Re: Dialing into ISP problems

2002-08-25 Thread Shay Telfer

G3 Powerbook, OS 9.2.1 . I deleted all my internet details and have
re-entered them (acurately) and now I can't connect to my ISP. Does
anyone know what might be wrong? There is no message that comes up, it
just wont connect. I'm not sure what other information to give, to help
find a solution.

I'd suggest
* Checking that you've got 'wait for dial tone' turned off.
* Making sure that the modem cable is plugged in correctly, and into
the modem port (not the ethernet port, it happens! :)

* Re-entering the internet details again
* Checking with the ISP what dialin number you should be using.
Sometimes they change!

* Checking with the ISP that the account is still active.
* Waiting a while to see if there's an outage at the ISP
* Checking the modem log in the Remote Access Control panel to see if
it reveals anything.

Good luck,
Shay

Re: Data/telecom switch box

 Hi all

I'm trying to get a data/telecom switch box. It runs on the telephone cable
and allows me to connect fax, modem and phone to the same line without the
drop out I get with a simple tewo-way adapter.

Given the way the telephone system works, I think that you are
describing the idea that you'd like to have one line shared over
multiple devices that are potentially talking at the same time.

If this is the case, the answer is that you cannot.

If you are talking instead about switching between devices, this is
generally a case of picking-up the line on the device you want to
switch to and then hanging up on the previous device. Of course you do
need to know that a modem connection cannot be switched like this, since
a continuous tone - called the carrier - needs to be in evidence during
the whole modem conversation.

There are modems that support voice and data at the same time, but only
to another such-equipped device. It's mainly for two gamers who are
connected to each other and want to talk.

Finally, if you have an ADSL connection, then your phone line can
support both a data and a voice or fax connection at the same time - but
an ADSL line filter is needed to plug into the line to plug the
traditional phone device into - you'll still need a splitter:

--ADSL line --+-- ADSL filter --+-- Phone
| |
| +-- Fax
|
+-- ADSL modem -- Computer

Hope this clears up your request.

Just have to work out what the hell is wrong with ATM - next week's

For me the solution was to install the latest version of ATM - from
memory that was 4.6.1, but use versiontracker to check...

2002-08-25 Thread crazy_ebot

Good to hear Gordon :-) ... I've done an archive install on my G4 466 - only
issue was the MS intellimouse control panel which was fixed with a quick
software reinstall.

May be just in my head, but the archive install method feels like it resulted
in a
more responsive finder than my earlier 'upgrade existing' choice.

Oh, the much reported lack of functionality with third party SCSI cards seems
to be true ... I've got no access to my Adaptec SCSI Ricoh CDR combo. No
big deal, it'll get fixed ...

Cheers,

Tobes.

Appleworks Print Blues

2002-08-25 Thread Brad Helden

Hi,

I am using Appleworks International 6.2.3 on international OS9.2.2
and have troubles printing. I have a Sharp AJ-1800 printer which
works well with most my other programmes but Appleworks causes grief.

What happens is that every time I go to print I get a warning dialog
box come up saying I have to set my page orientation first in the
Page Setup before I can print - problem is even if I do that I still
get the same thing happen. Consequently I can't print from the damn
application. Have tried many things and still no luck.

Anybody have the same experience with this or can shed some light?

Cheers,

Brad

This happened to me just recently when I changed my ISP and had to re-enter
all my details. For some reason under the TCP/IP control panel it changed
from connecting via PPP to connecting via ethernet.
Maybe that could help.

The company Roxio that make toast also have just released a new version of
Jam that is used specifically for your purpose it will get rid of a lot of
the hissing noises associated with transfer of Audio from LP.

Check it out at the same website as toasts www.roxio.com

Get ProTools from www.digidesign.com It comes in a free version and will
do the trick. ProTools lets you edit the data to a high degree after
importing (via recording) the Lp tracks.

I would like to record some of my LP records on to CD using my
PowerMacG4 and OSX. I have purchased a iMic and it seems to be installed

OK but I can't find any information as to how to record to the hard disk

so I can then record on to a CD. I have Roxio Toast 5.
I am a recent convert to the Mac after many years doing battle with PCs
so my present Mac skills are limited.
