[libreoffice-users] Calc sheet name

2013-05-06 Thread IGraham
LibreOffice 4.0.2.2
Calc

This is just me playing, nothing important

Is it possible to 'reference a cell in a sheet tab name'. I have a index
sheet and I'd like to name other sheets (in the sheet tabs) depending upon a
name in a cell within the index sheet ?

How would I go about that ? Is it possible ?

Thanks for any help you can give

[libreoffice-users] Calc =MONTH problem

2013-08-19 Thread IGraham
Hello

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, if theres a setting I haven't set or
I've found a bug

Libreoffice Calc
Program settings are OptionsLanguage SettingsLanguages
User interface 'English (uk)'
Date acceptance patterns 'D/M/Y;D/M;D-M'

And the problem is
In a cell (CF3) I have the date 01/09/2013 which is DD/MM/
In another cell I have =MONTH(CF3) this cell is formatted as 'date' 'MMM'
and I expect the cell to show 'Sep' it actually shows 'Jan'
So its showing the day as the month and not the month as the month

Any ideas how to fix

Hello and thanks for looking at the problem

So my understanding and logic was wrong - again I have learnt a smidgen more

Eventually got what I wanted by using =TEXT(CG4,MMM)
I had thought of using an array but It seemed a big way of solving a small
problem - plus I'd never used one before ?? Maybe I should have just for the
'smidgen more'

Again, thanks for the help

Easy: just put that text into the cell! The nature of spreadsheets
is that anything you type into a cell replaces what is already in
it. Your user will overwrite the message with the actual data.

Alternatively, you could insert a note in the relevant cell (Insert |
Note or right-click | Insert Note). The user would need to
understand the note indicator and know how to hover over it to see
your advice - or you could choose Show Note if you want the note to
 be permanently visible.

Incidentally, your example date of 01/01/2012 is uniquely unhelpful,
since it could represent either month-day-year or
day-month-year! You probably need something like 31/12/2012 or
12/31/2012. Mind you, the exact format of entry may not matter, as
the spreadsheet will interpret the input according to the locale and
display it according to the formatting of the cell.

 I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Calc question - paste special

2012-10-09 Thread IGraham
Hello
A Calc question
I have a grid of cells 7x20, one row for each day of the week, cells may
contain no data today
Daily I update the relevant cells
I want to copy and paste this grid to another sheet in the same book
I select grid and copy, go to other sheet right click a cell, select paste
special, click 'paste all' and 'link'
The contents of the cells are pasted as links, but only the cells that have
content, blank cells do not contain the link
Would be nice if all the cells were linked as daily I have to recopy/paste
Am I doing something wrong or is that the way it works

Thanks for any help

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc question - paste special

2012-10-10 Thread IGraham
Hello and thanks for the replys
I have reported this as a bug
Using '=' and 'enter' works to an extent but blank cells appear as '0' and
any cell formatting is lost and the link isn't 'live' - later changers
aren't copied across
I can make this work =if(len(a1)0,,) (for this sheet the copy only
needs to reflect one data type and a 'dot' will do) so using
=if(len(a1)0,.,) works (notice the .), however again all formatting
is lost
Thanks for the help but the best results are achieved by a daily copy and
paste

[libreoffice-users] Conditional formatting

2012-11-07 Thread IGraham
Conditional formatting

I have a grid of cells selected (approx 48 X 120) these cells have
Conditional formatting set on them
Enter a letter in any of the cells (say 'r' for red) and that cell will
formate to red - I have 4 different colours
I can set this up no problem and it works ok
But when I reopen the spreadsheet the formatting towards the bottom of the
grid does not work - just shows the inputted letters
If I look at formatting Conditional formatting manage the 'range' has
changed

Think this is a bug as its only started since upgrading to new version -
I've reported it as a bug
I have deleted my user profile and let it recreate but that didn't fix
looks like I'll have to install the previous version
Unless anyone has any ideas how to fix

[libreoffice-users] Writer: remove/merge pages

2013-01-12 Thread IGraham
Hello

I have a book size .odt document (101858 words) which I found on the web, it
was judging from the formatting originally a .html document. As its an
interesting book I'm slowly going through it to change unwanted formatting.
Eventually I'll convert it to a ebook
Two questions
*The main question*
The document is split in to four pages, how do I remove/merge the pages
They don't seem to be manually inserted as placing cursor in front of first
character of next page and deleting doesn't remove the page
*Secondary question *
Does Libraoffice normally struggle with large documents (crashers), if so
any good practices to avoid the resulting aggravation

2013-01-12 Thread IGraham
Hello

Thanks for the replys
I'm running W764 ultimate with 4gb memory
Libreoffice 3.6.2.2 - slightly old version because the newer version breaks
one of my spreadsheets Conditional formatting, I've reported this as a bug
and its being looked into (I think) I'm hoping version 4 will be ok

Mirosław
I would have thought 4gb memory should be ok, I 'll try closing other
programs, see if that helps
I'm just sorting out for a PC rebuild with 8gb - that must be enough
The profile, I 'll try that. The Universal Panacea, rebuild the profile,
done that with a few programs - even works occasionally :)

Tom
No other programs giving problems and no new hardware or system changers
lately
I've now turned of Java for Libreoffice (was version 1.7.0_09)
And increased memory use to 25 (was 20)
Your last post as to Master document and creating web-pages, I'll have a
look, who knows

In the past I've had documents where I couldn't get rid of the pages, my fix
then was to copy each page content over to a new document thinking 'there's
got to be a better way'. But this time I thought I'll not be lazy, I'll find
put the correct way. Possibly I was right the first time

Thanks for the help and I'll report back on the lack of crashers latter
(fingers crossed)

Hello again

Thanks for the help, the problem seems to be resolved

I did un-tick Java (only one version in the Java list)
Double memory settings
Copy paste to new document
Rename profile - so Libreoffice could 'rebuild' the profile
After about an hour of work it did crash, but hasn't again so is it would
seem now ok - fingers crossed

And to Brian (who emailed me)
The everything in 'four' pages thing and needing a strong magnifying glass
Uu yes, my foolishness, was working in 'web layout' and that view gives
a reduced page count, I should have realised something was up as the pages
showed as panels

Thanks all, help was appreciated

[libreoffice-users] Calk - lookup cell in column

2013-09-13 Thread IGraham
Hi

Now this might take a bit of explaining

I have a spreadsheet that records data for each day of the year
Vertically row by row I have the days of the year
I like my week to start on a Monday
So I have my year/days set to start on the first Monday of the year
So the actual first day of the year position/row is dynamic either on the
Monday or above
This all works ok

However I then (for manipulating data by month) need to know the row/cell in
which the first day of the year (or month) appears
How do I look up/find within a column the cell in which the first day of the
month is - I assume that if I know how to do it for say January then I can
do it for any month.
I'm totally clueless as to how to do this

/Hopping that my explanation isn't to bamboozling/

Any ideas - please

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc - sort in to columns

2014-02-20 Thread IGraham
Hello and thanks to Alan Brian (who replied private)

Yes my choice of words to describe the problem wasn't great, 'sort' was the
first thing I tried so was probably the first to swim up from the murk.

The mock sheet shows a problem from a larger sheet saved as a .xls, stored
within Dropbox and accessed and added to by other people - all of whom have
limited spreadsheet knowledge. Anything I add to the sheet has to add
minimum chance of giving a user the possibility of screwing things up.
Which was why I was keen to present the member type emails in separate
columns to just be used.

So the first thing I tried was 'Auto filter', that worked but the user still
had to select the relevant from up to 60 rows (not a big problem I suppose).
However if a user sorted the sheet and subsequently saved the sheet then the
next user would be presented with a sheet they hadn't seen before, do a bit
of a panic and possibly try to add data in the wrong place. I understand
filters, they 'might' but best not to wear rose tinted glasses.

I also tried 'If' statements. Consternation (include a 'index column +
member type = unique) and VLOOKUP. Neither of which gave good result.

I was trying to set something up that wouldn't mean extra and ongoing work
for me, but maybe just maintaining a simple text file is a way to go.
Possibly this whole 'member details' sheet would now be better served by a
database. But I'm not great at database stuff and I don't know what my users
would make of it.

If you have any other solutions/thoughts I'd be grateful (theres shed loads
of spreadsheet stuff (I know) I don't know)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc - sort in to columns

2014-02-21 Thread IGraham
Hi

Nice try Paul
I've never used pivit tables so didn't know they could produce that, which
as you say may be a sufficient workaround, I could use it and it gives the
closest result to what I want I've tried. But really the more I think about
it the more I know a simple text file will be the easiest to maintain and
for the users to use.
I'm still toying with the database idea, but in truth that would be more to
satisfy my own urge to relearn and tinker.

Thanks for looking at it

[libreoffice-users] calc column headers

2011-10-16 Thread IGraham
LibreOffice 3.4.3 , W7 64x, Calc
Calc the column headers - A B C etc are acting strange, sometimes their not
there, sometimes some of them are there, if they are there they overlay Row
one, and they randomly appear/disappear as sheets are clicked on or changed.
I'm assuming this is a bug but ? well i don't know
i can live with it ok, but would be nice to get rid of this behavior
any ideas

[libreoffice-users] Re: calc column headers

2011-10-16 Thread IGraham
Thanks for the response - and to Brian who emailed me

After a bit more investigation I'm (fingers crossed) convinced its to do
with a corrupted spreadsheet rather than a failure within Libreoffice. The
broken up column header was only happening with one spreadsheet, the
spreadsheet was saved as xls, stored in dropbox and shared with MS Office
users, I'm presuming that the constant opening and saving between the two
office programs eventually managed to corrupt it and Libreoffice was
struggling to handle it.
Have recreated the spreadsheet and its working ok - gave me a chance to bit
of needed tweaking and tidying it up.

But, if this does reappear then your possible solution will be put to task

[libreoffice-users] Base - Phone book ?

2012-02-14 Thread IGraham
Base
its been quite a few years since I've perplexed myself with a database, but
needs must

i want to print my Thunderbird address book, (the phone numbers mainly) i
can do this from within Thunderbird but i cant choose the fields or set up
the display so the output is hardly user friendly
using Base i can connect to the Thunderbird MAB file choose the fields and
out put a print, but again not particularly user friendly output
What i want is someone to point me towards a tutorial/resource that will
show me how to do the design bit or/and give me advice or even a template.

All help gratefully revived

2012-02-14 Thread IGraham
far be it for me to distract from a good developing 'discussion' ;)

thanks for the input people

the calc option, as much as i like a good spreadsheet i don't really think
its going to produce a booklet type phone number book without a good deal of
tweaking and as has been pointed out calk wont connect directly to the
thunderbird database
thanks for the suggestion though

base, I've already connected to the database and got a output of the fields
i want, what i want now is to know how to go into design view and build an
output that would look and print off something like a purchased phone book

Tom, havent had a chance to have a proper look at the links yet - thanks

and if anyone does have a suitable template

[libreoffice-users] Formula Bar size

2012-04-09 Thread IGraham
Hello

Calc
My eyes aren't quite as good as they once were so in Toolsoptionsview
I've increased 'scaling' to 130% - I can now see my formulas with out
trouble
However the Formula Bar itself hasn't increased heigh to accommodate the
scaled content and the bottom of the content drops under the bottom of the
formula bar
I can increase the height of the formula bar by dragging the bar to double
depth.
But I'd rather increase the height of the single depth bar by just enough
points ? to show the contained text - can this be done ?

[libreoffice-users] Conditional Formatting columns

2012-04-09 Thread IGraham
Hi
Conditional Formatting columns
Sheet name DH April
I have a area/grid of 8 columns E10 to L40, in cell W7 I have a number (1 to
8)
I want to starting from the first column (E10) conditionally colour a number
of the columns depending upon the number in W7
This is the Conditional Formatting formula I'm using
COLUMN()-COLUMN($'DH April'.$E$10)=$'DH April'.$W$7
Its not doing as I expected, its colouring the columns/area not from the
first column but from the first column plus whatever the number is
Any ideas on how to get this working

[libreoffice-users] Calc - Auto fill stepped cell reference

2014-07-26 Thread IGraham
Hello and good morning

Calc
Is it possible to auto fill a stepped cell reference ? I've been trying
without result
What i want is in a cell (or two ) a cell reference, to highlight that cell
and drag down
So the first few cells might be
A1
A8
A16

highlighting and dropping would produce
A1
A8
A16
A24
A32
A40
etc
I've got a few columns needing the same stepped cell reference and this
could save me some time

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc - Auto fill stepped cell reference

Hello again

thanks for the effort Mark

Brian, my causticness was 'tongue in cheek' - mostly

your solution, i managed to get something working, not quite as
self-contained as your example but close
I set up a column 8 16 24 32 etc then used =INDIRECT(ACD9) - cd9 being
the cell reference of '8' the first value in the column, that copies down
nicely and the 8 16 24 32 etc is reusable

thanks for pointing me in the right direction

[libreoffice-users] Calc, =left not working as expected

2014-08-31 Thread IGraham
Hello

Could someone tell me whats going on in the spreadsheet i uploaded

This is a small part (to demonstrate) of a couple of legacy (by year)
spreadsheets

Column C contains a 7 cell drop down list with a range to select. these
rangers did originally contain a graphic face (seemed like a good idea at
the time) but that corrupted during subsequent Libreoffice updates. Now most
of the faces or just dots
The spreadsheet i use now just contains a range of just numbers - works ok.

But i need to get some of the info from these old sheets into a combination
sheet

Altering the original sheets as little as possible i used =LEFT(cell ref,1)
This seemed to work, except the values returned aren't seen by vlookup and
can not be summed (but can be added) and dont work in a graph

Maybe its something to do with text rather than number values ?

Any suggestions

[libreoffice-users] Base, connect to map/grid ?

2015-05-13 Thread IGraham
Base, can I link a database to a map/grid/spreadsheet grid – not really sure
how to ak this or what is possible, doable or worth attempting so bear with
me.
An explanation of what I want to do.
I like gardening and keep on buying plants and sticking them in around the
garden, most have difficult names and I have a crap memory. At some point
I'll be wandering around the garden see a plant and have no idea what it is.
I'd like to create a map of my garden and record where a plant is and its
name (common and Latin) etc in a database. Possibly such an application
already exists (free) if it does I haven’t found it.

So is it possible to connect a database to a map/grid/whatever to do what I
want

Any thoughts help appreciated

[libreoffice-users] Re: Base, connect to map/grid ?

2015-05-18 Thread IGraham
Hello and thanks for the replies
Should have replied a bit sooner but things kept getting in the way

I already do the name tag in the ground to an extent, but they are
unsightly, go missing and are the bare minimum.
Latin names are useful, not all plants have a common name, common names tend
do be non specific.
I'll also be recording things like date purchased, where from, price, life,
propagation.

I looked at the mysql possible way and was left a bit bamboozled, couldn't
find an example that did what I wanted and didn’t want to go down that path
unless I knew it would do what I want and be double by me – i've failed with
sql before, just a bit beyond me. Thanks for suggesting though.
A database I can do though – to an extent.

Looks like for me the way to do it is draw out the area in a spreadsheet
(calc) and use the cell reference in a separate database. Would have been
nice to have something integrated but such is life.

Thanks for the help

[libreoffice-users] Calc a formula conundrum

2016-11-04 Thread IGraham
Hello
A Calc conundrum
I’m wondering if there is a simpler way of doing this

Cell I5 contains a line of text from a bank statement the content will
include or not a key word,
key words are Lidl, SE Gas, Water etc etc
The formula below (in C5) looks at content in cell I5 if the cell contains
one of the key words then a corresponding name is produced in cell C5 ie.
Lidl = Lidl, Water = Water etc etc.

The formula does work, however it is long and is laborious to add new key
words and I’m hoping someone might know a better way of doing it.
New key words would be ‘HOLLAND & BARRETT’ and ‘PAYPAL’ and more as needed.
I’m wondering if its possible to have a list of key words ?

I’ve attached an example – which will make my explanation more clear ? I
hope

=IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("LIDL",I5)),"LIDL",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("SE
GAS",I5)),"GAS",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("WATER",I5)),"WATER
",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("LEGAL & GENERAL",I5)),"LEGAL & GENERAL
",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("SOUTHERN",I5)),"ELECTRIC",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("TALKTALK",I5)),"TalkTalk",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("MORRISON",I5)),"MORRISON",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("ALDI",I5)),"ALDI",IF(ISNUMBER(FIND("HERON",I5)),"HERO
