Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
The way it is today the debian packages are useless and frustrating. I don't want to offend anyone for continuing work on lms, but offering non working packages is worse than offering no packages at all. They're not non-working. They just don't work with your OS/architecture combination. I've brought up the topic a few months back. There's been some discussion around the Linux packaging, but no consensus. I fully agree, that having a one size fits all package doesn't scale. Incidentally I looked up 6.5.3 yesterday. The .deb package was one of the smallest packages we provided. It probably only supported i386/Perl 5.8 or the like. Today we support ARM (hf/sf), PPC, i386, x86_64, and Perl 5.8 - 5.20 (not all combinations, obviously). And we're already one Perl version behind... FWIW: is there any way to help you splitting up lms in architecture specific packages with correct dependencies using as much packages from the host as possible? I once choose squeezebox because of it's platform independent free software support and I'm really happy there are still people caring about it. :-) Currently I have running four squeezebox devices and still one or two in some boxes from the last move. I was running lms 7.7.3 from the debian packages on a plain ordinary i386 wheezy machine which I upgraded yesterday and now none of my devices (2× boom, 1 radio, 1 controller) works anymore. I can't install from the repositories over aptitude because some size mismatches. There's one big package for all architectures for a package I supposed to be platform independent because it's written in a scripting language. Issues with Perl 5.20 are known for over a year and i386 seems to be some exotic platform around here. As a long time (over 10 years) debian user this is contrary to all my debian experience. ;-) Would have been better you dropped your debian packages and let folks build everything by themselves. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
On my Debian Jessie box changing the entry in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/squeezecenter.list to point to the "unstable" branch got me LMS 7.8.1 which installed and ran first time, which is great. Thanks to everyone on this thread. Questions- - No mention of the 7.9.x branch in Synaptic Package Manager ? - The package description text that displays in Synaptic doesn't mention the close coupling the system has to the OS's Perl version. As getting it wrong silently breaks LMS it would be good to see this mentioned! - If the 7.x.x versions of LMS are dependent on specific versions of Perl is it not possible to have this dependency described in the package definition? I thought that was the added-vaue that packaging systems like apt gave you, or is that a naive view? BTW, a message for the maintainer(s) of Logitech Media Centre- The reason I logged back into these forums after 5 years (!) was that LMS and my Squeezebox Duet are a part of our daily lives. I rip every CD I buy to FLAC, save it on our home server, and play the music through the Duet Hi-Fi amp. Aside from a few niggles like tagging funnies and the slow wakeup time of the Duet remote it's one those rare bits of technology that "just works", extremely well. Like a lot of customers I was very sad to see Logitech kill off the "local network" product line, and I've yet to find a product that does the same as well, let alone better. So I appreciate the efforts that are being made to keep LMS alive and updated. We wouldn't shout so loud when it broke if it wasn't such a great little product ;-) colin_e's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33457 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102022 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
It seems like every time a major distro jumps to a new version of Perl, there is copious gnashing of teeth and spawning of new threads here. At the risk of putting my ignorance on parade, I'll ask: why not distribute a runtime of perl with the linux LMS? It would only solve part of the problem. There's not "the" Linux. There are different distributions on different platforms, too. Plus Linux users usually have the tools and are used to compiling stuff. In particular users running bleeding edge distributions should be willing to do so. That said we could probably simplify or streamline the compilation of the modules required. Put the check for requirements at the very beginning in stead of letting the compilation fail after 30 minutes with little indication about the missing pieces but a huge log file :-). It's already done with the Windows version. Every version of squeezeplay includes a runtime of lua, doesn't it? I notice that ActiveState has perl packages for Linux. And the current nightly LMS deb install package, now that it includes all architectures, is more than twice the size of the Windows install package anyway. And, as I mentioned recently in a thread trying to find a solution for this, about 6x the size required. The ReadyNAS packages (linux, too, but only for one of their architectures) come in at about 22MB. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
Ah, I now realize that I need to use the buildme.sh in vendor, a whole different ball of wax. I've got that built now. Is there any way to unravel this so that it uses the dependencies from the OS rather than compiling from source? See http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102110 - not with a lot of uncertainty wrt. compatibility. There's a reason we're doing this. The FreeType tests kept giving a bunch of errors, so I just disabled the tests, heh. Yeah, the support for right-to-left (Hebrew) can easily be dropped in most cases. I stopped building those two modules a while ago... -- Michael ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
So I ran the buildme.pl script, and it was successful but I still get the Perl errors upon startup. It looks like there are binaries in "/usr/share/squeezeboxserver/CPAN/arch/5.18/x86_64-linux-thread-muti/auto" and there is no corresponding 5.20 folder. These binaries are in the Logitech git repository, with no source code, and no build script that I can see. Once buildme.pl has done its job, you'll have to move the newly created files to above CPAN folder, creating a new 5.20 sub-folder. -- Michael ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Me three. I've built it before and journeyed down the rabbit hole of dependencies, not too excited about doing it again. Maybe I'll setup a virtual machine so I can use it to build it the next time. rpress's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31544 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102022 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

I'd really appreciate a solution to get LMS 7.8 working with perl 5.20 that does not involve building packages myself, as that is not my strongpoint. regards, Roland ps. no relation to user Roland0 above roland0b's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63311 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102022 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
Is there a planned date for a 5.20 build? No. Debian jessie (testing) has recently moved to 5.20 so I suspect many people have (or will shortly) see conflicts. I've failed before trying to do a build so if there's an impending nightly built on 5.20 I'll hang on but if it's some way off I might need to retry the self-build. The relevant aspect is if your architecture / perl version combination is supported by the binaries. See 'here' (https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver/tree/public/7.8/CPAN/arch) for details. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
Just thought of something. Would building LMS myself really fix it? Isn't the debian unstable LMS package already built on debian unstable (and the testing package built on testing and the stable package built on stable)? Maybe the builds lag behind the latest unstable a bit since debian unstable uses rolling updates? Just wondering how that works. It looks like there are nightly LMS builds running for testing and unstable since you can see the time stamps updated every day on the packages at http://debian.slimdevices.com/pool/main/l/logitechmediaserver/ but maybe the systems aren't updated as often. crabbz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63245 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102022 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Thanks, I hadn't thought about binaries being available. For now I have the debian testing package running on another machine so I'm ok. Just wanted to let someone know about the issue. crabbz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63245 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102022 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] LMS debian unstable package fails to run with perl 5.20
afaik, there are no pre-built binaries for perl 5.20 (yet?), so you'll either have to downgrade perl to 5.18, or build LMS yourself.
