I’m guessing if you’re doing that to save your battery, you’d be better off
turning your screen brightness down to zero.

Screen curtain by itself does nothing to save battery power.

  Hi,
with iOS 11, if screen curtain and auto brightness is enabled. Brightness
goes to 0%. With that said, you will conserve battery power.

Re: How do you use the Lyft app

2018-01-21 Thread Kathy Brandt
Thing After entering your pick up point, you have to double tap on the confirm
button to confirm that you want to be picked up. After that, you add your
destination. There is a provision for adding an additional stop, which will be
your final destination unless you choose to swap stops. After adding your final
destination, you double tap the button to request Lyft. If you double tap on
the menu in the upper left-hand corner, that shows you options such as your
ride history, payment method, etc. If you cancel your configuration, you have
to start all over again.

Re: Optimising use of SIRI

2018-01-21 Thread Kelly Pierce
I use Siri a lot when going to the gym for calculations. The coach
creates a workout for the powerlifting team. last week we were told to
lift at 70 percent of our one rep max. I just asked Siri to tell me
what 70 percent was of my one rep squat number and it replied within
seconds. I did the same for the bench and deadlift workouts. It is
much easier than using a calculator. Recently, I have been using it to
identify music. If I am listening to the radio or I am at a bar and I
really like a song, I ask siri to name the song. After it names the
song, I open up Shazam and I have the song info e-mailed to me. I
eventually download the song from the Internet and make it into a
ringtone. I have been doing it recently with some heavy metal music.
Talk to you later.

Re: Does having screen curtain on save battery power?

2018-01-21 Thread Kelly Pierce
It is correct. this is because on LCD screens, the same amount of
energy is used to project black on the screen as white or other
colors. The display elements are not turned off but just turned to
black. On OLED screens such as with the iPhone X, a black screen
turnes off the diodes.

How to Read United States Public Library eBook Titles via the iOS OverDrive App

2018-01-21 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Well, Rebecca, a list member, and I had a nice phone conversation regarding
the Overdrive app today. During the conversation, I provided instructions
on how to search for, and download audio books.

I told her that one cannot read ePub formatted eBook titles in Overdrive,
via VoiceOver. This continues to be the case.

However, a short time after our conversation, she contacted me stating that
she had successfully borrowed and downloaded a Kindle formatted eBook via
Overdrive. I was absolutely surprised and delighted for it never occurred
to me to attempt to borrow a Kindle formatted title.

I then contacted her to discuss the steps necessary to accomplish this. She
provided the broad strokes of the method stating that she wanted to explore
the feature more thoroughly before posting to the list.

I have just confirmed her findings and am delighted to say that Kindle
formatted eBooks work beautifully with VoiceOver, as one would expect since
the titles are displayed from within the iOS Kindle app, itself.

Below my signature, you will find the steps on how to borrow and return
Kindle formatted eBooks via Overdrive. You may use either the web or the
iOS/Android app to actually obtain the titles.

Please note that the steps listed below assume that you know how to use
Overdrive in order to search for, and borrow titles. It also assumes that
you have an Amazon.com account and that you are familiar with the Kindle
and/or the Kindle app media system.

Remember, the purpose of OverDrive is to make available, for free, all of
the books owned by the US Public Library system.

Even though the steps below may seem complicated, they are not. In fact, I
just downloaded two Kindle formatted eBooks in less than 2 minutes after
borrowing them from the library.

Remember, unlike Overdrive audio books, with the eBooks, you will borrow
them via OverDrive and read them on Kindle.

Using my Focus 40 Blue Braille display with my iOS Kindle app, I can confirm
that OverDrive titles are equally as accessible as their commercial
counterparts.

A very special thanks to Rebecca Ilniski for bringing this feature to my
attention.

Mark

How to borrow and deliver Kindle Books

1.
Open your library's digital collection (you can find it using
www.overdrive.com).

2.
Find a Kindle Book to borrow. You can: .Tap or mouse over a title, then
select more to go to the title's details page. The details page lists the
formats available for that title, including Kindle Book (if available).
List of available formats on a title's details page. See instructions above.
Note: Some Kindle Books from your library (including many picture books,
read-alongs, and graphic novels) are not supported on certain Kindle devices
or reading apps. To check if an eBook has Kindle device or app restrictions,
look for a Device restrictions link under "Available formats."
.Run a search or open a collection, then select Kindle Book under the
"Format" filter.
.Use the advanced search and choose Kindle Book in the "All formats"
drop-down menu.

3.
Once you find an available Kindle Book, select Borrow.
If prompted, sign in.
4.
Find the eBook you've borrowed on your Checkouts page (under your Account).
>From there, select Read now with Kindle.

You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete checkout and send the eBook
to your Kindle device or reading app. If you're already signed into Amazon,
continue to step 5. If you're not signed into Amazon, skip to step 6.

5.
If you're signed into Amazon, choose a device or reading app from the
"Deliver to:" drop-down menu, then select Get library book. The book will be
sent to your Kindle device or reading app.
Get library book button and Deliver to drop-down menu on Amazon's website.
See instructions above.
Note: You must complete this step for the book you borrowed to appear in the
"Your Content and Devices" list in your Amazon account. If the book does not
appear in this list, you won't be able to download it on any device.

6.
If you're not already signed into Amazon, select Get library book. You'll be
prompted to sign in.

After you sign in, choose the device or reading app where you'd like to send
the book you borrowed, then select Continue. The book will be sent to your
Kindle device or reading app.
Amazon's Kindle Book delivery page

Does having screen curtain on save battery power?

2018-01-21 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

I know this has been discuss way back when. To my recollection I remember it
being said that having the screen curtain turned on does not save battery
power. Can anyone share any information on this as to whether this is
correct or not.

Mr. Ed

Well I finally got Dad's iPhone back to working. Ran the DFU update again

say, I hate this phone! I know your supposed to run one finger up the edge
to go home but it only works part of the time fore me. Even dad who is
sighted misses the home button. He says there are too many gestures.

Hello,

Is the orientation lock no longer available on IOS 11? I recently had to reset

setting for locking the orientation mode to portrait. I do not like my phone
switching from portrait to landscape and back whenever I adjust the phone’s

available or am I not looking in the right place?

How do you use the Lyft app

2018-01-21 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi All,

I setup the Lyft app and was looking around on it. I put in my home address.
Then I choose a place to go. Then I click on cancel configuration. Then it
took me to another page and it shows the minutes I can be picked up. Now on
the screen that I am on all VO says is Menu button, invite friend to Lyft,
ride mode Lyft button, Pickup then my address, and confirm pickup ETA five
minutes. This is all that is on this page. How do you get out of this page?
Also when you are in the Menu how do you get or go back on this page?

Any help on this Lyft app would be appreciated.

Mr. Ed

Apple Watch, texting auto response not sending

When replying to a text on Apple Watch 3 with a auto response it doesn’t send
if I flick through the suggestions. If I select from the first couple
suggestions the message sends. If I flick say through 6 or 7, the message acts
like it sent, but checking the message app on my phone shows the message didn’t
send. I’ve had this problem since watch 1, but just decided to see if you good

I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is
simply not needed in my area.

I asked my question because I have a tendency to lock myself out often. That

Now, I wonder how hard is it to install these locks. Do I need to hire a
specialist to assemble and install these kinds of locks, or I would be able to
do it myself? When it comes to the regular mechanical locks with keys, I
always change them myself without hiring a Locksmith. I am not sure how hard it

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.

I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

Hi all,
Since receiving my iphone 7, all my notifications are messed up, including
Dice World.

So I was wondering if i were to delete the app and re-install it, would
that

restore my notifications?.

Secondly if I did that. would I have to start from scratch. as I'm at

RE: Optimising use of SIRI

2018-01-21 Thread Richard Turner
Marie,
You hit the nail on the head.
When Siri gives you a list of web results and you double tap on one.
There is a return to Siri button in the upper left, double tapping that brings
you back to the Siri search results so you could pick a different result.

Thanks for reminding me of this.

I’m not sure if this happens all the time, but I have seen a “return to Siri”
in the upper left corner of the screen. I haven’t tried it in this
circumstance. Perhaps others know?

Hi,
I do not have a solution for the web search issues with Siri. It does not read
those kind of results, you do have to use VoiceOver and I have no idea how to
get back to the list of links other than trying the same command with Siri
again. Not ideal.

AS for using Siri to compose Email, I don't use it unless the Email is one
fairly short sentence. Siri stops listening if you pause for a half a second...
Now, I have been known to use dictation in the body of an Email. Once in the
body of a reply or new Email, do the two-finger double tap and you'll hear a
ding, then you can dictate for up to about 30 seconds before Siri will begin
converting your speech to text. If you are done before that time, do another
two-finger double tap to let it know you are done.
That way, pausing isn't an issue.

HTH,
Richard

Here is some suggested uses and instructions for Siri commands:

How to Use Siri

To use Hey Siri, open settings, arrow down to Siri & Search, enable Listen for
"Hey Siri" and follow directions on the screen. After Siri learns the sound of
your voice, to activate Siri without touching the phone, just say, "Hey Siri"
and give your command or question. (The phone does not have to be plugged in
if it is a 6S or newer to use Hey Siri.)

To use Siri when touching the home button, open settings, arrow down to Siri
and Search, enable Press Home for Siri. Then hold down the home button to
activate Siri. Continue holding the home button until you finish saying your
command or question. Let go of the home button and Siri will respond.

Things you can do with Siri

If you want to use VoiceOver, ask Siri to turn on or turn off VoiceOver.

Ask Siri to call someone in your contacts: "Siri, call Sam Jones." If you have
more than one phone number, Siri will ask which number you want to use.

Ask Siri to call a business: "Siri, call Rite Aid Pharmacy."

Ask Siri to play your voice mail.

Ask Siri to make a call on speaker phone.

Ask Siri to send a text message. Say, "Siri, send a text message to John."
Then Siri will ask, "What do you want to say?" Answer, "call me at 6:00 pm."
Then Siri will read back the text and ask are you ready to send it? Say "Yes."

Ask Siri to read text messages. You can ask to have my last text message read
or read my unread text messages or read my text message from Sally.

Ask Siri to send an Email to someone. Say, "Siri, send an email to Sue Jones."
Siri will ask, "What do you want to say?" Dictate your message being careful
not to pause until you have finished the entire message. Then Siri will read
back the text and ask are you ready to send it? Say "Yes" or "No."

Ask Siri to read Emails. Siri can read the unread emails, last email, or from
a particular sender.

Ask Siri to create a calendar appointment. Say, "Schedule an appointment
titled Dr. Smith for January 6 at 2:00 pm." Siri will read back the appointment
info and will ask if you want to schedule it; if you say, "yes," the
appointment will appear on your calendar. If you say "No," Siri will give you
options to cancel or change parts of the appointment.

Ask Siri what appointments you have scheduled for a particular day or week.

Ask Siri to create a note. The first line of a note

What is the real function of the date field in the contacts on the Iphone?

2018-01-21 Thread Jan
Hi all

I was wondering about the "date" field in the contacts on my iphone 6 with
the latest version of ios. The birthday field works very well, and if I
enter info in that field it reflects on the calendar and I am reminded of
the particular birthday. With the date field however I have no luck in
having it reflected on the calendar. I wanted to use that field for
anniversary reminders, so I change the label to anniversary, but no matter
what I do, this field will not show up in the calendar. Is the date field
only there for informational purposes then, or am I missing something here?

Any help appreciated.

ICloud Drive questions

2018-01-21 Thread Vicki W.
Good Morning,

I have set up ICloud drive on my computer and now it seems when opening it, I
need to set up an account before accessing things. That's no problem, but I'm
wondering how I choose which things from my Mini IPad and IPhone will show up
on ICloud drive on the computer.

I have ICloud drive turned on on both of my devices. Do I need to do more
things on my computer or my devices to access things?

Thanks.

Vicki

Hello Rebecca,

While you ask two very simple questions, the answers are a little more
complicated. This is because the explore-by-touch method works best when using

Rather than attempting to write a lengthy post with what may appear to be a
somewhat ambiguous explanation, I invite you to contact me, off-list, with your
phone number and the best times to contact you and we can go through the
process, together.

As I have stated on several occasions, I am a huge fan of OverDrive, using it
every single day to download and read audiobooks, via VoiceOver. Because of
some video display bleed-through, however, the interface can be confusing to a
new user of the app, via VoiceOver.

Another option is to have a sighted friend explore the app with you as you use
it with VoiceOver.
