Re: What 3words, The app that can save your life

2019-08-15 Thread Mike B.
Hi Robin,

I installed it and it seems to be accessible to some degree, but there are
buttons that are not described and I'm not sure what they do. Also when
choosing your language English United States is there twice and it's not
clear which one you're supposed to select. This is not the only language
that has double choices. No, I haven't used it, per say, I'll try it if I
get lost between my man-cave and the bedroom! LOL LOL

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go dodgers!
I believe that everything happens for a reason. Usually, the reason is that
somebody screwed up.

What3words: The app that can save your life

three-word address

Police have urged everyone to download a smartphone app they say has already
saved several lives. What is it and how does it work?

Kicked. Converged. Soccer.

These three randomly chosen words saved Jess Tinsley and her friends after
they got lost in a forest on a dark, wet night.

They had planned a five-mile circular stroll through the 4,900 acre (2,000
hectare) woodland Hamsterley Forest, in County Durham, on Sunday evening,
but after three hours they were hopelessly lost.

"We were in a field and had no idea where we were," the 24-year-old care
worker from Newton Aycliffe said.

"It was absolutely horrendous. I was joking about it and trying to laugh
because I knew if I didn't laugh I would cry."

Jess Tinsley dialled 999 after getting lost - and was told to download an
app to her smartphone

At 22:30 BST they found a spot with phone signal and dialled 999.

"One of the first things the call-handler told us to do was download the
what3words app," Ms Tinsley said.

"I had never heard of it."

Within a minute of its download, the police said they knew where the group
was and the soaked and freezing walkers were swiftly found by the Teesdale
and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team.

"I have told everyone I know to download this app," Ms Tinsley said.

"You never know when you are going to get lost and need it."

What3words essentially points to a very specific location.

Its developers divided the world into 57 trillion squares, each measuring 3m
by 3m (10ft by 10ft) and each having a unique, randomly assigned three-word
address.

For example, the door of 10 Downing Street is slurs.this.shark, while the
area across the road where the press congregate is stage.pushy.nuns.

It was born out of company founder Chris Sheldrick's postal-related problems
growing up in rural Hertfordshire.

"Our postcode did not point to our house," he said.

"We got used to getting post meant for other people, or having to stand in
the road to flag down delivery drivers."

Ten years in the music industry, which involved trying to get bands to meet
at specific entrances to their venues, also fuelled his frustration.

"I tried to get people to use longitude and latitude but that never caught
on," Mr Sheldrick said.

"It got me thinking, how can you compress 16 digits into something much more
user friendly?

"I was speaking to a mathematician and we found there were enough
combinations of three words for every location in the world."

In fact, 40,000 words was enough.

The company started in 2013 and now employs more than 100 people at its base
in Royal Oak, west London.

Mongolia has adopted what3words for its postal service, while Lonely
Planet's guide for the country gives three word addresses for its points of
interest.

Mercedes Benz has also included its system in its cars and what3words is now
being used in 35 languages.

But still, not enough people know about it according to Lee Wilkes, a crew
manager for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, one of 35 English and Welsh
emergency services to have signed up to the system.

RE: ira going free

2019-08-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I assume maybe they received funding from somewhere because after all Aira
agents are paid ant volunteers like Be My Eyes. Air agents also have more
control through the app, they can take pictures for you and will even look up
stuff online and send you information through the app, they can help with
filling out inaccessible web forms and so on. Of course this would probably not
work within the 5 minute free call time frame.

Hi,
I think "Be My Eyes" (which is totally free ; is giving AIRA enough of a
challenge that AIRA had to try to cut into "Be My Eyes" usage.
I have used both services and I hope there is room for both of them in the
future.

All,

First, this is NOT a scam. Yesterday afternoon at around 2PM PDT Aira did
make the announcement you saw.

Second, if you wish to cancel your plan, even the $29 intro plan, of course
you can use the Aira for free 5-ninute service. Many calls actually are
under five minutes which is why this new option was instituted. I would
say, however, that most all of us do find times our needs go beyond five
minutes. I would urge not canceling for those times.

Re: ira going free

2019-08-15 Thread Tim Mehok
Hi,
I think "Be My Eyes" (which is totally free ; is giving AIRA enough
of a challenge that AIRA had to try to cut into "Be My Eyes" usage.
I have used both services and I hope there is room for both of them in
the future.
Gracious,

What 3words, The app that can save your life

Howdy y'all,

I came across this and thought it was worth sharing. This app is in the App
Store.

What3words: The app that can save your life

What3words divides the world into 57 trillion squares, each with a unique
three-word address

Chris SheldrickImage copyright What3words

Chris Sheldrick founded what3words in 2013

Planet's guide for the country gives three word addresses for its points of
interest.

Mongolia has adopted what3words for its postal system

Mercedes Benz has also included its system in its cars and what3words is now
being used in 35 languages.

But still, not enough people know about it according to Lee Wilkes, a crew
manager for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, one of 35 English and Welsh
emergency services to have signed up to the system.

"It cuts out all ambiguity about where we need to be," he said.

Tackling fires in large rural expanses, for example on moors, will be helped
by the system, Mr Wilkes said.

"Instead of saying 'meet at the gate and then get directed from there,' we
can be absolutely specific about where our crew needs to get to," Mr Wilkes
said.

"It will make for a much more effective service. We are quite excited about
it.

"It would be flippant of me to say this will become commonplace but I really
do think it could be.

"I just cannot see a downside."

People who find themselves needing help in remote areas can use the app to
direct emergency services to them, police say

If people do not have the app, the emergency services can send a text
message containing a web link to their phones.

But that requires a signal (85% of the country is said to have a

Re: Calls not in my contacts going to voicemail

2019-08-15 Thread Richard Turner
If you go to settings, Phone, there should be a heading titled something like
silencing calls.
Then below the option it says:Calls from unknown numbers will be silenced, sent
to voicemail, and displayed on the Recents list.

Incoming calls will continue to ring from people in your contacts, recent
outgoing calls, and Siri Suggestions.

RE: ira going free

2019-08-15 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
In an ideal world, it would be available in as many countries as possible, but
one can only imagine the additional overhead Aira would incur by trying to
staff up with enough multi-lingual or exclusively Spanish speaking agents. That
and honestly, how many blind/VI iOS folks are there in Mexico or Latin America
in general that can afford to use this service? Probably not enough at this
moment to make it a viable option for Aira to offer.

I work in the interpreting field. I don’t personally deal with or offer
telephonic interpretation through my company mainly because it is such a hassle
and can get prohibitively expensive. As an example, for Spanish speaking
telephonic interpretation, agents can get paid 30 to 50 cents per minute. This
isn’t even considering more specialized fields like medical or legal fields
where a certification may be required. Not to mention issues like what’s
referred to as localization in the industry. I.E. Mexican Spanish isn’t
necessarily the same as Spain or Argentinian Spanish etc. These same issues are
present with English I’m sure for them, but again, you’re probably going to
have a wider pool of English speaking iOS users and agents and a more universal
vocabulary that Aira’s already spent resources on to properly train for.

I’d like to be proven wrong, but I at least for now don’t see how they can make
it work financially in the motherland.

I don’t personally use Aira, so don’t know their terms of service, but have you
considered maybe accessing it via a VPN? Seems like BeMyEyes would be a more
immediate and accessible option in the interim as well.

What a disappointment it’s not available here in Mexico! I’ve Emailed Aira to

AIRA is a great service, and this new option does sound great if you don't need
to make longer calls often.

Aira is free for short calls under 5 minutes to all, was: Ohio-Talk The day we've been waiting for is finally here.

2019-08-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It states very clearly in the message:

The best way to learn is to Use the Aira app and connect with an agent-you can

I think I will cancel my $29/month subscription since most of my calls are
under 5 minutes and in fact I often didn't even use my 30 minutes since I
usually have sighted help around at all times, after all, I pay several
employees to work for me so they might as well earn their keep 🤯

Take care and enjoy Aira, the quality of the help you get is outstanding, this
will essentially solve the issue of captchas on the web, those times when your
screenreader decides to take a hike and you may need a few minutes of help to
see what's going on, Aira agents can direct you to move your phone a bit this
way and a bit that way to take a great picture and then snap the picture for
you so you don't have to risk moving the phone when you tap the button etc.
It's a great service.

Regards,
Sieghard

So if I cancel my subscription... because I hardly use minutes... or if I do
they are short calls... can I still use aira for free?

ira going free

2019-08-15 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Since I got a complaint about the long list of email recipients and since
I’m still not sure if this is a hoax or not, I’m sending the text of the
message I received earlier in my inbox. If it is a hoax I apologize in
advance.

 God bless!

The day we've been waiting for is finally here.

Aira is free everywhere and at any time.

Let that sink in For a moment!

Aira. Is. Free.

Starting today, you can make short calls to Aira agents for free, everyday.

So whenever you are doing those small daily tasks where a little information
can save a lot of time, we've got you covered.

We know, we can't hardly believe it ourselves!

There is no catch. So long as the call is relatively quick (5 minutes), its
free. Just make sure you have the latest version of the app on your phone.

As this is the early version of the service, we ask for some patience if you
come across any hiccups, along the way, or if we end up making some minor
tweaks further down the line. We are so excited to get this out into the
world that we just couldn't wait any longer! The important thing is to
remember that Aira is free now and will always be free.

Want to learn more?

The best way to learn is to Use the Aira app and connect with an agent-you
can aske all of your questions and it won't cost you a thing. If you are not
on a plan, that's great! You can now make short calls for free to Aira
agents every day and everywhere. You're no longer limited to using Aira in
just access locations or with access offers (those are still good to use if
you want to do something that will take more time, like explore a museum.

If you are on a plan

That's great too! You can use your daily free short calls to help make your
plan minutes stretch further. As the first (5 minutes) are free.

Connect with an agent now and start saving time. You have nothing to lose -
literally!

So if I cancel my subscription... because I hardly use minutes... or if I do
they are short calls... can I still use aira for free?

You have nothing to lose -
literally!

You can buy a unlimited option to play as much as you want.

At this point time, do you have a favorite app?

I'm not really interested in games. My google assistant on my phone
allows me to play certain games from my google home. Also, a friend
of mine said that after a certain level of play, blindfold games cost
money.

Keep on truckin’!

Hi to all. I am really having fun with my new phone. I have all

sign into zoom as I used google and it kind of logged in all by
itself. I tried be my eyes and it works ok. I'll have to figure out
why my camera shows up blurry to the be my eyes person, but other then
that I'm doing well. Once I figure out how to put in a meeting ID for
zoom, I'll be in good shape. I don't have an email app yet, but I
might get gmail since that's what I use on my computer. Bard mobile
is a lot of fun, and I have a lot of books downloaded to my phone
ready for reading. Apple accessibility is very helpful as well as a
very good friend of mine. I have google play music, google assistant,
and google home. I have successfully set up my google home and it is
working once again. Google assistant is also a lot of fun. I have an
app with different versions of the Bible in audio format that works
pretty well. I also have seeing AI on my phone as well. Pandora is
on my phone, but that isn't very accessible. I have tunin radio which
I can access with my google assistant. I know I'll learn more from
this point on.
