We've used Disc-Go-Pod machines with much success fro many years. We
have burned out a couple over time but they've been used routinely and
have saved many high use discs.

We found that using a disc cleaning service was a better option for the small
volume of DVDs needing serious cleaning.

Re: [Videolib] Recommendations on DVD scratch/repair machine, or system

2013-03-14 Thread Michael Vollmar-Grone
For me, three aspects of the VMI Buffing machine move it to the "if I
can only have one unit" category:
1. Very easy and fast to use. If a patron had problems playing a disc,
we can buff it for him in literally one minute. And that takes care of
at least 90 percent of the reported problems. The RTI takes longer to
run and requires mixing chemicals and emptying buckets,
2. Can train anyone to use the machine in about 5 minutes. Not so with
the RTI, and
2. Does not remove layers of the disc. Each RTI resurfacing shortens the
life expectancy of the disc.

As I said, the RTI products are great. I've used them for 22 years.
We've only had the VMI for a year so I can't speak to longevity.
Our DiscChek is about 7 years old. Our first TapeChek, with minor
repairs, lasted about 15 years.

Glad we can have both, more than paid for themselves in the first year
of operation.

Best wishes,
Mike

Thanks for the response. Looks like the RTI machines have more chatter so far. We just received a
flyer to purchase a VMI Hybrid machine for a "mere" $1,600.00. Though it is probably a
good investment, that sounded a bit steep. But, then one does get what one pays for usually. So,
I want to optimize our purchase with the best machine for the least money. But, I don't want to go
"cheap." In the past we have use the standard manual disc scratch remover things for
about $30 bucks or so. Mixed results with that. Not really satisfactory.

Mike, you recommend the VMI over the RTI machine. Does it really do a better
job? Is it more reliable? I assume it might at least be more durable. Thanks
for the info.

Thanks, Susan. Seems to me that an inexpensive system like the JFJ Easy Pro is
at least a good place to start. Certainly we can always upgrade. I have been
reading some good reviews about this system. Seems to be a win-win for the
price. If anyone else out there has any recommendations, I'll take them.

Thanks.

Jared,

Given that you're interested in cheap but not TOO cheap, I'll pipe up to say
that I recently purchased a JFJ EasyPro Plus unit to take care of our DVD
cleaning/minor disc repair needs. Which is to say, on an as-needed basis, not
on a "we routinely clean everything" basis. I've only had it for a couple of
months, but so far, it's been good. Cost is about $125.

We've used RTI products for decades; first the TapeChek for videotapes,
currently the EcoSmart for discs.
They do a great job!

But we added a VMI Disc Buffer last year. Fantastic results without removing a
layer of the disc.
Quick and easy 30-60 second process, depending on degree of scratching.
The number of complaints concerning discs not playing has dropped dramatically.

However we still need use the RTI for about 10 percent of reported problems.

If I could have only one machine, it would be the VMI.

Best wishes,
Mike

I have to reiterate what has already been said. We have an RTI- Junior in
our biggest branch library and it has been running strong since 2001. We
purchased a used (by Recorded Books reps) Senior model for our Main library
and have had great success. RTI is a great company to work with they
believe in service to their customers. We still have an RTI-VHS tape
cleaner/inspector that works like a champ!

I agree entirely with Melissa---our RTI disc cleaning & repair machine has
been effective, easy to use and a real workhorse. It's been well worth the
investment.

We've used the basic ECO-SMART for years now with great success and never a
hiccup. RTI recommended this model (over the more expensive models they
could have promoted but didn't) for our less-than-daily use---mainly because
it won't clog up if it sits between use. For us, their sales & support
people (Scott Jahnke in our case) were key to identifying the model that
best matched our needs.

We are a public library that uses the ECO-SENIOR from RTI. We purchased it
approx. 6 years ago for $2800. I know they have newer/other models, but you
have to call for pricing (I think).

I love it. The discs look new and they can be repaired a handful of times
(depending on the disc and damage). I had to send it for repair once which
cost $300. It is simple to use and the supplies are also reasonable. FYI, I
use it every week or two though it is made to be used on a daily basis.

[Videolib] Recommendations on DVD scratch/repair machine or system

2013-03-13 Thread Seay, Jared Alexander
Library Friends,

I need some recommendations on good (moderately priced) DVD scratch repair
machines/systems. Or can anyone point me to a site that does good objective
reviews of such? I can only find company sites (no objectivity there). What
are you folks using?

Please feel free to respond kindly to me off list. Thanks.

Jared

PS: Has anyone ever created a general (or specific) FAQ site/blog/webthing
based on questions asked on this list? A massive undertaking to be sure. But,
how helpful it would be.

VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues
relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control,
preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and
related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective
working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication
between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and
distributors.
