RE: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
Hi Sherry, Here are my thoughts. It sounds that for the most part you are OK with your iPhone 5 except wired headphones don’t seem to work reliably and the battery has a few issues. As for the battery, have you checked if your iPhone is one of those which qualifies for a free battery replacement? If not, as you said, using an external battery case seems to get you by for now and you could of course find an iPhone repair place and ask how much they would charge to put in a new battery. Here is the link where you can enter your iPhone’s serial number to check if it qualifies for the battery replacement: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/ As for iPhone repair places, just Gogle “iPhone repair” and see what you can find in your city or area. My wife has an iPod Touch 5th Gen which had a faulty/non working home button. It was about 3 months past the 1 year warranty period and I had not purchased Apple Care. I took it to an Apple Store in Vancouver and they told me there was nothing they could do except I could buy a refurbished unit for $150 or I could trade it in and get 10% off on whatever new device I would buy. So I found a place in Vancouver that does cell phone repairs and an hour and 50 Dollars later the home button was replaced and it has been working perfectly since. As for the headset, have you been to an Apple Store and asked if they can take a look, it may just be that some dirt has gotten into the jack. Alternatively, you could use a bluetooth earpiece or hedset or, if you go to a repair place for the battery, ask them to check it out to see what it would cost to replace the defective part. You may find that for what an iPhone 5S 32 Gb costs on a 2-year contract you might be able to get a new battery put into you r 5 and get the headset working again. The reason why I don’t recommend that you upgrade to a 5S right now even if you could find a 64 Gig version is simple. It’s already May and we all know that it is almost certain that in 4 months Apple will release the new 2015 line-up of iPhones. This means that the 5S will most likely go away or, if it doesn’t, it will become the new free phone. Also you will probably see a siginificatn price drop of the iPhone 6 models as the new iPhone 7 or whatever they will call it replaces the 6 and 6 Plus. We should start hearing more rumours as to what is coming soon, but while the 5S is a great phone (I still have mine), keep in mind that it cannot do Apple Pay and going forward I at least would not upgrade to a phone which can’t do that. Of course you may be one of those people who would not want to use Apple Pay for whatever reason, but I do think it is here to stay and will get much more widely adopted in the next year or so. Hopefully it will make its way into Canada by this fall then I’d have another reason to upgrade my 5S to one of the new phones *smile). By the way, if you are comparing the 5S at $99 to the iPhone 6 at $299 then that comparision is not quite fair since the iPhone 6 at $299 is a 64 Gig phone and the 5S at $99 is only 32 Gb. Anyhow, I’d definitely check into having somebody take a look at your iPhone 5 for now, you maybe surprised what they can do and if you decide not to go ahead with a repair then it hasn’t cost you anything except for a bit of time. Hi, unfortunately, the iPhone 6 will not run iOS 7. The six and 6+ his earliest version was eight. As for a 32 GB model, no there's not one. It only has a 16 or 64 gig model. Sorry, I misread the message. I thought it said she wanted to restore the phone back to iOS 7 when she got it. Yes, you can put in iOS 7 encrypted iTunes backup on an iOS 8 phone. Blame my brain, for still being half-asleep when reading that. Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
In the mean time, you might try recalibrating your iPhone 5's battery sensor by completely running down the phone, plugging it in, turning it on and letting it fully charge. You may need to do this a time or two. On 05/02/2015 08:21 AM, Sherrie wrote: I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 7. Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
I would be happy to just upgrade from my 5 to a 5S since the 5S has the thumbprint ID and the component that allows the step counting apps.. But now I am told that the 5S does not come in 64 G any more. If I want to go to the 5S it would have to be a 32G. That is the main reason I was considering the 6 because it does come in 64G. Cost is also a factor as the 32 G 5S is $99 and I could use my Juice pack case. The 64 G 6 is $299 and a healthy chunk for a good case. And the price of the Applecare, too. So my second question was dumb I guess. An old backup of 45 g obviously wouldn’t fit on a 32 G new 5S phone., would it. I could probably get by with 32 G if I left off a hundred or so apps I don’t use often and cut my Bard list way down. RE: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
Sherrie, You've sort of hit the nail on the head as to how manufacturers keep us buying the latest technology. They no longer make the higher memory iDevices in past models available anymore once the new versions come out every September. I understand that a 5S might meet your needs but would urge you to carefully consider whether not to go ahead and take the plunge and upgrade to a higher memory 6. If you want to use features such as Apple Pay and other upcoming developments, at some point the 5S will come up short. Regarding the capacity you really need, go to Settings, General, Usage, and Manage Storage to check where the usage on your 5 actually is. Remember, any BARD books you've got on your 5S will not be restored to your new device so you'll need to make note of the titles and your reading position to get your new device up to speed for BARD Mobile. I feel the same way about using my devices for at least two years or longer which is why I got an iPhone 6 with 128GB the last time I upgraded. Apple has increased the size that apps can be and I've noticed in my Apps Store upgrade list that new releases seem to be getting larger. Since the memory decision is permanent as iPhones don't use SD cards or other external memory, make sure you choose wisely. Good luck. RE: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention, I strongly suspect that even if you go with the new 5S, it will come with iOS 8.x on it. Alan Sherrie, You've sort of hit the nail on the head as to how manufacturers keep us buying the latest technology. Good luck. An old backup of 45 g obviously wouldn't fit on a 32 G new 5S phone., would it. I could probably get by with 32 G if I left off a hundred or so apps I don't use often and cut my Bard list way down. It will bear some more thought since I will be locked into my decision for the next two years. I did this very thing when I got my new iPhone 6 in February. I restored the iTunes encrypted backup of my iPhone 5 without any issues. The 5 was also running a version of ios 8 but even though a restore doesn't allow you to roll back to an older version of iOS, it will restore all your stuff from that older version backup onto a device running a newer iOS version. You'll have all your Apps and settings when you restore an encrypted backup with iTunes and they will just be running on the new device with its version of iOS. I will say that I too, use my wired earpods all the time and my headphone jack on my old iPhone 5 failed on two different phones which had to be replaced. When the second one was replaced under AppleCare in January, I restored my iTunes encrypted backup from my old 5 running iOS 7 to the new replacement 5 running iOS 8 without any problems. It sounds as if the problems you're having with your failed earphones might be a headphone jack issue. If you get an iPhone 6, I'd strongly recommend you get at least 64GB of memory. As Daniel said, the 6 doesn't come in a 32GB model, just 16, 64, and 128GB models. Good luck if you upgrade. Battery Replacement Program, was Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
Unfortunately, recalibrating did not work on my iPhone 5. I had to take advantage of the free battery replacement program, offered by Apple, which, allegedly, has been extended through some time in 2016. For more information about this program, including a way to check your serial number to see if your phone qualifies, go to the following link. https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/ If that link does not work, do a google search for iPhone 5 battery replacement, which should find the link to the Apple support web site which discusses this matter. You may need to do this a time or two. On 05/02/2015 08:21 AM, Sherrie wrote: I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 7. I wanted a 5S but the salesman at Verizon said they do not come in 64 G any more and I don’t think I could get by with 32 G. So it will have to be a 6 I guess. Question 2 If I did go to a 32 G model would I have to set it up from scratch since my iPhone 5 backup has at least 45-50 G of content? Re: Question about restoring IOS 7 backup to IOS 8 phone
For question 1, the answer is yes. When one restores from a back-up, the system will place everything into the new iOS. If any apps are not accessible to the new iOS, they will not work. That said, most apps do not have any problems. Restoring onto a lower memory device will block certain apps from being loaded on the device.
