Video Editing

2007-09-24 Thread Chris Watt
Hi Guys,

I need to do some video editing but have been running into a lot of problems.

I can't use iMovie (06 or 08) because it compresses my screencap
footage so badly that it is illegible.

My problem is that I need to include both footage from a camera and
footage taken from iShowU.

Does anyone know what software I should be using that isn't going to
cost me an absolute fortune (such as Final Cut Pro)?

Cheers guys
Chris

Re: Video Editing

2007-09-24 Thread Jude
There's FInal Cut express, which is around $429 and is only really
slightly dumbed down from the Pro version.

Or there's soemthing like Avid Free DV, which is free but a very
dumbed down version of the other Avid products.

Or there's Adobe Premier .. I think that's round $900 for the Pro
version, but there may be a lesser version as well.

Or there's Sony Vegas, which I don't know much about but does run on the Mac.

Or there are a couple of Java based applications which I would say
are still really in development.

My personal recommendation would be Final Cut Express.

Jude

If you intend to edit in iMovie have your movie footage the same size/
resolution as the iMovie project.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do or what screencap is but I'd
suggest you explore the abilities of
VisualHub for converting video without interfering with it's
resolution and Quicktime Pro for basic
video editing such as cutting, copying, or deleting a section of a
movie.

Both are fairly cheap compared to FC.

New Mac User

2007-09-24 Thread Stephen Chape

Hi folks,

My step-son (who lives in Dubai) has just switched from the dark side
to a new iMac 24 inch.

He bought it while he was in Seattle USA last week.
A couple of hours ago he signed up for a .Mac account.
We just tried to communicate using iChat but for some reason his
iChat will not connect.

It tries to connect for a while but then times out.
He can log into .Mac without any problem and I sent him a test email
which worked fine.

Does anyone know if there is a waiting period for activation of iChat.

Re: Word problem

2007-09-24 Thread John Winters
Peter,

Word will have used your current printer to paginate your document as you
see it on screen. I'm not what technique you used to convert your Word
document into a PDF, but my guess is that the conversion used a virtual
printer with a subtly different page definition, forcing your document to
repaginate during the conversion throwing some invisible items onto a new
page resulting in your troublesome blank pages.

My suggestion is that you go back into the Word document and turn on the
display of invisible characters. Look through the document for trailing
spaces and/or paragraph marks, particularly if these are just before a page
break. If there are a few empty paragraphs before a page break, it will just
look like empty space, but if they get bumped onto the top of a new page,
the page break which follows will throw a blank page into your document.
Delete this blank space and your problem may disappear!

HTH,
John

 Hi,
I have a problem with MS Word (now there's a surprise). I have written a
training manual consisting of one section of 4 pages and the rest of the
text which is 128 pages, giving 132 as the total.
After a bit of editing the page count has increased to 134. I converted the
Word document into a PDF and there are now two blank pages in the PDF file
but they are not visible in the Word document. The PDF is used for printing
so obviously I don't want two blanks in there.

Any clues as to how I can get rid of the two invisible blanks?

 Thanks,

Stephen,

There is no waiting period however I would get him to check the
firewall and his router. Get him to go to http://docs.info.apple.com/
article.html?artnum=93208 an ensure that the router he is using is
configured appropriately.

If you can video chat with other people then yours is correctly
configured.

I have noted with my attempts at ichat that it is getting better and
better at overcoming these problems itself. I frequent the ME a lot
and ichat with my wife a lot.

Or you could try Skype. I tried iChat but gave up due to too many
problems (plus not totally secure regarding a 'user id' like with

Skype just works. And believe me, I would rather use Apple products
but it was too much in the end.

I *would* be interested to know from someone who has extensively used
both which has the better video quality though.

Re: Video Editing

2007-09-24 Thread Martin Hill

Chris,
I'd recommend Quicktime Pro.

Once you pay the US$30 and enter your QT Pro Serial number, some
impressive new capabilities are enabled in Quicktime Player which
include the option of copying and pasting in multiple tracks of audio
and video to appear side-by-side or picture-in-picture with respect
to each other and at any resolution and frame rate you wish without
re-compression if you so desire.

I use it regularly with screen recordings that have been captured at
1024x768 with the Motion-JPEG codec at 5 frames per second alongside
talking head video footage running at 25 fps at 320x240 resolution
using the H.264 codec with text or graphics tracks superimposed on
top or alongside. It is as easy as copying the new track and then
adding (rather than pasting) it on top of the first, then calling
up the properties dialog (command-J), clicking on the appropriate
video track and then the visual settings tab and changing the
coordinates of the selected video track to move and re-size it.

The final movie can end up with multiple tracks running at different
frame rates and using totally different codecs and thus avoid re-
compression and the generational quality losses that would normally
occur.

Couple of things to note... VMware's 3D support on the graphics

On the flip side VMware supports 64bit versions of windows and has
the option to choose whether you want to use one or two of the

One other thing to note they don't seem to like being run

I'll post more info as I get a chance to play with VMware more.

One big thing VMware has over Parallels is pre-made OS images. There
are quite a number of Linux distributions and other operating systems

downloading and running the image. Saves a lot of time :-)

Thanks for all your tips.

FCE still seems to be limited to DV sizes (PAL, NTSC, etc.). Which
means that I get horrible compression problems.

iMovie also seems to have the same compression issues.

I am not sure how to use QT, nothing online really seems to explain it.
Are there any really comprehensive tutorials online?

With 10.4.9, Apple has included a driver for USB webcams. They must
be UVC compatible, such as the Xbox 360 camera (about $50). The
third page of the skype link has more information on which Logitech
cameras are supported under 10.4.9 without a driver.

I did find the note about UVC cameras on the Skype forums.

Interestingly many people are reporting that (for example) some
Logitech models do / don't work depending on what revision the webcam
hardware is even though they're both marked UVC on the box (and
there's no way to tell which version of the hardware it is).

I think I'll give it a punt anyway!

 Cheers, Antony.
