Dare I ask which is which?

Two were new to me, I subscribe to three of them, but watch only two

Hey All You Big Applites!

Bre and I are coming into the big NYC Tuesday,
December 20, and we were hoping to have a vloggerific
happy hour with anyone who would like to attend! I am
especially excited about this trip, as it will be my
first time meeting many of you in actual (not virtual)
real- life! We will be flying into JFK Airport on American flight 268
around 4:18 and will plane to arrive at Cellar Bar by 7:00 on the subway.

We would love to see all of you NYC peeps, so if you can't make
it that night and would still like to hang out, call
Bre's cell--we will be in town until January 1.

Cellar is at 325 E 14th

I find it odd that you've misinterpretted what I said. I never said
they'd be on my list of six.

It amuses me even more that you've reinterpretted the context
of "interesting vlogs", in that I was referring to what the vlog
viewing majority consider interesting, and not myself specifically.

As to "how interesting" I personally find The 05 Project and Josh
Leo, depends on whether you mean a) generically interesting, or b)
interesting from a vlog theoretics point of view, two of many
criteria I use when considering which vlogs to watch. My opinion on
which I probably wouldn't want to give in a public forum.

Of course the title of the article was "The best of the rest", so in
actual fact it is probably proposing that Steve Garfield is THE most
interesting vlog. Think through that one.

Reading between your lines, it sounds like we actually agree.

Who would be on your list of "six must-see" video blogs?

Regards,
 Richard

more that you call those "interesting vlogs".

2005-12-14 Thread Richard Bennett-Forrest

I find this particularly amusing. "must-see" for who?

I tend to only watch vlogs which deal with the medium, so theoretics,
challenging the norm, taking a risk, interesting uses of "citizen
media". I don't watch home videos or news stories, and unfortunately I
don't have the time to watch many political vlogs, because the time it
takes to sort through and throw out the U.S. centric ones isn't worth
it.

Of the six "must-see" vlogs in that list, four are new to me (and I
keep pretty up to date with what's new), and there's only one which I
currently subscribe to, or (having watched them all) would want to
subscribe to.

Although my list of six would have five different ones than his, even
for the majority of vlog watchers, even those not interested in
theoretical stuff, you'd think some of the more interesting ones like
Human Dog, The 05 Project or Josh Leo would appear in the list.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous (or amusing) thing.

Regards,
 Richard

the Republican Congress is trying to write a bill that will end
essentially end public ascess TV nationwide.
The key is to not just fight for continuing access to cable TV since
these corporations are making billions laying cables on public
property.
(The US gave away public airwaves to NBC, CBS, ABC for free).

We need to fight for community bandwidth and server space.
Videoblogging could be the next public access, decentralized.

as it right now, TV shows are aired on local cable TV and forgotten.
With public, ourmedia-like serversa community could document and
archive events which can then be watched at any time, and remixed in
later years.

Re: [videoblogging] BIG stupid tags Question

2005-12-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Here's some documentation:

You can tag your blog posts on creation by adding rel="tag" links to
the body of the post.
For example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/chihuahua"; rel="tag">chihuahua

is a link that denotes the content is tagged "chihuahua"
The href can point to anywhere as long as the URL ends in the word you
wish to use as a tag. You could point it at Delicious, Flickr,
Technorati, Wikipedia (as in the example above), wherever... this type
of tag is read by Technorati and by any web crawler or spider that
indexes tags.

the efficiency of being able to post school projects

[videoblogging] Re: Best Mac Screencasting App?

2005-12-14 Thread LeanBackVids.com
So what's the best setting to use when compressing the video out of
Snapz Pro X?

I'm screencasting stuff and it offers compression settings for the
video file after I'm done. I've tried a few different settings, but
all end up with a .mov file. Then when I import this file into FCP,
it works fine but takes forever for me to render within FCP for
editing. Basically, it is slowing me down a lot. In the past, I've
gotten AVI files from a PC and those work just fine in FCP.

Any insight on the settings would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: [videoblogging] community TV and videoblogs

2005-12-14 Thread David Meade
Yup. TV content is starting to publish RSS, and TVs are starting to
consume RSS ... thats why I like the idea of RB on TiVo so much

Once people start using TVs (and set-top boxes) as aggregators for
content created by the little man out there on the web ... well, I
think that's freakin' huge.

TVs are becoming aggregators for content we're making. That's awesome
if you ask me.

And I'm not being all 'oooh I wanna be on TV' ... I dont care about
that beyond the fact that it opens up a huge audience to the messages
that the vlogsphere as a whole chooses to produce and publish.

With TV using the same tools we're using - now in both directions ...
it speaks to the power of the distribution channel we have and have
had at our disposal.

[videoblogging] Video Blogging in WSJ

2005-12-14 Thread Beth Agnew
I was interviewed today about video blogging by a reporter from the Wall
Street Journal. The story should run "as early as Friday" she said. I
wasn't able to glean the focus of the article from our conversation. We
were all over the map talking about why one vlogs and how to do it. I
think it's safe to say that some very interesting characters in the
financial world will now start taking notice of vlogging. Brace yourselves.

Working at a community TV station in manhattan, I was excited to see
that a station in Mass has created a video feed of some of their

this is important because it shows that the info is getting out there.
and the info is this: we can all create and post our own media.
RSS feeds and aggregators are the way we keep in touch.
there are no gatekeepers anymore.

now we got to work on actually connecting and communicating.

PODCASTING, VLOGGING, & THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Sunday, January 22, 11 a.m.
Digital Forum - Shorts Theater
Sundance Film Center, Main Street Mall

The combustible mix of audio blogs and mp3 players known as
³podcasting² has
been termed by some as ³the first great media breakthrough of the 21st
century.² Combining the democratic ideals of inexpensive digital
production,
virtual community, content-on-demand, and freedom of expression;
podcasting
has emerged as an overnight success promising an endlessly varied
universe
of audio content to anyone who wants it at any time. But behind these
ideals, podcasting also opens up a new market with unlimited
possibilities
with respect to audience penetration, frequency, consumer
advertising, and
target marketing. Is this a win-win situation for media companies and
content developers alike, and where might it take us? Moderated by Jason
Calacanis, internet entrepreneur and CEO of Weblogs, Inc.

[videoblogging] Re: 3974 subscribers? not quite

2005-12-14 Thread petertheman
OK, it is as I thought: the data is being cached.

I just talked to the Feedburner guys. The stats are just a little out
of date because of caching. We've been sending the correct amount
since yesterday, and by tomorrow everything should be showing the
correct amount.

The Feedburner live stats go back 24-26 hours (interesting to know!),
so today in about an hour or two those should show the correct amount
(we've been sending the correct stats since yesterday).

The other stats (chicklet, API used by vlogmap, ...) are cached a bit
longer, so they will show up correctly tomorrow.

Sorry 'bout all this :) Let me know if any more questions or concerns!

Cheers,
Peter

[videoblogging] Re: Why I chose M4V temporarily

2005-12-14 Thread Steve Watkins
Have you found any examples of h264 decoders that dont work with m4v's
renamed to mp4?

Certainly I would agree that m4v files should not be renamed to .mov,
because they arent .movs , mov is a different container format to mp4.

But I had assumed they were totally standard mp4 container files
though, so renaming them to .mp4 would be a totally legitimate thing
to do.

Am I wrong? All of this file extension stuff only relates to the
container format, what type of codec the actual video & audio streams
use does not change the legitimate filename choices. I had assumed
that purchased .m4v content from the apple store was also still using
a mp4 container type, just with additional info in that container
about DRM stuff. Until I see evidence otherwise, I will continue with
this assumption. For example VLC can read the protected .m4v file, it
just cant handle the DRM part, and gives an error. But it still
mamanged to look inside the container, so I assumed the ocntainer was
still standard .mp4 type.

I will investigate what Eric Rice was saying about encoding speed etc
seeming different ith .m4v export compared to h264 output, I expect
them to be identical.

Cheers

Again, simply 'B' for blade, 'A' for pointer.

A quick google flagged this:

http://www.editorsguild.com/newsletter/JulAug02/tip_fcp.html

which seems to cover most bases, although it's a bit old.

Shift-Z is probably my favourite :)

I click on the tracks, and then press apple "L" -- this delinks the
video and audio tracks.

Free tip -- you may alredy do this, but what the heck. Apple "B" gets
you the blade for cutting, and then Apple "A" brings the pointer
back, so you can move things around. I think this saves a lot of

As mentioned, the 3ivx/.mov combo has been working well for me. I can

Re: [videoblogging] RSS Subscriptions + Email

2005-12-14 Thread Michael Sullivan

Ok, maybe gmail's web clips isnt for everyone... i actually am not using them... i pretty much focus everything out that is not an email message sent to me ;-)  My point, however, is to open a discussion on RSS subscriptions delivered to your email address.
I think this makes a lot of sense for many users. The key is to know the audience make-up... and undoubtedly their are many who really would prefer not to download, install, configure and learn to use an RSS Reader application or even another web based aggregator.  These people may not feel that the primary benefit of such applications, which is feed management/download scheduling, is enough to make them add and use another piece of software.  This is because we have many 'lite' users who may only be subscribed to fewer than 10 or 20 RSS channels.
We already know that most everyone frequently uses email... its where most attention seems to be across many user types.  If fresh new posts are emailed to you and also provide ways to manage your subscriptions, then this seems like a big fat obvious service that many will appreciate.
