Re: [Vo]:OFF TOPIC Atlanta PDK airshow and airplane joyrides

2014-05-15 Thread Bob Cook
P-51's are a kick. An 80 year old friend who flies once a week had a ride
in one a couple years ago. He said it was one of the most thrilling things
he ever did.

I almost got my license 3 or 4 years ago. My wife gave me the go ahead for
my birthday. I have always wondered about that. I decided my judgment and
reactions were not up to the requirements for such a new endeavor. I now
work for a bush air service in Alaska during the summers. I get plenty of
action landing with good pilots at the stick in places where there are no
runways and nobody else fishing except the local bears and loons.

Would love to attend if I was in the area...

Did volunteer work at the Planes-of-Fame air museum in Chino, Calif. during
my last year in college... was stripping the paint from a P-38 landing-gear
door when Rick Brickert said,

Mark, you been up in the '51 yet?
  No...
Let's go for a ride!

What a ride it was...
At one point we were doin' 490 knots, and 50 feet off the deck at Lake
Matthews!!

Lounge, huh? Well, they have obviously come up in the world since I
frequented them in the 80s when I worked for Sprint at Century Center.

They made a great burger.

Ambiance?

I do sometimes visit the 2nd iteration of the 57th Fighter Squadron on the
other side of the airport. I'll have to sneak in and pay you a surprise
visit next time I'm there now that someone has shown me how to bypass the
increased security at the airport office complex.

For people in Atlanta:

There will be an airshow and open house this Saturday, featuring kids
getting mustard on their shirts. That's what I go to see. Seen one airshow,
seen 'em all.

Between 9 and 12 in the morning they will offer joyrides in airplanes or
helicopters for $40. I don't know if that is on the web site but that is
what the organizers just told me. (The organizers are downstairs in my
building, eating Tootsie Rolls.)

She was making a commotion, laughing and pounding the floor. I had no idea
who she was. I glared at her and said to pilot at the next table, what a
jerk! He said, uh . . . that's Whitney Houston. Oh.

Ambiance?

The ambience of which I speak is a WWII officer's club. That's what it is.
The bar, anyway.

Now, *that's* ambience! The food is awful, but the ambiance galore.

Well, you just reach through and . . . oh wait, if I tell you that we may
both end up in Guantanamo Bay
