[Bug 1697784] Re: RTL wifi module drops connection
Have tested. Problem exists in 4.12-rc5 (today's build). Problem existed in mainline kernel before 4.10.0-22, but one could build the rtkwifi-new package agianst it using nonfree drivers as a workaround - that doesn't build properly against -22. Hvae rolled back to 4.10.0-21 and it seems to work. In 4.12-rc5 daily the problem is slightly different - rather than completely ending the latency grows and grows over a period of time before the connection dies. It may be worse under network load - "seems" so but have not rigorously tested (and does not only occur under load) ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1697784 Title: RTL wifi module drops connection To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1697784/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1697784] [NEW] RTL wifi module drops connection
Public bug reported: have to manually rmmod and modprobe rtl8821ae no messages in dmesg or any logile I can find Even when connected system drops ~1% of packets. Usable but not ideal in 4.10.0-21 I could use https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new which significantly reduced errors (from once in 5 minutes to once in 5 hours, more or less), but on 4.10.0-22 when trying to add the module to the kernel dmesg reports Jun 13 21:45:31 unacceptableBehaviour kernel: [ 262.904550] rtl8821ae: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. [Bug 1000172] [NEW] Network printer install fails, causes printer problems
Public bug reported: Using the system add printer tool makes an unusable network printer (Xerox Phaser 88650 DN) We get the error message Printer does not support IPP/2.0, trying IPP/1.1. Re: [ubuntu-uk] buying a laptop?
I've had great luck in general with IBM (I guess now Lenovo) thinkpads. They're a bit spendier but. Also have a 3 button mouse. Pretty much everything just works, though I have looked typically to make sure I'm getting the right wifi card, etc. thinkwiki has loads of useful info for anything that doesn't work, but aside from the middle-button-scrolling thing, I've not had to do anything since about 8.04. There have been times when linux has been available, though I think a hidden option. You can often find them online without OS (i.e., if it's an off-lease model or somesuch). -g On 19/01/2011 02:33, Paula wrote: I have a Novatech laptop, two years old, older model. This bug seems to affect any Linux (not just Ubuntu) on any Core i3/5 system that is using the integrated GPU. But it does seem as though there may be fix in the wings... With my Samsung Core i3 lappy, the HDMI port does work OK however (and can be adapted to DVI with a cheapish cable) so it isn't the end of the world. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Book costs (was Re: e-books without Adobe Digital Editions)
On 10/11/10 10:20, richard wrote: I know nothing about publishing but if you look at the banks, an online account is usualy a better deal because the costs are lower. There will always be sales for paper books, because sometimes it is nicer to hold a nicely made book in your hands, but when there are enough kindles etc out there e books will be a market on their own, selling at a discount. That is just my prediction, and what do I know? The other aspect that occured to me was that the distribution of books is in fewer hands every year, with a small number of shops choosing the titles that they think will make them the most money. If you are an e book only seller you have a usp right there. Probably the biggest thing is the economies of scale involved. Digital margins are tiny. Print and distribution is dirt cheap at volume (think: people have been doing it for several hundred years and figuring out how to make it cheaper). The bank analogy doesn't exactly make sense as banks are replacing something expensive for them (employees, time, and physical space) with something very scalable and well-understood (web apps). Books switching to ebook is replacing something well-understood and dirt cheap (printing/distribution) with something not so well understood (three major competing formats, a dizzying array of DRM options or not, personal fears in a declining industry, no standard) A big thing is that digital distribution requires re-editing and re-layout to make the book readable on a variety of ereaders. There aren't that many people who know how to do that, therefore supply is restricted, and price goes up (fundamental microeconomics). Furthermore, there's not as high demand, so it appears to be a bit of a boutique item, therefore price goes up. Then there's DRM costs. They do have to license these things. There's all the support staff around dealing with amazon/sony/adobe/etc. The difference between DRM for books and for ebooks, of course, is that you can loan one book out to your mate, but one person (in theory) could make 1mm copies of a book and really put a potential dent in sales. There's probably some sort of middle way that'll eventually happen. The price will come down at some point. Personally, I think (hope!) we'll end up in a world where content publishers will charge either micropayments for the service or a flat monthly charge for, say, groups of newsmagazines/books/whatever, and you'll consume as fast as you read. Right now, the consumer (you and I) are getting the worst end of the stick. I've resorted to the library for most things, which isn't good for the publisher or the retailer. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Clever tricks using vsftpd virtual users to have seperate permissisons
I've not set up an ftpd in some years, but you might look at pure-ftpd I believe that it allows you to map users to /etc/passwd entries (even if those entries have no login permissions) as well as specifying a different ftproot for different users. It was also at the time one of the more secure ftpds. Your mileage may vary. Best, Glen On 04/11/10 15:20, Matt Darcy wrote: Hi Ubuntu uk, This is tricky subject to summerize. I'm pretty confident there isn't a solution to do what I want, but I need a sounding board, so your it. I'm looking at using vsftpd as an open ftp daemon, utilising the virtual user functionality so I don't have to use genuine /etc/passwd or shell based accounts. The issue I've got is that I need multiple users (no problem so far) to then have different read/write access to different directories under the ftp root. The virtual users have no awareness or interaction with the Unix file system permissions, nor do they respect them as they work through the ftpd process owning account. I'm looking at clever ways to do this such as a permissions schema linking into mysql, but it's starting to get a bit over the top. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Server won't start without screen
Do you get to see what happens when the screen is plugged in? i.e,. is it stuck before grub or after? I kind of assume you aren't running X on the server (stock ubuntu server, right?) I know of a hosting company who uses mac minis (though I can't think of who they are at the moment... grumble...) as a server that sits between dedicated machines and virtual servers. Obviously only good for low-intensity i/o tasks. You might try to find them to see if there's something mac-specific that's going on. I would easily put £20 on it being a mac thing that has to be disabled in the mac prom, but I've no idea how to do that (I don't think that apple opens up their firmwares to outside people) Aha! Here's the company. Everything worked fine until at some point a few weeks later the machine was switched off and when turned on again it wouldn't boot up properly (well it wouldn't appear on the network) until a screen was plugged in at which point it booted fine and appeared on the network without any problem. Unfortunately I'm not sure how the unit came to have the power disconnected it is plugged into a UPS all I know is that it was turned off when staff came in in the morning. This same scenario occurred a second time a week or so later and once again a screen was required for the server to be fully operational. When it starts up with a screen I'm told there i I've run a couple of headless servers and never had this issue, it just carries on. That's not to say there maybe a setting where the Mac expects a monitor to be connected. I've seen something along these lines on some PCs although it tends to be more a keyboard or mouse not plugged in rather than a screen not plugged in. Does it boot when the screen is plugged in but turned off? Also, could it be that some cleaner is unplugging the UPS or something thinks that the machine should be turned off to save electricity thinking they're being helpful? If you solve it or not I'd suggest maybe putting something on the plug or a note over the socket saying that the kit has to be kept plugged in and turned on. I've seen some things that you can get which fit round the plug and cover the power switch (although I don't know where you can get them from, maybe Maplins, CPC etc or even an office supplies company maybe?). Re: [ubuntu-uk] What accounting software to recommend
There's not a whole lot in the linux world which equates to quickbooks or sage, unfortunately. It's a massive hole. OpenERP is a solid but massive bit of software which is likely to be overkill. I've had complaints from clients that it's really user-unfriendly (and these were accountants, mindyou) I know of some people who have had good luck with Turbocash (though the developers are a bit odd, and I think the UK chart of accounts is fairly limited...). There's also Postbooks, which apparently *looks* the easiest and cleanest to me, but I've as yet not had a chance to try it out properly. There's a wikipedia page on comparison of accounting systems which may help you out. I would personally be interested to hear what your mate's reaction to the software is, once he has one. -g On 22/10/10 13:49, Will Bickerstaff wrote: For single user, very small businesses try GnuCash: http://www.gnucash.org/ For larger organisations I'd go with something like OpenERP: http://www.openerp.com/ Al Thanks Alan, I'll have a look at these two and find out which Sage he's using, I'll probably give him both and let him decide which best suits his requirements. I don't think scalability is a high priority so am hoping to find something that he will be most comfortable with when making the transition. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Upgrade woes
Hi Barry, You're not by any fortunate chance in London, are you? Can you give us an idea of your filesystem layout? i.e.: /dev/sda1 is /boot /dev/sda2 is /home /dev/sda3 is / or whatever? I am willing to bet you're not getting all the filesystems mounted properly/in their proper place. For instance, in the example above, you'd have: boot to your live CD Open a terminal window Type 'sudo -s' #this should give you a root prompt mkdir /mounts/oldroot mount /dev/sda3 /mounts/oldroot mount /dev/sda2 /mounts/oldroot/home mount /dev/sda1 /mounts/oldroot/boot chroot /mounts/oldroot # you should now have a root prompt that may look a little different # maybe here just try running update-grub2 # then grub-install /dev/sda #assuming your ubuntu install is on /dev/sda # and tell us what the output is. I am assuming here that you have only one OS on this disk and aren't doing anything funky. The bottom three quarters of the window were hidden so I could not select any 'Accept' button. I was unable to move either window to one side, nor shrink either window. The install stopped at this point and my only option was to press the power button. My computer is now dead. I shall have to download the ISO and try a fresh install. Please note that I had added boot options to GRUB in an effort to solve my reliability problems in 10.04. Has anyone else seen this problem? I do not know if this is a bug that needs filing, or another symptom of my faulty install of 10.04. Barry Hi I had exactly the same problem. Whatever I did, I could get not to the window behind. I opened a terminal, killed the updating process. I then ran sudo dpkg --configure -a to finishing configuring the package upgrades that hadn't completed. This partially completed, but exited reporting errors. These errors were being reported as /var/cache/debconf/lock was not released when the update manager process was killed. Searching on launchpad I found the simplest way to release the lock was to sudo rm -rf /var/cache/debconf/* Rerunning sudo dpkg --configure -a then completed without error. I was presented with a number of configuration screens giving me the option to keep or replace a number of configuration files (php, samba, rsnapshot, postfix etc) Once this was completed I then reran apt-get to update, to ensure that everything was updated, which also completed without error. At this point I was confident to reboot and when I did I was able to restart and log into 10.10 I had backed up everything before starting, and also cloned my 10.04 install on to an external USB drive using Clonezilla so restoring my working 10.04 install wouldn't have been too hard. My internet connection is quite slow at work and in the past I have had the update process trip up on some packages that didn't download, so I was prepared for potential problems in the process. However, I have read on this list and other places to not restart the machine if there is a problem as it maybe possible to rescue a seemly failed upgrade, which in this case proved to be correct. I would like to file a bug on this, but I am unsure of the best place to do so. I have searched launchpad and I think I should file it against update-manager, but I wonder if this is the correct package? Could anyone confirm this, or direct me to the correct one? Re: [ubuntu-uk] usb devices and ubuntu 10.04
Hi Paul, I've had no problems with this from, broadly, 7.x to 10.04/10.10. /media should be dynamically creating folder names to mount things. From what I can tell, you have several problems of problems: 1 - the Sansa MP3 player sometimes mounts and sometimes randomly unmounts 2 - the USB hard drive mounts when plugged in directly, but not via the hub 3 - you can only access one USB drive through the hub Is that correct? The behaviour you're describing sounds rather a lot like something I have experienced: a dodgy USB cable and/or connection-- you might check the cable, the socket on the hub, and the socket on the mp3 player. Once you've cleared cables, try this: What is the output of lsusb with: - evertything unplugged - the hub only plugged in (no devices attached to it) - the hub plugged in with 1, then 2 devices attached to it. That'll let you know waht the USB bus is seeing. You might also google the model number of your hub and linux or ubuntu to see if other folks are experiencing the same issue. I would suspect that the system isn't seeing the hub as a hub, so only able to attach one device on to it. Hope this helps. I am really really struggling to explain exactly what the situation is as to me it seems random, sometimes I can plug the music device in and it works. It just seems to randomly work, i am worried as to why something would just unmount for no aparent reason (or appear to) i did manage to get both working, and tried to copied 2 folders of music across to the player only half way through the copy dialog seemed to be stalled, so after a while i ended it, and tried to unmount, i then got another dialog saying it was writing remaining data, which again didn't seem to be doing much, just displaying a status box with another bar moving back and forth quickly. has anyone else had any issues trying to plug in two usb storage devices. has better add-in support, but fewer add-ins... - Calc has a *much* better ODBC interface, unless you're using SQL server on the back-end... Gnumeric kicks Excel up and down the street, if for no other reason than for having support for Monte Carlo simulations and other advanced stats support built-in. Base tosses Access down the road and out the corner, quite frankly, but I don't know who really uses that. Powerpoint is really 10 years ahead of Impress. More default icons and images. Faster with large (100MB) presentations. More image manipulation tools. SmartArt. More and better templates. That being said, the OOO UI team is on Impress first of all. I think there's been a lot of frustration with the Ribbon, and it's understandable. MS has rejiggered the Ribbon in 2010, and I must say, it's a lot better, but it's still a fundamental shift. For me, personally, the Mac 2008 MSO interface, with its floating menus and whatnot is a complete nightmare. Everything seems really cluttered and nonsensical items are put together, and I can't find what I need, ever. I think it's important to recognise the power of the default choice-- which is what we already know. All that being said, however, OOO is a fantastic product, especially at the price. If you're using Alfresco, for instance, it Just Makes Sense. Ditto Sharepoint and MSO. Anyway. when you do the power pull, you could have data corruption for anything that's not written to the filesystem (the details of this are a) very boring and b) vary by filesystem. To avoid problems, stop (or kill) all running programs, and do: sudo halt or sudo shutdown -h now (which is what the poweroff button calls in any case) It's not the end of the world, but I have had wedged systems with unkillable files and whatnot before. Or why not put the drives in your mid-tower? If you're running it most of the time anyway. The best you'll get will be about 12-15w consumption, so maybe doing the math will see if it makes sense to just have a single box vs. the additional capital expense/carbon/energy/etc. of having a separate box. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Preventing a hack attempt
You can't hide /etc/passwd because that's how the system translates userids into usernames (and thus how the system understands whether a user has access to a specific file or not) What you might consider is using non-password authenticated SSH sessions-- you can do this in /etc/sshd/sshd_config (turn passwordAuthentication off) and put public keys in $HOME/.ssh/authorized_keys This isn't 100% secure, but it's often good for end-users who require shell access but perhaps can't be trusted to not use good passwords. Also, the password can't be given out. It may require a bit of fuddling on your end to make sure they're set up (you may need putty and pagent, for instance, if it's a windows client). They keys are still steal-able, but if you put a passphrase on the key it's a bit cleaner. Of course, if the attacker has physical access to the compromised machine (or a keystroke logger or something) then you're perhaps a bit horked anyway. On the upside, it's important to recognise that what you have *is working*-- you detected the attack before it became a problem. I would echo Sean's advice about using nonstandard ports as well. Makes it a bit trickier to find deal with, though not 100% sure. What you want to do is layer loads of 99% solutions up until you get a reasnable assurance. You might also consider using a chroot() environment for your user if that'll work for you. However, someone managed to gain the password to that account on the server then used vi /etc/passwd to gain a list of users, then launched a bruteforce using su against my admin account. (that's what I can gather from the logs) This did not get very far before I saw and kicked the user off and changed all of the passwords, but I would like to know how to prevent this sort of thing happening again. I need to know mainly how to stop the SSH user running su in the first place and how to stop the user seeing files like /etc/passwd Anyone have any suggestions? -- Glen Mehn glen.m...@oba.co.uk skype: glenmehn | blog: http://glen.mehn.net/mba UK: +44(0)7942 675 755 | US: +1 415 704 4737 -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Shredding HDD data
If you really want to do something like this, you'd need to write a bit of C or something that outputs 1s and compile it. You could, I suppose, in python (or even bash) do something like while true() print chr(0xff) though if you do the equivalent in C (or anything compiled) as it'll be much faster, then runYourProg | dd of=/dev/(yourdevice) but I haven't a clue as to why you'd want to do this. It'll still be slower than using /dev/zero (unless, I suppose, you write your own kernel module to create it?) -g On 11/08/2010 12:41, Bill Cumming wrote: Quick question: With dd (and dcfldd) it's east to write 0 (zeros) out to a drive but how can you write just *1 (ones) out instead? Is there any way to bring that back, or even completely delete it? I had a program for windows when i used it, but I cant find anything for linux. For data recovery you can use testdisk (its in the Universe repo for Lucid). As for completely delete it then the only way to be 100% certain is to physically destroy the drive but I have been informed by a KrollOntrack employee (they do commercial data recovery as well as commercial erasing solutions) that 3 overwrites with different data stops them from recovering data from a drive. Also it is important to make sure that when doing secure erases that the bit pattern is different for each wipe (e.g. if you write zeros on the first pass then there should be no zeros in the second). Using one of the Gov approved schemes will usually do this. For most home users a single random wipe will be more than enough as this prevents most people getting at any of the data. Re: [ubuntu-uk] ASP under Ubuntu?
it may be possible to run ASP code under MONO. I'd probably only want to do so, however, in a development situation. Re: [ubuntu-uk] 10.04: 64-bit or 32-bit install?
On 31/07/10 13:32, David wrote: I suspect that this is a bit of an FAQ (albeit one with constantly-changing answers..), apologies if so. I have done some web searching on 64-bit issues, but there's a lot of (also constantly-changing) information to read through.. Short answer (from my perspective): If you're handy enough to make this list, you'll be fine. If you were asking for a computer for your nan, I'd suggest 32 bit. There are a few niggles. More below. [SNIP] Nvidia drivers Fine Firefox (plus a variety of add-ons, any potential issues there?) Fine Flash (in Firefox, particularly BBC iPlayer, 4OD, etc, which are must-haves! Adobe's withdrawal of Flash-64 sounds like a warning..) All works fine-- if you use the Ubuntu packages. They've sorted the 32/64 bit issue (by including the required 32-bit libs. Java plug-in in Firefox Fine (comes in 64 bit) Thunderbird (again, any potential issues with extensions?) None that I know of, though I'd seriously suggest finding a backport of TB 3.1 (indexing issues) In general, OSS == fine OpenOffice, GnuCash, Gimp a local LAMP (P=PHP) set-up, although to be honest I tend to do very little web dev at home these days, mainly at work instead. If I need to install 32-bit apps in a 64-bit OS, is this a painful process? Any particularly convoluted set-up or reliability issues that I need to be aware of? The only niggle I've had is with Adobe AIR and some of the apps-- essentially, they end up with an unresolved dependency. The solution (in this case) was to use the binary (NOT .deb) version of the package, then tweetdeck et all don't demand to be uninstalled due to dependencies. The only thing will be the 32 bit libs you'll need for other packages-- or to recompile them, which typically isn't that big of a deal (if it's OSS). Friendly package maintainers and their mailing lists will probably help you if you can't sort it So, I'd say that 98% of the time it all just works... then, occasionally there's a niggle, which is less than you'd get with OSX or whatever... but seems really annoying 'cos you can't immediately sort it out. If I could also ask a couple of related questions: What's the general view on the size of the swap partition these days? Is 2x RAM still the best policy? I am not 100% sure of this, but I have heard loads of people say, basically, that unless you have *very* specific requirements, more than 2GB of swap (even with 4GB RAM) is overkill. That's what I've got, and it seems to be fine. YMMV, of course. ext3 v ext4? I've heard various grumbles about ext4 being slower (I think it was something to do with rewriting files during software updates in particular? - I've forgotten the exact details), and it also still seems a bit 'new' ..or am I just worrying too much? Go with EXT4. Faster, better journalling, etc. Of course, you will pay, but unless you have *very* specific requirements, go with what works. Alternatively, I've had really good with XFS as well, which is fast, stable, etc. Best of luck!
