[Unattended] Logging in as Network Administrator

2004-04-07 Thread IT Helpdesk

Pat

Please explain what I am doing wrong.

Ok,

In the unattended.txt I have placed the following:

[Identification]

JoinDomain=xxx.com.au

DomainAdmin=xxx.com.au\administrator

DomainAdminPassword=x

I presume that the
unattended.txt just works for the first time that Windows 2000 starts?

I then edit the postinst.bat
(I think that is what it is called) and I then change the line:

todo.pl “autolog.pl –logon=0”
into todo.pl “autolog.pl –logon=1 –-user=administrator –-domain=xxx.com.au
-–password=x”

Then in the base.bat I use
the todo.pl “autolog.pl –logon=1 –-user=administrator –-domain=xxx.com.au
-–password=x line again.

I must be doing something
wrong here. When Windows 2000 finishes loading it installs Perl fine and then
reboots and logs in as Network Administrator yet for some reason drive Z is no
longer mapped so everything obviously stops.

As I have been using the
Unattended almost since the beginning I am not new to it but this is the first
time that I am logging into the domain as Network Administrator so that I can install
network printers etc etc.

I am sure I am only making a
small mistake somewhere and would greatly appreciate your help.

Kind Regards

RE: [Unattended] Mailing List

2004-04-07 Thread Mangano, Aron
Thanks again Pat

At what stage do I insert the autolog.pl script...ie do I need to put this
into the base.bat or beforehand?

Also should the format be similar to this todo.pl "autolog.pl --logon=1
--user=administrator --domain=xxx.com.au --password=xxx" etc etc

Yes, I haven't tried the linux disk yet, but I will next time.

You patch the registry to use the Winlogon\AutoAdminLogon mechanism.
We ship a utility script which will do this for you; see
.

This is possible in principle, and I would consider patches if they
are clean, but I am unlikely to implement it.

The Linux-based boot disk already does this, however. You might give
it a try :-).

Jeff:

Thanks for your response. After posting yesterday, I used a manual
procedure to get things set up on a PC, but would very much like to look at
your scripts to help me automate this process.

Unfortunately, I am unable to access the scripts at the URLs in your

I could find no step-by-step instructions either. It appears as though
everyone that is doing this is using custom scripts to do so.

I place the following scripts in z:\scripts\

ftp://www.hansonsystems.com/unattended/Start_Apps_Only_Install.bat
ftp://www.hansonsystems.com/unattended/AppsOnly_Set1.bat

>From any workstation, logged in as a user that has permission to map a drive
to my unattended share
[ \\ntinstall\install ]
I can launch Start -> run ->
"\\ntinstall\install\Start_Apps_Only_Install.bat"
The Z: drive is mapped using mapznrun.bat then appsonly_set1.bat is called
to install perl and then use todo.pl to install the programs required.

Hopefully this or something similar to this can be rolled into unattended.

RE: [Unattended] language dependent updates

2004-04-07 Thread DE-LOS-SANTOS,ORIOL (HP-Spain,ex1)
What I'm working on is in using Microsoft SUS (Software Update Services) to
download all the latest patches and upgrades from the selected language to
the unattended upgrade directory.

Then it is necessary to create the script that installs the downloaded
patches.

This avoids the need to search for the download locations. The main problem
is that the upgrades don't have the standard names that we usually download
from Microsoft.

Anyone has worked on this before?

AW: [Unattended] connect problem...

2004-04-07 Thread m . frei
When you boot into a DOS and start your network client for DOS, you need
a real name for your server, not an IP Address. This probably comes from
the network Client being used. There may be a client around which works
for DOS and understands IP Addresses for the server name.

I'm not quit sure, but this may work if you use the Linuxboot CD.

In the unattend.txt file you can add a setting "AutoLogonCount=xx" and,
where you can replace the xx with the number of times your pc should logon
automatically without needing you to enter anything. Keep in mind that if
you set this setting too high, your PC will logon automatically until all
automatic logons have been used up. This setting should be under the section

Add something like this to the "append" line of pxelinux.cfg/default:

console=ttyS0,9600

According to linux/Documentation/serial-console.txt:

The format of this option is:

console=device,options

device: tty0 for the foreground virtual console
ttyX for any other virtual console
ttySx for a serial port
lp0 for the first parallel port

options:depend on the driver. For the serial port this
defines the baudrate/parity/bits of the port,
in the format PN, where is the speed,
P is parity (n/o/e), and N is bits. Default is
9600n8. The maximum baudrate is 115200.

You can specify multiple console= options on the kernel command line.
Output will appear on all of them.

Add something like this to the "append" line of pxelinux.cfg/default:

Ok, I get this:

I tried it with just "console=ttyS0,9600" and with "console=tty0
console=ttyS0,9600". Both times I got the same error. Both times only
over the serial, not on the physical console.

When I didn't have the "console=tty0" entry, I get no output after "Ok,
booting the kernel" on the screen (which is expected).

With it, I don't get any output after "Freeing unused kernel memory:
112k freed".

Maybe this is because /dev/ttyS0 does not exist on the boot disk :-).

I will roll a new pre-release of Unattended tonight and get back to

Thank you for testing this.

Being someone who understands more or less what is going on, I know its not an issue.
For someone
with less expertise seeing something like that might scare them :) Not rightfully so,
but
nonetheless its enough to at least raise a brow. Fixing it should be a low priority
but on the radar
somewhere.

You might need the console devs on the initrd.

OK, I have uploaded 4.1-pre2 to
. It has device nodes for
/dev/ttyS0 through ttyS3.

Give it a whirl and let me know what happens. Thanks again!

No go. If the order is "console=tty console=ttyS0,9600", I get:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 112k freed
WELCOME!!!
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
 Master script exited!
bash-2.05b# cd /dev
bash-2.05b# ls
console kmem port random tty2 tty5 ttyS1urandom
core mem pts tty tty3 tty6 ttyS2zero
full null ram1 tty1 tty4 ttyS0ttyS3
and if the order is the other way around, I again only get kernel
messages on the serial port (no script output).

Sigh. Think first, patch second.

The problem is that we are trying to launch bash shells on virtual
consoles 2 and 3, and then /etc/master on virtual console 1. None of
this makes any sense if you are using a serial console.

I have taken a crack at working around this and uploaded a new
prerelease to . It may
not work, but at least it should fail differently...

Is there any way to get just the initrd (and possibly the bzImage, if
needed) without having to download all 15megs?

Ok, now when I have the order at "console=tty console=ttyS0,9600", it
all works as expected (master script to the serial, kernel messages to
both serial and tty).

It is beyond weird to see the winnt.exe running in teraterm pro. :)

However, I still get the errors I described in an earlier mail ("Bugs in
4.1", to the dev list).
