Re: Bin files. Re: System 7.5.5 [was: my stash of Macs]

2001-07-27 Thread Mike Evans

I never managed to install Open Transport on my LC (via the copy in System
7.5.3 Installer or via an OT Installer (1.1.1 and 1.1.2) on its own). Maybe
an earlier version than OT1.1 will work on LC's, but I had no luck with
version 1.1.1 or 1.1.2.
Actually, to clarify, it was worse than that, in that the LC had a processor
upgrade card (Sonnet Allegro 030 33MHz), which the OT Installers couldn't
'see'. The Installer just said you need an 030 processor or higher to run
this software or something like that.
Kind of presumed when I bought the card that it wld allow me into a
wonderful new world of speed and stability, using stuff like OT, but,
oh well, now I know different. I'm never quite sure if the card is working
at all, actually. 'Clockometer' shows it as running at 33MHz, so I guess it
must be... but it still seems that my IIci (030 25 MHz) might be faster
(although it does have an FPU... that must help).
I searched the Internet q a lot but never found any info on how to make the
OT Installer recognize the 030... Anyone had any experience with these
cards?

And, um, doesn't Open Transport require at least an
030 CPU? Or have I forgotten something? Haven't
ever actually used a Mac II or LC and the only 68000
based Mac I've used was a Classic with a bad HD.
Everything else has sported an 030 and newer.

68020 is minumum for OT.

Good. It will work on that guy's LC then. :)

Absolutely i'd love to have the 7.5.5 update on floppy disks know where I
  can get em?

Navigating through Apple's new and improved support/software section
of their website is a real hair-puller, but you'd eventually wind up here:
http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html
The System 7.5.5 Update is a three-disk download.

Stuff like this is still within easy reach at ftp.apple.com. You
really don't need that new and improved page for older software.
BTW, considering we are talking about a LC I would not install
anything newer than 7.1 and preferably even something older (the FAQ
will tell you what would be the best). LC's are slow and crippled
68020's.

Now on to my next small probem, the three disk update floppies are
.sea.bin files which when I download through my PC get mangled as many
people have told me before... anyone willing to convert them to .HQX files
for me so I can bring them down to floppies using my PC then transfer them
to my mac via the PeeSea? my mac does not yet have any access to the
network because macTCP does not seem to be able to use shaw@home's DHCP...

You DON'T NEED 7.5.x to run Open Transport. Go to
http://devworld.apple.com/sdk and download then
install Drag Manager, Thread Manager and SFM 68k.
Then get Open Transport 1.1.1 AND 1.1.2 from Apple's
FTP site. Install 1.1.1 then immediately after
rebooting, install 1.1.2. You'll also want to replace
the 7.1 Finder with Finder 7.1.3 that comes with
Drag Manager, even though the included instructions
say it doesn't.

Its also a good idea to trash any extentions and
control panels, or at least disable them, that don't
work with the LC. Control panels are easy, just
doubleclick on each one and dump the ones that say
they won't work on this Macintosh. For extentions
you'll need a guide or someone who knows them well.
Anything that says PowerBook can go straight to the
trashcan. (Unless you have a PowerBook. ;-)

Tried dropping them onto Stuffit Expander or running
