I am getting the same issues you are describing on a Dell XPS 17 L702. UEFI booting is not an available option, nor is a BIOS update (checked the Dell site for newer BIOS). I had the same intermittent issue on my Dell laptop. I am booting 12.10 x64 from a SSD drive. Starting with 12.10, the boot time has improved significantly and apparently that is part of the problem. I experimented with placing a service lightdm restart in rc.local but that resulted in a non-functioning touchpad. Michael's tip (#16) works perfectly for me. Nice find! Xorg-edgers ppa is installed on my latpop. Mark Blakeney reported that it affects his Nvidia system but not Intel. My laptop uses the Optimus technology where the Intel HD 3000 chip is the main display hardware and the Nvidia chip is dormant for the most part unless you use bumblebee. Public bug reported: I have a dual screen set up with slightly different resolutions, i.e. external screen is 1920x1200 and the laptop screen is 1920x1080. Taking pictures with the built-in screenshot tool results in a black image with just the mouse pointer showing. But what makes it a serious problem is that the gnome-screenshot stays resident (after Cancel) and pegs one CPU thread to 100%. After a few attempts of taking screen shots, the whole CPU was maxed out!
