[Bug 1887599] [NEW] CPU at100% when playing video
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 20.04, the CPU is utilized 100% when playing a video file and video starts skipping. The machine is a netbook with Celeron N4000 processor and 4 GM RAM. Re: [ubuntu-in] Auto restartting ADSL connection
Ramnarayan.K wrote: so is using a ppp dialer like kppp or gnome ppp a solution ?? You would need to restart the ppp connection in the ADSL modem. You can do that either by telnet (most ADSL modems should have telnet access) or through through the web admin interface. Both these methods can be automated. If you prefer telnet, you would use something like expect (http://expect.nist.gov/). For the web admin panel route, something like Mechanize (http://search.cpan.org/dist/WWW-Mechanize/lib/WWW/Mechanize.pm). I used the 'expect' utility to restart my ADSL modem at 12AM and 8AM, for free download hours. I am sure it can used to restart the ppp connection too. Re: [ubuntu-in] Graphic driver issue
Ubuntu (and all other Linux distros) install a bare minimum set of hardware drivers guaranteed to make it work on a range of hardware at first run - advantage of Freedom - it costs nothing to bundle an already available driver on a Linux CD (or DVD, as is becoming more frequent). I replaced an Asus mainboard having Nvidia graphics with a Gigabyte mainboard having Ati graphics - Ubuntu booted up and asked about Ati restricted drivers. Thats it! The vendor was gaping like a fish - on Windows, this would have entailed at least a low resolution login, with lots of new devices found and what not. -- Rohit V. Re: [ubuntu-in] wi-fi solution discussion
Hi all, After reading through reviews and checking through the HCL and stock availability in stores, I bought a Linksys WRH54G wireless router and a WUSB54GC USB wireless adapter. The wireless adapter is fully supported out of the box - I plugged it in and it came up in Network Manager with the router's SSID, though I haven't yet tested WPA2. I'm still setting up the router. This is not a strictly Linux question, though. Current setup (modem is desktop's gateway): (Desktop:192.168.5.84) (Modem:192.168.5.1) Desired setup (router is everyone's gateway, modem is router's gateway): (Desktop:192.168.5.84) (Router:192.168.5.2) (Modem:192.168.5.1) (Other Machines)---^ (the indicate wired connection, everything else is wireless) Most guides on the net simply say plug in the cable from the modem into the WAN port. But I am not so sure. For one, I have turned off DHCP on the modem. If I try to select static IP as the type of Internet connection on the router, I am stuck at the gateway. The values I enter are: IP: 192.168.5.1/255.255.255.0 DNS: openDNS IPs What gateway should I enter? I am sure I'm getting something basic wrong. Configuring the WAN is the next major block for me. Re: [ubuntu-in] wi-fi solution discussion
Mehul and Onkar, The WRH54G has a dd-wrt firmware available for it - I checked on their site - http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=149761. I plan to use it after getting familiar with the stock firmware's usage. Though its not supported by others like OpenWRT, Tomato, etc. Also, WRH54G has a RJ-45 WAN port, not a telephone line-in port, like an ADSL modem/router. So I cannot replace my ADSL modem yet :-) . I use the D link GLB-502T for ADSL. Ramnarayan, thanks for the links. I am downloading the e-book right now and will continue on this today evening. Regards. -- Rohit V. [ubuntu-in] wi-fi solution discussion
Hi friends. I plan to network three PCs in my home using Wi-Fi - my own, running Ubuntu, my father's PC, running Ubuntu and Win XP and my sister's laptop, running Win XP. I have a Triband connection that I plan to share. I am reading up about various security details like how Wi-Fi users should be responsible enough to use WPA2 encryption and so on. I plan to use Netgear WGR614 router. My own machine will connect through its LAN port. My father's and sister's machines will connect through Wi-Fi. I can't do much about the laptop - its 3 years old and being Win XP, I expect I should be able to get latest drivers supporting WPA2 somehow. My main concern is my father's PC. I plan to use a PCI card there. I am not sure whether the Ubuntu machines can support WPA2 on the Wi-Fi cards. At least that is what I understood from [1]. So if anyone has setup a home Wi-Fi network with WPA2 encryption on Ubuntu, could they please let me know the card make and model? I am in Mumbai and the same model should be easily found here. [ubuntu-in] filesystem queries queries for external drive
Hi friends. I am in a bit of confusion. 1. I have prepared an external drive by putting a 500GB drive in a USB enclosure. I plan to format it with JFS. I was testing with a flash drive. I formatted it with JFS and plugged it in. It mounted correctly, but with root permissions ie. as a normal user, I couldn't do anything useful. How can I make this behave like a FAT32 formatted drive where a normal user can read write by default? 2. I also have a 100GB partition on the internal disk which I'm thinking of converting to JFS. [Bug 291876] Re: DBus error when mounting CD
I got the window again when I tried to use a damaged CD. So my uneducated guess is this error comes when the OS is not able to read some data off the disc sectors. I lightly sandpapered an unwanted CD and tried it and found this is replicable. It might depend on the sensitivity of the drive reading the disc and hence the same disc might not give error in one machine but do so in a second machine. -- DBus error when mounting CD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291876 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[ubuntu-in] bluetooth issues in Intrepid
Hi all. I believe I have messed up bluetooth in Intrepid. I am trying to connect to my cellphone (SE T700) using the ubiquitous bluetooth dongle. 0. I could connect to my earlier phone SE T280 in Hardy and send files using Bluetooth File Sharing. 1. I can see the dongle (using hcitool dev) and the phone (using hcitool scan or hcitool inq). 2. The phone can see my desktop. 3. The bluetooth applet icon doesn't come up automatically when I connect the dongle. I have to manually start the applet. 4. I can pair up from the phone, but not from the machine. 5. The one error message I can remember from four hours of fiddling is that the phone doesn't support OBEX push - I got this when trying out Blueman. Has anyone else faced these problems? [Bug 255801] [NEW] system freezes randomly
Public bug reported: Output of 'lsb_release -rd' Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 The system froze up completely requiring a hard reboot. This occurred multiple times in a row; two times in a day. Running memtest and smartctl queries cleared out the RAM and hard disks. However, going through the /var/log/messages for the day, Aug 5, 2008, I found 'Clocksource tsc unstable' message during the times the system froze up. This freezing appears completely random - hardly possible to duplicate. Rest of the time, the system is running perfectly. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- system freezes randomly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/255801 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [ubuntu-in] system has become unstable
Mehul Ved wrote: Have you run memtest on the RAM? My next suspect would be the hard disk? You can run smart and see what it returns. http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6983 'sudo smartctl -l error /dev/sda' gave a list of errors. Latest error recorded was 12. http://pastebin.com/f32a37289 My other hard disk on /dev/sdb has ZERO errors. One pass in memtest gave ZERO errors in RAM. Ubuntu forums is having a down time right now(!?), but a gist of google results imply impending disk failure... Surprising thing is my machine works just fabulous when it is not acting up. On going through /var/log/messages, I found the following log before the various restarts: ++ Aug 5 09:10:51 mark2 kernel: [ 55.341694] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -236835484 ns) Aug 5 09:15:43 mark2 exiting on signal 15 ++ http://pastebin.com/f307b6625 On 5th August, between 8:30 to 10 AM and between 7:30 to 9:30 PM when the instability occurred, there was a bunch of these unstable messages. -- Rohit V. Re: [ubuntu-in] Foxpro 2.5 or similar software for linux
Rajib Biswas wrote: Just found a Wikipedia entry here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FoxPro_2 which says that Foxpro had been ported to Unix and subsequently to Linux. It may serve my purpose. Can anbody shed more light on it? Where can I download Foxpro for Unix and/or Linux? The only link which had a chance of shedding more light - reference 1 - http://www.at-vantage.com/fpu26_freebsd.html - returned a 404. This is a common query. Linux does not aim to provide win32 software clones. It is more of whatever you can do on windows, can be done on Linux; not whatever software you use on windows, can be used on Linux. That applies to office suites, media playback, programming tools, etc. If you want to run 'Foxpro' on Linux, I think learning SQLite and ncurses will be a good option. Or you can use any of the GUI toolkits for making the Foxpro screens. The resulting project will be superior to Foxpro. -- Rohit V. Re: [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu stickers
Thanks for responding. The ones that shipit provides are quite staid (no offense :-D ) I much prefer the ones here - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PoweredBy. I'm asking around with my contacts if anyone can generate stickers from that. Will keep you updated! -- Rohit V. [ubuntu-in] GTK apps not displaying menu text
I'm facing peculiar problem - the menu text is not getting displayed in Audacity and XMMS. You can find a screen shot of the problem here - http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1776402 - its in the second post. In case it *has* to do something with the IN locale, have any of you faced this problem? Am I missing some library or package (impossible thought that may be when using Synaptic)? -- Rohit V.
