Does anyone actually use nslookup anymore. I thought everyone uses dig these

[ubuntu-uk] Booting to ubuntu with VM, for now -- advice needed

2011-05-10 Thread doug livesey
Hi -- so this is being typed from an Ubuntu VM under Mac OSX.
I've given up the hope of dual-booting for now -- maybe I'll try again
sometime later with 10.04.
However, I have 8 gig RAM on my MBP, yet seem only to be able to assign less
than 4 gig to my ubuntu image in VirtualBox -- I'm guessing because
VirtualBox isn't clever enough to figure out that I have two modules (both
report okay in Snow Leopard).
Is it possible to run a VM that has access to the majority (or, potentially,
all) of your processor and RAM?
Is there a better tool than VirtualBox that would allow me to do this?
I don't want to get too invested in this image if there's a better way to do
it out there.
Cheers for any & all help,
   Doug.

2011-05-10 Thread Mike Paglia
You do NOT need any CD to connect to a mail server or any Internet service
all Internet protocols are open. The CD just Brands a windows based PC to
the provider you are with. Make sure in your mail server settings that you
have a valid POP3 or SMTP server for BT.

You can use nslookup to find a valid entry for your provider or just ask
them.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] End of Skype on Linux?

2011-05-10 Thread Mike Paglia
I don't believe at all that this is the end of the linux client! Microsoft
are a huge concern who are out to make money. I believe they see there own
failings in the VOIP world and like most other companies where technology is
short they buy in from outside.

I see this as a positive step and coming from me a MAC and Linux user and a
prominent hater of the beast that is Microsoft says a lot.

Develop the product make it more open thats the way forward!

Skype as you all know is just one of the many VOIP/SIP providers out there
this just means it will make the competition work harder and show what is
possible with free software.

Skype is $600+ million in debt and and last year lost $7m more. I
wouldn't call that profitable.

Even though it works reasonably well, Linux Skype client is lagging
Windows and hardly gets regular updates. An MS ownership will
definitely be the last nail in the coffin.

[ubuntu-uk] Has anyone got 5.1 audio working from the rear jacks of a Nvidia ION board in 10.10?

I get stereo on the headset fine but can't get it to put out 5.1 sound.

I've a Nvidia ION board (Zotec IONITX-F-E)
In XP the audio jacks work fine giving me 5.1 sound when i use my 5.1
headset.
But in Ubuntu 10.10 i only get left & right outputs.

I've started a thread in Ubuntu Forums

Lot's of people having problems with 5. audio via HDMI cable but none with
rear sound jacks.

Anyone got any ideas to try??

Ridiculous. Skype's ability to pierce all forms of NAT and firewall puts
it miles ahead of MSN.

It's easy to assume everything MS does is evil, and specifically bad for
Linux users. They are no friend of ours, clearly, but that doesn't
translate to making bad business decisions out of spite.

Because "Skype" is approximately synonymous with "VoIP" to most people -
there's no sense getting rid of all that good brand at all, especially

I cant see why. If they mess around with the protocol then all they would
do is start to loose many paying customers for Skype that use Linux. As
Microsoft look to do more things on the web they have been making them more
friendly to systems other than their own.

If they do something to restrict users then they will have less customers
and something else may be adopted as a Skype replacement.

Thank you
