Re: [Veritas-bu] Merging Master servers

2006-10-27 Thread ida3248b
Hello Greg

I have done something similar from a windows master to a Solaris under NBU
4.5, what we did was copying the relevant db/images on to new master, put a
FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER entry in bp.conf. As a security measure we frozen
all the tapes written by the old master. In your case I think you should be
able to copy the mediaDB from the Linux media server to Solaris media server.

Try to use the archive search, I'm pretty that a detailed procedure for
merging masters was posted on the this list

[Veritas-bu] Tracking Etrack Incident numbers

2006-10-27 Thread dave_norrie

Hi All,

I raised a call to investigate an exit status 84 error
and we resolved it by using the workaround detailed below. Problem is that its
totally killing the performance of a bpduplicate session, which results in me
being unable to duplicate a full backup over the weekend. Does anyone know of a
way to be informed (other than reading the next MP release notes) when a more
permanent fix is put in place? Im assuming that the workaround is only a
temporary solution. Heres the full Etrack Incident number and details:-

Etrack Incident = ET646985

Description:

NDMP backups failed with a status 84 when
writing a TIR fragment.

The bptm log showed an error where the
expected block position is one off.

This error occurred in the function
write_data_tir().

Workaround:

To avoid this issue, add the following
line to the file

 installdir/netbackup/db/config/ndmp.cfg

NDMP_MOVER_CLIENT_DISABLE

This will have a minimal impact on
backups. However it will cause a

 significant performance
impact to dup/verify/import when using

 NDMP drives.

Cheers,

Dave

Our

Re: [Veritas-bu] Tape not mounting

2006-10-27 Thread Dave Markham
We had a 1 drive L25 and put a second drive into it. Unfortuneatly the
second drive in ended up being the first drive on the chain as the
original drive was put in the wrong slot.

Anyway out of server card it goes to robot which links to drive one and
then onto drive2.

Its not worked since it was put in but robtest does mount it ok.

WEAVER, Simon wrote:
 Hello Dave,
Is the drive SCSI connected correctly? Also terminated at the end of the

Funny, just sorted out an identical problem - start a job runs, attempts to
load in drive 1, downs the drive, mounts in drive 2.

My problem was the SCSI Cable BETWEEN the drives. Absolutely nothing wrong
with it from a visual perspective, but after changing the drive, it worked
 fine.

Also, has this problem been constant, or has it just recently started to
occur? Have you attempted to try ROBTEST by chance? Does your robotic
library give an indication of a drive problem? Rebooting of the Robot
 perhaps?

 Netbackup 4.5mp6 on Soalris 8.

I have 2 LTO drives in my system but a backup just fails to mount a tape in
the first drive and just downs it. I have no idea why and cant see in the
logs. I have log level set to 4 and have been looking in the bptm log but
 dont see anything obvious.

There is nothing in the drive also like a stuck tape.

Where do i look to find if the drive is at fault or not?

Ugh. Looks like you're going to have to do some math to find that out.

I'd assume you'd want to look for ^SCHEDCALENDAR\n to verify that it's
a calendar based schedule.

Then you're going to need to look at the combination of SHEDCALDAYOMONTH
(why no F?) for dates in *any* month (32 being the last day of the
month), and then the combination of SCHEDCALIDATES and SCHEDCALEDATES
('I' for include, 'E' for exclude). I believe, but am not certain,
that excluded dates override either dayomonth and calidates.

And of course dayomonth dates are '1' indexed days from the beginning of
the month, while cal[ei]dates are unix time or seconds from the epoch
to the beginning of the given date, in local time. (If you change the
timezone on the master server, does it rewrite the database, or does it
just change the output of 'bpplsched -l', I wonder?)

I'd recommend perl or python with some date manipulation routines

I might create an array with a cell for each of the next (say) 30 days.
Add a bit or a hash entry for each schedule that appears to schedule
that date. Then run through the cells and see if two schedules refer to
the same date.

Good luck!

Re: [Veritas-bu] Linux Media Server + Win2K3 Master

2006-10-27 Thread Brooks, Jason
I've discovered the contributing factor to this, but can't find out why.

With the added test Linux Media Server, if I set the storage unit to be
used by only that Media Server, it won't mount a tape, reporting that
the Tape Media server is not active. If it's set to any available,
the job will run, but not by the Linux media server. So far, any job
ran to use the Linux storage unit are sourcing from the master server.
Additionally, what I'm trying to back up is a NDMP device, and if I try
to create a NDMP storage unit, the Linux media server isn't even
available.

So, it seems that I'm missing something. Suggestions while I go off and
dig through the Nix Admin Guide?

[Veritas-bu] Memory usage under rhel 2.1

2006-10-27 Thread Edson Noboru Yamada
Hi,I have a media server (NBU 5.1 MP4) running under RHEL 2.1 AS.The server is a SUN V40Z with 8GB RAM. There are 6 LTO2 tape drives attached to it.Under normal circunstances, each job is recorded on two tapes simultaneously (on and off-site copy).
My question is regarding the memory usage, which looks too low.NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS=64, SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS=524288, and the MPX of eachof the 6 drives is 32.So, according to the manual, the total shared memory allocate should be:
NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS x SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS x MPX x Number of drives = 6 GB.However, using linux top command, we see a plenty of free memory (5 or 6GB),no matter how many jobs are running.btpm complains also that it´s waiting for empty buffers.
Am I doing something wrong?TIA

2006-10-27 Thread Darren Dunham
 BPPLSCHED COLUMNS

 Line 2
 SCHEDWIN
 SUNDAY START_TIME in seconds
...

Well that's the format of the line, but it's not guaranteed to be on
line 2. You'll have to parse the line identifier rather than counting.
Calendar scheduling will move it around.

Line 3 Residence for each copy
Line 4 Pool for each copy
Line 5 Retention Level for each copy
Line 6 Fail_on_Error for each copy

Likewise those may be moved down. As far as I know, they'll always be
adjacent and sequential, but I prefer to just parse the line identifer
directly anyway.

[Veritas-bu] Disk trashing and memory leak - HPUX master server...

2006-10-27 Thread Hampus Lind

Hi all,

I created a case with HP about disk performance on my
master server. I got the answer that my server is trashing and perhaps have
memory leak problems.

These are some numbers from my disks (sar d).
I have tried to increase scsi queue depth, but nothing helps. HP said that it
must be an extremely intense oracle database on this disk, but its not, is my
netbackup disk.

device %busy avque r+w/s blks/s avwait avserv

c16t0d1 97.70 312.67 1573 19467
232.55 4.52

c16t0d1 100.00 649.81 834 6651
681.50 9.99

c16t0d1 100.00 854.77 1112 8896
751.81 6.03

HP also pointed out that I have some processes that might
have memory leak problems Those processes is bpsched.. I got this back
from HP: (from top)

CPU
TTY PID USERNAME PRI NI
SIZE RES STATE TIME
%WCPU %CPU COMMAND

0 ? 21867
root 192 20 17280K 5040K
run 0:01
17.98 3.98 bpsched

1?
21867
root 213 20 20928K 8692K
run
0:06 58.86 23.16 bpsched

1 ? 21867
root 148 20 21312K 9076K
sleep 0:07
51.48 27.16 bpsched

This process seems to
have a memory leak since the size field keeps increasing and the cpu usage is
high

Does anyone else have these numbers against disk
on the master server? My master dont have these values all the
time, but from now and then it peaks at these numbers and sometimes higher
Do bpsched have a memory leak or is just how it
 works?

Our environment:

HPUX 11.11

NBU 5.1 MP5

Thanks and regards,

Hampus Lind

Re: [Veritas-bu] jnbSA login problem for fresh install

2006-10-27 Thread Yang Xiao
Yeap, I have the xinetd running and the auth.conf looks like this root ADMIN=ALL JBP=ALL* ADMIN=JBP JBP=ENDUSER+BU+ARCI found that I was able to login to the console if I change the hostname to localhost, but then even when I login, I can't even get to the master server properties window, it just times out.
Also, I have applied MP3 as well.Thanks,-Yang
