[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1137817] Re: [ivb] System freeze after high memory usage
I want to describe the problem again, as I've watched it in the last weeks: I have freezes with kernel 3.8 and 3.9. It seems that the 3.8.8 is more stable - but the system still freezes randomly. In very rare cases, the system reboots immediately after the freeze (one of 10 freezes). I am using the kernel option i915.reset=0. I have tested the following kernel versions : 3.8.1, 3.8.2, 3.8.3, 3.8.4, 3.8.8 and 3.9-rc1/rc4/rc5/rc6/rc8. I can't see any remarkable error messages in the log files and I am unable to collect any data when the system freezes. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1137817 Title: [ivb] System freeze after high memory usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1137817/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173074] [NEW] Nouveau freezes after suspend/resume in Ubuntu 13.04 / 3.8.0
Public bug reported: Before updating to Raring yesterday, I first fully disabled the Xorg- edgers PPA (by ppa-purge) and was therefore switched back to the Nouveau driver. Then updated my system from Quantal to Raring. Afterwards, I noticed that after a suspend/resume the greeter would not appear or hang completely. I was intermittently able to move the cursor, but the GUI would not respond to hovering or clicking. I did not experience this bug in Quantal with kernel 3.5, but I rather quickly switched to the proprietary driver for performance reasons. I am on a laptop with NVidia GeForce 130M video card on Raring with kernel 3.8.0, no experimental drivers in use. Attached is also a dmesg log from a previous time this occurred, with me trying to recover from the situation by various means - there are a lot of nouveau-related error messages in it. Ctrl-alt-backspace does nothing, SysRq+K does what it is supposed to do but to no avail, restarting lightdm obviously does not help. To reproduce: 1. Boot 2. Suspend 3. Resume Observed behaviour: The greeter does not appear or hangs completely, switching to another VT is initially impossible, after a certain period of time nouveau starts spitting out error messages to the screen and it is then again possible to switch to another VT. Sometimes X randomly restarts and shows the boot-time greeter, where I can log in, but after that the system freezes again. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173077] [NEW] syndaemon lies about its functionality, -R doesn't use XRecord
Public bug reported: With a friend we checked the processor wakeups of my laptop with powertop. We spotted syndaemon. Investigating it, I found out that it polls, although an option was set to block and wait using some XRecord extension of X11. The option -R is also set in the current configuration of syndaemon in 12.10. Also the man page doesn't tell one about the deactivated -R option. I compiled it myself, with the option compiled in (need to install libxtst-dev) and it blocked and waited like expected. When I read about the lengthy bugreports of ancient times about polling in syndaemon. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input- synaptics/+bug/906987 As I understand them, X11 crashes randomly when XRecord is used. And the chosen solution was to deactivate the usage of XRecord in syndaemon. I am not satisfied with the situation. * man page shouldn't list -R if it is not compiled in; it was misleading to me * syndaemon shouldnt be started with -R, when it has no affect; it was misleading to me * there should be a power measurement documented somewhere which defends polling against power drainage; the decision is weird on battery powered devices * XRecord should be deactivated in X11; who guarantees that another app than syndaemon comes by using XRecord? * XRecord should be fixed in X11 (the bug description and tried fixes arent exhaustive by far!) ** Affects: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173077 Title: syndaemon lies about its functionality, -R doesn't use XRecord To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/1173077/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 822872] Re: LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Key should be equivalent to RightAlt+Key
The Ctrl+Alt equivalence to AltGr is a Windows workaround to the fact that some keyboards didn't have an AltGr (such keyboards are still sometimes found in the US) to enable people with such keyboards to attempt to write languages like Spanish and English (okay, there are other ways of writing words like façade and naïve, but Windows didn't support those either, and indeed the Ctrl+Alt technique still leaves many characters out - so copy-paste from charmap or autocorrect bindings are still needed on Windows to write many languages). This is a reasonable workaround in that system for the following reasons: 1. They were stuck for anything else to try, because there simply wasn't an AltGr key on those keyboards. 2. They don't have many uses for other Ctrl+Alt bindings, and those they do use (Ctrl+Alt+Delete of course) don't have AltGr bindings on most keyboard layouts. It remains a reasonable workaround for that system, because it's a fixed workaround for that system - this leads to item 2 remaining true, and people don't create Ctrl+Alt bindings. Strictly, that last point isn't true; people sometimes do program bindings to Ctrl+Alt combos that have no built-in binding in their locale, and then have internationalisation problems, but the workaround dug a hole that it's now next to impossible to dig out of because so many Windows users are used to it. This is not a reasonable workaround on other systems. 1. It isn't needed for most keyboards (though admittedly such keyboards do still exist). 2. There are a large number of cases where Ctrl+Alt is bound to something. Ctrl+Alt L will default to locking the screen, Ctrl+Alt T will launch a terminal window; clearly we cannot have those happening when someone tries to type a letter, or vice versa. Windows did something decades ago that seemed like a good idea at the time, and arguably was, and has to live with the negative consequences because Windows users are used to it. *nix did something different decades ago that seemed like a good idea at the time to people who did have AltGr keys, was largely invisible to most who didn't (who mostly make little use of the characters it allows anyway), and has to live with the fact that it confuses Windows users because *nix users are used to it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xkeyboard-config in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/822872 Title: LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Key should be equivalent to RightAlt+Key To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/822872/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I had the same problem with 12.10 (not out-of-the-box but after installing updates for the first time). Under 13.04, it works on a Live-USB-Key, but then stops working after a fresh install. Upgrading the system to lastest version doesn't help. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173074] Re: Nouveau freezes after suspend/resume in Ubuntu 13.04 / 3.8.0
Just accidentally suspended my machine after several hours of uptime - so here's another dmesg transcript. It contains some more error messages that I did not see the previous time. After resume, this time my screen remained black. After about 15 seconds a lot of error messages filled my screen, and then lightdm seemingly restarted showing me the boot-time greeter. I was then able to switch back and forth to another VT. After trying to log in through the greeter, the screen went black again. Pressing SysRq+K after a while made the empty Unity desktop appear, yet completely frozen with my keyboard lights indicating a kernel panic. ** Attachment added: Another kernel log transcript, containing some more error messages. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1173074/+attachment/3655095/+files/dmesg.3.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173074 Title: Nouveau freezes after suspend/resume in Ubuntu 13.04 / 3.8.0 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1173074/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173211] [NEW] Dual boot problem in Raring Ringtail
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Dual LG monitors strange ( functionalless) behavior in Ubuntu 13.04 when unselecting Setting/Display/Mirror displays. Everything except the current working panel of Settings is visible. Besides the menu panel selection disappearing, the panel border of Settings vanish. This leaves me with no method of closing it... even Alt-F4 fails. I have no way to check anything. CPU: 64AMD, Monitors: Two LG Flatron E2250T-PN (one through the HDMI port, other through the DVI port), Graphics Card: MSI R6670. Works fine on Ubuntu version 3.5.0-17 in Generic Mode. Later versions, 3.5.0-25 3.5.0-26, have 'other' problems (not related to this bug report). Booting from a DVD with Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, select the 'demo' mode, and everything looks good, except mirrored on the two monitors. Maybe there's a work-around. But, I'm a programmer, damn it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173335] [NEW] Resolution continually switches with dual monitors + screen flickering
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I've had this bug since Ubuntu 12.04 and have battled with it for 8+ months. Originally, switching from 11.10 to 12.04, I experienced bad screen flickering (3-45 seconds between flickers) and could not find the issue. I was also not able to run multiple monitors because when I plugged in the HDMI cable, the resolution between screens would continually change (every ~2 seconds) and would not settle on a configuration. I finally was able to fix the issue by switching kernel versions to the 3.4 kernel (back when I had 12.04). When I upgraded to 12.10 (upgrading the kernel again to the default shipped with 12.10), I had the same issue and reinstalled the 3.4 kernel and fixed the issue. Now I'm back to the same issue after upgrading to 13.04. I have screen/window flickering at random intervals and I cannot run an external monitor (although, I can get about 10 minutes out of it before it resets configurations for me). I can't reinstall the 3.4 kernel as there is no version for ringtail. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173074] Re: Nouveau freezes after suspend/resume in Ubuntu 13.04 / 3.8.0
And another freeze + corruption, this time just at random during use (just firefox and gnome-terminal, nothing too special). Once again, lightdm respawned automatically (with a functional greeter) but the screen corruption remained, totally freezing after login. Find attached the relevant excempt from kern.log. Events: at 14603 the power cord is unplugged (switch to battery power), at 16009 the desktop freezes (while trying to unhide the Unity main sidebar, which I have hidden by default), I press ctrl-alt-backspace to try to restart X (nothing happens), the screen gets corrupted while the greeter appears, I try to ctrl-alt-backspace another time, then try to login, then the screen freezes completely. Finally, I do a SysRq+REISUB to recover. ** Attachment added: A small but relevant excempt from kern.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1173074/+attachment/3655339/+files/kern.excempt.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173074 Title: Nouveau freezes after suspend/resume in Ubuntu 13.04 / 3.8.0 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1173074/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1173393] [NEW] Both my IGD Intel 4000HD and discrete ATi Radeon are powered on by default
Public bug reported: I have a Dell Insprion 14z (Inspiron 5423) and I'm running 13.04. The machine has an Intel 4000 HD and Radeon 7550M/7570M/7650M By default, both graphics cards are powered up, even though only the integrated Intel is used: $ sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch 0:DIS: :Pwr::02:00.0 1:IGD:+:Pwr::00:02.0 The same was the case in 12.10. By default, the machine heats up terribly and the fan blasts full-tilt, with battery life affected. Each time that I reinstall Ubuntu, I have to manually edit /etc/rc.local to add the following above the exit 0: echo IGD /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch As far as I can tell, this makes no difference to performance, as by default the ATi/AMD card isn't doing anything anyway. I appreciate that, long term, the problem will hopefully be solved by powering up the discrete card as-needed and switching to that, but until we reach hybrid graphics Nirvana, perhaps the sensible option is to just turn off the discrete cards by default. I assume that it takes some jiggery-pokery to make the discrete card do anything, so adding another step to that seems less important than making sure that machines in the default setup don't overheat and have poor battery life. With the new Intel chips/drivers, they are actually a pretty good option anyway - I'm driving a 1900x1200 external monitor off mine, along with the 720p laptop monitor. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1155838] Re: raring: corrupted display on LVDS when I disconnect my HDMI output
But this bug report is not about an arbitrary set of bugs that produce the same symptoms; it's about corruption seen on *my* laptop, corruption that did not clear up when I tested the kernel fix - which is why I un- duped this bug from bug #1157678. It *is* fixed with the current version of xserver-xorg-video-intel in raring.
