[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1159654] [NEW] Crash when highlight-dragging text

2013-03-25 Thread Phazonmutant
Public bug reported:

When I'm browsing online, I unconsciously highlight and deselect random
text on the page. Sometime when I drag the text briefly X will crash.
The crash consistently occurs at the moment the text-drag starts or
right after.

I've tried to reproduce the bug intentionally but can't, but I
consistently get X crashes every 5 hours or so of surfing online. I use
Chromium as my browser if it's relevant.

The Xorg.0.log.old has some details about a segfault at the end, I'm
pretty sure that lines up with the crash.

2013-03-25 Thread Stan Schymanski
UPDATE:
I re-installed Ubuntu 12.10 from scratch on a new hard drive, no virtualbox
installed yet and I keep getting both false and real GPU lockups. So it seems
like a problem in the 3.5 kernel, which carries through to the 3.8 kernel.
Would the problem likely go away if I changed computers and used one with a
real graphics card instead of the on-board one?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1097315] Re: Xorg hangs in drm_helper_connector_dpms

2013-03-25 Thread Justin Ossevoort
I must have missed that kernel in my testing, because I've been working with
linux-image-3.8.0-13-generic=3.8.0-13.23 for about 2 days now without any
problems (3.8.0-12 still had problems for me according to my notes).
So it appears to have been fixed (though the fix was a different upload than
the one for which it was resolved).

Thanks for the good work!

2013-03-25 Thread Bruce Pieterse
I'm getting lockups a few times a day now on 12.10. From the syslog today I got:
Mar 25 15:30:29 hostname kernel: [22367.850510] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung]
*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
Mar 25 15:30:29 hostname kernel: [22367.850880] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6
on, RC6p off, RC6pp off

I also got this message prior to the above error messages:
Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359940] ACPI Error: No handler for Region
[CMS0] (880159a31558) [SystemCMOS] (20120320/evregion-376)
Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359956] ACPI Error: Region SystemCMOS
(ID=5) has no handler (20120320/exfldio-306)
Mar 25 15:18:45 tank kernel: [21664.359970] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution
failed [\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.EC0_._Q33] (Node 880159a3cde8), AE_NOT_EXIST
(20120320/psparse-536)

I have installed acpi-rtc-dkms_1.0_all.deb as this fixed the above ACPI
Error last time.

What is worse is that apport seems to be failing at submitting the data
as I have the dialog box about a gpu hang popup four or five times
within two to three minutes. I choose the desired frequency and then
click next and it starts all over again.

Regarding apport, the problem was a missing python package: python-
launchpadlib. I have run into another problem with apport: TypeError:
'unicode' does not have the buffer interface. I will try and submit
more information when I get the time fix this.

Workaround that worked for me was to remove gnome-desktop and replace it

My symptoms are: I lose my window manager.

I cannot get this to happen at will, but I think this last time Chromium
was unresponsive, while other windows/applications (while undecorated)
were still responsive.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-03-25 Thread Linus van Geuns
I am using 12.04 x86_64 and since a few days, my Ubuntu informs me about
problems, which seem to relate to xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal.
Sometimes, the whole computer (GUI hangs, no reaction on mouse/keyboard, can't
switch to the terminal) hangs for several seconds. A few minutes ago, the
machine completely froze and needed a hard reset.

May this be the same issue or is it a new one with the lts-quantal backport?
What info do you need?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160037] [NEW] Since I updated to 12.10 Nvidia crashes DEL E6410

2013-03-25 Thread bruce
Public bug reported:

I updated from a very stable 12.04(LTS) to a unreliable 12.10. Cannot
get nvidia driver to load even when following following instrucions:

Before switching to the nvidia drivers you need to install linux-source
and linux-headers. After the source is installed, try switching to the
nvidia drivers.

Here is how:

Switch to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1).

Login as your username.

Install linux source (sudo apt-get install linux-source) and headers
(sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic).

Uninstall nvidia driver - this depends on which version you installed
(sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-
current-updates or sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304).

Reinstall nvidia driver (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates).

If it successfully installs, restart the computer (sudo shutdown -r
now).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160045] [NEW] GPU hangs, error messages and several instances of apport-gtk running

2013-03-25 Thread Budoc
Public bug reported:

From the updates around last Friday or Saturday, I now get repeated
dialogue boxes with System program problem detected and Sorry, Ubuntu
12.10 has experienced an internal error. The executable path in the
latter error is /usr/share/apport/apport-gpu-error-intel.py. several
instances of apport-gtk run in the background maxing out the CPU but
nothing ever happens - I had to submit this error bug using ubuntu-bug.

This bug may be related to Bug #1073626 or bug #1140716. I'm reporting
this as a distinct bug as unlike the former bug, I do see brief freezes
(for instance, in scrolling Firefox windows) and the gpu hangs appear to
be genuine prior to the dialogue boxes being displayed, and unlike the
latter, rolling back to a previous kernel version does not solve the
problem.

Please accept my apologies if this behaviour is related to one of the
bugs above.

Ubuntu release: 12.10

What I expected to happen - no gpu hangs, no repeated dialogue boxes and
apport-gtk to do something.

What happened instead: frequent gpu hangs, repeated dialogue boxes and
several instances of apport-gtk running whilst no progress is observed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1158889] Re: sandybridge m gt2+ GPU Lockup render.IPEHR:0x41800000

2013-03-25 Thread Jeremy McNeal
Great info but without a computer science degree and years of training
I'm guessing this info falls on deaf ears.

Was a fix released per the post by Chris Wilson (ickle) or do we still
have the issue? This is affecting 2 standard issue Lenovo t420's. A
common computer for programmers to own I believe.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1012879] Re: 12.04 Screen freezes, keyboard stops responding, mouse poitner continues to work

2013-03-25 Thread Jherico
When this occurs I'm also unable to use the ctrl-alt-F1 shortcut to
switch out of the X server and into a console. This is happening on two
of my machines. One a lenovo thinkpad with an Intel video chip, the
other is a desktop with an nVidia chip.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 972324] Re: server fails to start up if TMPDIR is set to something on a different filesystem from /var/lib/xkb

2013-03-25 Thread Alec Warner
There may also exist a security issue, where user alice creates
specially crafted keymaps in /tmp/$HASH.xkm and then user bob launched X
and the X system tries to re-use alice's evil keymap.

I'm unsure if the X server keymap loader is exploitable, but it is
likely that keymaps should not be shared between users in this way (if
nothing else, alice can upload a wacky keymap and bob may not know how
to turn it off.)
