Re: Hi there, I need help to configure Ubuntustudio on my machine

2012-04-15 Thread Melvin Ray Herr
I highly recommend qjackctl (see http://qjackctl.sourceforge.net/ ) for
controlling the jack audio server. If you're running ubuntu studio it
should be installed already. It makes starting/stopping/configuring the
jack server much easier. Jack never runs on computer startup because it is
designed to handle any audio needs from basic to extremely complex. It
therfore has a bewildering array of options that take some time to figure
out. That being said, qjackctl makes using jack about as painless as using
such a complex piece of software can be.

Update:

I got a new, really confusing error.
I played around with jack. I selected hw:1,0 as Input device (which is
the ESI) and hw:1,1 as output (which is also the ESI). Jack is running, BUT

- no sound
- Status output tells me:
XRUN callback (1).
XRUN callback (39 skipped)

The last line about 20 times, one time with (41 skipped) and one time
with (40 skipped), than I halted Jack.

Now I try with hw:1,1 as Input and 1,0 as output - and got the old
error. I reversed to 1,1 as output and 1,0 as input and got the old
error again.

Well, if/when jack is started, only jackified applications or jack
clients will make sound.

In other words, you have to make sure that you can connect the app's
audio outputs to the system playbacks. (See the connect window of
qjackctl. In this context, system means the audio card that jack is
using).

The default sound server in ubuntu(studio) is pulseaudio.
Banshee/rhytmhbox, flashplayer in firefox, etc, are not jackified by
default. To solve this problem you have either to jackify the apps,
use other apps or enable some kind of bridge between pulseaudio (or
alsa) and jack.

As a quick test you can use a jack-friendly audio player, for example,
aqualung. Aqualung will know if jack is active and you will see it in
the connections window.

For the pulseaudio to jack bridge, follow the instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation#Pulse_Audio

If you still have no sound from your onboard card, check playback
levels in alsamixer.

Well, sometimes the ESI is hw:1, sometimes is hw:0. You can give
consistent numbers to the audio cards in a configuration file,
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. This is explained in alsa-project
site, multiple audio cards. As you noted, the site is down so, for the
time being, you will have to check every time in qjackctl setup or
name the card by name instead of by number.

and hw:1,1 as output (which is also the ESI).

The first number is the card (Karte) number, which can change between
reboots. The second number is the device number (Gerät). See aplay -l.

According to arecord -l aplay -l, the ESI has two devices, both of
them are duplex (they can record and playback at the same time) and
the second one (number 1) is digital, IEC958. To access the analog
inputs and outputs, you should choose hw:x,0 as input and output
devices, or once for both in the interface field. (hw:Juli should
default to hw:x,0 where x is the card number for the ESI).

Jack is running, BUT

Try aqualung, see above.

xruns can be caused for many different reasons. By now, increase the
frames/periods value.

BTW, if you don't mind waiting for three weeks or so, I hope
ubuntustudio 12.04 will give you a much better first time experience.

I am confused. Those messages unknown PCM default / unknown PC
Juli... This looks like an alsa problem, i.e., at a lower level than
jack or pulseaudio.

I would try disabling .asoundrc files [1]. There might be two of them:

/etc/asound.conf (probably not existent, but just in case)
~/.asoundrc

The second one, from your report:

# ALSA library configuration file
# Include settings that are under the control of asoundconf(1).
# (To disable these settings, comment out this line.)
/home/matthias/.asoundrc.asoundconf

So, what happens if you comment out the last line? (And then reboot,
or restart the user session)

From your output list of the pci components, the onboard soundcard is also

I also see a second pci sound card in the list which is more than likely hw:1.
I would try a quick test with aplay but with the option switch to use device

The other way to test would be to go to your bios and turn off the onboard

Hello Alexander!

I figured out a problem with Jack, see the output of several commands I

its the manuall for Ardour but goes through alot of other things you need

myself to switch to kxstudio (witch is built from ubuntu studio ) some

music creation with linux is the reason i switched in the first place. my
band is on a tight budget like many others and we have done recordings on a
6 year old laptop from Zepto. its a bit time consuming to learn in the
begining but trust me. you wont ever go back to windows or mac ;)*

The Midikeyboard is conected to the Soundcard by an Midi-cable, the MPD
 via USB.
cat /proc/asound/cards tells me that the soundcard is deteced! It's
listed as 3rd device. I don't know what the second one is, because there is
just the default (onboard) soundcard and the ESI.
If I open alsamixer and select the ESI via F6, there is still no sound. I
don't know where my problem is and google just tells me to use alsamixer
 and cat /proc...
I test by playing the File in /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_**Center.wav
with aplay or with the default music player by clicking on a Music file.

If I use aplay there's an error output:

ALSA lib confmisc.c:1286:(snd_func_**refer) Unable to find definition
 'defaults.namehint.basic'
 ALSA lib conf.c:4184:(_snd_config_**evaluate) function snd_func_refer
returned error: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (1)
ALSA lib conf.c:4663:(snd_config_**expand) Evaluate error: Datei oder
 Verzeichnis nicht gefunden (1)
ALSA lib pcm.c:2212:(snc_pcm_open_**noupdate) Unknown PCM default
aplay: main:660: Fehler beim Öffnen des Gerätes: Datei oder Verzeichnis
 nicht gefunden (2)

 (1) File or Directory not found
 (2) Error opening device: File or Directory not found

Can anyone tell me what I should do now? How can I get that stuff working?
I hope you have enough information to help me. If not, tell me I will post
 it!

 Best regards from Sunny-South-Germany,
 Matthias Beye

Re: Hi there, I need help to configure Ubuntustudio on my machine

2012-03-29 Thread danielmurray01
Hi!

From your output list of the pci components, the onboard soundcard is also
being detected and its modules loaded. I would suspect that this card is known
as hw:0
I also see a second pci sound card in the list which is more than likely hw:1.
I would try a quick test with aplay but with the option switch to use device
hw:3.
The other way to test would be to go to your bios and turn off the onboard
soundcard(s).

Cheers!

2012-03-28 Thread Matthias Beyer

Hi there!
I'm new to this mailinglist, so hello everybody!

Firstly, because I'm new, please tell me where I can find the terms of
use of this ML!
Secondly, I'm from germany and my english is not as good as it should
be! So if you don't understand what I'm talking about, please tell me
and I will find a better wording for what I mean.
