installed and running.

[Bug 646737] [NEW] contribution: svndeepcommit

2010-09-24 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: subversion-tools

package : subversion-tools
release: Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04
(Xubuntu)

Problem:
What I missed in subversion was a deep commit, like you can do in
TortoiseSVN. What I mean is that you can commit changes in normal directories
and in externals in one go.

Solution:
I wrote a simple bash script to do just that.
Note that this will not always succeed, just like TortoiseSVN's deep commit
does not always succeed. For instance, subversion cannot do a commit over two
entirely different repositories. This is normal behaviour and the error message
from the subversion command-line client points out what the problem is in such
case (again, comparable to TortoiseSVN). The batchfile is attached.

[Bug 463257] [NEW] unhelpful message in upgrading over ssh

2009-10-29 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

As this is a message bug only, I think it is a waste of everyone's time
to append logs. So I did not.

I wanted to upgrade an old laptop with a non-working keyboard to the
release candidate of 9.10. It is running 9.04 with LXDE desktop now. It
is a play machine that I use for testing. Ideal for running a realease
candidate. Because of the non-working keyboard, I usually connect
through SSH or XDMCP. Both ways work great.

But when I wanted to upgrade the 9.10 RC, it would not.

I typed over an SSH connection:
sudo update-manager -d
This worked, showed the graphical client (I forward X) and gave me the option
to install 9.10, warned that it was not stable yet, and I acknowledged. The
upgrade started, but immediately stopped with a dialog:

You are running the upgrade over a remote ssh connection with a
frontend that does not support this. The upgrade will abort now. Please
try without ssh.

This is extremely unhelpful. try without ssh is almost never an option
for people who use an SSH connection to upgrade a machine, be it a
virtual, a remote server or a server lacking even the hardware to be a
full desktop.

What I expect from such messages is not to block the user, but to guide
the user. The message suggests that there are frontends that DO support
SSH, but it suggests none of them and even does not give any pointer to
some documentation that can help.

I tried sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -t
9.10, sudo aptitude full-upgrade and sudo aptitude full-upgrade -t
9.10 with no success either. These ways just do not recognise that
there is a release coming (probably becaused it is not released as
stable yet).

I am upgrading the machine now over XDMCP, which works so far.
Personally, I think this is a lot trickier than doing it over SSH with
X.

But I want to request a more helpful message so the user is guided
toward a solution instead of stopped by the problem. Note that I am not
filing this bug because I think that update-manager -d should support
SSH. I cannot jugde that.

Version info ('lsb_release -rd'):
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

The version of update-manager is a bit tricky because the upgrade already
started. I get the following output:
$ apt-cache policy update-manager
update-manager:
  Installed: 1:0.111.9
  Candidate: 1:0.126.6
  Version table:
 1:0.126.6 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
 *** 1:0.111.9 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

But I started with the stable, (not proposed) version for 9.10 at 29
october 2009

[Bug 463257] Re: unhelpful message in upgrading over ssh

2009-10-29 Thread DonQuichote
Thank you for the rapid replies and actions.

I also tried do-release-upgrade, but it did not detect a development
release either. Also, there is no man page for this command and running
it without parameters does not show them either. I just looked at the
source and will upload a simple manpage for it later (I now see that it
supports a -d option).

Anyhow, upgrading over XDMCP went perfect.

Binary package hint: powermanga

Base info:
Using Xubuntu 9.04 both regular and with proposed (two systems, both have the
same issue).
Powermanga version: 0.90-dfsg-1
I expect the high scores to be updated after playing a game, but they do not. I
think this causes it:

The files containing the high scores are only writeable by root.
However, every normal user should be able to update the high scores.

The files are located in /var/games/powermanga/:
powermanga.hi
powermanga.hi-easy
powermanga.hi-hard

The easy one is used with `powermanga --easy` etc. Setting the files
to world writeable causes the high scores to be updated as expected.
Tested for long playing hours with both normal and easy mode ;)

FURTHER INFO:
There exists a group games of which the normal user account (the account I
created during the Xubuntu installation) is NOT a member. I can imagine that
people would want to restrict gaming possibilities and you could set the above
files to be only writeable by group games. However, that would also cause
the game to run less than optimal without tweaking.

[Bug 372081] [NEW] Too rigid requirements

2009-05-05 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mantis

Looking at the Mantis site, any web server that can handle PHP should
do. However, I cannot install mantis without getting either apache or
httpd. I have The Abyss webserver installed and there is no way to tell
the package management system that I already HAVE a fine web server. And
I don't want clashes with apache. The best solution would be if there
were an abstract web server package so I can tell that I have a web
server that is unknown to the package system.

If this is the wrong place to file this bug, please tell me where I
should file it.

Outcome of lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

No mantis package installed, as the install is the problem.

I expect a dependency on PHP alone or on any web server. But for the
latter, such a possibility should exist.

[Bug 282010] Re: Intrepid: Full Screen OpenGL Games Not Working With Intel Video Card

2009-04-30 Thread DonQuichote
I upgraded to 9.04 as well, and it scared the hell out of me. The known
problems talk about some intel video cards, but I did not think it
would lock up the system that hard. AND in the middle of an upgrade!
Nothing reacted: no terminal keys, no CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, nothing. Only
the off switch.

I finally got things working though by disabling all acceleration in
xorg.conf. But no action game runs any longer. Unreal Tournament is
barely playable (but the fastest of them all, even though it's a Windows
game), and other games (OpenArena, Briquolo) have turned to just watch-
and-die games.

Again, it was a very instructive experience. But not one for newbies or
the faint of heart. I would almost suggest fixing xorg.conf
temporarily during an upgrade by disabling hardware acceleration. And
fixing it back only after the upgrade has finished. I have no idea if
this is possible though.

[Bug 300504] Re: Unhelpful comment for disabled settings

2009-01-10 Thread DonQuichote
Well, I missed a pointer to where the settings were gone to. Even if the
update script migrates more than one device and therefore migrates to
more than one place, it is really helpful to tell where those places
are. If I had read /etc/default/console-setup in the migration
comment, that would be a great search keyword. The beauty of
configuration files is that they can contain comments. See the samba
config, for example. It is quite verbose and that really helps when you
configure an extra share, for example.

So if it had said anything like Keyboard settings are now read from
/etc/default/console-setup, I would be perfectly happy. The file
/etc/default/console-setup is quite verbose already, so it is not hard
to adapt it.

It may be a bit harsh to file a bug on a comment, but I think it can
mean the difference between Ubuntu and Gentoo. Thanks for your response.

[Bug 310211] [NEW] MySQL table check fails in ANSI mode

2008-12-21 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mysql-server-5.0

Due to non-standard escaping in /usr/share/mysql/debian-start.inc.sh the
sanity check fails if MySQL is running in ANSI mode. Text strings should
be enclosed in single quotes, as double quotes can mean strings (non-
standard mode) or identifiers (ANSI standard mode). Fixed that in
uploaded file (replacement for /usr/share/mysql/debian-start.inc.sh).

What happens is a bit hard to tell exactly, as it will only show during startup
and I searched the logs for 2 hours and could not find any log entry. However,
the querylog (which is on on my system) clearly showed the wrong quotation.

[Bug 300504] [NEW] Unhelpful comment for disabled settings

2008-11-20 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

When upgrading to Intrepid, the keyboard section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
is commented out, and a comment is added:

# commented out by update-manager, HAL is now used

This leaves the user completely in the dark as to where the HAL is, how
it is configured, etc. Furthermore, the new location is known
(/etc/default/console-setup) and the settings can in be copied there in
some cases. Setting a compose key, for instance, is easy IF you know
where to find it. And setting a compose key should not be difficult in
my opinion. When moving settings, please provide pointers to the new
location.

[Bug 282010] Re: Intrepid: Full Screen OpenGL Games Not Working With Intel Video Card

2008-11-15 Thread DonQuichote
Possibly related: I can use full-screen programs (Battle for Wesnoth,
Briquolo). Unreal Tournament runs slow after upgrade to Intrepid, but
this may be a Wine issue (PSPad runs much slower also, but is not a
fullscreen application).

However, upon closing a full-screen application, I only see my
background image. Like it is on top of everything instead of behind
everything. There are no desktop icons, no menu, etc. I run Xubuntu and
the right-click menu still works. I can fire up applications, which are
started invisibly. I can tell from the fact that some right-mouse clicks
show the context menus that belong to these applications. All programs
that were open before I started the full-screen application are still
open. I can tell by Firefox asking if I want to open the last session.
The only way out (that I know of yet) is to kill the X server.

The output of `lspci | grep Graphics` is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 02)

[Bug 298566] [NEW] apache is installed though another web server is already present

2008-11-15 Thread DonQuichote
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache

The real problem is that there is no such thing as a general web server
package. I run The Abyss web server (see http://www.aprelium.com/ ) and
always take great care not to install packages that depend on Apache.
This probably means that I cannot install packages that would run fine
on this web server. Such packages often depend on apache|lighthttpd,
which leaves no room for other web servers. And there are a lot of them
around. It would be nice if there were an empty package web server
that you could install to satisfy dependencies.

Also, the upgrade to Intrepid Ibex alas installed apache on my system
for no reason. There were no dependencies that needed it. My guess it
that this can be blamed on the install recommendations by default
policy change. In this case, that policy leads to two web servers
fighting each other. Please rethink that policy. Off course, this
problem is linked to the absence of the general web server package, as
there is no way yet for the package manager to know that I already have
a working web server.

1 Release of Ubuntu:
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10
2 Version of the package:
none. I do not want it.
3 What I expect:
being able to tell the package manager that I have a generic, further unknown
web server. Not getting an extra web server on a distribution upgrade.
4 What happend instead:
I got apache with the upgrade to Intrepid Ibex while I already had another web
server running.

When I choose rdp-any, I have to supply an IP address. What do I have
to supply here?

Update:
I can get either GDM working by restarting in safe mode and running xfix OR

[Bug 201701] Re: Greeter appears to be crashing

2008-05-15 Thread DonQuichote
I also had this problem after reinstalling my Wacom Bamboo1 tablet. I had it
working just fine on Gutsy, but the Hardy upgrade breaks every x.org setting
there is. Luckily, I had a backup of my original xorg.conf.
After running all the commands on
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4785779, Xubuntu would try gdm 3 times
and then fail. However, opening a terminal (CTRL-ALT-F1), killing all gdm
instances (type ps -eF | grep gdm to see them) and then running startx got
me back in a normal desktop situation. WITH the tablet working!
Looking at /var/crash, I think it was the pressure applet I downloaded and
installed that was the problem. I attached the crash file, as apport-gtk (not
apport-qt on Xubuntu) only says it is not an official package.

Oh, I probably got the panel applet from http://www.alexmac.cc/tablet-
apps/

Hope this is of any help to you.

[Bug 163616] Re: Failure registering capabilities with primary security module.

2008-03-29 Thread DonQuichote
