RE: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
Hello Brandon, As this is a rather high-traffic list, you may not have read my subsequent posts in this thread. My solution to listening to manually created audio books in iOS 8.4 is to use the iOS native podcast app. To my complete delight, I have discovered that I prefer using the podcast app to the iOS 8.3 music app as the podcast app has a much better built-in sleep timer than the one included in the native iOS clock. The setting I have come to love is the one that stops playback at the end of an individual episode. I'm so glad to find another audio drama listener ;) I've submitted a couple bug reports to Apple regarding this. One alternative is to use the Audible app to listen to audiobooks synced via iTunes instead. It's not perfect (it can't sort the titles by "sort title" metedata), but it's a step in the right direction and requires no change on your part. On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 2:52:17 AM UTC-4, M. As I posted in a different thread, my solution to this conundrum is to simply tag the files as I normally would but, under the media type, select Podcast rather than Audiobook. Given that I do not use the native iOS podcast app for listening to actual podcast, choosing instead to use DownCast, the podcast area of my iTunes library is completely empty of any live podcast feeds. Consequently, all I see when I open this area of iTunes is the list of books. After syncing to my iOS device, launching the native podcast app displays all of my manually created audiobooks. Single-finger double-tapping on any of the books results in each title being displayed just as it used to be displayed in iOS 8.3 and earlier. While I have no objection to third-party apps, I really do try to use as many native iOS apps as possible. It took over a year or so but I have finally found a practival use for the native podcast app (smile). Thank you again for your help on this. Juli 2015 08:52:17 UTC+2 M. Taylor: So, for example, I have three episodes from the Beyond Midnight radio series. The three titles are Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room. These are .mp3 files that, after being imported into iTunes, I change their media type to Audio Book. Now because I have them tagged as Beyond Midnight, under the Album field, in the Title field, I can list the actual episode names as listed above. In iOS 8.3 and earlier, after syncing to my iOS device, I would then simply select Audiobooks from within the native music app, and then I would see Beyond Midnight listed as a single book. After single-finger double-tapping on the title, I would then see each episode listed by name. No longer. To my complete dismay, I now discover that in iOS 8.4, the iBooks app does not list the individual episodes by names or chapter titles but simply list them as tracks. This means that when I now select Beyond Midnight, under contents, all I see are track 1, track 2, and track 3. Try as I may, I cannot figure out how to get each episode listed by its episode title or chapter heading. If any of you have discovered a tagging method that will allow for the individual chapter titles to be respected in audiobooks, in the iBooks app, please post. I have exactly the same problem with audio books being handled by the ibooks app on IOS 8.4. As long as Apple won't display track names instead of track numbers (and I fear they won't at all) I see only two approaches to solve this problem: 1) Tag all audio book files as music so that they will be displayed in the music app. Although this seems to solve your problem the drawback is that your music library gets cluttered with audio books and if you don't tag them to be skipped when playing in random mode they will also be selected along with your music files. 2) Change the album name of the audio book files to the names of the specific episode. So in your case the albums would be called Let me See Your Face, Fortieth Birthday, and The Room all having Beyond Midnight set as artist. Problem here is that you get a lot of seperate audio books in the ibooks app (I got a show with 73 episodes...) Currently I see no other solution to this. RE: A Workaround FollowUp To: A Definite Step Backwards for AudioBook Listeners in iOS 8.4 iBooks
Hello Daniel, This was an excellent suggestion; one that I had considered earlier but had not yet tested. However, upon reading your post, I did test your suggestion and am sorry to say that the results were no different from those experienced with .mp3 files. The problem is with the iBooks app, not the files, themselves. The developers must allow iBooks to display individual track titles, when provided. Both the native music and podcast apps respect such metadata. My personal opinion is that the developers probably did not take into account that people like to make their own audiobook volumes consisting of various episode titles. My hope is that, should enough people report the oversight, it will be corrected in iOS 9.
